THE TAKE

Cholet Basket hosts the undefeated Crvena Zvezda with hopes of pulling itself into the midst of the race for the Last 16 with a big win before its home fans on Tuesday night. Cholet is currently third at 1-2 in Group F after falling to the very same Crvena Zvezda team last week in Belgrade. Avenging that 82-66 loss this week very well could be critical to Cholet’s chances to advance beyond the group phase especially if the 2-1 Benetton Baskets beats the 0-4 Dynamo Moscow in the other pairing of Group F in Week 4. Even though Cholet will have its loyal supporters to push their players on to the victory, the challenge is indeed a huge one. Crvena Zvezda not only dominated Cholet last week, but the European powerhouse is surely smelling blood and knows that a win away from home will all but seal its pass for the next round. Cholet will once again deploy a three-guard attack, thus, one of the keys will be which backcourt can control the game. In their first meeting, Crvena Zvezda won that battle as starting guard Vuk Radivojevic had a great line of 12 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Equally as important, Radivojevic and fellow starter Filip Videnov held Cholet’s Sammy Mejia, Fabien Causeur and Arvydas Eitutavicius in check. While Causeur scored 14 points last week, Mejia was limited to just 10. On Tuesday, all eyes will be on Mejia to see if he can shake free and light it up more, something which his team will most definitely need. Crvena Zvezda is also tough to match up against for Cholet due to the number of forwards and centers that can each take the floor and have big nights. Last week, starting center Elmedin Kikanovic tallied 12 points and 4 boards while his backup Vladimir Stimac came off the bench to notch 18 points and 7 rebounds. Cholet’s Kevin Seraphin and sub Randal Falker will have to find a way to slow down the visitors’ post attack if Cholet is to have a chance. And the last key matchup to keep an eye on will be between Crvena Zvezda forward Tadija Dragicevic and his counterpart on Cholet, Mickeal Gelabable, who have both shown they can score the ball against the other team. In short, Cholet will need to play tough and focused for 40 minutes to down the juggernaut that is Crvena Zvezda.

Quotes Head Coaches

PETROVIC, ACO
Crvena Zvezda
"A good thing about this situation is that we already played Cholet last week, so the same preparation works for two games at the same time. As teams, we now know each other better and we will try to use their weak spots to our advantage. Cholet is a great team and they play much better at home, where they always feature a packed gym. We always go to games in order to win because in this group, nothing is solved as of now. A fourth win would secure our being in the Last 16, but not the first place. And that's what we want, for sure."

"We know our opponent, all their weak spots and also strong points. Our goal is to finish the regular seaso in the first place, but we are expecting a very different game from the one at home. They play much better in front of their crowd and we already saw their athleticism last week. Despite our last road loss in the Adriatic League, we have a good atmosphere in the team and we travel to France to take the win."
Sammy Mejia - Cholet Basket (photo: cholet-basket.com)Cholet Basket stayed in the fight to reach the Eurocup Last 16 in regular season Group F by downing previously undefeated Crvena Zvezda 79-70 at home on Tuesday. Cholet improved to 2-2 while Zvezda now ties for first place with Benetton Gioco Digitale for first place at 3-1. Cholet faces a pivotal, do-or-die road game against Benetton next week. Zvezda will advance to the Last 16 if it beats Dynamo Moscow and Benetton downs Cholet. Sammy Mejia led the winners with 35 points on 8-of-13 two-pointers and 5-of-6 triples. Kevin Seraphin posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, Arvydas Eitutavicius had 13 points while Antywane Robinson pulled down 10 boards for Cholet. Elmedin Kikanovic led Zvezda with 22 points while Mike Taylor had 10 for the guests, that trailed 63-59 with 7 minutes left. Seraphin, Eitutavicius and Mejia fueled a 9-0 run that allowed Cholet to seal a well-deserved win down the stretch.

Seraphin got Cholet going with a layup and Mejia added free throws for a 4-1 lead. Kikanovic and Boris Bakic combined for 4 quick points but Seraphin scored again and Mejia added a layup to put Cholet back ahead, 8-5. Eitutavicius downed a three-pointer and even when Bakic answered from downtown, Mejia joined the shootout to make it a six-point game, 14-8. Kikanovic took over with a put-back dunk and soon added a layup to keep Zvezda as close as 16-12. Cholet kept running its offense through Seraphin, who scored twice in the paint but a three-pointer by Tadija Dragicevic brought the guests within 20-15 after 10 minutes. Mejia kept pacing Cholet with a layup early in the second quarter and Jamaal Tatum added a mid-range jumper for a 24-15 Cholet lead. Zvezda did not panic, however, as back-to-back baskets by Filip Videnov and Mike Taylor made the hosts call timeout at 24-19. Mickeal Gelabale sank a jumper but Taylor and Nemanja Bjelica combined for all points in a 2-9 run that tied the game at 28-28. Mejia followed a layup with a three-pointer and Randal Falker allowed Cholet to get a 35-30 edge. Kikanovic stayed on fire but Eitutavicius allowed the hosts to stay ahead, 39-35, at halftime.

Kikanovic followed a put-back layup with a dunk to tie it at 39-39 immediately after the break. Cholet found a go-to guy in Mejia, that had 5 points in a 7-0 run that he capped with a triple for a 46-39 lead. Dragicevic stepped with free throws and an unstoppable Kikanovic added another put-back basket to bring Zvezda back to life, 46-43. Antywane Robinson shined with a layup-plus-foul - his first points - and soon added a dunk to keep Cholet out of trouble at 51-43. Mejia scored again off a steal but Radivojevic and Vladimir Stimac kept Zvezda within 55-49. Seraphin scored down low and a jumper by Eitutavicius gave Cholet a 59-49 margin after 30 minutes. Seraphin sank free throws early in the fourth quarter but Videnov answered from downtown for a 61-52 Zvezda deficit. Videnov kept pacing the guests and a three-pointer by Bakic gave Zvezda some hope at 63-59 with 7 minutes left. Seraphin and Eitutavicius shined with back-to-back baskets to make the guests call timeout at 67-59. Mejia capped a 9-0 run with a triple that broke the game open, 72-59. Bjelica and Kikanovic tried to make Zvezda return to the game but it was too little, too late for the guests, as Cholet had cruised to an important win.

Head Coaches

KUNTER, ERMAN
Cholet Basket
"It was very important for us to win this game tonight. The team played very well tonight, my players were playing together and they always found some solutions in offense. We succeeded in stopping their offensive skills and we were serious in defense. We knew that with this team, each mistakes from us was some points for them. Now, we have to win in Treviso to hope to be qualified for the Last 16. We did a mistake at home by losing the game by only one point against Benetton. It will be hard but not impossible."
PETROVIC, ACO
Crvena Zvezda
"We gave our best tonight to try to win this game. We knew the qualities of our opponent and we realised them. The key of the game was Cholet Basket's Samuel Mejia. He scored 35 points tonight and led his team to the win. That is what made the difference tonight. Congratulations to Cholet for the win, it was probably the last chance for them tonight to hope to be qualified for the Last 16. Now I am happy that we lost by less than 16 points."

Players

EITUTAVICIUS, ARVYDAS
Cholet Basket
"We are very happy to have won tonight. It is a good result for the team. Sam played an amazing game, he succeed in everything he tried, I am happy for him. The team knew how to play in defense and how to be aggressive in defense. It was the key of this game. Now we have to win our two last games."
