THE TAKE

DKV Joventut will try to keep its momentum going when it hosts Telekom Bonn on Tuesday in Group D. Joventut has already clinched a berth in the Last 16 and will travel to Russia to face Unics Kazan next week with first place in the group on the line provided it wins or Unics loses this week. Meanwhile Bonn has been mathematically eliminated from reaching the next stage and will play its last two games for protocol only. The hosts come off a 108-92 blowout of Besiktas in which Uros Tripkovic led eight Joventut scorers in double figures with 20 points. The team shot 55.1% from downtown and outrebounded its opponent 41-31. Meanwhile Bonn lost a tough decision against Kazan 62-66 despite another solid effort from Bryce Taylor. When these teams met on opening night, Clay Tucker and Luka Bogdanovic scored 16 points apiece to lead Joventut to a 71-76 win. One common trait in those games was awful three-point shooting for Bonn, In fact, the team ranks last in the Eurocup in three-point shooting at 13.2%. Joventut is fourth in the competition at 46% and has made at least 9 triples in each game this season. Bonn has totaled 9 threes. The visitors will need the threes to start falling to open up their offense and have a shot at stealing a win in Badalona. Those stuck with the job are playmaker Jared Jordan, Taylor and small forward Ronald Dupree, who must also match up with Joventut’s deep roster starting with scoring guards Tripkovic and Tucker and point guards Mario Fernandez and Kristaps Valters, the latter of whom leads the competition with 7.5 assists per game. In the paint, Joventut leans on Alain Koffi, Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, Antonio Bueno and Henk Noreal among others on a very deep roster. Chris Ensminger, Tim Ohlbrecht and Patrick Flomo counter for the visitors. The statistics, roster depth and momentum all point in Joventut’s favor, but Bonn will aim to turn the tables on the home side and to finish the regular season with pride.

Quotes Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"This game we will use to try to get some players back to the team dynamics. We hope we can use it to improve some aspects of our game. We are already in the Last 16, but this game is nonetheless important to us, we will work to improve as a team and to beat Telekom Bonn. I think that they are doing a good Eurocup despite the final results. They have been a hard team to beat in their court and they only lost in overtime when they visited Turkey. I am sure that they will try to end the competition in the best possible note and they will come here to play hard."
KOCH, MICHAEL
Telekom Bonn
"In the first game against Joventut we performed very well but unfortunately we had to play without four key players. Now the situation is similar. Chris Ensminger, John Bowler and Vincent Yarbrough will not be at the bench in Badalona so it will be a difficult task to win in Spain. My team has no chance to reach the next round but it deserves a victory because the performance in all games was better than the results show. Of course in Badalona we are the underdog but my players will do everything possible to win their first game in the competition."

Players

DUPREE, RONALD
Telekom Bonn
"It is a pity that we did not make it to the next round. We had some bad luck with injuries and close games and now it is of course a question of honour to win at least one game. The next chance to do that is in Badalona. It will be very tough but I am confident that our team can do it. We have play our best basketball. Unfortunately the break between our last game on Sunday against Ulm in the bundesliga and the game in Badalona is only two days."
DKV Joventut got a last-minute 66-64 win over Telekom Baskets Bonn in Badalona, Spain, on Tuesday to stay in the race for the top spot in Group D. DKV has 4-1 record and trails only 5-0 Unics Kazan with the two teams meeting next week with first place on the line. Kristaps Valters scored as three pointer to win the game at the buzzer after Bryce Taylor gave a 1-point-lead to the guests from the foul line. Clay Tucker scored 13 points for the winners, Luka Bogdanovic added 12 with 6 boards and Pere Tomas had 11. Taylor led all scorers with 19 points and Ronald Dupree added 14 in defeat.

Antonio Bueno capped a 10-2 start for Badalona. Patrick Flomo scored to get Bonn within 10-6 before a three-point-play completed by Henk Norel gave a 14-6 margin to the hosts. Taylor put Telekom Bonn within 16-13 as the first quarter ended after two scoreless minutes. Bogdanovic, Dupree and Alex King exchanged layups to get to 21-17. Later Tomas scored back-to-back three pointers for a 27-20 margin for the hosts. Bogdanovic answered Johannes Strasser for the biggest margin so far, 32-23. Taylor fixed the score at 32-26 at halftime with a rocket from eight meters.

Taylor again from long distance cut the margin to 32-31. Norel’s slam boosted DKV to 36-31 and Tim Olbrecht scored a layup to get to 36-35. Dupree tied the game at 39-39 after stealing the ball and slamming it, and Flomo gave the first lead of the game to Telekom Bonn, 39-41, after grabbing an offensive board and scoring an easy lay up. The game remained balanced as Bueno scored a layup close to the buzzer for a 45-43 cushion for the hosts at the end of the third quarter. King tied the game at 45-45, then Tucker with a mid-range jumper gave a 52-49 margin to Badalona. Strasser tied the game from downtown and proceeded to scored 5 points in a row to put again Bonn ahead 54-56. Tucker made it 59-56 for the home team, which entered the last minute of the game still ahead 63-62. Coming off a timeout, Taylor scored twice from the foul line and Bonn took a 63-64 lead, but a three-pointer hoisted by Valters sailed in to hand DKV Joventut the victory.

Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"The goal was to win the game and at the same time, improving some game concepts like defense. We wanted to recover some players like Eyenga so he can play more and better to get an optimal level. Telekom Bonn is playing great in the German League and they can use a lot of American players, which gives them an edge when it's time to play in Europe. I think we improved our defensive level tonight and in fron of us we had a team tat did things well, that's why we didn't manage to win until the very end."
KOCH, MICHAEL
Telekom Bonn
"I am happy in spite of the loss. We played well against Joventut, which is a great team. We tried everything. We had our chances, but they are a big team. We played good defense on Bogdanovic and Tucker, but Valters killed us with his last three. We knew this game would be hard on us because we were already out of the Eurocup, but I am proud of my players. They gave it all until the end. We came here missing three important players, but I think we did fine."

Players

BUENO, ANTONIO
DKV Joventut
"The game was tough from the beginning, w played slower than usual and we weren't accurate in offense, that's why it took us so long to get our rhythm. Telekom Bonn plyed physical defense and made us suffer. Now we will travel to Kazan knowing that Unics will be first no matter what. We know it's a long, hard trip but it's a game we want to play. The end of the game was difficult and we were lucky to hit that monster three which made us win the game. I think we deserved to win the game, we worked hard."
TAYLOR, BRYCE
Telekom Bonn
"We played well taking into account that we were missing Bowler and Ensminger, our two big men. But I think we fought until the end. We lost but I am rather happy, not because of my game, but because we played as a team and we offered a good image. I try to help the team, I like to add in offense but also rebounds and defense. I like doing everything but we weren't lucky in the end tonight."
