THE TAKE

A share of first place in Group A will be on the line Wednesday when Olympiacos Piraeus hosts Cibona Zagreb. The two teams enter Week 8 in a three-way team with Unicaja for the group lead with 5-2 records, but only one cam remain on top. The Reds have already secured a Top 16 berth as well and Cibona would join them with a win, or a loss by fifth place Air Avellino, which visits Unicaja on Thursday. Cibona bested Olympiacos 85-76 when they met last month in Croatia as Earl Calloway netted 17 and Rawle Marshall added 15. Marshall is coming off his best game yet after scoring 21 points with just a single miss in an 89-70 win over Le Mans. However head coach Velimir Perasovic’s men have not been quite the same on the road as they are at home and have not won outside of the Drazen Petrovic Basketball Center since Week 2. And Cibona has not won in Piraeus since 2004. Meanwhile Olympiacos is perfect at home this far, although head coach Panagiotis Giannakis’s charges are coming off a tough loss at Unicaja. Olympiacos boasts a deep and well-balanced squad that will look to wear down Cibona over the course of 40 minutes. The teams match up well in the backcourts, where Lynn Greer, Yotam Halperin, Milos Teodosic and Theo Papaloukas lead the charge against Davor Kus, Calloway and Branimir Longin. Small forward Josh Childress, who is the only player that Giannakis has started in every game, will be called upon to stop Marshall, while the Reds feature Nikola Vujcic, Ioannis Bourousis, Zoran Erceg, Giorgios Printezis and even Sofoklis Schortsanitis in the froncourt. Cibona counters with Jared Homan, Niksa Prkacin, Luksa Andric and Vedran Vukusic. Olympiacos’s superior size is one reason that it leads the league in rebounding with 36.4 rebounds per game – more than 7 boards per game more than Cibona. The visitors will need to be at their best on the glass to minimize that statistic. The two teams’ respective form at home and on the road makes Olympiacos the clear favorite, the big stakes of this game and Cibona’s ability to rise to the occasion this season could alter that in what could become a 40-minute thriller. And even if the hosts have a comfortable lead near the end, Cibona’s 9-point advantage from the first game could play a role down the stretch.

GAME QUOTES

Olympiacos
  • The last three Euroleague champions - Maccabi, CSKA and Panathinaikos - have lost in Malaga the same season as they won the title. Olympiacos lost there last week.
  • Guard Yotam Halperin needs just 2 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Nikola Vujcic needs 5 more points to reach the 2,000-point plateau. Only four players have accomplished that feat to date – Marcus Brown, Luis Scola, J.R. Holden and Jaka Lakovic.
  • Vujcic grew up near Split, Croatia, where he watched current Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic shine on the great Jugoplastika Split dynasty that won three straight Euroleague titles between 1989 and 1991.
  • Vujcic has played alongside Cibona center Niksa Prkacin many times in their careers. The two grew up together at KK Split and won the 1997 Croatian Cup together. They were also teammates on the Croatian national team at the 1999, 2001 and 2005 European championships.
Cibona
  • Forward Vedran Vukusic has established himself as a dangerous three-point shooter over the past few games. Vukusic started the season going 1 for 8 from behind the arc in his first four games, but has shot 4 for 8 in his last two.
  • Three current Cibona have previous experience in the Greek League and have been opponents of Olympiacos. Davor Kus played for AEK Athens in the 2004-05 season, where he was a teammate of current Olympiacos swingman Michalis Pelekanos. Jared Homan played under current Olympiacos head coach Panagiotis Giannakis at Marousi in the 2005-06 season and Nikola Prkacin suited up for Panathinaikos last year.
  • Center Nikola Prkacin recorded his last Euroleague double double against Olympiacos in December 2004. Prkacin had 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting plus 12 rebounds for Efes Pilsen in a 59-110 rout of the Reds.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We have to handle the upcoming game properly and accomplish one more victory. This time we will be more ready to face the difficulties that came up in Zagreb. After seven games in the competition, our playing behavior as a team is more stable, while none of us believes that we have the obligation to cover the 9-point deficit of the first match. We just want to play good basketball and try to improve our game against a very good and dangerous team in order to get this win."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We have many things to improve before our game with Olympiacos. They are probably the best team in our Euroleague group, but they are still not certain for winning the first place so they will be really motivated for the game. In Zagreb they did not look as strong as we expected, but they keep rising their level and getting stronger. They have many options in offense and it is really hard to defend them. That does not mean we are going to Athens to surrender. We will try our best to surprise them on their home court."

Players

TEODOSIC, MILOS
Olympiacos
"This game will be totally different in comparison to the one we played in Zagreb, but it doesn't mean it will be easy for us. Cibona Zagreb is a good team and they know what they want in the court. They play excellent defense and they always have a plan on offense. If we perform with the same consistency like in our recent games, then we will not have a problem to get what we want from this game."
Nikola Vujcic - OlympiacosOlympiacos put on a basketball clinic on Wednesday as it crushed Cibona Zagreb 93-64 at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. The Reds took over the game by starting the second period with a 13-0 run and they never let up. Olympiacos outrebounded Cibona 35-23 and dished 25 assists to the visitors’ 6 as they improved to 6-2, holding on to at least a share of the Group A lead. Olympiacos will take sole possession of first place if Unicaja loses its game on Thursday against Avellino. Meanwhile Cibona, which entered the game tied with the Reds for first, drops to 5-3. Center Nikola Vujcic was the star of the show with an impressive performance that included 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocked shots. Moreover, Vujcic entered the history books late in the second period when he scored his 2,000th career Euroleague points, joining a shortlist of legends. Yotam Halperin and Ioannis Bourousis led Olympiacos with 13 points apiece, Josh Childress added 12 and Zoran Erceg scored 11. Earl Calloway paced Cibona with 18 and Marin Rozic had 11 in defeat.

Marin Rozic - CibonaBoth teams tried to use their inside game early, but it was Lynn Greer that opened the scoring when he sank a three. Rozic bagged 6 fast points to give Cibona a 7-9 lead, but Giorgos Printezis responded with basket-plus-foul to restore the hosts’ lead. Olympiacos head coach Panagiotis Giannakis switched his defense from man-to-man to zone, which didn’t affect the visitors, who scored three consecutive times – including a pair of threes by Calloway – for a 15-17 lead. Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic made the same defensive change, but Olympiacos didn’t have a quick adjustment to the new conditions and Cibona remained ahead 20-22 at the close of the first quarter.

Since the visitors finished the first period with only 2 for 10 two-point shots, but 5 for 6 triples, Olympiacos tried to improve its defense on the perimeter and to not allow Cibona to score as they did before. Meanwhile the Reds found a lot of alternatives in offense and led by Theo Papaloukas, used all their weapons from inside and outside to score 13 unanswered points. With five minutes to go till the end of the second period Calloway buried a triple to make it 33-25, but the Reds didn’t allow them to return to the game. Vujcic and Bourousis contributed for a spectacular high-low play before Rozic nailed another three. Olympiacos kept scoring both in transition and in the set offense using the pick-and-roll. Papaloukas opened another amazing fast break with a baseball pass, while Vuicic gave his team a 15-point gap, 43-28, with a historical basket as he reached the 2,000-point plateau. By halftime, Olympiacos had boosted the margin to 50-31.

Theo Papaloukas - OlympiacosOlympiacos outscored Cibona 30-9 in the second period and commenced the third period with the same rhythm. Despite the third personal foul committed by Sofoklis Schortsanitis, the Reds continued their up-tempo game and led by Papaloukas soared up to 62-38. Jared Homan committed his fourth personal foul and Cibona turned again its defense to zone, but the hosts were unstoppable and thanks to 2 three-pointers made by Erceg, they stretched the lead to 74-42. At the end of the third quarter Olympiacos was 28 points ahead, 77-49 and the crowd was enjoying a basketball show.

Vujcic scored back-to-back baskets to make it 81-54 before going to the bench. The visitors were unable to follow the tempo of Olympiacos, whose coach found the opportunity to try different schemes, something that didn’t affect the effectiveness of his team. Robert Troha scored from the arc to cut the margin a bit to 84-59, but it was Childress’s turn to score easy points and bring the margin up to 90-58. Erceg scored another three pointer and pushed the lead to 33 points as the fans applauded a spectacular effort as time expired.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"It was a really good game and we all enjoyed it. We stayed focused, didn’t make turnovers and for 30 minutes we were able to read their weaknesses and take advantage of them, scoring in transition. We also played effective defense and this win came easier than expected. I know that all the players are important and we can trust them. Our priorities are to be patient, avoid mistakes and have speed both in defense and offense, but at the same time we need to control the game when it comes to a difficult situation and play smart."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We played really bad in the second period and that cost us a lot. I have to say that the only team that showed up on court was Olympiacos. We didn’t come to the stadium, while our opponents played strong and smart, deserving to win. I hope that it will not happen again and we will return to the level we are used to playing immediately."

Players

HALPERIN, YOTAM
Olympiacos
"We can play much better, because the team has a lot of talent and quality. Our target is to be perfect on April and now it’s December. The next game in Tel Aviv will be special for the whole team and especially, for Nikola [Vujcic] and myself."
PAPALOUKAS, THEODOROS
Olympiacos
"We played well, but a single game cannot be used as a safe criteria. Sure, the team has improved its game, but we are not allowed to celebrate, because we played great basketball for 30 minutes. We are on the right path, not because we pay attention to what is done well, but because we emphasize what has to be better in the future’’
