THE TAKE

A pair of teams jockeying for position in tough Group D will clash in Athens on Thursday when Panionios On Telecoms hosts Efes Pilsen. The two teams are among three entering the week tied for third place at 3-4 and only win behind the teams in second place and one ahead of the team in last. Panionios is coming off a beating suffered in Moscow, 93-61, at the hands of the champs. But head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic’s men lost big to CSKA earlier this season as well and turned around to stun Efes 69-79 in Istanbul. Lonny Baxter and Ioannis Kalampokis scored season highs of 18 and 17 points, respectively, to lead Panionios to that win. Efes struggled after that game and went on to lose four in a row before ending the slide last week by topping Armani Jeans Milano. Milos Vujanic scored 20 and Kaya Peker posted 19 points and 9 rebounds to lead head coach Ergin Ataman’s squad. Efes has a different look since its last meeting with Panionios, having added guard Cliff Hammonds and big men Predrag Drobnjak and Bora Hun Pacun, while Panionios has inked Demos Dikoudis. The teams play similar styles with an emphasis on defense. And their depth allows for many different lineups for different looks throughout the game. Playmaker Aaron Miles is the man that fuels the Panionios attack, while swingman Branko Cvetkovic and big men Baxter and Dikoudis provide the team with excellent offensive options and Kalampokis’s all-around game steadies the team on both ends of the court. Reserves Vasilios Xanthopoulos, Ivan Zoroski, Marislav Raicevic, Levon Kendall and Ioannis Georgalis all average double figures in minutes as Trifunovic can use any of the 12 players that dress without hesitation. Vujanic and Charles Smith lead the Efes attack with Bootsy Thornton and Preston Shumpert rounding out an outstanding perimeter, while Peker and Michailis Kakiouzis team with Kerem Gonlum to form the muscle inside. Hammonds has taken on a bigger role recently and could be the man Ataman turns to in an attempt to stop Miles in the fourth quarter. When they last met, Efes outrebounded Panionios 39-27 – including 15 on the offensive end – but shot 5 for 23 from downtown and 10 for 17 from the line. If the visitors control the glass like that again, they would be the favorites to win, but Panionios has been strong at home and should otherwise be the favorites with its strong fan base backing the players.

GAME QUOTES

Panionios On Telecoms
  • For the second week in a row, Demos Dikoudis will face a former teammate from his days at AEK Athens and the Greek national team. Last week it was Nikos Zisis from CSKA Moscow and now it’s Efes Pilsen’s Michalis Kakiouzis. The three of them helped AEK to win the 2002 Greek Championship and the 2001 Greek Cup and later helped the Greek national team to win the gold medal at the 2005 European Championships and the silver medal at the 2006 World Championships.
  • Guard Ioannis Kalampokis scored a Euroleague career-high 17 points the last time he faced Efes Pilsen.
Efes Pilsen
  • Guard Milos Vujanic needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Bootsy Thornton is closing in on 1,000 points for his Euroleague career. Thornton enters his team’s Week 8 game with 986 points in 92 career games.
  • Forward Michailis Kakiouzis needs only 9 more defensive rebounds to reach 500 for his career – a feat only seven players to date have accomplished.
  • Big man Kerem Gonlum needs just 1 more steal to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Guard Ender Arslan played for Panionios during the 2006-07 season. He started that season with Olimpija Ljubljana and then played for Tau Vitoria before finishing the year with Panionios.

Quotes Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Panionios On Telecoms
"The upcoming game is very important for both teams, Panionios and Efes Pilsen. We enter Week 8 of the Euroleague as our team has to prove that the three wins so far didn't just happen by luck. We know Efes Pilsen is an offensive team with excellent players. Our goal is to reduce their scoring ability and generally their offensive action, as the upcoming game is very crucial for our future in the competition. We have a full roster with no injuries and definitely we are determined to give our best to beat Efes Pilsen."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"It’s going to be the most important game in the group for both sides. This will be one of the last three games, but according to the positions of the teams, it has a special meaning for the determination. We had a very good game against Turk Telekom at the weekend and I think we went far enough with the progress of our defensive game. I’m hopeful about my team that they will play better than the game we played against Panionios on Telecoms in Istanbul. They knew that there’s no game more important than this one. We are going there to win and I hope we get what we want."

"The game against Efes Pilsen is the most important of the season, since a win can give us the opportunity to get closer towards the Euroleague Top16. Making the next round is a dream for our team, as most of the basketball fans thought it would be impossible after hearing our opponents' names during the Euroleague draw. We beat Efes Pilsen in Istanbul, so why can't we repeat it? We know the way to stop them in our home court, which is going to host a large number of our fans. We are ready to fight without fear and pressure and I think we have the potential to beat them again and open the way towards the qualification."
GULER, SINAN
Efes Pilsen
"Obviously we will play the most important game of the group stage until this moment. In my opinion, to handle the stress will be the key to win the game for both teams. The good thing is that we have many experienced players, familiar to these kind of stressful matches. Panionios on Telecoms proved in the first game that they are a good team, playing in a good harmony of the team game. We knew our mistakes in the first game and will be trying not to repeat them in Athens. And of course, we will try to win and take revenge to strengthen our Top 16 chances."
Bootsy Thornton celebrates - Efes PilsenEfes Pilsen grabbed sole possession of third place in hotly-contested Group D with a 64-78 road win at Panionios On Telecoms on Thursday in Athens, Greece. Efes dominated early, outscoring Panionios 11-25 in the first quarter to establish a comfortable lead that would serve it the rest of the way. As such, head coach Ergin Ataman's men boosted their record to 4-4 wile avenging a nine-point home loss to Panionios earlier this season. The point difference Thursday could yet prove crucial, as Efes has a tough schedule remaining: CSKA Moscow visiting after end-of-year break and a trip to Real Madrid looming in Week 10. Panionios dropped to 3-5, but remains tied for fourth place with Partizan Belgrade and Armani Jeans Milano, the two teams left on its schedule. Bootsy Thornton led Efes with a season-high 18 points, going over 1,000 for his Euroleague career in the process. Kerem Gonlum added a season-best 17 off the bench, while Michailis Kakiouzis netted 15 and Charles Smith had 10. Miroslav Raicevic led Panionios with a career-high 22 points, Lonny Baxter added 12 and Ioannis Kalampokis scored 11 in defeat.

Dimos Dikoudis - Panionios On TelecomsEfes started in style, blasting ahead 0-7 as Kakiouzis connected for 5 points and dished an assist to Kaya Peker. Kalampokis and Demos Dikoudis scored the first baskets for Panionios after almost 3 minutes, but soon the guests rallied again, this time an 0-8 blast thanks to points by Kakiouzis, Smith, Peker and Thornton. Down now by 4-15, Panionios continued struggling to get connected even while looking inside for points. As a result, Efes found easy baskets on the other end to increase the difference in leaps and bounds, until finally a downtown rifle shot by Smith made it 8-25. The only reaction by Panionios was a triple by Kalampokis for 11-25 as the first period ended.

Gonlum's baseline jumper made it 11-27 to start the second quarter, prompting Panionios to press full-court. The results came straight away: two steals that Kalampokis and Dikoudis converted to make it 15-27. Efes got to the line, however, to double the hosts on the board 15-30. Ivan Zoroski and Branko Cvetkovic came off the bench with a basket each from to bring Panionios within 19-30, but again Efes found solutions punctuated by a sky-hook from Gonlum at 19-37. Panionios faced a three-minute scoring silence until Baxter scored in the paint and stopped Arslan on the defensive end. Raicevic popped in a jumper to get the hosts closer, and in the final 20 seconds before the half, Panionios used the press to steal twice from Efes and on consecutive layups by Cvetkovic trim the difference to 27-37.

Michalis Kakiouzis - Efes PilsenKakiouzis open the scoring after the break, too, but the confidence of Panionios seemed really boosted after its last-minute performance in the second quarter. Raicevic and Aaron Miles cut into the difference, and when Baxter and Raicevic dunked in succession, the hosts had an 18-4 run over 4-plus minutes since the previous quarter and were as close as 37-41. Kakiouzis was ready to step up again for Efes, however. He drew consecutive fouls to make 4 of 4 free throws and supply a 37-45 safety cushion for the visitors. When Smith nailed a triple at 39-48, Panionios didn't flag. Raicevic dunked again and Kalampokis recorded his fifth steal to allow get the hosts back within 43-48. Kalampokis and Raicevic continued to become the go-to players for Panionios as the former dished his eighth assist to the latter at 49-52. Raicevic had already scored 11 points after coming in off the bench to replace Levon Kendall, who got injured early in the second quarter. Efes didn't panic, though; but rather Milos Vujanic fired in a three-pointer as the difference stood at 52-59 after 30 minutes.

On the first scoring play of the final quarter, Gonlum beat the 24-second shot-clock buzzer from behind the arc to send the margin to double digits again, 52-62. As Panionios could not connect for 4 minutes, Efes kept adding to the difference with Kakiouzis scoring with his left hand at 52-66. Raicevic offered a couple of solutions to Panionios from inside and outside the three-point line, making it 57-68. Still, the visitors were now using the clock, prolonging their possessions, and when Gonlum scored in the post it was 57-70. Raicevic, having his best Euroleague performance ever, connected for a dunk-plus-free throw at 60-70. As there was no time left for Panionios to go for the victory, both teams had in mind the nine-point difference by which Panionios had won their first game, in Istanbul. Preston Shumpert and Thornton added to the Efes lead, however, and even that potential tie-break advantage belonged to the visitors at the end.

Head Coaches

TRIFUNOVIC, ALEKSANDAR
Panionios On Telecoms
"We didn’t manage to live up to the expectations. We didn’t handle the pressure. Efes Pilsen won with committing only 15 fouls and we are responsible for that. We are a good team offensively only when we play good defense. When we try to do the opposite, we come up bad on both offense and defense. We went to the free throw line only for a few times tonight; that proves how little aggressive we were. In the third quarter we followed the right path and that allowed us to come close. However, we didn’t play as confident in order to fully come back. I think some players work more for themselves and not for the team. They don’t give their best for the team effort."
ATAMAN, ERGIN
Efes Pilsen
"We got one of the most important wins of the season so far. We reached the highest standard in terms of concentration and acted according to the plan concerning the pressing of Panionios playmaker Miles. We kept the ball out of his hands and the hosts did not have the opportunity to set up their pick-and-roll plays. In the first quarter we were great, but in the second we committed some stupid mistakes that allowed Panionios to breath. Fortunately, we soon regained control of the game. We managed to win by 14; that could prove the key for qualification. Kakiouzis had his best performance in an Efes Pilsen uniform and I hope that this will boost his confidence."

Players

BAXTER, LONNY
Panionios On Telecoms
"We didn’t play well tonight. After having won in Istanbul, we felt the pressure to beat Efes at home and as it turned out we failed to handle this pressure. We managed to come as close to make it a 3-point-game, but nothing more than that. We all feel sad, but have to focus on the next games."
KAKIOUZIS, MICHAILIS
Efes Pilsen
"This was an important game for us. We managed to win and to cover the difference of our home loss. We had an excellent first period and kept our nerve when Panionios trimmed the margin. It’s normal for me to feel nice to come back in Greece, but I don’t want to say anything about my performance. I always to try to help my team to win, that’s all."
