THE TAKE

Last season's Euroleague finalists meet again with history very much in play as CSKA hosts Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv on Tuesday night in the Russian capital for Game 1 of their best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series. As the most dominant Euroleague teams in recent years, accounting for the last three titles between them, CSKA and Maccabi are candidates to eventually be called the team of the decade. CSKA is the defending champion and has made four consecutive Final Four appearances. Maccabi won the previous two trophies and has played in the last three title games. A remarkable run will continue for one of these teams and will end for the other. CSKA and Maccabi are no strangers in meeting in big games, as they've squared off three times in Final Fours since 2000. Maccabi also won the last time they met in Russia as Nikola Vujcic had 17 points and 11 rebounds to give Maccabi an 80-83 victory in February 2004. But CSKA has had the upped hand recently, as it topped Maccabi 83-79 in the title game last year in Prague behind a brilliant performance by Theo Papaloukas. CSKA also scored a 90-81 pre-season win in Cologne, Germany last October as part of the NBA Europe Live Tournament as Matjaz Smodis leading the way with 24 points. Both teams will surely arrive super-focused after recent upsets in their domestic leagues. The Russian champs have won 17 consecutive Euroleague games heading into the series, however CSKA head coach Ettore Messina knows not to underestimate a Maccabi team that features experienced, big-game stars like Vujcic, Tal Burstein and Derrick Sharp. The key matchup of the series could see Vujcic, Maccabi's All-Euroleague center, battle CSKA's deep frontline of David Andersen, Aleksey Savrasenko and Tomas Van den Spiegel. How much help Vujcic gets from rookie Lior Eliyahu and reserve Jamie Arnold, both of whom will need to contend with Smodis on defense, could determine how things go inside. On the perimeter, a pair of substitutes, Final Four MVP Papaloukas and Sharp, could go a long way towards setting the tone of the series, with both pumping up their forces from the bench. On-the-ball defensive ace J.R. Holden and sniper Trajan Landon make up the starting CSKA backcourt, while recently arrived Oscar Torres holds forth at small forward in the absence of injured David Vanterpool. Young guard Anton Ponkrashov joins Papaloukas as the team's main solutions on the bench. Will Bynum, Burstein and Simas Jasaitas figure to start for Maccabi head coach Neven Spahija, with Yotam Halperin and Goran Jeretin as well as Sharp seeing big minutes off the bench. The biggest test will be for Maccabi players who have never been in games of this magnitude, such as Bynum, Jeretin and Eliyahu, while Torres fits the same description for CSKA. If Maccabi's players withstand the pressure, Game 1 could turn into a classic encounter, but if CSKA's defense commands the stage once again, Messina's men can continue dreaming of back-to-back Euroleague titles. It will take the heart of a champion, a quality well-documented on both squads, to win this series.

Quotes Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"It is a serious series with a longtime rival. Maccabi has excellent players and coaches. It doesn't matter what the team did in the regular season or up until now. They have found their rhythm and it will be a chance for the both teams to test themselves in games under pressure."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Like every game between Maccabi and CSKA, it's going to be a good and interesting one. They are favorites, but we are not underdogs. I expect a very tough game, and a good game. We'll play under less pressure. We did a very good job in the last couple of days, and the latest domestic league losses did not effect us or our confidence. CSKA is one of the best teams in Europe. It's going to be a very tough and physical game. We'll play with more players than usual, so we'll be able to play a more up-tempo game all the time. If we reach the end of the game with a close score, we'll have a chance to take the win, but that won't be easy. We'll have to play good enough. CSKA has many good aspects: They have experience, they play for the second season under the same coach, and they play with unbelievable discipline."

Players

LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"The first game and the whole series would be tough. Maccabi played in the last three Final Fours and they know how to get there. So do we. They are one of the best organizations in Europe, and we should put all our effort into the series."
ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite
"I didn't play against CSKA in the finals last season, but I hear how people talk about it in the club, and I know pretty well myself what it means. The rivalry between Maccabi and CSKA goes back many, many years and this could be another classic match. We'll try our best in the first game, because we know we have to win in Moscow to make it to the Final Four. It's not going to be easy. We played them in the pre-season and they beat us, but now the season is on the line, and we'll do whatever it takes to show what we've got. Hopefully, it will be enough. We want to come back to Tel Aviv with a smile on our face, but CSKA is probably the best team in Europe now, so we know we'll be facing a very difficult task."
Trajan Langdon - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow is a step closer to qualifying for its fifth consecutive Final Four after thrashing Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv 80-58 in Game 1 of the best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs in the Russian capital on Tuesday night. CSKA will have a chance to finish the deal on Thursday when Maccabi hosts Game 2 at Nokia Arena. CSKA was close to breaking its own record for fewest points allowed in a Quarterfinal Playoffs game – it beat Efes Pilsen 66-57 in Game 1 of last year's playoffs. Trajan Langdon led the winners with 16 points. David Andersen added 14, J.R. Holden 12 and Thomas Van den Spiegel 11 – including four spectacular dunks in the final 2 minutes. Oscar Torres grabbed 10 rebounds and Theo Papaloukas came off the bench to turn things around early and finished with 8 assists. Nikola Vujcic led Maccabi with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Langdon and Andersen each fired in two triples during a 15-1 run that gave CSKA a 22-6 lead after 10 minutes. CSKA hit 8-of-16 triples and outrebounded its opponents 19-10 in the first half for a 40-22 halftime lead. Maccabi never threatened in the second half and Van den Spiegel's slams sealed CSKA's win in style.

CSKA won the opening tip and scored quickly as Torres attacked the basket. After 2-and-a-half minutes, Tal Burstein put Maccabi on the board with a pair of free throws. Matjaz Smodis answered with a three-pointer on the other end, but Burstein answered in form to make it 6-5. Maccabi was able to force the pace it wanted, but unable to convert it into a lead. Meanwhile CSKA had trouble scoring, committing 4 early turnovers. However when Papaloukas came in midway through the period, everything changed. CSKA began to capitalize on its opportunities, with Aleksey Savrasenko scoring inside and Langdon from outside for an 11-5 lead. Papaloukas then fed Langdon and Andersen joined the three-point festival, forcing Maccabi to call timeout at 17-6. Andersen stayed on fire and hit another three-pointer before Thomas Van den Spiegel capped a 15-1 run with a free throw to give CSKA a 22-6 lead after 10 minutes.

Nikola Vujcic - Maccabi EliteNikola Vujcic tried to ignit the visitors' comeback with a jump hook early in the second quarter, but J.R. Holden answered from downtown to give CSKA a 16-point lead. Maccabi tried a zone defense, but Langdon beat it with back-to-back triples that made it 30-10. Andersen made free throws, which Noel Felix erased with a reverse dunk. A big block by Vujcic allowed Will Bynum to score at the other end and CSKA called timeout to regroup. Bynum kept pacing Maccabi with free throws, which Holden erased with a tough jumper. CSKA started to dominate the boards while Holden hit a long jumper in transition. Langdon and Vujcic exchanged free throws before Andersen buried a turnaround jumper for a 40-19 CSKA lead. Vujcic nailed a three-pointer to get Maccabi within 40-22 at halftime.

The halftime break didn't help Maccabi much, as the Israeli champs came out flat. Bynum and Goran Jeretin both missed pull-up threes, while on the other end, Torres scored on the offensive glass and Smodis converted a three-point play. Simas Jasaitas's tip-in on the offensive glass ended a stretch of nearly 3 minutes without a Maccabi basket. CSKA methodically picked Maccabi's defense apart with Smodis and Van den Spiegel getting easy baskets for a 49-26 lead. Jamie Arnold carried the Maccabi attack on his back for 7 consecutive Tel Aviv points to get within 51-33. However Holden and Andersen combined to restore a 22-point CSKA lead and after Yotam Halperin's buzzer-beating three rimmed out, the third quarter ended with the hosts up 56-34.

Thomas Van Den Spiegel - CSKA MoscowPapaloukas zipped a perfect pass inside to Savrasenko and then stepped up with a jumper of his own as the lead reached 26. The looks on the Maccabi players said it all as the last quarter became for protocol only. Holden thrilled the crowd with a spin move and a jumper and the hosts defense never relented on the other end. Sharon Shason hit a three for his first points to make it 66-41. Shason hit another to avoid letting the difference get to embarrassing depths for Maccabi. Van den Spiegel threw down four slams in the last 2 minutes – including one at the buzzer – to finish the show as the Russian champs took a step closer to Athens.

Head Coaches

MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"I think we played a good game and clearly won it. We came to the court concentrated and were aggressive enough in the first quarter. We managed to keep on playing good defense into the second quarter. And after a good start following the halftime break, it seems Maccabi thought we would continue the same way until the end."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I would like to congratulate CSKA. It was impressive. I suppose CSKA and PAO are the best teams in Europe right now. We had a plan, but I couldn't expect that the destiny of the game would be decided in the first quarter. However, we could be better, if we didn't spoil the start. Our 9 turnovers and 11 offensive rebounds - these numbers are not that bad if you are facing CSKA."

Players

LANGDON, TRAJAN
CSKA Moscow
"As usual, the key to our win was great defense. We were able to make shots, we were able to rebound, we were able to make a quick start. You always want that kind of the beginning of any game. We had a 15-point lead after the first quarter - and didn't lose it."
TORRES, OSCAR
CSKA Moscow
"Everybody played 100% defense tonight. We were a stone and Maccabi couldn't move us in any direction. They scored only 58 points – it's not the right way to win at playoffs. But I can't say that Maccabi was bad. We were just too concentrated on our aim during the game to give them even a slight chance to comeback."
ARNOLD, JAMIE
Maccabi Elite
"CSKA was the team it was expected to be - tough and ruthless. Simply, they are champions. They know each other for a long time and know how to use their best sides perfectly. Moreover, CSKA was really prepared for the game. We lost our offensive intensity very soon and CSKA punished us. We played not the worst defense, but it can't help if you shoot that awfully."
BURSTEIN, TAL
Maccabi Elite
"We had not yet faced a team as aggressive and powerful. I don't think that this is the real difference between Maccabi and CSKA. They finished the game in the first quarter. Now we need to win back our respect. I hope to be back here next week, but it will be very difficult."
