THE TAKE

CEZ Nymburk hopes to bounce back from its first defeat of the Eurocup season, but will face a stiff test at home against undefeated iurbentia Bilbao. Head coach Muli Katzurin's Czech champs dropped to 1-1 after an 82-74 loss at Hemofarm Stada. Nymburk held Hemofarm to 3 of 17 (18%) from long range, but allowed the hosts to shoot 53% for the game while hitting only 44% itself. Katzurin's team also made 8 of 8 (100%) foul shots, but watched as Hemofarm went to the line more than twice as often. Nymburk also committed only 12 turnovers, but forced Hemofarm to turn the ball over only 13 times. Guard Justin Gray led Katzurin's team with 17 points, while guard Arthur Lee had 16 points, 4 assists and 4 steals. And forward Ladislav Sokolovsky chipped in 10 points off the bench. Forward Blake Schilb added 8 points and 7 rebounds and forward Goran Jagodnik also hit for 8 points. But Katzurin knows that his team will need to get better offensive execution to beat the European newcomer from Bilbao. Head coach Txus Vidorreta's iurbentia Bilbao improved to 2-0 with 67-65 victory at Buducnost, which featured a fourth quarter comeback including more than seven minutes without a point for Buducnost. The Spanish team shot 50% from the field and forced 24 Buducnost turnovers. Vidorreta's men however allowed Buducnost to hit 51% from the floor, including 10 of 24 (42%) from long range. And Bilbao was outrebounded 28-20. But the turnovers and a Bilbao free-throw advantage of 18 of 20 (90%) to 11 of 16 (69%) proved to be the difference. Guard Javi Salgado came off the bench for 20 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for Vidorreta. And forward Quincy Lewis added 10 points as did forward Marko Banic. Bilbao also got 9 points and 6 rebounds from center Frederic Weis. With a victory over Nymburk and a Buducnost win at home over Hemofarm, Vidorreta's Bilbao side would own a two-game lead over all three other teams in the group.

Quotes Head Coaches

KATZURIN, MULI
CEZ Nymburk
"Bilbao is the strongest team in our group, coming from the best league in Europe. For us it is a home game and a must-win situation. Only by winning home games are there chances to advance to the next round. It will be again a tough game, Bilbao has the experience and the quality."
VIDORRETA, TXUS
iurbentia Bilbao
"We have to take maximum advantage of the streak we're on. We have an opportunity, although not yet mathematical, to put ourselves very close in the standings to a qualification for the next Eurocup round. Our mentality will be to go there at 100 percent to win and not think at all of the next games. Nymburk has two combination guards, Arthur Lee and Justin Grey, who have the ball in their hands practically the whole time. They have another American small forward who plays a lot of minutes at power forward, good shooters from the Eastern European school and two experienced, tough big men in Tomaszek and Jagodnik. If we play a good defensive game, we'll have chances, but we have to respect them because they did very well in this competition last season."

SOKOLOVSKY, LADISLAV
CEZ Nymburk
"It is an important game for us, since we play on the home court. Bilbao is a strong and tough team that won the two first games of the regular season and that is showing its quality. We are looking forward to our fans making a great atmosphere in our arena and having a chance to see a high quality basketball again."
Janis Blums - iurbentia Bilbaoiurbentia Bilbao Basket got closer to become the first team to reach the Last 16 round in Group H by downing CEZ Nymburk 79-92 on the road in Pardubice, the Czech Republic on Tuesday night. iurbentia improved to 3-0 and will qualify to the next round if it downs Nymburk when both teams face again in Bilbao next week. Meanwhile, Nymburk dropped to 1-2 and needs and has crucial games against Buducnost m:tel and Hemofarm Stada in early 2009. Ladislav Sokolovsky added 15, Justin Gray and Blake Schilb each had 12 while Arthur Lee got 10 for the hosts. Renaldas Seibutis, Recker, Blums and Salgado stepped up after the break to give Bilbao a 63-70 margin after 30 minutes. Blums and Lewis combined for all points in a 0-11 run that broke the game open, 63-81, and Bilbao never looked back.

A three-point play by Banic got Bilbao going while a layup by Seibutis gave his team a 0-5 edge. Schilb and Lee stepped up for Nymburk but Recker and Blums fueled a 0-7 run to keep Bilbao ahead at 5-12. Jagodnik followed one from downtown with free throws but Blums and Drago Pasalic sank back-to-back triples for an eight-point Bilbao edge, 10-18. Three-pointers by Jagodnik and Gray got Nymburk within 20-22, but Salva Guardia and Banic scored inside while Salgado hit a triple to make it a nine-point game, 22-31, after 10 minutes. Sokolovsky and Fred Weis traded layups early in the second quarter while Salgado struck again from downtown to give Bilbao its first double-digit lead, 26-36. Nymburk did not panic, however, as Schilb dunked it, Petr Benda scored off a steal and Lee followed a triple with consecutive baskets that made Bilbao call timeout at 37-39. Michal Kremen dunked it, Jagodnik stayed on fire while a three-pointer by Sokolovsky tied the game at 44-44. Blums sank free throws to restore a 44-46 Bilbao edge at halftime.

Blake Schilb - CEZ NymburkRecker followed a layup with a triple right after the break but Sokolovsky and Jagodnik answered from downtown in a 7-0 run that tied the game again, 51-51. Seibutis and Recker stepped up right in time to fuel a 0-8 Bilbao run, good for a 51-59 margin. Jagodnik buried another three-pointer and soon added a layup, as Bilbao struggled to score late in the third quarter. Free throws by Kremen and another triple by Sokolovsky brought the hosts back to life, 61-62. Guardia and Blums made free throws while Salgado sank a three-pointer for a 63-70 Bilbao margin after 30 minutes. Lewis nailed a triple and followed Blums' shot from downtown with a layup-plus-foul that broke the game open, 63-79, early in the fourth quarter. Nymburk went scoreless for 3 minutes while Blums capped a game-breaking 0-11 Bilbao run with free throws. Gray tried to change things with a three-pointer but Bilbao stayed focused through an unstoppable Lewis. Everything was said and done already, as Bilbao Basket left the court as one of the few teams unbeaten in the Eurocup so far this season and closer to the Last 16 round.

CEZ Nymburk
"Today's game was a good lesson for us. We played against one of the quality European clubs. Bilbao showed better quality than us, however, I must say I am proud of my players who fought all game. Bilbao has a very deep bench with an eleven men rotation. On the contrary we got into trouble when we had to use the end of our bench. In addition, Bilbao shot the ball best from the three-point line all season. I thought we had advantage with a quicker line up in the first half but when we got tired in second half the advantage went to Bilbao with a bigger and slower line up."
VIDORRETA, TXUS
iurbentia Bilbao
"The game was close for 30 minutes of the game. We were slightly up but could not really take over the game to open up a big gap. We always let Nymburk back in the game by making three or four elementary mistakes. I know we shot the ball from three with a very high percentage. This combined with more experience and better domestic competition that prepares us well for Eurocup were the reasons for our win today. I think Nymburk gave a good effort today and overall I would say it was a good game to watch for all basketball fans."
