THE TAKE

Lottomatica will look to climb out of the Group B cellar when it hosts DKV Joventut on Wednesday in Rome, Italy. Both teams are coming off of tough road losses and will be looking to bounce back with some new faces. Roma (1-3) played three strong quarters last week in Athens against Panathinaikos before falling short 87-71. For the second game in a row, Roma was led by Dejan Bodiroga and Vlado Ilievski. This week, they might be joined by point guard Mire Chatman, who could make his debut for coach Jasmin Repesa. Meanwhile, injury-riddled Joventut (2-2) went down 92-75 at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Former Roma forward Lubos Barton increased his scoring output for the fourth week in a row, while Charles Gaines posted a season-high 16 points for Joventut, which was without star guard Rudy Fernandez and center Andrew Betts. But Barton now joins the injury list with a foot problem, while Fernandez is again questionable this week and Betts is out for the rest of the month. New center Roberto Dueñas played 5 minutes and should have a much larger role this week. A lot of players on these teams know each other weel. Barton will see ex-teammates Alex Righetti and Alessandro Tonolli, with whom he played when Roma was in the Euroleague in 2003-04. Dueñas won a Euroleague title together with Bodiroga at Barcelona in 2003, where Ilievski joined them the following season. Roma center Ognjen Askrabic is quickly becoming a key part of the team's gameplan, making his matchup against Dueñas and foul-prone Robert Archibald one to watch. Likewise, Joventut point guard Elmer Bennett's ability to handle Ilievski (11.2 ppg.) and possibly Chatman could be a turning point. But the most important duel will likely pit Bodiroga (15 ppg., 5.2 rpg., 3.5 apg.) against Andrew Sullivan or Ferran Laviña, whose hustle could impact the game and turn the momentum if the visitors fall behind. They'll have their work cut out for them against Roma's ageless forward, who has been at his best this season while making those around him better. The hosts' wildcard could be shooting guard David Hawkins, who has struggled so far this season, but could be a game-breaker if he gets going this week. Joventut coach Aito Reneses Garcia will have to make wise use of his bench to keep his banged-up team in the picture, making teenage sensation Ricky Rubio an important piece of the puzzle. The game will feel like a must-win for both teams, as they look to bounce back from recent defeats in this first-ever meeting between the sides.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
“DKV Joventut is a very strong team, very aggressive. They have a very good fastbreak and the most interesting young players in Europe at the moment, Rubio and Fernandez, a star in their league with sure NBA perspective. It is a team with some problems due to injuries but the coach is one of the most experienced coach around, he won everything in his national championship. If we want to enter the Top 16 we have to win. After such a difficult schedule – three games played abroad – we now have the chance to play in Rome and we can not do wrong.”

RIGHETTI, ALEX
Lottomatica Roma
"They will come to Rome and play well, that’s for sure, but we have to win the next games, starting Wednesday. There are not particular aspects of the match we have to take care of; we need to take care of them all at this point, in this kind of competition. There is a huge difference between playing in the Euroleague and in the Italian national Championship. The game is tougher; the referees accept more physical contact. Under the basket the fight is rough and who plays hard has often the last word."
Alex Righetti - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica roared back from a double-digit deficit at halftime to rally past visiting DKV Joventut 71-69 at home in Rome, Italy on Wednesday. The result left both teams with 2-3 records in Group B and awaiting a Thursday game to find out whether they are tied for fourth place or fifth. Roma looked in trouble before a 0-8 start to the second half got the hosts back in the game, although it wasn't midway through the final quarter that they took the lead. Alex Righetti was the big gun for Roma with 16 points, including a three-pointer with 50 seconds left that sealed the outcome. Ognjen Askrabic added 13 points, Vlado Ilievski 12 and Dejan Bodiroga 11 for the winners. Paco Vazquez hit his first 6 triples of the night on his way to 19 points for Joventut, while Dimitri Flis and Charles Gaines added 11 each. Gaines also had 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Askrabic got Roma rolling with a triple on a third-chance possession to start the game, but points would become scarce soon. Joventut worked inside with Gaines and Archibald to take its first lead, 5-6, but Alex Righetti with free throws and Dimitrios Marmarinos on a feed from Bodiroga sent Roma up 9-6. A basket-plus-free throw by Bodiroga retained Roma's lead at 12-9 until Vazquez started heating up. His first triple put Joventut back in front, 12-13. His second and third from the arc came back-to-back and made it 13-21. Bodiroga got a layup back but Roma let Dimitri Flis put back a last-second rebound as Joventut took a 15-23 stand after 10 minutes.

Luca Garri tried to jump-start Roma with a triple to open the second quarter, but Archibal got those points back for Joventut on a dunk and the free throw that came with it. Garri's steal preceded a three-point shot by Righetti that pulled Roma within 22-27, but that's when Vazquez reappeared. His fourth and fifth blasts from downtown also came back-to-back and restored Joventut's double-digit advantage, 22-33. Flis added a jumper to that lead before Askrabic and Marmarinos tried to pull Roma back. Righetti's 3 free throws in the final minute cut the lead to 10 points, but Bennett put the finishing touches on a great half by Joventut with a triple on the last shot that left a 31-44 scoreboard for the visitors.

Paco Vazquez - DKV JoventutRoma quickly got back in the game after the break, as Ilievski and Loukas Mavrokfalides scores near the basket during an 8-0 opening run that got the hosts back to within 39-44. Joventut got a boost when Rudy Fernandez reappeared after missing games due to injury and nailed a three-pointer. But Roma kept pushing as Chatman free throws and an Ilievski layup made it 45-47. Ilievski kept going with a three-point play to make it 48-49, but Vazquez stopped that trend by stepping up for his sixth triple without a miss on the night. Roma would not be denied, however, so after more free throws took the hosts within 51-53 late in the quarter, Marmarinos broke loose to tie with a layup. Some seconds remained, however, and Bennett used them to set up a last shot that he hit from just inside the arc to keep Joventut in front, 53-55, after 30 minutes.

Gaines inside, Flis with a big triple and Andrew Sullivan with a bank shot stretched Joventut's lead to 55-62 early in the final quarter. Roma went 4 minutes with only a Bodiroga jumper to its credit, but when help came from his teammates, it came in bunches. Righetti pumped in one three-pointer on an assist from Ilievski, and next itme down the floor, Tonolli copied him with a pass from Bodiroga, Like that, it was 61-62, and on the next play, Tonolli fed Askrabic underneath for the go-ahead layup. A long minute plus a timeout passed before Sullivan drove and made a jump-hook to take the lead back for the visitors, but Boridoga immedately posted up the shorter Vazquez to put Roma ahead for good. After Askrabic and Gaines exchanged free throws, it was a one-point game, 67-66, going into the final minute. Joventut had missed a pair of opportunities, but Righetti made sure of his next one, a triple with 50 seconds left that proved to be the deciding shot. Joventut tried an alley-oop out of its next timeout, but only got closer on a last second triple by Sullivan after the outcome was clear in Roma's favor.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
'I'm happy now for our win, because we needed it to stay on track. But our first half was really shameful. When we were back in the locker room, I said to my players, 'Whoever among you is ready to come back on the court to fight and try to win the game, come back on the court. All the others, please remain here. If we want to reach our goals, this is the moment to prove our character.' They did it and we played a good second half, focused on our goal, and took the win, and probably we increased our confidence.”
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
“We played a good game despite missing a lot of players. We suffered in the second half their great reaction, when they showed more desire to get the win in the final minutes. We were close to taking it, but we missed a pair of clutch shots, and in a game of this level, one mistake can be the difference. Congratulations to them for their second half, and to my young players who went on the court with great pride.”

Players

TONOLLI, ALESSANDRO
Lottomatica Roma
"We went on the court with a bad head in the the first half, and this is the reason for our minus 13. When we came back from the lockers, our approach was really different, we started playing defense, and a team-oriented offense, and we climbed and took the lead, and in the final minutes we were realy focused and took the win. This second home win was necessary to stay in the run to reach the Top 16, we had a strange schedule by playing three streak games on the road, but I think now we have more confidence, and the next game in Zagreb will be crucial."
RIGHETTI, ALEX
Lottomatica Roma
“We played a bad first half and were not so focused against a team strong like Joventut Badalona, but we came back from halftime with great concentration. We needed to play more physically and to get in the open court, and we did it. My teammates were very good in creating open shots for me. I didn't make them all, but I did score the important ones. Also the free throws of Ilievski and the baskets by Bodiroga were crucial. We lost all our games on the road, and tonight was so important to get this success. This is the way to follow to reach the Top 16.”
