THE TAKE

Climamio's battle for survival in Group A continues as it hosts Efes Pilsen on Wednesday in Bologna, Italy. It could be a do-or-die game for Climamio (4-8), which is still looking for the Top 16 spot and will run out of chances if it loses and Prokom Trefl Sopot, now fifth at 5-7, is able to defeat Tau Ceramica on the road. Meanwhile, Efes Pilsen (7-5) has already qualified to the Top 16 and even though it sits fourth in the standings, could yet move up as high as second place. When these teams faced off in Istanbul, Turkey last December, Climamio got a 72-74 win, its first in Group A after five consecutive losses. David Bluthenthal (15.1 ppg., 46.7% 3FG) led the winners with 18 points while Drew Nicholas (14.9 ppg., 45.7% 3FG) had 23 for Efes. Climamio has found its go-to guys in Stefano Mancinelli (10.1 ppg., 2.5 spg.) and Marco Belinelli (13.1 ppg.), who have led their team to season-reviving victories in the last couple of games. Mancinelli is a mismatch for opposing defenses due to his versatility, range and quickness, but will have a tough opponent in up-and-coming swingman Cenk Akyol (6.7 ppg.). Meanwhile, Belinelli will test his shooting skills against Nicholas and Horace Jenkins (13.7 ppg.). Tyus Edney (12.4 ppg., 3.8 apg.) is Climamio's on-court leader, sharing point guard duty with Daniele Cavaliero (3.8 ppg.) against Jenkins and Cuneyt Erden. The battle in the paint will be interesting, as Climamio features James Thomas (10.7 ppg., 10.1 rpg.), the top rebounder of the competition, who earned co-MVP honors last week. He will face Marcus Haislip (15.1 ppg., 41.2% 3FG, 2.2 bpg.), the best shot blocker in the competition, as well as a unique athlete who has extended his range to three-point territory this season. Haislip will have plenty of help around the basket with Ermal Kuqo (9.7 ppg.), Nikola Prkacin (7.2 ppg.) and Kerem Gonlum (5.1 ppg., 63.9% 2FG). Meanwhile, Thomas and Bluthenthal will be backed up by Vasco Evtimov (4.8 ppg., 4.3 rpg.) and Mancinelli, who is set to see playing time at the power forward spot, too. Climamio is in a tough situation, but can expect Efes, coming off its best game of the season at Olympiacos and after having lost big games to the hosts in recent years, not to show any mercy. So expect nothing but a clash of titans at Land Rover Arena on Wednesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
"Against Efes Pilsen we will play all our residual chances. If we win, we could go to Poland next week with the goal of a one-point win. If so, I would say that we would have a 51-percent chance to advance. If we lose, we will play Prokom Trefl searching for a 15-point win. And in that case, it would be just a five-percent possibility to make it. So, the Euroleague is definitely in our hands. Anyway, we have two very difficult games in front of us and beating Efes Pilsen tomorrow will be more difficult than beating Tau last week. We have to play tough defense and run the court. The Efes team is very strong and will come to Bologna still playing for the standings, because they can finish with a second-level seeding in the Top 16 draw. They flew to Bologna with all their players, they just beat Olympiacos by 20 on the road and I’m sure they want to get their revenge after our win at Abdi Ipekci in November. Their strong side is under the boards, with four aggressive big men who play at the same level, strong both on offense and on defense. Their weak side? I know it, but I can’t tell you."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"We guaranteed our place in the Top 16 with the victory against Olympiacos last week. Now we are aiming to have a better position in our group. So there’s another important game waiting for us in Bologna. This game is also very important for Climamio Bologna. They are playing for Top 16 and they are going to play with the home advantage. Consequently, it’s going to be a very very tough game again on the road in Bologna for us."

"To beat Efes Pilsen we need a contribution from all the players. We caught a key win against Tau Vitoria by playing almost all the time with the starting five, but we know our bench is ready to play and give what the coach wants. Efes Pilsen is a very strong team that did not win at Athens by chance. They are playing for the top places in the standings, so it will be a hard game. Anyway, we are playing all our chances to advance and we will step on court with confidence, knowing that our crowd can be a real sixth man. We lost our last Italian League game because we let Udine dictate the tempo. We have to learn to be more hungry and Wednesday night against Efes Pilsen is the right game in which to show it."

Efes Pilsen
"We are going to play one of the toughest games of the season against Climamio Bologna for sure. Our performance is getting better every coming game, and that’s good for the next stage, too. But we still have our mission to complete in the regular season. We played great defense for most of the game against Olympiacos, and that’s what we have to repeat against Climamio, too. If we can beat them, it’s going to be a good advantage for us to take the third place in the group."
Drew Nicholas - Efes Pilsen Efes Pilsen continued to improve on its chances of a higher finish in Group A when it pulled off a thrilling 74-76 road win against Climamio in Bologna, Italy on Wednesday. Horace Jenkins scored 11 points in the last 3 minutes and Drew Nicholas blocked Climamio's three-point try to win the game at the buzzer as Efes raised its record to 8-5, setting itself up for a possible run at second place in the final week of the season. Climamio, now 4-9, now has a tougher path to the Top 16: it must win the regular season finale on the road at Prokom (5-7) by 15 points or more and hope that Le Mans loses one of its last two games. Marcus Haislip led Efes with 17 points, while Ermal Kuqo added 16, Jenkins 15 and Nicholas 13. For Climamio, David Bluthenthal fired in 26 points, including 6 three-pointers, 5 of which fell in the first 12 minutes. Tyus Edney added 11 points and Marco Belinelli 10 for Climamio, which could not hold onto an eight-point lead, 66-58, with 5 minutes left.

Efes Pilsen started in high gear as Nicholas drilled a three-pointer coming off screens and Haslip made it 0-5 with a turnaround move. Bluthenthal got Climamio going with a three-pointer and Marco Belinelli dunked on the baseline for a 5-7 score after 2 minutes. Although Nicholas got loose for another three-pointer, Bluthenthal caught up and passe dhim with back-to-back triples to make it 11-12. Efes filled the lane on defense and denied penetration while going up 11-16 as Kuqo scored on a put-back. Bluthenthal, however, found his fourth straight three-pointer to keep Climamio within 14-16. Efes kept feeding its centers as Kuqo scored easily again and Haislip landed a three-pointer to make it 16-21. While continuing to stop Climamio's attack, Efes used a backdoor pass from Jenkins to Nicholas to fix a 16-23 scoreboard after 10 minutes.

Bluthenthal’s fifth three-point shot opened the second quarter by getting Climamio within 19-23 but Haislip soon replied from the same distance. Nikola Prkacin came in and got his characteristic bucket driving in close, then Nicholas scored a long jumper for the highest lead yet, 21-30. Another basket from Bluthenthal – who had 19 points in the first 14 minutes – revived Climamio and Alain Digbeu added 4 free throws to make it 25-32. Efes kept getting baskets inside, however, as Prkacin, Kerem Gonlum and Nicholas made it 29-38. Fighting for loose balls and rebounds now, Climamio was able to post a 5-0 closing run to save the half as Evtimov put back an offensive rebound and Digbeu hit free throws to make it 34-38 at intermission.

David Bluthenthal - Climamio BolognaEdney and Kuqo exchanged free throws to open the second half, just before a layup by Jenkins made it 36-42. But Climamio reached downf for its highest effort now as Edney scored on a layup, Stefano Mancinelli converted an offensive rebound and Digbeu landed a big three-pointer to cap a 0-7 run that gave the hosts their first lead of the night, 43-42. A lone basket by Kuqo and a strong move by Prkacin helped Efes take back the scoreboard at 44-46, but Belinelli and Edney soon rebuilt a Climamio lead, 48-46. Three fouls shots by Haislip and a jumper by Kuqo returned it to Efes before Belinelli added a free throw and a wild third quarter ended 49-51 in favor of Efes.

Belinelli sought to save the day and possibly Climamio's future with 5 points in a row to open the last quarter, vaulting the hosts ahead by 54-51. Cuneyt Erden replied for Efes with a game-tying three-pointer, however. James Thomas and Kuqo exchanged baskets before Haislip's free throws made it 56-58. Climamio now uncorked its big run as Edney, Bluthenthal and Thomas reeled off 10 unanswered points that made it 66-58 with 5 minutes to play. Even when Nicholas drilled a three-pointer to revive Efes, Edney immediately matched it at the other end. Laron Profit put back an offensive rebound for Efes before Jenkins started his takeover, driving for one basket and running the break for another that brought the guests within 69-67 with less than 3 minutes on the clock. Off a timeout, Bluthenthal hit his sixth three-pointer, but Jenkins drove for another layup and Kuqo copied him to get Efes within a point, 72-61, with 90 seconds left. Climamio then suffered a turnover that Jenkins converted into free throws for a 72-73 Efes lead. Edney struck back for Climamio, feeding Thomas for a layup and a new lead, 74-73, for the hosts. But Jenkins wouldn't be denied. He drove to the hoop and scored again at 74-75. Climamio would get two more chances to go ahead, but Belinelli missed a three-pointer with 15 seconds left and, after Jenkins made 1 of 2 free throws, Mancinelli's desperation three-pointer to win it was blocked as Nicholas flew skyward and swatted it away.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Climamio Bologna
“I don’t have much to say. We played 38 great minutes, with great defense and intelligent offense. We just came short and I prefer to not comment on the last two minutes. I take full the responsibility for this loss. I am very disappointed because we have a big gap to fill. Taking a 15-point win there in Poland will be very tough. But as I said before, I take all the responsibility. Thinking about it now, I should have used more Digbeu, because Mancinelli wasn’t in the right night. Unfortunately, I haven’t been so good to see it. We’ll see the next game. I think we have only 5% chance to advance.”
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
“I think we controlled the game from the beginning. Then we lost the momentum and they were ready to come back and take the lead. But we had the right time down the stretch and we achieved this win. The game has been hard and dramatic as the first leg one and I expected it would be this way. Our rotation was cut because we have Akyol injured and Granger coming back, but most of all Haislip did a great job on offense. We struggled against Bluthenthal, but it’s not a matter of just one player, it’s a matter of helps on pick’n’rolls. Anyway, we are working hard to find consistency and build a strong team. Every day, our goal is to make an Efes Pilsen better than the day before.”

Players

EDNEY, TYUS
Climamio Bologna
“We trailed for the most of the game but we also went up by 8 points in the fourth quarter. The problem came in the last two minutes, where we did all wrong. We didn’t execute our plays and we lost the lead we built up with enthusiasm. They started banging our defense and we couldn’t stop them. Anyway, I still believe we can qualify. We know it will be hard, but we cannot give up until next week.”
NICHOLAS, DREW
Efes Pilsen
“We started the game better than them and I think we deserved it. In the third quarter and in the first minutes of the fourth they did it with aggressiveness and exploited two big things: the crowd, who always helps Fortitudo, and the big shots that Marco [Belinelli] can take and score. But you know, basketball is like that: it’s all back and forth. Thankfully, we did great in crucial possessions. Right now we are playing very good. We took a couple of big wins on the road and this in Bologna shows we keep fighting and we keep playing until the last second. For me, Marcus [Haislip] and Horace [Jenkins], all known for scoring, it took a bit to fit the new system but now we are improving day after day and the results are coming.”
