THE TAKE

A head-to-head clash with major Top 16 implications takes place in Badalona, Spain, on Wednesday when DKV Joventut hosts Alba Berlin. Joventut (4-4) will advance to the Top 16 with a win, while Alba (3-5) will run out of chances if it loses and Fenerbahce Ulker (4-4) downs bottom-of-the-table Union Olimpija in Ljubljana. Joventut revamped its frontline during the winter break by bringing back center Jerome Moiso to replace the injured Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Moiso offers shot-blocking, rebounding and athleticism to lead a deep and versatile frontcourt that also features talented big man Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, up-and-coming power forward Henk Norel and three-point specialist Jan Jagla, who will have the extra motivation of facing his hometown team. Luka Bogdanovic is ready to see playing time at either forward spot. Moiso and Hernandez-Sonseca will have a big battle in the paint against Adam Chubb, while Jagla faces a shootout against Ansu Sesay. Veteran Aleksandar Nadjfeji is Berlin’s top big man off the bench. The point guard battle will be equally interesting now that Ricky Rubio is fully recovered from his hand injury and ready to showcase his talent. He will share the point guard duties with Demond Mallet and even Pau Ribas, with Rubio and Mallet likely together on court at times too. Rubio may see some minutes at shooting guard to use his outstanding defensive skills against scoring ace Julius Jenkins. Meanwhile, Mallet will have a big battle against Rashad Wright, with Steffen Hamann offering intensity and court sense. Jenkins is ready for a key matchup against Joventut scoring machine Bracey Wright. Joventut, however, will be more concerned with stopping Immanuel McElroy, Alba's heart and soul due to his intensity, versatility, ball-handling and athleticism. Simas Jasaitis - in great shape recently - and especially Ferran Laviña will have the tough mission to guard him. Jasaitis is ready for a key matchup against three-point threat Casey Jacobsen. Joventut must run the floor and stop McElroy to advance to the Top 16 in front of its fans. Meanwhile, Alba must get Sesay and Chubb involved down low while playing slow-paced basketball with good ball circulation. This will surely be a battle of wills that could come down to the last shot.

GAME NOTES

DKV Joventut
  • Point guard Demond Mallet has made at least 1 three-pointer in 17 consecutive Euroleague appearances dating back to November 2006, when he played for Rheinenegie Cologne. He finished the 2006-07 season with a three in 10 straight games and has made at least 1 in each game this season with DKV Joventut.
  • Point guard Demond Mallet spent six seasons playing in Germany before joining Joventut. Among the former teammates he will be reunited with this week are Immanuel McElroy and Aleksandar Nadjfeji, who he played with at Koln in the 2006-07 season, and Steffen Hamann, who he played with at Brose Baskets before that.
  • Mallet has played almost twice as good at home as he has on the road this season. Mallet is averaging 13.3 points, 5.5 assists and 2 steals per game at home so far and 6.3 points, 4.3 assists and 0.3 steals.
  • Big man Jan Jagla will face his hometown club this week. Jagla is a native of Berlin. He also was a teammate with current Alba Berlin players Steffen Hamann, Patrick Femerling and Philip Zwiener on the German national team at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Alba Berlin
  • Alba Berlin has lost 16 consecutive Euroleague games on the road dating back to October 2002. The last road win for Berlin was against AEK Athens.
  • Small forward Casey Jacobson has made multiple three-pointers and is shooting 50% from downtown over his last three Euroleague games.

Quotes Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"In terms of results, Wednesday's game is the most important of the season so far for us. It's a game that will set our path in Europe, and can leave us in or out of the Top 16. I think it's a really difficult game, not only because of the condition we arrive in, but also because the team from Berlin is the host club of the Final Four and has a lot of ambition to reach the next round. But we also have to look for the rewards of our Euroleague campaing, which is to win games with a very young team. We and our fans need to bring a touch of quality to this game to try to win against Alba."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"In this tough group Alba played a competitive part and the proof is that we come to the point where with two rounds to go we are facing the deciding games that give us the opportunity to move into the next round. This game against Joventut will be a do-or-die game, but I think this game is to be approached like any other game. We had several opportunities to gain a road win sooner in the season, but we did not succeed. Now we come into a difficult game in Badalona, which is not the best place to look for your chance going through. It's a team that is playing a very powerful basketball and is ready to break down even stronger opponents than themselves. So when we talk about the possibilities, we recognize that Joventut will be the favorite in this game. But we are also aware that it's one game deciding between these two teams and that if we play this game right, we can look for a chance to win it and go to the next round."

"Wednesday's game is like a final. We're talking about a game so important that we have to win it: we don't have another option. The team can take a step forward in its growth in order to keep evolving as a team in a game like this. We'll try to respond the best way we can."
McELROY, IMMANUEL
Alba Berlin
"In the Euroleague, it is very difficult to win on the road because many teams, including us, play different on their home-court and away. Hopefully we can overcome this on Wednesday and get the win to continue to go into the Top 16. In most of our road games we had our chances, but unfortunately in the end missed the plays that could have helped us to win. I think we have to play on the road more aggressively like we do at home. We have to stay focused and stay together, especially at the end of the game."
Immanuel McElroy - Alba BerlinAlba Berlin took a giant step in reaching the Top 16 from Group C when it grabbed a thrillling 75-79 road victory at DKV Joventut in Badalona, Spain on Wednesday. Both teams now have 4-5 records. Alba would win any tie between them after the regular season ends due to having won both their games. A three-way tie with Fenerbahce (4-4) won't help Joventut, either, since it lost both their games, as well. Alba will advance to the Top 16 if it defeats last-place Union Olimpija next week. Joventut has to hope that doesn't happen, or that Fenerbahce loses its last two games, but in either case has to also beat mighty Tau Ceramica away. The difference between Alba controlling its destiny and Joventut being all but eliminated came in a back-and-forth thriller that saw Immanuel McElroy score 26 points for the winners, including 4 of 4 three-pointers and his game-ending dunk to end all doubt. Alba also received 12 points and 12 rebounds from Aleksandar Nadjfeji plus 12 points from Casey Jacobsen. Julius Jenkins finally returned to action for Alba, playing great defense while collecting 4 points and 5 assists. Alba knocked down 10 of 18 three-point shots (55%) , while Joventut made just 12 of 21 foul shots (57%) in the loss. Jan Jagla scored 15 points for Joventut while Bracey Wright hit for 13 and Edu Hernandez-Sonseca and Simas Jasaitis each scored 11.

Ferran Laviña put Joventut ahead to start the game on a fine cut to the basket. Bracey Wright and Hernandez-Sonseca added baskets to open a 6-0 lead. Jacobsen drained a three-pointer from the left wing to get Alba on the board only to have Bracey Wright rush back for a driving layup to make it 8-3. Joventut continued its fine interior passing as Hernandez-Sonseca fed Laviña for a 10-3 lead. Ansu Sesay hit Alba's second long ball before Jacobsen picked up a steal and fed McElroy for a break-away layup. McElroy made 2 foul shots to even the game at 10-10. Bracey Wright went the other way and drained a three-point shot only to be matched by Jacobsen, who would hit again from long range for a 13-16 Alba advantage. As Joventut intensified its defensive pressure. Jasaitis knocked down a three-point shot and, following a steal, Pau Ribas hit a long ball of his own. The second of two Jenkins turnovers ended with Ricky Rubio making a great assist to Jerome Moiso in the lane to complete a 10-0 run that gave Joventut a 23-16 lead after one quarter.

Bracey Wright - DKV JoventutAdam Chubb opened the second quarter scoring for the guests, after which Jenkins fed McElroy on the break and Nadjfeji got inside for a dunk to make it 23-22. Hernandez-Sonseca tipped in Jagla's miss and made 2 foul shots for a 27-22 lead that stopped the Alba surge. Nadjfeji converted a nice pass from Jenkins, made the accompanying foul shot and then scored on the break to knot the game at 27-27. Jagla answered for Joventut by hitting a triple from the right wing. Bracey Wright hit a tough layup in the lane and Pere Tomas downed 2 free throws as Joventut still led 34-29. Rubio then stole a pass at mid-court and found Jagla for a long alley-oop layup before Tomas fed Bracey Wright Bracey Wright for a long layup as Joventut surged ahead 38-31, forcing an Alba time-out. Jenkins finally scored his first two points from the foul line and then McElroy got out on the break for a dunk to have Joventut call for a time-out ahead 40-35. Rashad Wright would then hit for Alba and the deficit was down to 41-37 at the break.

McElroy opened the second half with a triple. Sesay followed suit from long range before Steffen Hamann stole the ball from Rubio and coasted in for a break-away layup to make it 41-45. Jagla stopped the Alba 0-8 run with a crucial three-pointer. But Hamann answered with a long ball of his own to make it 44-48. Jagla scored back-to-back baskets, the second being a dunk on the break to even the game at 48-48. But McElroy quieted the Joventut crowd with a jumper from the right baseline. Laviña pushed Joventut back ahead with a three-pointer only to be matched by another triple from McElroy. Dragan Dojcin was fed inside by Jacobsen to make it 51-55 but Demond Mallet got into the long range shooting night with a triple. Nadjfeji, however, hit inside and then Jacobsen converted a three-point play after a driving layup to give Alba a 54-60 advantage. Jasaitis beat the buzzer for a long two-point jumper and then Moiso put back an offensive rebound to keep Joventut within 58-63 after three periods.

Casey Jacobsen - Alba Berlin celebratesNadjfeji's free throw opened the fourth quarter. Rubio hit a foul shot and then sent a nice pass to Hernandez-Sonseca who dunked to get the crowd into the game, with Joventut trailing 61-64. Rubio then fed inside to Moiso, who dunked with the left hand to bring Joventut within one point. Alba would not give up the lead as Jenkins attacked the rim and left the ball for Dojcin for an easy lay-in. But Hernandez-Sonseca drained a three-point shot and the game was even 66-66. Jenkins then got a lucky bounce on his short jumper in the lane and Rashad Wright hit a tough inside shot and Alba was back ahead 66-70. But Jagla came up with yet another big shot - a triple to make it 69-70. McElroy, however, was one better with yet another long ball from way outside and it was 69-73. After Jasaitis was fouled and made three free throws, McElroy continued his outstanding night with a layup, which was matched by a Jasaitis lay-in. Rashad Wright gave Alba a 74-77 lead with a jumper just inside the arc with less than a minute left. Jagla rebounded Rubio's missed three-pointer but stepped out of bounds. Joventut was trying to foul a Alba player but got lucky in having Sesay get called for travelling. Bracey Wright Wright was just short on his three-pointer from the left wing and Joventut sent Nadjfeji to the foul line with less than 10 seconds to play. Nadjfeji missed both shots and Alba fouled Jasaitis, who made the first with 5.5 seconds left but missed the second on purpose. Alba grabbed the rebound and avoided Joventut's attempts to foul and McElroy dunked home the winner just before the buzzer.

Head Coaches

ALONSO, SITO
DKV Joventut
"We were too anxious and our desire to play well to make the Top 16 weighed on us. We had problems with the big men on Alba, who are multi-talented and versatile. I congratulate Alba for playing a great game and has beaten us because they believed in themselves and played excellent defense. They made their shots at the important moments and with good percentages. I would highlight McElroy, who has been unstoppable today from any spot on the floor. We have to learn from these losses in order to keep improving. There's still a possibility of advancing, so we will go to Vitoria to win and see what else happens, although I see that it's quite difficult."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"I congratulate my team on an excellent triumph. We knew how much we were playing for in this game. We knew it would be a very tough game since both teams aspired to the same goal, the Top 16. We defended well and above all controlled the rhythm of the game and the scoreboard. We knew that we would have before us one of the best teams in the best league in Europe, and for that reason I am doubly satisfied with my players."

HERNANDEZ-SONSECA, EDU

"Alba has played a great game. This is one of those losses that hurt. We tried everything, but it wasn't to be. Now, we have to keep working and not lose the confidence we have in ourselves. They beat us with an excellent defense. I don't believe in miracles. It hasn't worked out the way we planned it, but we have fought until the end."
NADJFEJI, ALEKSANDAR
Alba Berlin
"It was a life-or-death game and we came out mentally ready from the start. Our shooting accuracy and our control in difficult moments have been key to winning today on a difficult court in front of a great team. We spent ourselves on defense and we never gave up in the game. Our belief in ourselves has made us win this important game. Now, we have to make sure by winning against Olimpija next week on our court."
