THE TAKE

Ulker Istanbul will have a tough task at hand when it tries to bounce out of a slump against red-hot CSKA Moscow on Wednesday in Turkey. Ulker (1-4) allowed Partizan Belgrade its first win of the season last week, while CSKA (3-2) handed Real Madrid its first defeat. The win was CSKA's third in a row after starting the season with back-to-back defeats. Against Madrid, David Vanterpool (9.2 ppg., 3.2 apg.) had his best game yet, 15 points, while David Andersen (14 ppg., 8 rpg.) scored 13, his 11th straight game with double-figure points. Ulker has not been involved in a close game all season. It's four defeats have come by an average of 14.3 points, while its lone victory was by a whopping 32. Last week Ulker led by 8 midway through the third quarter before Partizan went on a 27-3 march for victory. The only good news was the performance of shooter Ibrahim Kutluay (8.7 ppg.), whose 19 points were more than his total from his previous three games. frankateuroliga: The key to CSKA's success has been defense. In its three wins, opponents have averaged just 56.7 points – compared to 83 in defeats. Meanwhile Ulker (67.4 ppg.) has had trouble establishing an offensive hierarchy. Different players have led the team in scoring in each of the last three games, while no one has reached the 20-point mark all season. Shooting guard Jeff Trepagnier (12 ppg., 3.2 spg) had been the top option, but he has struggled the last two weeks and must be ready for CSKA's swarming backcourt. Ulker also ranks last in the league in assists (7.4) and is among the bottom four in rebounding (27.6 rpg.), despite the presence of rebounding co-leader Mirsad Turkcan (11.4 ppg, 10.8 rpg.). Both teams possess quality inside players, which promises some solid basketball in the paint. Turkcan will be joined by Marcus Haislip (10 ppg.) and reserve Dragan Pasalic to battle Andersen, Matjaz Smodis (8 ppg.) and Aleksey Savrasenko. Ulker may be at a disadvantage at point guard, where CSKA boasts more depth, with J.R. Holden (12.2 ppg) and Theodoros Papaloukas (7.2 ppg, 3.6 apg), while Ulker's Vrbica Stefanov (10.2 ppg.) has come off the bench lately after a slow start to the season.

CSKA Moscow maintained its strong rise in Group C standings by winning its fourth straight game in dominant fashion on the road, 49-82 against Ulker in Istanbul on Wednesday. CSKA is now 4-2 and sure of at least a share of third place, while Ulker falls into a danger zone at 1-5 with its second home loss. A second-quarter surge in which it scored 14 unanswered points was all that CSKA needed to take charge for good, adding to its big leads the rest of the way. Matjaz Smodis led the winners with 18 points in 23 minutes, but the contributions for the winners spanned the whole lineup. David Andersen added 16 point, Trajan Langdon 12, David Vanterpool 10 rebouns and Theodoros Papaloukas 10 assists. Ulker got 11 points from Marcus Haislip and 10 from Mirsad Turkcan, who did all his scoring in the first half and also picked up 9 rebounds.

Sergei Panov got CSKA going with a three-pointer from the wing, to which Turkcan answered with a put-back for Ulker. Langdon kept CSKA's accuracy in order with a corner triple and Andersen added a layup that gave the guests a 2-8 margin. Turkcan and Marcus Haislip came to the rescue for Ulker with consecutive baskets, but a three-point play by a dominant Andersen kept the guests in charge. Omer Onan slashed for a tough layup but otherwise Ulker had troubles against CSKA's defense. Aleksey Savrasenko came off the bench and immediately scored in the paint and even when Turkcan nailed a jumper, Matjaz Smodis answered from downtown for a 10-16 CSKA lead. Turkcan kept scoring fluently, but he didn't get much help. Meanwhile, Savrasenko followed Holden's jumper with his second basket to give CSKA a 12-20 advantage after 10 minutes.

Vrbica Stefanov boosted Ulker with a corner triple and Ibrahim Kutluay copied him from downtown to make it a two-point game, 18-20, early in the second quarter. Papaloukas got CSKA back on track with a two-handed dunk off a steal, as the guests switched to zone defense. Turkcan beat it with a put-back basket, but a technical foul on him was called before CSKA broke open the game. Langdon and Andersen took over with 4 points apiece to force an Ulker timeout at 20-31. CSKA's zone defense was dominating now, while Andersen scored inside and Panov added a put-back basket to cap a 0-14 run that put the guests fully in charge, 20-37, after 18 minutes. Haislip came to the rescue with consecutive short jumpers for Ulker, but that didn't stop CSKA. Langdon silenced the crowd with a three before Papaloukas added a fastbreak layup and fed Holden for another, all good for a 24-44 CSKA margin at halftime.

Haislip and Andersen exchanged baskets early in the third quarter, as Ulker tried to power the offensive board. Free throws by Stefanov and Trepagnier brought Ulker within 29-46, but the scoring pace was slower after the break, allowing CSKA to keep its lead. Holden fed Langdon for an easy basket while Panov appeared again to get a put-back basket to boost CSKA's lead to 31-50 after 24 minutes. Kutluay came off a screen to nail a big jumper but the hosts needed much more than that. Vanterpool kept rebounding well at both ends and slashed for a layup which made it a 20-point game, 33-53. Smodis followed Holden's driving layup with a baseline jumper. Nothing changed until the end of this period, as Smodis nailed a triple and added an uncontested layup to give CSKA a 40-62 lead after 30 minutes.

The fourth quarter held little drama, especially after Smodis lit up with a pair of three-pointers in the first few minutes, raising the CSKA lead to 40-67. Despite a triple by Ibrahim Kutluay of Ulker, the visitors just kept adding to their advantage. Alexey Savrasenko, Theodoros Papaloukas, Nikita Kurbanov and Zakhar Pashutin all contributed points down the stretch. Only young Oguz Savas and Bekir Yarangume had anything left in them for Ulker, which went quietly to its third loss in a row in Group C.

Head Coaches

ATAMAN, ERGIN
Ulker
"We are still struggling to reach the physical level of our opponents and this is the main reason that we can't challenge the big teams. Tonight's performance is a good example of this handicap. CSKA Moscow is playing the best style of modern basketball. They showed what a team can do best in every aspect of the game. I have nothing to say but to congratulate CSKA Moscow and wish them good luck for future games."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We played the best game of the season tonight. All my players on the court did their best both in defense and offense. We knew that Ulker would try to force the game because this game was one of their last chances for a better place in the group. They are demoralized and weren't able to motivate the game after the first quarter. It's good to have a big win against Ulker in Istanbul. But we still have plenty of games which we should take care of."

Players

ERDEN, CUNEYT
Ulker
"This was a very critical game for us and we had the worst result that we could get. We were unable to cope with CSKA Moscow tonight. They really played an excellent game and we couldn't even challenge them. There's nothing much to say about that game. We played very bad for the whole 40 minutes and dropped our chances to a minimum."
SMODIS, MATJAZ
CSKA Moscow
"We were expecting a tough challenge tonight against Ulker but everything worked well for our side. We controlled the game starting from the beginning until the end. We had no serious threat from Ulker's side and relaxed, starting to play much better minute by minute. And after we caught the 20-point difference, we understood that we were winning the game. This is a good win for us but now we should focus for the next games."
