THE TAKE

Montepaschi Siena hosts CSKA Moscow in Italy on Wednesday night in yet another exciting Group C showdown. Montepaschi (3-4) will try to break its two-game losing streak, while CSKA (5-2) will look to keep its five-game run going and avenge its opening-night home loss. Back in November, Duane Woodward and Rimantas Kaukenas combined for 44 points as Montepaschi stung CSKA 69-74 in Moscow. Montepaschi must make due, however, without Woodward and center Benjamen Eze (3.5 ppg.), both of whom are down with injuries. It should be a special night for swingman David Vanterpool (9.5 ppg., 4.2 rpg., 2.5 spg.) and center David Andersen (13.1 ppg., 93.1%), who helped Montepaschi reach the Euroleague Final Four in 2004 and to win its only Italian League title that season. Vanterpool, however, is considered unlikely to play after late word of an injury problem. That could affect CSKA, because Vanterpool has been unstoppable lately at both ends of the court, and has allowed coach Ettore Messina to diversify by using J.R. Holden (11 ppg.) as a shooting guard. If Vanterpool cannot play, Holden and Theo Papaloukas will join forces again at the guard spots, while sharpshooter Trajan Langdon (9.8 ppg.) will look to reap the benefits from the perimeter. Siena has its own combo guards in Justin Hamilton (4.2 ppg.) and Andrea Pecile (7.3 ppg., 55.5% 3FG), as well as a solid shooters Kaukenas (14.4 ppg.). But the loss of in Woodward (13.5 ppg.) means that someone must help Montepaschi put up points against the Euroleague's top defense. CSKA allows only 63.3 points per game, less during its win streak. Luigi Datome (57.1% 3FG) could be the x-factor for Siena, while Mindaugas Zukauskas (4.3 ppg.) will provide defense and the occasional three for Montepaschi. Andersen is the star of the CSKA frontline, which also features veteran forward Sergei Panov (7.1 ppg., 46.1% 3FG), defensive center Aleksey Savrasenko (6.1 ppg., 66.6% FG) and sharp shooter Matjaz Smodis (9.3 ppg., 44.4% 3FG). Smodis and Panov will have to test their strengths against two similar players in Marcelo Nicola (6.1 ppg.) and Vladimer Boisa (6.2 ppg.). Meanwhile, Andersen and Savrasenko will face Roberto Chiacig (3.6 ppg.) and Shaun Stonerook (7.1 rpg.), whose contributions have been improving. Without Eze around to block shots nor Woodward to score, the other Montepaschi players will have to be on top of their games. CSKA has definitely found its rhythm since these teams met last, and unless it wants to slide any further in the standings, Montepaschi must do the same despite its injuries.

Even without its hottest players, CSKA Moscow remained one of the Euroleague's hottest teams at the end of 2005 as it downed host Montepaschi Siena 66-75 on the road in Group C on Wednesday. CSKA's winning streak reached six games and its record 6-2 despite an injury that kept all-purpose guard David Vanterpool from playing. CSKA shares second place in Group C with Unicaja. Montepaschi fell to 3-5 but retains hold of fifth place in the group standings. A former Montepaschi player, David Andersen, led CSKA with 20 points and 8 rebounds in 25 minutes. He was matched in scoring by Trajan Langdon, while Theo Papaloukas added 14 points and Matjaz Smodis 11. Montepaschi, playing without two of its top guys, Duane Woodward and Benjamin Eze, led by a point after three quarters, but saw CSKA scored the first 9 points of the final quarter to take control. Roberto Chiacig led the hosts with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Shaun Stonerook added 12 points, Justin Hamilton and Rimantas Kaukenas 10 each.

Both teams looked to their big men on offense in the early going. Chiacig scored off a pick-and-roll with Hamilton, which Andersen answered with 4 points in a row. Montepaschi switched gears as Stonerook and Luigi Datome rained shots from downtown, but CSKA stayed close by concentrating inside until Andersen tapped a ball in and Matjaz Smodis curled into the paint to put the guests ahead 8-9. Chiacig and Datome put Montepaschi back up, 12-9. CSKA answered by setting free Aleksey Savrasenko with a pair of pick-and-rolls baskets assisted by Holden and Papaloukas, but Montepaschi stayed ahead 16-15 after 10 minutes.

Neither team was shooting well from downtown yet, and after the second quarter started quiet, they went back inside. Chiacig and Andersen dueled with baskets and free throws until CSKA's center went over 10 points himself with a basket that put the visitors up 21-23. A fastbreak layup by Papaloukas increased that, but Chiacig worked for a basket-plus-free throw in the post. Langdon matched that, however, to keep CSKA ahead before baskets by Stonerook and Kaukenas let Montepaschi take a lead back at 30-28. It didn't last, however, as Langdon struck for another basket-with-foul shot and then Smodis drilled CSKA's first triple. As Montepaschi struggled to score, Sergey Panov put in the last 4 points of the half to complete a 10-0 run that left CSKA in charge at 30-39.

After the break, Papaloukas scored 5 points to boost CSKA's edge to 12 points, 32-44, but the hosts reacted with a jump shot by Kaukenas. Montepaschi coach Carlo Recalcati then decided on full-court defensive pressure that turned the game around, blanking CSKA's scorers for 5 minutes, while paying off with steals that fueled a 9-0 run. Hamilton's triple and layup capped the surge with Montepaschi as close as 43-46. CSKA got back to scoring as Langdon put back rebound and caught fire to hit a pair of jump shots. But Montepaschi stayed close thanks to Mindaugas Zukauskas and Marco Nicola sharing 6 free throws. After Chiacig added a new basket to make it 51-52, Hamilton banked in a buzzer-beater to dramatically put Montepaschi in front, 54-53, after 30 minutes.

CSKA turned on its defense to take over in the fourth quarter, holding Montepaschi scoreless for 3 minutes as Andersen, Langdon and Smodis filled a 0-8 run that put the guests ahead 54-61. Montepaschi called a timeout and came back with the jumper by Kaukenas, but the duo Langdon-Andersen froze the home team's hope again with back-to-back baskets that made it 56-65. Chiacig tried to fight again, but Langdon signlled that CSKA would not be stopped when his triple made it 58-68. Just 4 minutes remained, and Montepaschi used 2 of them to come back within 63-68 on a dunk by Hamilton and a three-pointer by Stonerook. A scoreless minute passed, however, and when Smodis hit the next points on a layup, CSKA had the road win it was looking for.

Head Coaches

RECALCATI, CARLO
Montepaschi Siena
"We work hard and we were very concentrated until the later minutes of the second period. Unfortunately we spoiled all our great job in the later minutes of the first half when we allowed a nine-point lead to CSKA. I think it's not accidental we finally lost by exactly with the same disadvantage. We came back on the court with the right attitude, but in the end we suffered the deep effort we made. We played without Duane Woodward and Benjamin Eze, then we also had an injury with Andrea Pecile. So at the end of the game we had a short player rotation. It isn't an excuse, but we really had to face this difficult situation. We can't be satisfied by a home loss, but we have to analyze what we did good and carry these things to the next games."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"On the eve of this match we all knew it would be a very difficult game. They had great goals and they wanted to get over the home loss with Ulker Istanbul. It was just the last match before the holiday and we could also expect to be not so concentrated on the court. Otherwise we played with the right attitude and we defended well until we were ahead by 12. Then we made the mistake thinking we had the victory in our hands and so we allowed Siena to come back. In the later minutes, we did a good job controlling the game."

Players

CHIACIG, ROBERTO
Montepaschi Siena
"We want to grow up step by step after this game against CSKA. We played all together starting from our defense. Then we worked together all around the court. It was really a pity we missed many shots from the perimeter because they could have been very important for us."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
CSKA Moscow
"It's very difficult to win here for every team. I know we had a good game tonight and I think the key was our defense. I had a hard battle against Roberto Chiacig under the boards. I expected this kind of match. I'm satisfied about our performance even if we missed too many jump shots."
