THE TAKE

Artland Dragons desperately needs a victory to stay alive in the race for the Eurocup Final Eight as it hosts Lietuvos Rytas in Group L. Artland dropped to 0-3 after getting blasted 105-64 in Vilnius, Lithuania, in Week 3. Head coach Thorsten Leibenath's German side did little right against L. Rytas. The Dragons made just 45% from two-point range and just 6 of 21 (29%) three-pointers, while turning the ball over 21 times and getting outrebounded 46-21, including 13 L. Rytas offensive rebounds. Defensively, Artland watched L. Rytas shoot 69% from two-point range, while hitting 10 of 23 (43%) triples. Center Dirk Madrich scored 14 points and playmaker Drew Neitzel had 11 points and 3 assists while center Darren Fenn added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Not even the return of emotional leader forward Darius Hall could help Artland. But Leibenath's team will come into the game on a high note after finally winning domestically, snapping an 8-game losing streak in the German BBL. Still, Dragons will need to drastically improve its overall game to secure the win. Lietuvos Rytas meanwhile remained undefeated at home during the Eurocup with its fifth straight win to move to 2-1 in the group. But head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis's club is still searching for its first victory outside Lithuania. L. Rytas shot the lights out from the field and dominated Artland in the blocks. But Kurtinaitis cannot be happy about his men making just 21 of 34 (62%) free throws. The coach had to be thrilled with his point forward Chuck Eidson grabbing Week 3 MVP honors with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Five other players scored in double figures including forward Donatas Zavackas's 15 points on 5 three-pointers and reserve forward Milko Bjelica added 15 points and 7 rebounds. All 12 players scored at least 2 points and 11 grabbed at least one rebound. Kurtinaitis's most important message to his team will be that this game in Germany will not be anywhere near as comfortable.

Quotes Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Artland Dragons
"We have something to make up. But we also know that against this athletic opponent it won't be easy for us even at home. We have to put more concentration and intensity in our game. That is the only way we will have a chance against this strong team."

"It will be a good game, a revenge, because Vilnius blew us out by fourty points two weeks ago. We have to come out with a different focus from the last game. We need to rebound a lot better and be more patient on offense. The win from Saturday helped our confidence."
Marijonas Petravicius - Lietuvos RytasLietuvos Rytas got closer to reach the Eurocup Final Eight in difficult Group L by edging Artland Dragons 70-79 in Quakenbruck, Germany on Tuesday night. L. Petravicius got L. Rytas going with a layup while Eidson scored for a 2-4 lead. Artland struggled to score in the opening minutes while a put-back basket by Petravicius and a jumper by Mindaugas Lukauskis gave L. Rytas a 2-8 margin. Evaldas Dainys capped a 0-8 L. Blalock kept pacing Artland while a three-pointer by Hess got the hosts within 28-32. Darius Hall and an unstoppable Petravicius exchanged layups while Hess took over with a wild dunk-and-foul. Jomantas silenced the crowd with free throws but L. Rytas lacked ball circulation now. Meanwhile, a layup by Jan Rohdewald and a triple by McIntosh tied it at 38-38. More foul shots by Jomantas and Babrauskas fixed the halftime score at 38-41.

Darren Fenn - Artland DragonsPetravicius made free throws immediately after the break but consecutive layups by Fenn and Chad Prewitt got Artland as close as 44-45. L. Rytas kept attacking the basket and going to the foul line often. Lukauskis and Petravicius hit free throws but Prewitt answered from downtown for a 47-49 Artland deficit. Jomantas stepped up with a layup but Fenn improved it with a three-pointer. Eidson and Hess traded dunks and even when Babrauskas sank a three-pointer, McIntosh answered from downtown to keep the Dragons in the game, 55-56. It didn't last long, however, as Eidson joined the three-point shootout while Babrauskas insisted from beyond the arc to give L. Rytas a 55-62 after 30 minutes. Flavio Stuckemann scored off a steal early in the fourth quarter. L. Rytas kept powering the offensive board while Babrauskas sank his third three-pointer in as many minutes to keep his team way ahead, 57-65. McIntosh tried to change things with a jumper but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Jomantas followed free throws with a layup to make it a double-digit game, 59-69, with under 6 minutes to go. Hess nailed a three-pointer but Petravicius scored down low to keep L. Rytas out of trouble. Fenn made 4-for-4 free throws that Nietzel followed with more fouls to bring Artland back to life, 68-73. A put-back layup by Fenn capped a 0-8 run and got the hosts within 70-73. Eidson rescued L. Rytas with free throws while another triple by Babrauskas sealed the outcome, 70-78, already in the final minute, as Artland never recovered.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Artland Dragons
"Vilnius was the better team today and deserves the win. I agree that just some small things made the difference. But we fought very hard today, not like two weeks ago in Vilnius where we gave up too early. But in the last quarter we couldn’t rebound the ball anymore and made some unnecessary turnovers. There was again one player that made the difference: Chuck Eidson. He makes this team so much better. But I am pleased with our performance. We put the three-point-shots in and everyone contributed."
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Artland is a really good team and we were a little bit scared to play here in Germany against a German team. This team has good confidence and good three-point-shooters, so I am very happy that we won this game. It was just some small things we did a little bit better than the Dragons: A few more rebounds, less turnovers and more free throws made the difference."
