THE TAKE

Partizan has its proverbial back to the wall as it hosts DKV Joventut on Thursday in a must-win Group E home game for the Serbian champs at Pionir Arena in Belgrade. After starting the Top 16 stage with a pair of losses, Partizan (0-2) must beat Joventut to retain a realistic chance of qualifying for the Quarterfinal Playoffs. On the other hand, Joventut (1-1), after edging Olympiacos in a low-scoring thriller last week in Spain, can move into second place - and potentially a tie for first depending upon other results - with a victory in Belgrade. These teams know each other rather well after squaring off twice in Group B of the regular season, with Joventut winning both games. Andy Betts scored a season-high 16 and helped on defense as Partizan struggled from outside (18.7% 3FG) and the line (55.5% FT) in an 82-51 blowout home win by Joventut in November. Rudy Fernandez drilled 5 three-pointers on his way to a season-high 26 points in January as Joventut won 74-83 in Belgrade. Vonteego Cummings was the lone bright spot for Partizan that night with 21 points, 4 assists and 6 steals. Cummings (13.3 ppg., 3.4 apg.) will need to play a major role in Partizan's attempts to overcome Joventut this time. The key to the Joventut's strategy is the point guard tandem of veteran Elmer Bennett (7.6 ppg., 3.1 apg.) and teenage ace Ricky Rubio (3.3 apg., 3.5 spg.), who more often than not wear down opposing playmakers. The ability of Cummings to get past Joventut's first line of defense is crucial because Partizan's weapons of choice are in the paint, where the trio of Predrag Drobnjak (16.6 ppg., 6.9 rpg.), Kosta Perovic (10.8 ppg., 5.8 rpg., 1.3 bpg.) and Nikola Pekovic are among the most intimidating frontlines in the league. However, with Betts back in action alongside Charles Gaines (9.7 ppg., 6.7 rpg.) and Robert Archibald (9.1 ppg.), the visitors are also pretty solid upfront. Fernandez (16.4 ppg.), Joventut's top scorer, matches up with Partizan veteran Dusan Kecman (6.6 ppg, 4 rpg.) and the dangerous, but inconsistent, Uros Tripkovic (8.8 ppg.), who is 1-for-11 from downtown in his last two games. Partizan has now lost three in a row for the second time this season. But the first time that happened, the team bounced back with its biggest win this year - a 46-point trouncing of Union Olimpija. There's no doubt that the team will come out hungry again as it aims to keep the Quarterfinal Playoffs as a target as long as possible. But even if the young players are at their best, Cummings and Drobnjak will need to lead the way against Rubio and Gaines in two of the more important matchups in this game.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"The competition in groups in the Top 16 phase is practically a knock-out system. Each road win brings a huge advantage. I am sure Joventut will try to win in Belgrade to come closer to the Euroleague quarterfinals. The team from Badalona has showed in both the Euroleague and in the Spanish League its great talent and quality. On the other side, we are ready to show that our real big success in reaching the Top 16 is the result of our own quality. Partizan has its own ambitions. To beat Joventut in sold-out Pionir Arena; we are able to do that."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"It's clear that Partizan has a good team. Plus they have a great atmosphere at home which guarantees an instant boost for their team. On the other hand, we have played good games against them this season, both in Badalona and Balgrade. I think it will be hard for us to repeat that since we are not on our best moment of the season and a little insecure. We'll have to see if we have the option to remain concentrated and well, but any way, taking a win will be tough."

"Joventut is team full of talent. I like to see Rudy Fernandez or Ricky Rubo playing, but I hope they will see us playing well in Belgrade on Thursday. We faced Joventut twice this season. It is a team that plays extremely aggressive on defense and very fast on offense. If we managed to limit those two key Joventut weapons, we have chances to book our first Top 16 win. Of course, we have to play at our best possible level, helped by our great fans."
BENNETT, ELMER
DKV Joventut
"The two games we had this season against Partizan do not mean much now because both teams are in a different situation. We have to know where we stand to play calm and focused against them. I don't know whether the negative streak of two losses in the Spanish League can affect us, but we know we can do well. We have to work harder than ever and give our best to win."
Predrag Drobnjak - Partizan Strong defense and good shooting allowed Partizan to take its first Top 16 win on Thursday, by dumping DKV Joventut at Pionir Arena in Belgrade, Serbia, 85-70. The inside play of Partizan, together with 27-of-43 two-point shooting, allowed the Serbian champs to roll to a 1-2 record in Group E, joining Joventut and Olympiacos at 1-2 at the midway point. Predrag Drobnjak led the winners with 16 points, Vonteego Cummings added 15, and Uros Tripkovic and Kosta Perovic nailed 13 each for Partizan. Drobnjak and Perovic each had 10 rebounds. For Joventut, Elmer Bennett and Rudy Fernandez had 16 points apiece and Charles Gaines added 12. Fernandez and Gaines also had 4 steals apiece.

Perovic opened the scoring for Partizan as the hosts' defense held Joventut scoreless. Both defenses worked hard until Fernandez hit a three-pointer after 3-and-a-half minutes to make it 4-3 for Partizan. However Cummings did the same and Dusan Kecman finished a fastbreak after a steal for a 9-3 advantage. Joventut's first timeout didn't work right away as Milenko Tepic's three-point play made it an 8-0 burst for the hosts. Free throws by Bennett kept Joventut alive, but Partizan owned the tempo and the lead, 16-6. Robert Archibald and Drobnjak traded dunks, but when Gaines scored his own three-point play, the score was 18-11. A basket by Ricky Rubio followed by Ferran Laviña's three allowed Joventut to pull within 20-16, forcing a Partizan timeout. Free throws by Drobnjak ended to the first quarter with his team ahead 23-17.

Rudy Fernandez - DKV JoventutLaviña opened fire first in the second quarter, but Novica Velickovic matched him to maintain Partizan's edge. Joventut's big men had problems on offense and Luka Bogdanovic hit two more free throws for the hosts. Archibald found the way to the basket with a turnaround layup, but Nikola Pekovic matched him to the fans' delight. The lead reached the double digits when Perovic and Tripkovic scored to make it 33-21. Bennett blasted back-to-back threes to get Joventut going again and a basket by Laviña made it 38-30. Tripkovic was became the protagonist for Partizan on offense and Drobnjak added a reverse dunk to restore a 42-33 lead for the hosts at halftime.

Kecman kept Partizan going at the start of the second half, but the inside connection of Gaines and Dmitri Flis started to work on both ends and Rubio managed to add a free throw. However Drobnjak was still on fire to keep Partizan at a safe distance, 47-38. Fernandez stepped up with 5 consecutive points of his own – including a triple – to trim it to 47-43, and Marcelinho Huertas added a move to make it a 2-point game for a 0-7 run in one minute. Tepic broke the spell with a layup, but Huertas appeared again to match him. Now both teams ran looking for fast, easy baskets and the hosts found them with 5 points from Drobnjak for a 54-47 lead. Partizan also pressed on defense as Joventut looked lost on the court. The run reached 9-0 when Rudy fed Andy Betts underneath for 58-49. An unsportsmanlike foul on Rubio was not used by Partizan to pull away and Rudy soon fed Gaines for a dunk to seal the third period 61-53.

Milenko Tepic - PartizanAfter a scoreless minute, Rudy drained a bomb from downtown to cut the gap to 61-56, but Cummings copied him soon to restore things. A Gaines steal and dunk put Joventut a little closer and then Bennett fed him for a one-handed jam that made it 64-61. Perovic fought hard for an offensive rebound and bucket on the third chance, but Archibald fed Gaines for his third straight dunk. The hosts were now finding easy options in offense as two straight baskets by Perovic made it 72-63 midway through the final period. Drobnjak was called a technical foul and Bennett sank both free throws, but after that, Partizan played to control the ball and let the clock tick away with a 73-65 lead and two minutes to go. Tripkovic's triple poured more salt on the wounds for Joventut, but Rudy grabbed his own offensive rebound for another three that made it 80-70. A technical foul on Gaines allowed Partizan to finally break the game open and cruise to the final 85-70 thanks to Bogdanovic's free throws.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"I am very satisfied with our play. We faced Joventut twice in Euroleague this season and they won both games. The victory in Belgrade this evening meant a lot to them and that was the reason Joventut played under pressure. In the first half we played extremely well with a lot of fastbreaks. In the second we had some empty minutes but Joventut had them, too. Beating by 15 points one of the best teams in Spain is a big thing to us. The game was truly spectacular showing that basketball in Belgrade remains an adrenaline performance."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"In the last several weeks we've had lot of ups and downs, bad and good games. Tonight we were not at our level. We missed to stop Kosta Perovic and Predrag Drobnjak who outrebounded our centers."

Players

PEROVIC, KOSTA
Partizan
"Some recent games in the Euroleague we started bad and we were running to be back into the game but tonight things were different. We opened the game extremely well and we were keeping that starting credit until the end. The key was our concentration and big heart. If we beat Olympiacos in Athens we could have chances to play in quaterfinals."
LAVIÑA, FERRAN
DKV Joventut
"We knew Partizan is playing strong at home. They were too strong for us tonight. It was big pressure in the gym. We tried different types of defense but nothing worked."
