THE TAKE

Knowing that a win might or might not help send the club in the Quarterfinal Playoffs for the first time, Partizan hosts Euroleague defending champion CSKA Moscow to close the Top 16 on Thursday at Pionir Arena in Belgrade. Partizan could also advance without winning, but in both cases remains at the mercy of Group E's other game that night, which pits Olympiacos Piraeus against DKV Joventut. If Olympiacos (2-3) beats Joventut (1-4), Partizan will be eliminated regardless of what happens in Belgrade. If both Partizan (2-3) and Joventut win, the Serbian champs make the playoffs, as long as Joventut does not win by an unlikely 35 or more points. Also, if Partizan loses and Joventut wins by 34 points or fewer, Partizan would qualify for the playoffs. CSKA (5-0) has already secured first place in the group and will face Maccabi Elite in the best-of-three quarterfinals. The Russian champs are riding a 16-game Euroleague winning streak and have the chance to join a short list of teams - just two going into this week - that have gone undefeated in the Top 16 this decade. CSKA manhandled Partizan 67-44 in their first Top 16 meeting by holding the Serbs to just 17 second-half points. Partizan has regrouped since then, winning two of its last three games as center Kosta Perovic (11.2 ppg., 6.2 rpg., 1.2 bpg.) has started to dominate, averaging 13.7 points, 9 rebounds and 7.3 fouls drawn per game in that span. Perovic teams with Predrag Drobnjak (16.1 ppg., 6.7 rpg.) and Nikola Pekovic to form a mighty frontline, but CSKA has a powerful group in the paint as well, including power forward Matjaz Smodis (14.4 ppg.), David Andersen (.6 ppg.), Aleksey Savrasenko (7.3 ppg.) and Thomas Van den Spiegel. CSKA's prime scoring options are on the perimeter, where star sixth man Theo Papaloukas (9.6 ppg., 5.3 apg.) creates for J.R. Holden (10.4 ppg.) and Trajan Langdon (13.1 ppg.), who had a big night in last week's win over Olympiacos. Point guard Vonteego Cummings (13.3 ppg., 3.3 apg.) and shooter Uros Tripkovic (10.1 ppg.) could hold the keys for Partizan. The former's ability to control the pace and keep the momentum in Partizan's favor is crucial, while the latter could make a difference if he can duplicate his career-high 26-point effort from last week, which included 6-for-8 shooting from downtown. Another big piece in the Partizan puzzle is guard Dusan Kecman, who'll need to play big on the defensive end. An exciting atmosphere will surely play a factor at Pionior Arena, where Partizan's devoted fans will try to boost their team to new heights.

Quotes Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"Disregarding the final result of this last game in our Top 16 group, I can say that we have already had remarkable success. We attained our goal and we are in the comfortable position of playing completely pressure-free against the Euroleague champ. But there are no untouchable teams in the Euroleague. CSKA is one of the most serious favorites for this season's Euroleague title, together with Panathinaikos. I said I am satisfied what we did in the competition so far, but that satisfaction is no excuse to lose the game on Thursday. We are going to try to beat this great team from Moscow together with our true fans, playing without any pressure but highly motivated."
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
"We already qualified to the playoffs of the Euroleague, but this does not mean we will not play serious. Every game is important for CSKA and we should play focused the same as in any other game of the Euroleague. We should respect the rival, the coaches and the people who will come to the game."

TRIPKOVIC, UROS
Partizan
"Neither Partizan nor CSKA depends on the final result of this game in Belgrade. And that is where I see the opportunity for a real basketball party. We shall try to beat one more really big team. I cannot promise that we will defeat the Euroleague champion, but I can promise that we shall play with heart like we always do. My teammates and I have the hope that Joventut is capable of beating Olympiacos, and thereby letting us continue in this Euroleague competition."
PASHUTIN, ZAKHAR
CSKA Moscow
"The crowd in Pionir Arena offer us the best possible motivation. Of course, they will support Partizan, but our goal is to show them what CSKA is about. I think the game will be difficult, as is any game against a Serbian team, especially the champion of the country. We need to maintain our concentration."

David Andersen - CSKA Moscow CSKA Moscow ended the Top 16 with yet another defensive exhibition by downing Partizan 55-86 in Belgrade, Serbia to finish Group E unbeaten on Thursday night. CSKA finished Group G with a perfect 6-0 record and will face Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv in the best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs. Meanwhile, Partizan dropped to 1-5 and lost the chance to advance to the playoff, as it needed to win and see Olympiacos beat Joventut in Greece to finish second in this group. Trajan Langdon and David Andersen led the winners each with 13 points. Oscar Torres added 11 while J.R. Holden and Aleksey Savrasenko each had 10 for CSKA, that got its 16th consecutive Euroleague win and became one of four teams to ever finish the Top 16 unbeaten. Nobody scored in double digits for Partizan, even when Uros Trpkovic, Dusan Kecman and Predrag Drobnjak each had 9 points. CSKA dominated the game since the early going, as Holden and Langdon led CSKA to a 10-23 margin after 10 minutes. Torres and Andersen took over to boost CSKA's lead to 20-41 at halftime and the guests kept a safe margin all the way.

Matjaz Smodis got CSKA going with a jump hook while a technical foul on Partizan coach Dusko Vujosevic allowed Langdon to follow free throws with a layup for a 0-6 lead. Tripkovic stepped up with a driving layup that Torres erased with a floating jumper. Tripkovic and Savrasenko traded baskets, but Partizan had been limited to just 4 points in as many minutes and opted to call timeout to fix its offense. Langdon took over with one from downtown, as Partizan went scoreless for 3 minutes until Vonteego Cummings hit a free throw. J.R. Holden nailed a jumper but Kecman matched it for a 7-15 Partizan deficit. Holden fed Savrasenko for an easy basket and then buried another shot in a 0-8 run than he capped with another basket, good for a 7-23 CSKA margin. Drobnjak fired in one from downtown to get Partizan within 10-23 after 10 minutes.

Dusan Kecman - Partizan CSKA kept dominating its game with outstanding defense, while Anton Pnkrashov nailed a wild jumper that Nikola Pekovic erased with a layup. CSKA found a new go-to guy in Andersen, who stepped up with 7 unanswered points on free throws and a layup-plus-foul to give his team a mamooth 12-32 lead. Partizan kept struggling to score, not even finding good shots, but Drobnjak got his team going with free throws. Torres answered from downtown and than provided a highlight with an outstanding one-handed alleyoop dunk. Torres soon added free throws to make it a 25-point game, 14-39. Kecman and Thomas Van den Spiegel traded layups while Kosta Perovic found his first points on free throws. More foul shots by Cummings got Partizan within 20-41 at halftime. CSKA limited Partizan to just 5-of-18 two-pointers and 1-of-9 triples in the first half.

Nothing changed after the break, as Partizan could not find the way to the basket. Meanwhile, Holden buried a long two-pointer and Savrasenko banked in a hook shot for a 25-point CSKA lead, 20-45. Luka Bogdanovic tried to wake Partizan up with a triple but Langdon answered from downtown to silence the crowd. Tripkovic stepped up with a layup while Cummings nailed a jumper to get Partizan within 27-50. Perovic dunked it but Langdon buried a three-pointer and Van den Spiegel added a layup to make Partizan call timeout at 29-55. Bogdanovic scored again but Theo Papaloukas answered with free throws. Cummings fired in a jumper and Novica Velickovic added a close basket for a 35-57 Partizan deficit. Andersen and Zakhar Pashutin made free throws but Bogdanovic brought the hosts within 38-60. Pashutin dunked it off a steal to seal the outcome, 38-62, at the end of the third quarter.

Trajan Langdon - CSKA Moscow All Partizan fans didn't keep an eye in the Olympiacos - Joventut game anymore, as there was no way that CSKA could lose its advantage. Meanwhile, CSKA kept rolling in both ends. Papaloukas fed Van Den Spiegel for an easy basket that made the hosts call timeout at 38-64. Andersen buried a turnaround jumper while Papaloukas stepped up with a driving layup while Pashutin and Andersen buried three-pointers in a 0-10 CSKA run that made it a 36-point game, 40-76, with 4 minutes to go. Everything was said and done, as CSKA will carry on fighting to defend the Euroleague title. Meanwhile, Partizan put a bitter end to a fantastic Euroleague season in which the team made the Top 16 for the first time in club history.

Head Coaches

VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
“There is a difference between us and CSKA. The team from Moscow showed its class on the court. All 40 minutes they played focused. I think they improved their athletic abilities with the arrival of Oscar Tores. We played bad tonight. CSKA is a champion because they are playing each game at the highest level.”
MESSINA, ETTORE
CSKA Moscow
“I think we played pretty good. We opened the game in a big way. The young players in Partizan's team were confused and they lost confidence after 15 minutes. Also they were under pressure. This game was an excellent overture before hard games that are in front us and Partizan too. We played at our best in a sold-out gym to show how the Euroleague champ is playing.”

Players

PEROVIC, KOSTA
Partizan
“We always are having problems with the Euroleague champion. Last time they beat us by 36 points difference. I do not know what is the reason for that. Maybe their great defense or our bad shooting. Maybe both. Anyway we made a real success by reaching the Top 16.”
SMODIS, MATJAZ
CSKA Moscow
“We did not do anything to lose in that game. Partizan played under big pressure. I think Maccabi is a very dangerous opponent for us in the quarterfinals. We have to play serious and clever with them.”
