THE TAKE

Benetton Bwin and Panellinios BC square off Tuesday night at the Palaverde in Treviso in a Group L matchup with plenty at stake. Survival is the key word for Panellinios (0-3), who is still winless in the Last 16 stage and needs a victory to avoid early elimination from quarterfinals contention. It will have to defeat Benetton Bwin (2-1) to stay alive, and head coach Jasmin Repesa’s team did not prove itself an easy opponent in their previous matchup: Benetton’s 75-83 Week 3 victory in Athens has Panellinios standing in its current predicament. Still, there is room for hope for the visitors: talented center Torin Francis went on a perfect shooting night, hitting all 11 of his two-point field goals for 29 points to go with 10 rebounds and forward Steven Smith was solid in backup with 16 points. Panellinios’s one-two punch was bested by a solid all-around effort from Benetton’s roster, where guard Devin Smith stood out with 22 points and 5 triples. Three-point shooting is a Benetton strength that will go straight up against Panellinios’s rebounding prowess and good free-throw percentage. But the main reason for concern for Benetton is Francis, the Last 16 performance index rating leader and second-best rebounder. The task of locking him up will surely fall to Donatas Motiejunas, with occasional help form Jakub Wojciechowski and newcomer Brian Skinner, a heady player that could help tilt the battle towards the home side with his know-how. In the backcourt, Massimo Bulleri, Stefan Markovic and marksman Ryan Toolson will combine to try and hold Maurice Bailey, Joseph Krabbenhoft and Manolis Papmakarios to below-average numbers, while newcomer Vlado Scepanovic will fill the void of departed Samo Udrih in the visiting roster. Slavko Evangelos and Greg Brunner will fight it out at the forward spot. With the group’s second-placed team facing the best player of the Last 16 stage, the intrigue is set as to who will come out on top.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"We has a week to rest regarding games, but we managed to do good practices and the team has worked well in order to reach the important part of the season in good condition. We have a Eurocup game against Panellinios which we must win at all costs. Our goal is to play the Eurocup Finals here at home, so we must keep collecting wins in the Eurocup. I hope the Palaverde will be packed to support us to get one new win. We won the first time, but we suffered. It will not be different at home."
SKOURTOPOULOS, ATHANASIOS
Panellinios BC
"We go back as far as the qualification to the next round of the Eurocup. While we played good previous three games, we could not get a single victory. We still need to find better pace in the games with the rotations."

Players

KRABBENHOFT, JOSEPH
Panellinios BC
"We know that we have virtually no hopes of qualifying but we're not going to lose in Italy. Everyone in the team wants to win. If Benetton Bwin wants to win for a better position in the group, they will have to prove that they deserve it by beating us first."
Devin Smith - Benetton Bwin (photo benettonbasket.it)Benetton Bwin got closer to reach the Eurocup Quarterfinals in Group L by topping Panellinios 82-72 in Treviso, Italy on Tuesday. Benetton improved to 3-1 and will reach the next round along with already qualified Cajasol Sevilla (4-0) if it beats Alba (1-3) in Berlin next week. Panellinios dropped to 0-4 and ran out of chances to make it to the Quarterfinals. Devin Smith paced the winners with 24 points against his former team. Alessandro Gentile added 12 while Donatas Motiejunas and Stefan Markovic each had 11 for Benetton. Maurice Bailey led Benetton with 16 points. Vangelis Sklavos and Djuro Ostojic each added 13 while Steven Smith had 10 for the guests, that trailed 40-34 at halftime but used an 0-8 run to get a 58-60 edge late in the fourth quarter. Free throws by Bailey gave Panellinios its last lead, 66-67, as Smith, Motiejunas and Gentile shined in crunch time to make Benetton seal a very important home win.

Smith got Benetton going with a jumper and soon added a three-pointer in an 11-0 opening run that Gentile capped with an easy basket off a Panellinios timeout. Manolis Papamakarios tried to change things with a triple and Torin Francis added a jumper but Smith and Ryan Toolson made Benetton restore a 15-5 lead. Papamakarios insisted from downtown and Sklavos split free throws but a put-back layup by Brian Skinner gave the hosts a 17-9 edge after 10 minutes. Sklavos struck twice from downtown in an 0-8 run that allowed Panellinios to tie the game, 17-17, early in the second quarter. Skinner stepped up with a dunk that Bailey bettered with a triple to complete the guests' comeback, 19-20. Smith hit free throws and a three-point play bt Markovic restored a 24-22 Benetton edge. Dimitrios Kompodietas nailed a three-pointer and Sklavos bettered Smith's put-back layup with free throws for a 26-28 score. Gentile and Brunner tried to change things with free throws but back-to-back jumpers by Bailey and Ostojic kept Panellinios ahead, 29-32. Gentile kept pacing Benetton with a layup and Toolson struck from downtown but a jumper by Bailey tied it at 34-34. A layup-plus-foul by Brunner and a triple by Markovic fixed the halftime score at 40-34.

Smith found his first points right after the break and Francis matched Motiejunas' free throws with a layup that made it a four-point game, 42-38. Bailey sank another jumper while Smith followed a layup with a dunk to tie the game again, 44-44. Benetton improved its defense while Toolson and Markovic soon gave their team a 49-46 edge. A red hot Smith scored again and even when Markovic struck from downtown, free throws by Bailey kept Panellinios within 52-50. Motiejunas stepped up with a three-point play and Toolson added a triple but Smith and Bailey brought the guests as close as 58-54 after 30 minutes. Free throws by Kompodietas and Ostojic added back-to-back baskets for a 58-60 Panellinios edge, after an 0-8 run. Smith nailed a jumper and matched Sklavos' triple with his own shot from downtown to tie the game again, 63-63, midway through the fourth quarter. Ostojic and Bailey made foul shots but another three-pointer by Smith and a layup by Brunner restored a 68-67 Benetton edge. Smith scored again and a dunk by Gentile gave the hosts some fresh air, 72-67. Ostojic rescued Panellinios with a three-point play but back-to-back baskets by Smith and Motiejunas gave Benetton a 76-71 edge with over a minute left. Motiejunas and Gentile allowed Benetton to seal the outcome down the stretch.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"I’m proud of our approach to the game. All game we believed that we could win. Tonight we defended well and despite a misunderstanding in defense, in the second quarter we limited a team that came here without pressure. One of the positive things is that during these nine days of training, despite injuries to Bulleri and Peric, we improved in our game. I have sad many times that our goal is to play the Eurocup Finals here at home, so we must keep collecting wins in the Eurocup and for this reason the upcoming games against Alba Berlin and Cajasol Sevilla are decisive. I think we’re stronger with new solutions."
SKOURTOPOULOS, ATHANASIOS
Panellinios BC
"We needed to defeat Benetton Bwin to stay alive in the Eurocup, but tonight was very difficult. Benetton believed in victory and looked to go on in the competition. I saw very different situations in the game, in the last quarter we were not very lucky. In the last part of the gamem Benetton Bwin was hungrier. I searched for better pace with the rotations, with young guys that don’t have the experience for this competition. Now our priority is the Greek League."
