THE TAKE

A direct fight atop the Group K standings takes place in Bamberg, Germany where Brose Baskets hosts Bizkaia Bilbao Basket on Tuesday at 20:00 CET. Bilbao leads the Group K standings with a 2-0 record and is the only undefeated team so far in this 2009-10 Eurocup season. Brose is undefeated at home and faces a pivotal game in its fight to make it to the Quarterfinals. Brose will have to be ready to stop power forward Marko Banic, an All-Eurocup first team selection last season. Banic leads a deep, versatile frontcort that also features three-point threat Damir Markota, blue-collar big man Axel Hervelle and defensive center Jerome Moiso, who is seeing extended playing time once coach Fotis Katsikaris stepped in. Moiso will be a key player in this game to stop center Elton Brown. Meanwhile, Banic faces an athletic yet unexperienced talent like Tibor Pleiss. Banic is set to use his post skills and experience against Pleiss, an outstanding shot blocker. Predrag Suput is a natural-born mismatch due to his versatility, deep range and leadership. Bilbao has a lot of options at both wings, even when do-it-all swingman Chris Warren and experienced forward Alex Mumbru will see most minutes at those spots. Janis Blums offers intensity and instant offense off the bench while Ronnie Seibutis can provide deep range and versatility. Mumbru is ready for a critical matchup against veteran shooter Casey Jacobsen. Meanwhile, Warren may have an advantage against Robert Garrett and Beckham Wyrick. Brian Roberts may be the X-factor for Brose due to his speed, quick first step and deep range. Both teams are really deep at point guard. Brose usually plays with John Goldsberry and Anton Gavel together on court to improve its ball circulatuion and find open shots for Roberts and Jacobsen. Bilbao can use Javi Rodriguez to play more up-tempo for look for clutch and leadership with Javi Salgado on the floor. Brose must lock the defensive boards and look for open shots for its many shooters. Bilbao has an advantage in the paint with Banic and Hervelle, so it must make the most out of it. Expect a physical game in Bamberg this Tuesday.

Quotes Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"Bilbao is a very deep team, especially at the major positions. The players have great European experience. The team knows what they must do in order to be successful internationally. We must defend their center on the pick-and-roll, and earn ourselves good shots on the offensive end with good ball movement, and then shoot with greater confidence."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"Brose Basket is a very solid team in the defensive end. It is an intense, aggressive, tough team that gets even stronger at home due to its noisy fan base that always sells out its arena. Their main weapon is their backcourt players likes Roberts, Gavel or Jacobsen, even when their best player right now is Predrag Suput, who is playing power forward this season. He is a talented player, with deep range and able to play one-on-one. Brown is also a physical player at center. The biggest key will be playing with the same intensity and toughness that they will put on the court."

Players

Javi Salgado . Bizkaia Bilbao BasketA week after the Eurocup Finals were ticketed for nearby Vitoria, Spain, the juggernaut that is Bilbao Bizkaia Basket continued on its perfect-to-date season by thrashing Brose Baskets 55-76 on the road in Bamberg, Germany on Tuesday. Bilbao is now 3-0 in Group K, just as it was a perfect 6-0 in the regular season. Bamberg, meanwhile, dropped to 1-2. Although the hosts led by as many as 9 points early, a 6-24 run that started late in the first quarter turned the game in Bilbao's favor for good. Marco Banic again proved unstoppable in the paint, making 7 of 9 two-pointers on the way to 18 points. Chris Warren follwed him with 14 points for the winners, while Javi Salgado scored all of his 12 in a burst just before and after halftime and dished 7 assists. Defense and a 28-38 rebounding advantage did the rest for Bilbao. Bamberg got 22 points and 10 rebounds from Elton Brown, but little else besides 12 points from Casey Jacobsen, most of those in the game's first 2 minutes.

Jacobsen's 8 points to open the game - free throws followed by consecutive three-point shots - gave Bamberg all the confidence it needed. Alex Mumbru started Bilbao's response from downtown before Javi Rodriguez tied at 8-8 on a layup. The hosts merely turned to another veteran, Predrag Suput, for 7 points to start a 9-0 run to a 17-8 lead. The shootout continued till the end of the first quarter, when consecutive triples by Chris Warren let Bilbao cut the difference to 21-16 after 10 minutes. This time, however, Bilbao continued its run with a humongous 2-15 start to the second quarter. The visitors found Banic inside for 8 of those points, while Warren added 4 more and Janis Blums capped the blast with a three-point strike at 23-32. Brian Roberts stopped the bleeding for Bamberg and Tibor Pleiss got the hosts as close as 27-32 before Bilbao guard Salgado buried a triple and free throws for the game's first double-digit lead, 27-37, at halftime.

Scoring stalled at the start of the third quarter until Salgado personally upped the Bilbao advantage to 27-41. He returned a minute later for a big three-pointer, giving him 12 points in less than 6 minutes and his team a 29-46 advantage. Bilbao was content to trade Alex Hervelle's inside baskets for those of Brown for Bamberg. Another slow spell interrupted by a triple and free throw from Jacobsen could only get the hosts within 37-52 at the end of three quarters. Bilbao broke the hosts for good with 8 unanswered points to open the final quarter, with a three-point bomb by Paco Vazquez helping to push the difference above 20 points at 27-60. Bamberg worked hard at trimming the point difference with back-to-back three-point plays by Brown at 47-62. Jerome Moiso matched one of them, however, and Bilbao was going home not only with another win, but with a healthy margin of victory - just in case.

Head Coaches

FLEMING, CHRIS
Brose Baskets
"We started well, controlling the game in offense and in defense. But at the beginning of the second quarter, we had big problems, had no concentration. We had good chances, but did not score, so it was over. Altogether we can’t afford those phases like in the second quarter. "
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Bizkaia Bilbao B
"We are very happy for tonight's win. We have had good continuation over the last games. In the beginning tonight, we had some problems, but we have the luxury to have great players from the bench. So we could gain control, change the game and finally we won."

Players

JACOBSEN, CASEY
Brose Baskets
"We got off to a good start in the first quarter. The key to the game was Bilbao’s ability to come strong into the second quarter. They did a really good job passing the basketball. They got good shots and that helped them to get into a rhythm. They are a good team, but we did not play as well as we can. This was a really important game for us, but it is over now. What we have to do now is win."
