THE TAKE

With its first full week of new-old head coach Pini Gershon back on the sidelines, Maccabi Electra will look for its first win in the newest Gershon era when it hosts Cibona Zagreb at Tel Aviv's Nokia Arena on Thursday night. Maccabi lost at home for the first time this season last week to Unicaja in Gershon’s debut and can ill-afford a second home loss as it tries to lock down a spot in the Top 16. Meanwhile Cibona is enjoying its best start to a season since 1999 with a 4-1 record and a share of the top spot in Group A. Head coach Velimir Perasovic's men started the season on the right foot with an 81-79 win over Maccabi in which Davor Kus and Rawle Marshall combined for 43 points and the club has not looked back since. The key to Cibona's success has been a well-balanced team. Kus, Marshall, Earl Calloway and Robert Troha lead the perimeter attack, which will have to handle Maccabi’s backcourt of Carlos Arroyo, Marcus Brown, Tal Burstein and Derrick Sharp. At forward, Perasovic turns to Vedran Vukusic and Marin Rozic with Nika Prkacin, Jared Homan and Luksa Andric the main factors in the paint. Maccabi will unleash Lior Eliyahu and Omri Casspi at forward and play D’Or Fischer, Yaniv Green and Esteban Batista inside, with newcomer Elton Brown also available for what would be his Euroleague debut. This game could prove to be a turning point for both teams. A win for Maccabi could give the team the confidence it needs under Gershon before heading out for a pair of crucial road games, but a loss would seriously jeopardize Maccabi’s Top 16 hopes. For Cibona, a second road win would make people take note as the club aims to win the group, but a loss could derail the momentum and see the club start to slip. The key for the visitors will be to keep pace on offense with the high-scoring Maccabi attack, something that has been a problem on the road so far this season. Cibona is averaging just 62.5 points in away games – a number that will not suffice in Tel Aviv. For Maccabi, it will be interesting to see which players begin to emerge with different roles under Gershon and how different the team could look in his second game. The hosts would be slim favorites, but anything could happen in this promising clash on Thursday.

GAME QUOTES

Maccabi Electra
  • Swingman Tal Burstein need just 3 more three-pointers to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • The best game in Derrick Sharp’s lengthy Euroleague career came against his Week 6 opponent, Cibona Zagreb. Sharp scored 19 points on near-perfect shooting and picked up a career-high 5 steals for a 29 index in a January 2007 game.
  • Pini Gershon coached against Cibona head coach Velimir Perasovic in the semifinals at the 2006 Euroleague Final Four in Prague. Gershon and Maccabi beat Perasovic and Tau 85-70 to advance to the final, where they lost to CSKA Moscow. Derrick Sharp, Tal Burstein, Yaniv Green and Omri Casspi are the only remaining Maccabi players that took part in that game.
  • The last time Maccabi lost two Euroleague home games in one week was 10 years ago. In the 1998-99 season, Maccabi started with home defeats to Panathinaikos and Efes Pilsen. Those losses later on led to change of coaches on the bench, and the new coach who took over was...Pini Gershon.
  • Maccabi, especially under Pini Gershon, has a jinx with Week 6 in the Euroleague. In the last 18 seasons, since the 1991-92 season, Maccabi won Game 6 only six times. None of them were with Gershon on the bench. With Olympiacos, Gershon in Week 6 twice in as many seasons.
  • Among Maccabi's Week 6 victories was one of the most spectacular buzzer beaters in European basketball history. Doron Jamchy drilled a shot at the buzzer from the opponent's free throw line to give Maccabi a 78-75 win. The opponent was no other than...Cibona Zagreb.
  • Guard Marcus Brown recorded career high in assists (9) against Cibona during the 2004-05 season when he still played for CSKA Moscow.
  • Center Yaniv Green registered his Euroleague high in total rebounds (9) against Cibona in January 2006.
  • Forward Lior Eliyahu wrote his career high in assists (5) against Cibona in January 2007.
Cibona
  • Guard Davor Kus is averaging 19.7 points on 8-for-18 three-point shooting at home and 4.5 points on 0-for-7 three-point shooting on the road so far this season.
  • Big man Luksa Andric recorded his only career Euroleague double-double with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against Maccabi in Tel Aviv last season. He also matched his career bests with 3 assists and 2 blocks that night.
  • Guard Branimir Longin reached his Euroleague high in steals (5) at Nokia Arena against Maccabi in March 2005.
  • Cibona has visited Tel Aviv 11 times, but has managed to win only once. It was in the 1992-93 season and went down in the history books as one of the worse home defeats ever for Maccabi, 89-110.
  • Forward Marin Rozic recorded his Euroleague high in assists (3) against Maccabi in January 2008.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"We try to improve with the tools we have, and create a style that will fit the players on our roster. It's not ideal to change players, but that's the situation. Cibona is a good team and like every night in the Euroleague we predict a difficult match, but at home, in front of our fans, we have to do whatever is possible to win. It's an important game anyhow, but because of the situation we're in, it's even more important. So far Cibona didn't score well on the road, but they have many tools. The return of Kus allowed Prkacin more space and Marshall is a great go-to guy. Maccabi needs to be at least between the top eight teams in Europe, and we need to do what it takes to be there."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We will be facing an incredible atmosphere and a team which will be really determined to win. They lost against Unicaja and that is the reason why they just have to win against us. I see Maccabi as one of the teams that has Final Four potential and really talented offensive players. Arroyo and Brown can make something from every possible and impossible situation - make a difficult shot, assist to the open player, take responsibility. Also, they have a new coach, Gershon, who will be another positive impulse for them. I am looking forward to the game."

FISCHER, D'OR
Maccabi Electra
"It's a big game for us because we must get this win to improve our spot in the standings. We lost our last home game to Unicaja so it really doesn't leave us a lot of options today. I think last week we didn't play as we should because Coach Gershon didn't have enough time with us yet. Now things are better, and I think he got the feel for the guys on the team. We added some new things, so we're ready to go out there and get that win. We have great fans and a great arena and this is our chance to get even with Cibona after we lost at their place."
MARSHALL, RAWLE
Cibona
"Arroyo is the player that gets things going for Maccabi. Calloway and Princ have done a good job in the first game stopping him and if they can do it again we can look forward to good things happening. Maccabi is a big team and it will not be easy for us because they are in a must-win situation. In this game, there is not so much burden on our backs so we can play our game and hope for the best."
Lior Eliyahu - Maccabi ElectraMaccabi Electra got the first win of a new Pini Gershon era and solidified its standing in Group A the hard way on Thursday, stopping Cibona's second-half rally to win 88-83 at home in Tel Aviv. Maccabi evened its record at 3-3 while dropping Cibona to 4-2 and out of its first-place tie with Olympiacos. After losing all of a 12-point second-half lead as Cibona made a 1-15 run to bridge the last two quarters, Maccabi used a stellar show by Lior Eliyahu to stave off the visitors. Eliyahu finished with 24 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists as he fueled Maccabi's big early leads and returned to back-to-back layups after Cibona had gone ahead 77-78 with under 4 minutes left. Tied at 81-81 in the final minute, Carlos Arroyo drove for Maccabi's last go-ahead basket. Marcus Brown followed Eliyahu in the scoring column with 19 points, while D'or Fischer added 18, Tal Burstein and Arroyo 12 each. Vedran Vukusic scored 18 for Cibona, Davor Kus and Niksa Prkacin 15 each, and Earl Calloway 12.

Kus blasted a triple on a second-chance possession for Cibona's first lead at 1-3. Eliyahu fed Fischer for a reverse-plus-free throw as Maccabi snatched the lead. Brown took over then with a long jumper and slashing layup while also drawing 3 fouls on Cibona and hitting free throws to make it 9-3. Cibona recovered with 4 points on a pair of runs to the basket by Vukusic, but couldn't make anything else work offensively as Arroyo's three-pointer supplied the game's first double-digit lead, 17-7. After a Cibona timeout, Rawle Marshall scored on a bank shot, what would be his only points of the night, but Eliyahu matched him at the rim. Vukusic cut the difference with a triple at 19-12, but then fouled Eliyahu while he was scoring a one-handed flip, good for a three-point play. Luksa Andric drove strong twice, hitting a free throw with the second basket to pull Cibona within 24-17. Arroyo's next triple and a nice finger-rolled layup preserved a 29-19 Maccabi lead after 10 minutes.

Davor Kus - CibonaEliyahu continued to pace the hosts in the second quarter with a trio of early baskets, the last of them a tip-in, before he stole and fed an alley-oop dunk pass to Fischer for Maccabi's biggest advantage yet, 37-23. A rolled-in triple by Callaway fed Cibona's comeback hopes, however. Even though Eliyahu looked unstoppable while assisting Casspi's backdoor layup and spinning to drop his own shot, Holman returned for Cibona to score inside and Vukusic answered from downtown at 39-31. After Rozic hit free throws at 41-33 and Arroyo went off with his third foul, Vukusic ended an exchange of turnovers by racing for a fastbreak at 41-35. Maccabi head coach Pini Gershon needed a timeout now, and went back to Eliyahu for a basket, but Robert Troha matched for Cibona. Eliyahu rocked the rim with a baseline dunk, but Vukusic had the last word of the half, beating the shot-clock buzzer with 2.4 seconds left to pull Cibona within 45-42 at the break.

Maccabi came out smoking from the lockers as Brown drove for a basket and fed Fischer for another as the hosts marched ahead 51-44. Eliyahu hit a pair of intentional foul shots to start a possession that Burstien ended with a triple from up top for a new double-digit lead, 56-44. Kus answered from downtown but Burstein got three more the hard way. Kus was fired up, however, and blasted another. When Jared Holman made free throws off an offensive rebound and Calloway went coast-to-coast, Cibona was back within 59-54. The points kept falling however, as Arroyo popped from short while Burstein and Eliyahu made fastbreak layups at 65-56. Brown soon nailed a long-distance jumper to make it 68-58, but Cibona sent Marin Rozic and Vukusic to the hoop to make it 68-62. Prkacin featherd in the next shot and then passed out to Calloway for a huge triple that silenced the Tel Aviv crowd with a 69-67 scoreboard after 30 minutes.

Cibona's rally continued as Prkacin, Troha and Rozic, with floating one-hander, all got to the basket for layups that let the visitors burst ahead 69-73 to start the final quarter. Cibona's zone had stymied Maccabi for minutes, but the visitors' 1-15 run ended when Arroyo found Fischer cutting for the basket-plus-free throw to make it 72-73. Maccabi pulled off a big defensive stop now and at the other end, Brown blasted a triple for a new lead, 75-74. Brown then stole an errant pass and went the other way for a spinning layup at 77-74. Cibona took a timeout and Prkacin went back inside to score. When Arroyo missed his second straight triple try, Prkacin hooked over Fisher for a new Cibona lead, 77-78, with under 4 minutes left. Eliyahu returned with a pretty layup to retake the lead, then added a similar one-hander to make it 81-78 as the next-to-last minute started. Cibona went right back to Prkacin, and not only did his hook fall this time, but he was fouled and dropped the free throw for an 81-81 tie. A big offensive rebound by Fischer gave Arroyo a second-chance drive for the go-head layup, and after Kus missed from deep, Eliyahu got the rebound and was fouled. His 1 of 2 made it 84-81 with 22 seconds left. Kus went to the line next, making his 2 of 2, whereupon Cibona fouled Brown, who buried his pair with 13.4 seconds left for an 86-83 Maccabi edge. Calloway tried to tie it for Cibona, but missed, letting Burstein ice the victory at the foul line.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Maccabi Electra
"I prefer teams to try and stop our rhythm than us trying to stop them. Today we should have scored 95-100 points, at least according to the first half. I want to play in all quarters like we did in the first one. We didn't expect an easy game. They have a good starting five, but we managed to get Nikola Prkacin out of the game in the first half with foul trouble. We tried to do the same with Davor Kus but it didn't work out. It was a critical game. I didn't say it before the game so nobody will have extra pressure. We should have won by more than 5 points."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Cibona
"We didn't play well in the first half, which allowed Maccabi to dominate in those minutes. We managed to stop their offense in the second half. Lior Eliyahu played great and gave us a lot of headaches. We made some bad mistakes in the last minutes, and we shouldn't have left Marcus Brown open. I hope Maccabi will win the next game, because that will benefit us as well."

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Electra
"Cibona played really well tonight. Teams play here at a high level but I am happy we managed to handle the pressure. We are playing our game again. We are a better team at home and it shouldn't have come down to the last seconds. I am happy I played well today. It was a very important win. I just went out to do my job, and didn't look at the stats at any point. I hope to do that in every game as long as we kept collecting wins."
PRKACIN, NIKOLA
Cibona
"We had a slow start and I lost focus with two quick fouls and then the technical. We came back from a double-digit margin twice, and it showed we have great character. It was a close game, and when the game is that close it can go either way. This time it went against us."
