THE TAKE

Either Hanzevast Capitals or CSU Asesoft will be able to say it still has relatively decent chances of reaching the ULEB Cup elimination round after the two face off in Group C. Coach Josep Claros's Hanzevast booked its first victory in the competition by winning at home against Spirou Charleroi. Point guard Alton Mason and center Kitwana Rhymer both scored in double figures off the bench to lead the charge while starting small forward Dwayne Archbold and shooting guard Rogier Jansen hit for 15 and 11 points, respectively. The game was won at the line for Claros's team, which hit 22-of-26 (85%) of its free throws while Charleroi made just 10-of-18 (56%). Claros's Dutch side shot just 46% from the field and watched Spirou shoot 55% from the floor. If Claros can get another balanced effort, Hanzevast could avenge its Week One loss in Romania and improve to 2-4 - with third and fourth places possibly being just one game off. Asesoft is in the same boat at 1-4, having lost its fourth straight game last week at Akasvayu. Coach Mladan Jojic's CSU scored just 9 points in the first quarter and trailed by 21 points after three quarters before finally making it a bit more respectable in the end. Asesoft held Girona to just 40% shooting but forced just 11 turnovers while committing 18 turnovers. Shooting guard Arvyadas Cepulis scored 22 points and center Rashard Griffith added 15 points and 10 rebounds. But that was not enough against Girona. It remains to be seen it it's enough against Hanzevast either.

CSU Asesoft got its second win of the season by defeating fellow team at the bottom of Group C, Hanzevast Capitals, on the road by 81-95 on TUesday night. It was a close call during three quarters until in the last period, the guests managed to reach a double-digit lead that was enough to survive until the final buzzer thanks to the late help by Arvydas Cepulis. The win lifts Asesoft to a 2-5, while the Capitals remain in the last place of the group with a 1-6 mark. Cepulis led the winners with 21 points, Demetrius Alexander added 14, Reggie Elliott 13, T. Gaidamavicius 12 and Rashard Griffith 11 for Asesoft. For the Hanzevast Capitals, Guido Grunheid posted 22 points (13 of them in the first quarter) and pulled 12 boards. Dwayne Archbold added 16, Alton Mason 15 and Rogier Jansen 13.

Reggie Elliott boosted CSU Asesoft to a 2-7 start but the Capitals reacted with an 8-0 run capped by Guido Grunheid's basket to be in control again, 10-7. Virgil Carutasu maintained the guests on the run but Grunheid closed the quarter again with his basket for his 13th point in the period for a 19-17 Capitals edge. With a 73% from the field commanded by Elliott, Asesoft kept on scoring but Grunheid was unstoppable and was the main contributor also in the second quarter. Rashard Griffith added quality and points from the paint for Asesoft and Rogier Jansen's triple made it 33-30 for the Capitals as neither team dominated the situation in a clear way. It remained as such when the game reached the midway mark with a 38-40 score for Asesoft. The first minutes of the second half were a tight fight as the differences persisted. With Carutasu out of action due to his early 4 fouls in 11 minutes of play, allowed the Capitals to tie the game again at 53-53, but Asesoft soon regained its slim cushion of 57-63 after 30 minutes. The lead finally reached the double digits when Elliott scored the first 4 points of the last quarter, 57-67, and Asesoft tried to manage that cushion until the end. The Capitals never surrendered but Arvydas Cepulis' triple-plus-foul definitively killed the game as he made it 76-88 in minute 39 to put Asesoft out of the hosts' reach for the second win.

Head Coaches

CLAROS, PEP
Hanzevast Capitals
"We were not aggressive on defense. They have more experienced players. Our inside percentage was terrible and we were intimidated inside. The key thing was that Niels Meijer could only play ten minutes. Now we have to move on and think about our next games."
CEPULIS, ARVYDAS
CSU Asesoft
"We knew this was a very important game for us. So now we have a chance to go to the second round."
