THE TAKE

A pivotal Group B clash takes place in Malaga, Spain, on Wednesday when Unicaja hosts Aris TT Bank at the Martin Carpena Arena. Despite coming off a poor performance in a 91-75 loss at Efes Pilsen last week, Unicaja is tied with Lietuvos Rytas and Maccabi Tel Aviv for first place in the group at 5-2. But Aris is hot on their tails at 4-3. The teams have already been involved in a thriller this season, with Reyshawn Terry and Jeremiah Massey taking over in the fourth quarter for Aris, which won 87-83. Unicaja saw a five-game winning run snapped last week, but has a few positives to focus on: Center Daniel Santiago was in superb form last week, going off for a career-high 25 points and 8 rebounds to win Week 7 MVP honors but he will be out for several weeks as he suffered a muscle injury on his thigh; power forward Marcus Haislip has recovered from his knee injury and is available; and Unicaja is riding an 11-game home-court winning streak in the Euroleague. The play inside could be a major factor this week, as Aris could be without center Hanno Mottola, who is suffering from the flu. That could leave Massey and Lazaros Agadakos as the only experienced big men facing a Unicaja foursome made up of Santiago, Haislip, Boniface Ndong and Carlos Jimenez. However, Aris head coach Gordon Herbert could try and turn the tables on Unicaja, by going small and using Terry at power forward. Bracey Wright has emerged as a consistent scoring option for Aris in the backcourt. He teams with point guard Terrel Castle and veteran Georgios Kalaitzis to form the heart of the Aris backcourt that will challenge Davor Kus, Bojan Popovic and Carlos Cabezas, with Berni Rodriguez a likely opponent for on defense for Wright. Dimitrios Tsaldaris starts for Aris at small forward, where he will encounter the all-around skills of Jiri Welsch. Aris played well on the road this season before last week’s loss in Tel Aviv and has the experience to challenge in Malaga, although Unicaja is always the favorite at home. Keep an eye on the battle in the paint and how Aris copes with its shorter rotation to see if the visitors have what it takes to make some noise and move up the ladder in Group B.

Quotes Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We just finished a good first leg in the regular season and we also want to start the second one with the right foot. We are now facing one of the teams that beat us in the first leg, which has options to make it difficult for us from their athletic intensity, the talent of many of its players and their good organization. So we will probably need to do our best to win another Euroleague game and get closer to the first goal of the season, the Top 16."
HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
”Malaga plays much better at home than on the road. They play an up-tempo game full of shots from beyond the arc and have excellent inside game with their big guys. According to their last game against Real Madrid in the Spanish League, they seem to have no weaknesses, especially under the basket with Ndong and Santiago. However, we have to be consistent in defending and rebounding in order to control the game and increase our chances to win. It’s a great challenge for the team to prove its potential not only in Alexandreio, but also on the road.”

Players

POPOVIC, BOJAN
Unicaja
"It is a very important game for us, and our motivation is big because we lost against them in the first game. When you start a competition it is always different than how it turns out in the end. It was a game in which the teams were getting to know each other and they made mistakes because of that, and also the Aris crowd was impressive. We could have played a better game in Thessaloniki and that's why I think we will be concentrated to try to erase that loss. It is important not to lose games at home and we made it during the first leg. Of course, you always try to win all games be it home or away, but those in which you have your crowd backing you up are especially important."
KALAITZIS, GEORGIOS
Aris TT Bank
”They play extremely well at home. Their superiority under the basket is obvious with Ndong and Santiago, but they have also great guards to score from outside. They played an amazing game against Real Madrid at home. Playing in their gym is far from an easy task, but my team will travel to Spain ready to fight and beat Malaga. What is necessary is to control the tempo of the game and take the right decisions in every crucial moment of the game.”
Carlos Cabezas - Unicaja Unicaja spanked Aris TT Bank 73-52 to retain a share of first place in Group B. Unicaja improved to 6-2, the same as Lietuvos Rytas. Maccabi Tel Aviv could join the two with a win on Thursday. The victory was Unicaja’s 12 consecutive Euroleague win at the Martin Carpena Arena and avenged a season-opening loss to Aris in Greece. Aris lost its third straight road game and dropped to 4-4 overall. The hosts took charge in the opening period as a red-hot Carlos Cabezas scored 10 in a row to give Unicaja an 18-9 lead. Aris came back through Dimitrios Tsaldaris and Bracey Wright to get within 31-26 by halftime. Berni Rodriguez’s defense led to a pair of Boniface N’Dong slams at the start of the third as Unicaja started to dominate and the game turned into a bowout early in the fourth as Bojan Popovic and Davor Kus lit it up from outside as Unicaja built an insurmountable 25-point lead. Marcus Haislip led the hosts with 18 points and 4 blocked shots, while Cabezas added 14. Hanno Mottola, not expected to play due to the flu, led Aris with 12 points, Bracey Wright and Dimitrios Tsaldaris added 11 each and Jeremiah Massey posted 10 points, 14 rebounds and 4 steals.

Unicaja controlled the opening tip and scored the game’s first basket through Rodriguez inside. Massey scored for Aris on the visitors’ first possession and a Wright jumper on the next gave them the lead. Unicaja came right back through N’Dong as the game took shape as an even contest. Despite a fast pace, the defenses were active and both teams went through a three-minute scoreless stretch before Jiri Welsch’s steal created a basket for Cabezas. Terrel Castle matched him at the other end, but a Cabezas three-pointer and then 2 free throws gave the hosts a 4-point lead. Cabezas then pulled up for a triple and after an Aris turnover, Welsch fed him for another two at the buzzer, giving him all the points in a 10-0 run as Unicaja took an 18-9 lead at the end of the first period.

Jeremiah Massey - Aris TT BankReyshawn Terry scored to Aris at the start of the second period, but Cabezas remained on fire with another score. Tsaldaris hit a pair of jumpers to make it 20-15 as Cabezas sat down for a breather. However Carlos Jimenez’s free throws and a Haislip slam restored a comfortable lead for the home team. Wright drilled a deep three to recharge his team and Mottola soon added another triple to make it 26-21. Michal Chilinsky answered with a three of his own and Haislip came up with a big block on Massey and raced down to court to give Unicaja its first double-digit advantage. Undeterred, Massey scored in the paint and Tsaldaris drilled a three to get back within 31-26 by halftime.

Unicaja went to Hailsip down low for the first points of the second half and second later Rodriguez fed N’Dong for a thunderous slam in transition as Unicaja took control. Berni did it again, stripping Castle and then feeding N’Dong to put Unicaja up 11 and cause Aris to use a timeout. Wright finally got Aris on the board with a triple, but Cabezas fed Haislip for a sleek alley-oop that made it 39-29. Aris didn’t give in, as Massey and Wright both scored from the line, but a Haislip slam on the offensive glass kept the momentum with the hosts. Berni soon made it 44-32 with a steal and layup, after which Mottola fired in a three and Tsaldaris made a layup. Mottola then netted 2 free throws to cap a 0-7 spurt and get Aris back. Hailsip answered with a hook shot and Welsch converted a steal into 2 from the line, but Massey continued the back-and-forth quarter with an offensive tip-in. Mottola and Kus traded hoops before German Gabriel beat the buzzer with a three to make it 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter.

Michal Chilinsky - UnicajaPopovic and Kus drilled back-to-back threes at the start of the fourth period to give Unicaja its biggest lead yet and Welsch soon added a jumper to make it a 20-point game. Massey picked up a steal and a dunk after an Aris timeout, but a Haislip slam-plus-free throw erased any Aris hopes and a Popovic triple followed by a Hailsip triple put Unicaja up 71-46. Another timeout signaled garbage time, as teenage forward Paulo Prestes came on for Unicaja, while Savvas Iliadis saw his first action of the night for Aris. Simonas Serapinas drilled a deep three to try and keep the scoreline more respectable, but it was too late for anything else as the Malaga fans sang through the closing minutes of another big Unicaja home win.

Head Coaches

SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We started the third quarter with above-the-average defense that eventually became very good defense. That allowed us to run the break and gave us confidence in set plays, too. We kept a high defensive level, with good intensity and that compensated our offense, that was only good in certain moments. It is not easy to beat any Euroleague team by so many points. Unicaja lost against Aris in Thessaloniki with our full roster and managed to win by 20 tonight."
HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Unicaja got a well-deserved win tonight and you have to give them credit for that. They won the game because of their defense. We did not have a good start in the third quarter and never managed to recover. We cannot even try to think that this would not be a factor against a team like Unicaja. Marcus Haislip dominated the zones at both ends tonight."

Players

NDONG, BONIFACE
Unicaja
"It was a very important win for us and we took a step forwards to advance to the Top 16. We are playing better now, not being so up-and-down and this is what we were looking for since the beginning of the season. We are in a good position now in both competitions, not only in the Euroleague, but also in the Spanish League."
