THE TAKE

Two teams with different goals in this year's Euroleague will battle each other in Vitoria, Spain, on Wednesday evening when Tau Ceramica welcomes Alba Berlin in a Group C clash at Fernando Buesa Arena. Tau, which reached the Final Four in each of the last four season, is the only team unbeaten in Group C at 2-0, while Alba, in its first Euroleague season since 2004, is right behind at 1-1. It will be a special game for Alba top gun Casey Jacobsen, who helped Tau reach 2006 Final Four. Jacobsen is one of the weapons that Alba can offer at the wing spots, alongside scoring machine Julius Jenkins, do-it-all swingman Immanuel McElroy and versatile forward Aleksandar Nadjfeji. McElroy is set to have a key matchup against another aggressive and intense player in Pete Mickeal. Meanwhile, Jenkins will test his scoring skills against Igor Rakocevic, a former Alphondo Ford top scorer trophy winner, who had 20 points in the first half of his only Euroleague home game this season. Jacobsen will have a tough test against former teammate and Tau captain Sergi Vidal, a defensive stopper ready to shut down anyone. The point guard battle will be equally interesting, as Tau offers two-time All-Euroleague second team selection Pablo Prigioni and up-and-coming playmaker Mustafa Shakur. Both players will have intense battles against athletic playmakers Steffen Hamann and Rashad Wright. Alba is set to travel to Vitoria without big man Patrick Femerling, which means that the entire team will have to work hard to stop all-Euroleague center Tiago Splitter. The Brazilian center leads a deep frontcourt that also offers three-point threat Mirza Teletovic, center Stanko Barac and Week 1 MVP Will McDonald. Ansu Sesay will test his shooting range against Teletovic, while Adam Chubb seems the right man to face Splitter. Dragisa Drobnjak should also be ready to make his Euroleague debut with Alba this season. Tau has struggled against zone defenses in each of its two Euroleague games, so expect Alba to use this weapon, especially if Chubb gets into foul trouble. If Jacobsen and Jenkins are inspired, Alba will have its chances to win the game, even though Tau is the heavy favorite, as its 40-1 Euroleague home record since January 2005 says it all.

GAME QUOTES

Tau Ceramica
  • Forward Sergi Vidal will become just the seventh player to appear in 150 career Euroleague Basketball games when he takes the floor against Alba Berlin.
  • Guard Igor Rakocevic needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Point guard Pablo Prigioni’s first career 9-assist game came against Alba Berlin in January 2004. Tau won that game 94-81. It was the last meeting between these clubs until now.
Alba Berlin
  • Casey Jacobson made his European debut with Tau Ceramica in the 2005-06 season. He helped the club reach the Euroleague Final Four that season and win the Spanish King’s Cup. Only three players on Tau’s current roster – center Tiago Splitter, guard Pablo Prigioni and forward Sergi Vidal – were teammates of Jacobson that season.
  • Forward Immanuel McElroy led his team with 15 points in his only previous visit to Vitoria, a 97-68 loss with Rheinenergie in January of last season.
  • Berlin is one of only three teams to have two players in the top 20 in rebounding this season. McElroy’s 9 rebounds per game tie him for third in the Euroleague, while Adam Chubb is tied for 12th with 7 per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"Despite of our last two wins, I honestly think the team is still looking for its top level. I think we can, and we must, play at a higher level. Our main goal right now is to improve our defense and our transition game. I don’t know how far we are from reaching our best level at this point, but what I’m sure of is that we still need to step up a bit, even though we are winning lately. What we look for is quality practices, because it’s the only way we will improve. We faced some injuries and minor problems in the last weeks, and maybe that slowed us down a bit. I have a very good opinion of Alba Berlin. It is a good team. It is a German team, although its roster is made of several American players that can do a lot of things on court. They play fast basketball, modern and intense. Many of them are complete, all-around players, which will make the task a tough one. Their backcourt is very strong, with Jenkins as its main threat, but Sesay and also McElroy are pretty dangerous. McElroy is a man that can create for his teammates, and helps his team a lot."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"In a way this is the easiest game for Alba in Group C, as there is no burden on our team to win this game against such a strong opponent, which traditionally is the toughest home-court in the Euroleague. Our expectations are not high, but as far as the performance we have our own pressure to perform on a high level against an extremely well trained and dangerous team. We must face the fact, that there will be a huge challenge to attack this kind of team with the quality they have in players, in coaching and in organization at their home. We are now playing our third game in a long road trip. We started our trip last Wednesday, when we left for Istanbul and due to the lack of good connections, we are on the road since then. Tau, under these circumstances, is not the luckiest choice for a third road game in a row. But of course, we will prepare ourselves in the best possible way and will try to attack this team the strongest way possible."

TELETOVIC, MIRZA

"It’s important to keep the winning streak we started in the last two games, so the game against Alba will be a key challenge. It’s true I was in the spotlight in the last two games, against Olimpija and Real Madrid, but the most important thing is that the team is working fine, and that allows some players like me to shine on an individual basis sometimes. Although Alba is maybe not a big name or a well-known team I can say they count on very good players, I know many of them from last season and they are important players. Julius Jenkins is a key player for them, always running the court and staying active, but we cannot forget of the others, who are experienced and talented as well."
JACOBSEN, CASEY
Alba Berlin
"I have very good memories of playing for Tau Ceramica, but I will try to treat this just like another game. There are only three players on the team now that were my teammates three years ago: Sergi Vidal, Pablo Prigioni and Tiago Splitter. I look forward to seeing those guys and saying hello to them, but when the game starts, it's all business. I remember, when I played for Tau, we were a very tough team to beat at home and now I am coming with another team trying to beat them on their home court. It's one of the toughest, if not the toughest arena in the Euroleague. First and foremost it's the team, which combines some of the best players in Europe. Second the fans are great and very loud. I remember that playing at home, Tau somehow always felt much stronger. We will have to forget about this crowd and just try to win the game. It's not impossible to beat them, because nothing is impossible."
Igor Rakocevic - Tau Ceramica Despite missing a starter, Tau Ceramica put on a show of dominance for its home fans in Vitoria, Spain on Tuesday by blasting Alba Berlin with a 106-65 victory in Group C. Tau remains the group's undefeated leader at 3-0 while Alba, which was missing its top scorer in Julius Jenkins, who was injured, fell hard to 1-2. In retrospect, most remarkable was the fact that the two teams were tied 24-24 after one quarter. Tau broke that tie with a masterly six-minute, 18-0 run and went on to amass 63 points in the middle quarters alone to run away with the victory. If Tau's win was symphonic in its breadth, the conductor was Igor Rakocevic, who has started the season in a state of grace. Rakocevic scored 27 points with 6-for-6 three-point and 7-for-7 free-throw shooting while dishing a team-high 5 assists in just 25 minutes on the floor for the winners. Five of his teammates - Sergi Vidal with 17 points, Mirza Teletovic with 14, Tiago Splitter with 13, Stanko Barac and Will McDonald with 10 each - joined Rakocevic in double figures. Tau made almost two-thirds of its shots from the field and missed only one free throw while piling up 22 assists - all despite missing injured starter Pete Mickeal. Alba simply struggled after rallying from 9 points down in the first quarter to tie. It was all downhill after that, however. Ansu Sesay led Alba with 11 points, while Immanuel McElroy and Aleksandar Nadjfeji had 10 each.

Both teams went inside early, Tau to McDonald and Stanko Barac before Alba did the same with Sesay and Adam Chubb to tie 4-4. Hamann scored inside for Alba's first lead, but Rakocevic erased it with a triple at 8-6. Prigioni's defense unhinged Alba and Rakocevic was automatic from downtown to make it 13-6 before McElroy ended the bleeding for the guests. Barac's next shot was answered from long-range by Steffan Hamann. Prigioni beat the shot clock with his own triple, but Sesay matched it. Rakocevic hit free throws and Splitter a tip-in as Tau ratcheted up the pace, but Logan, Nadjfedji and Cadsey Jacobsen drove strong to keep Alba within 24-21. Then, with the shot-clock expiring near the end of the quarter, Rashad Wright launched an open triple from the wing to complete a 0-9 run for Alba that forged a 24-24 tie after 10 minutes.

Steffen Hamann - Alba Berlin The unstoppable Rakocevic went to the hoop and buried a triple restore Tau's lead at the start of the second quarter. But there was plenty more to come from him and his teammates. Splitter added a rolling turnaround and assisted Teletovic on a dunk while Rakocevic sank 3 of 3 free throws to keep Tau's run going. Next as Tau's run reached 12 unanswered points and its lead 36-24. Teletovic and Rakocevic then buried twin triples to make it 42-24 as Alba struggled to find a safe spot on the court. Finally, after Tau's 18-0 run on the chin over 6 scoreless minutes, Sesay smoothly dropped a three-pointer for the guests. An exchange of baskets ensued before Teletovic returned with another blast from the arc and a steal-and-dunk combo before Vidal put the finishing touches on a stellar quarter after which Tau was in command at 58-38.

The Tau avalanche picked up where it left off before halftime. In less than 3 minutes, Rakocevic buried two more triples while feeding Teletovic and Splitter for inside baskets, the latter with a free throw attached, that boosted the lead to 69-42. Rakocevic was still perfect from downtown and the free throw line for the game, and now he worked on his assists total by finding Vidal for a three-pointer at 72-44. Alba seemed not quite to believe what was happening as Vidal raised up for another triple before Mustafa Shakur and Splitter detonated dunks to make it 81-48. The visitors scored some themselves, but the points were lost in Tau's torrent as the third quarter closed 87-54 with Tau having scored 63 points in the previous 20 minutes.

Neither did the hosts calm down in the final quarter. Even with Rakocevic, Teletovic and Splitter seated on the bench, Tau took off on an 11-2 start and then hit the 100-point mark on a dunk by McDonald. No more proof was needed, so the teams exchanged a few baskets down the stretch as Tau gave its fans the gift of another impressive victory while Alba headed home to try to figure out what went wrong.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Tau Ceramica
"We had a big win, but... it may sound strange, but we have to play much better. Alba missed Julius Jenkins tonight and when we took off, they didn't fight back and allowed us to get a comfortable win. We didn't play that well to deserve such a big win. If you look at the first quarter, we lacked aggressiveness on defense. We need to be more focused and look for better options on offense. I just want to have a look at that first quarter. We didn't play well. I am happy for our good attitude and the fact that we didn't stop fighting."
PAVICEVIC, LUKA
Alba Berlin
"Tau Ceramica dominated the game from the very beginning and we did not manage to match them tonight. I could try to give some explanations about this loss, but they would only sound like excuses. The main issue is that they did not allow us to play our game."

Players

VIDAL, SERGI
Tau Ceramica
"We didn't expect to get such a big win, not at all. Of course, the game in Berlin will be way different. The final score is just an anecdote. This is not the difference between the two teams. Alba played without Julius Jenkins, who is a very important player for them."
