THE TAKE

Snaidero hosts former ULEB Cup champions Lietuvos Rytas on Tuesday in Udine, Italy for he first game of their two-leg ULEB Cup eighthfinals series. Both teams will present new faces in the elimination round as Snaidero added shooter Mike Penberthy, while point guard Jerome Allen, who started the season with PAOK Thessaloniki, is now eligible. The Lithuanian champions have brought in streaky speedy point guard and three-point shooter Ivan Kolijevic. Snaidero must hope the home crowed will help a lot, however, because the hosts will apparently play without injured big man Jacobs Jaacks (11.6 ppg., 7 rpg.), the team'stop rebounder, as well as substitute swingman Kabongo Mutombo, who are both injured. The additions of Allen and Penberthy make an already deep Snadiero backcourt even more dangerous. Kristaps Valters (14.2 ppg., 48.1% 3FG), who led the competition with 5.8 assists per game, leads a group that includes Larry O'Bannon (12.2 ppg.), Michele Antonutti (5.8 ppg.) and Silvio Gigena (7.4 ppg., 44% 3FG), all of whom can light it up from downtown. Penberthy, a streak shooter with eight-meter range, should fit right in, while Allen will share ballhandling duties with Valters. In the frontcourt, Damon Williams (11.1 ppg., 5.6 rpg., 43.2% 3FG) is a lethal weapon, who can score in the open court or use his speed and size to his advantage in a miss-match. Under the boards, Christian Di Giuliomaria (3.6 rpg.) and Joel Zacchetti (2.4 rpg.) will have to hold their own without Jaacks against L. Rytas's Joao Paolo Batista (10.4 ppg., 4.5 rpg.) and Matt Nielsen (10.1 ppg., 6 rpg.). L. Rytas averaged 82.2 points per game until now and the late addition of Kareem Rush (18.5 ppg.) seemed to give them even more offensive potential. With veteran point guard Robert Stelmahers (10.5 ppg., 3.3 apg., 43.3% 3FG) – one of the only remaining players from the team's 2005 ULEB-Cup-winning side – still questionable, Janis Blums and Koljevic could have the ball in their hands more. Sixth man Andrius Slezas (9.8 ppg.) can also shake things up when he gets his chance. This series looks quite balanced, with great shooters, experienced and talented players and veteran coaches on the bench ready to add tactical surprises. Nevertheless, L. Rytas's near-perfect home record – the club hasn't lost a home game in the ULEB Cup in over three years, winning 16 straight during that stretch – makes the first leg a must-win for Snaidero to have a fighting chance.

Quotes Head Coaches

PANCOTTO, CESARE
Snaidero Udine
"We are ready to play against the tradition of the ULEB Cup, because Lietuvos Rytas is the history of the competition. They are a strong team, full of talent, it is a new challenge for us, the forth against the first, and we have to go also against it. I told my players that we have to search the win in this first match, but we must be focused on an 80-minute game, we don't have to think about the point-difference. We have to do our things as good as possible, and don't think about how to stop Lietuvos Rytas."
SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Lietuvos Rytas
"We didn’t see a lot of Snaidero games after they made changes in the roster. For the second round they have two new Americans, both very expeerenced players – Jerome Allen and Mike Penberthy. We will see how Snaidero will function with them. On the other side, we lack three very important players – Stelmahers, Nielsen and Rush, all injured. That's why I think Snaidero have some kind of advantage on the court. We need to concentrate on our defense because Snaidero is living on the three-point shooting. It is very important not to let them score from the perimeter. We have a chance to win the rebounds and we will try to play smart basketball in offense. If we play patiently and together I hope it will be enough to get a good result. We will do our best to win but if we finish the game few points behind it will be also good result for us."

Players

Damon Williams - Snaidero Udine It was a tale of two halves in Udine, Italy on Tuesday as Snaidero hung on to defeat visiting Lietuvos Rytas 75-72 in the opener of their two-game eighthfinal series on Tuesday. Snaidero will hope it doesn't regret squandering leads of up to 16 points late in the first half when the rematch to end the series takes place in Vilnius, Lithuania next week. Still, despite missing top big man Jacobs Jaacks, the hosts were able to beat back a late L. Rytas rally to win. Damon Williams led the way for Snaidero with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jerome Allen added 17 and Christian DiGiulomaria 15 for the winners. Andrius Slezas led the L. Rytas comeback and finished with 18 points, while Arturas Jomantas put up 17 and Marijonas Petravicius 11.

The lead changed four times in the opening minutes until Allen popped his team's second three-pointer to make it 10-6. DiGiulomaria, who had landed Snaidero's first triple, now added a layup to the lead. Petravicius got 3 points back for L. Rytas, but Allen and Williams combined on a new 6-0 spurt that shot Snaidero way in front, 18-9. When Joel Zaccheti and Kristaps Valters shared 4 points, Snaidero had a 22-10 lead. L. Rytas needed to react, and did, as Joao Paulo Batista, Arturas Jomantas, Tomas Delininkaitis and its own newcomer, Ivan Koljevic, combined on a 2-8 finish run that cut Snaidero's advantage to 24-18 after 10 minutes. Koljevic's early triple in the second quarter kept the visitors rolling to within 26-23 on a layup by Jomantas. DiGiulomaria had other ideas, however, and to an earlier layup, he now added his second and third strikes from downtown, back to back, for Snaidero's first 8 points of the quarter. When Allen followed with a layup, the hosts were ahead by double digits again, 34-23, and kept going from there. As the Snaidero defense locked up L. Rytas, Williams and Zacchetti poured in the next 5 points to extend the run to 13-0 and the lead to 39-23. Slezus stopped the bleeding with a triple for L. Rytas, as he and Jomantas combined on the 12 points in the last 2 minutes of the half for the visitors. L. Rytas wasn't stopping Snaidero, however, so even when the lead was trimmed to single digits, Valters got loose to end the second quarter with a triple and send the hosts to the break ahead by 49-37.

Andrius Slezas - Lietuvos Rytas L. Rytas got serious on defense after intermission, holding Snaidero scoreless for most of 3 minutes whle Petravicius scored 5 points to get the visitors back in the game at 49-42. Zaccheti drilled a three to stop Snaidero's slide, but not its troubles. Larry O'Bannon restored the double-digit lead for Snaidero at 54-43, but Jomantas, Petravicius, Slezas and Tomas Delininkaitis unloaded a 0-10 blast that knocked the hosts on their heels. Mike Penberthy punched in a triple to let Snaidero breathe again, then Williams, Allen and DiGiulomaria got to the line for 4 free throws. But after Batista finished the third quarter with a layup, Snaidero was clinging to a 61-57 lead. It didn't last long, either. Batista, Jomantas and Janis Blums, with a triple, scored the first three baskets of the final quarter as L. Rytas vaulted ahead 61-64. DiGiulomaria saved Snaidero then with a triple. Allen soon put the hosts again, 68-66, with 4 points in a row, but L. Rytas kept coming and tying it up, the third of three times at 72-72 on a Kojevic's second consecutive basket. Williams soon put Snaidero back in front, 75-72, while he and DiGiulomaria came up with a big blocked shots down the stretch to preserve the victory.

SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Lietuvos Rytas
"We played bad in the first half, but better in the second one. We are a team with good shooters but tonight we shot with only 40% from the court. We had a comeback in the match after the score 49-37 in minute 20 with offensive rebounds and more steals. We were without Stelmahers, Nielsen and Rush. I believe that in game 2 we will have great chances to go further in the competition."

Players

GIGENA, SILVIO
Snaidero Udine
"We played a good first half. We wanted to win with a bigger advantage but Lietuvos Rytas is one of the strongest teams of the ULEB Cup. Now it will be more difficult for us to pass the round. We must think only about ourselves."
