THE TAKE

Benetton Basket Bwin (4-1) hosts Cajasol Sevilla (5-0) on Tuesday night at the Palaverde in Treviso in a big-reward game on the closing week of the Last 16 stage. Having already qualified for the quarterfinals with the best records in Group L, one team will have a chance to claim the group crown in this matchup. A win would suffice for the visiting side to notch first place, while the hosts need to do so by more than 11 points after losing to Cajasol in Week 2. Benetton’s Devin Smith is the highest-ranked player in the Last 16 in terms of performance index rating, second in points only behind Gran Canaria’s Jaycee Carroll, and the guard went off for 35 points last week against Berlin. Playmaker Stefan Markovic will surely look to get him the ball early and often. But the nifty point guard will also work to get others involved as well, like Alessandro Gentile or Massimo Bulleri. Cajasol’s backcourt is a potent one, where Louis Bullock excels as a big-time scorer and Tomas Satoranski and Txemi Urtasun stand out as all around guards who can defend, attack and shoot whenever called upon, with Satoranski excelling in playmaking duties. Tariq Kirksay has been solid at the forward spot while leading the Last 16 in steals on the defensive end and Katelynas Mindaugas plays a big role in the rotation with his rebounding, passing and deep-range shooting. But the main offensive threat on head coach Joan Plaza’s roster has been center Paul Davis, a scoring and rebounding dynamo who can overpower opponents or flash his touch in the post, currently ranked second in index rating, just behind Benetton’s Smith. Center Donatas Motiejunas needs to be accounted for in the paint for the hosts, and can also rebound with the best of them. Juan Jose Triguero will be on hand to help out in the visiting rotation, especially on the boards, where he can take advantage of his size and strength. Benetton is defensively aggressive, with Smith and forward Greg Brunner ranking among the leading ball hawks, and Brian Skinner has added another dimension at that end with his shot blocking. With only good things to play for at this stage and two of the best players in the competition trying to lead their teams, maybe the positive energy translates on the court, making for a premium Eurocup game.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"It's hard to make a prevision of the team that we will have available for the game against Cajasol. Peric and mrakovic managed to play the last Italian League game in the last minute but they are undergoing therapy and will not be able to practice so I think we will be a little short on rotations again. Toolson has also left the team so that makes it even worse. It will be a game that we must face calm. Both teams have advanced to the Quarterfinals and we will play for the first place of the group. Whatever the outcome, our main goal is to be in the Eurocup Finals that will be played at our home. I hope our fans help us through this important moment of the season so we can reach the goals we have set."

"We have one thing clear: we won't play to defend our point differential. We travel to Treviso to win the game and end up as group champs. We will play to win and whatever the outcome is with the quarterfinals, fine. If we want to maintain the level we are showing, we must forget about the victories we already have and be aware that playing in a court like this is difficult. When you have many wins in a row, and the same happens with losses, you discover the true selves of your players. We are winning games and the desire to win stays strong, that is the most important thing."

Players

Devin Smith - Benetton Bwin (photo baloncestosevilla)Benetton Bwin became the Last 16 Group L champion by thrashing Cajasol Sevilla 84-68 in Treviso, Italy on Tuesday. Both teams tied atop this group's standings with a 5-1 record, but Benetton finished first with its 16-point win tonight, as Cajasol had preciously downed the Italian powerhouse 66-55 in Seville, Spain earlier on in this phase. As such, Benetton will have the home court advantage in its two-way Quarterfinals series against BG Goettingen while Cajasol faces Last 16 Group J champion Budivelnik. Devin Smith paced the winners with 20 points. Massimo Bulleri and Donatas Motiejunas each added 12 while Brian Skinner and Hrvoje Peric had 10 apiece for Benetton. Skinner addeed 17 rebounds for a double-double. Paul Davis led Cajasol with 20 points. Louis Bullock added 17 while Txemi Urtasun had 12 for the guests, that led 18-20 late in the first quarter. A 20-0 run allowed Benetton to get the lead for good, 38-20. Cajasol managed to get within 43-35 soon after the break but Benetton boosted its margin to 63-45 early in the fourth quarter and cruised to a well-deserved, decisive home win.

Motiejunas got Benetton going with a tip-in and Greg Brunner added a layup for a 4-2 Benetton lead. Motiejunas scored again but a jumper by Bullock and a dunk off a steal by Tariq Kirksay tied it at 6-6. Brunner split free throws and traded baskets with Kirksay to give his team a 9-8 edge. Cajasol kept running its offense through an unstoppable Davis but a three-pointer by Bulleri provided another lead change, 14-13. Davis and Smith exchanged baskets but a jumper by Earl Calloway and a triple by Urtasun gave Cajasol a 18-20 edge. Jakub Wojciechowski took over with a dunk, Bulleri sank a jumper and an easy basket by Skinner gave Benetton a 24-20 lead after 10 minutes. Cajasol kept struggling to score early in the second quarter and a layup by Motiejunas made the guests call timeout at 28-20. Smith shined with a fast break basket and free throws by Motiejunas allowed Benetton to reach its goal, 32-20. Cajasol had been scoreless for more than 9 minutes and free throws by Bulleri capped a mamooth 20-0 run for a 38-20 score. Davis finally found the way to the basket, Tomas Satoransky added an off-balance basket and free throws by Bullock gave Cajasol some fresh air, 38-26. Foul shots by Urtasun and a buzzer-beating triple by Bullock got the guests within 41-31 at halftime.

Bullock made free throws and soon added a jumper to give Cajasol some hope, 43-35, right after the break. Brunner kept pacing Benetton with a three-point play and Motejiunas added a jumper, as the guests could not find the way to the basket. Alessandro Gentile scored off a steal to make it a 13-point game, 51-37. Bullock tried to change things with a jumper but layup by Peric and free throws by Motiejunas kept Benetton way ahead, 55-39. Mindaugas Katelynas and Calloway made free throws but a dunk by Skinner and a layup by Smith allowed Benetton to keep a 59-43 margin after 30 minutes. Both teams now fought for points differential, as Cajasol could afford an 11-point loss and still win the group. Katelynas made free throws but a layup by Smith and a jumper by Skinner boosted the hosts' lead to 63-45. Paul Davis dunked it and Bullock scored again but they didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, Smith kept Benetton out of trouble, 67-49, with under 6 minutes left. Smith struck from downtown and by the time Skinner scored in the paint, everything was said and done already. Benetton survived its toughest test this season with a convincing home win while Cajasol must bounce back right away and get ready for its two-way series against Budivelnik.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Benetton Bwin
"After 13 wins and just one loss in the Eurocup this season, I am really happy that we made it to the Quarterfinals. There were two or three things we have not done well but Cajasol is a very dangerous team. They showed it this weekend against Gran Canaria 2014 in the Spanish League, getting a big lead after the first half. I think that it was important for us to stay focused to win for all 40 minutes if we wanted to be first in this round. We played excellent basketball in the first seven minutes of the second quarter but Cajasol had 11 quick points just like that. I want to congratulate my team. We will face Goettingen in the Quarterfinals, a team that deserves a lot of respect."
PLAZA, JOAN
Cajasol Sevilla
"I said a week ago that it was time to go to Treviso and show why we are ranked first in this group. In the first half of the game, especially in the second quarter, we didn't play as we did recently. We were as intense as we usually are but didn't score in the most decisive moments of the game. We would have like to win the game or lose by up to 11 points but it wasn't easy. We missed too many easy shots and played arguably our worst third and fourth quarters in recent games. We did not manage to return to the game and can't allow our opponents to make 61% of its two-pointers. We insisted to shoot from long distance but only hit 21% three-pointers, a low percentage."

Players

GENTILE, ALESSANDRO
Benetton Bwin
"I am happy - mainly because Benetton Basket made it to the Eurocup Quarterfinals. I am sure that we will keep playing to win the competition. Everyone in this team wants to make it to the Eurocup Finals at Palaverde, our home court. I am happy not only because we managed to beat Cajasol Sevilla, but also I will take part in the Italian All-Star Game. I have been playing well in both the Italian League and the Eurocup lately."
KIRKSAY, TARIQ
Cajasol Sevilla
"Even with this loss, I am happy with my team because I know exactly what we are doing to keep growing as a team. We are working very hard and this loss doesn't mean a step backwards. This loss doesn't change the fact that we accumulated 10 consecutive wins in both competitions. This has been a warm-up for the Eurocup Quarterfinals. We won in Sevilla by 11 and were not able to keep that advantage to finish first. We hope to learn our lesson and avoid going through the same situation in the next round."
