THE TAKE

Two teams hoping to bounce back from recent losses will battle each other in the Russian capital on Wednesday when CSKA Moscow hosts Union Olimpija in a big showdown between domestic champions. CSKA looks to return to its winning ways after back-to-back losses against Lottomatica and Maccabi, so a win would keep the Russian powerhouse out of a dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Olimpija is still looking for its first win and needs to do so as soon as possible to keep its Top 16 hopes alive. Olimpija is still without Vlado Ilievski, so Dusan Djordjevic and Jaka Klobucar will share the playmaker duties, with star guard Sani Becirovic coming off the bench. Djordjevic has the tough mission to face J.R. Holden, one of the best point guards in the competition and an outstanding on-the-ball defender. Backcourtmate Zoran Planinic’s combination of size and speed makes him a natural mismatch. CSKA will be very concerned with stopping Becirovic, but Olimpija has plenty of options at both wings. Matt Walsh has been unstoppable lately, leading the league with 25.7 points per game and 13 three-pointers made this season. Saso Obzolt offers instant offense and Pawel Kikowski brings energy off the bench. Walsh has a very important matchup against former Euroleague MVP Ramunas Siskauskas, the silent leader of his team. Ozbolt and Becirovic are ready to test their shooting skills against Trajan Langdon and Anton Ponkrashov. The battle in the paint will be equally interesting, as both teams have deep, versatile lineups around the baskets. Viktor Khryapa, one of the best defensive players in the competition, is set to see playing time at both forwards, with Andrei Vorontsevich opening the court with his mobility and unlimited range. Blue-collar forward Nikita Kurbanov, centers Dimitri Sokolov and Sasha Kaun and mobile big man Ivan Radenovic round out an interesting CSKA frontcourt. Khryapa has a critical matchup against Gasper Vidmar, who looks up to the challenge. Sokolov will test his skills against Edin Bavcic, while Radenovic and Vorontsevich must guard face-up power forward Uros Slokar. Kaun will match his size against Vladimir Golubovic. CSKA must be its usual self in defense and improve its offense through Holden, Langdon and Siskauskas. Olimpija comes off an Adriatic League road win against FMP and is ready for more with Becirovic, Walsh and Slokar as its key players. CSKA is the favorite at home, however expect Olimpija to be ready knowing that a road win could change its whole season outlook.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"Olimpija is a very ambitious team, which is famous in growing the stars of European basketball – I can easily name 10 or 15 players. The team looks the same now: its core is comprised from young players and solidified by Walsh, plus Slokar and Becirovic who came back to alma mater. Olimpija showed a lot of heart this season. They lost to Maroussi and Caja Laboral by small margins, keeping their chances until the last seconds. Our task is to play with full attention and concentration, to minimize the number of turnovers and to work hard on the glass."
ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"CSKA and us did not have a good start of the season so this is why both teams need this win right now. I am fully aware that each and every CSKA player will give their best to avoid a third consecutive loss. They are favourites in this game, no doubt about it, but that doesn't mean will be waving the white flag. CSKA is not the same team as last season. There is less team disciplines and plays more on individual actions. Our main goal is to play as a team, and then we must stop their experienced players. We must play at the same level all 40 minutes long. I see our chances under the baskets, where our big men have played really well in the last games. CSKA centers lack a bit of experience and we must make the most of that."

Players

VORONTSEVICH, ANDREY
CSKA Moscow
"We already studied the tape of Olimpija games and I can state that they are very strong opponent. Of course, I paid most of my attention at Slokar and Vidmar – key players for Olimpija under the basket. Our mood is very serious, we are ready for the battle, we will try everything possible to defend our home court."
BECIROVIC, SANI
Union Olimpija
"We are facing a difficult game but are travelling to Moscow with the right motivation. We gave a good example on how to play defense in our last Adriatic League game against FMP. If we play the way we did against FMP, we can have chances to beat CSKA. We are aware that this win would be very important in our race to reach the Top 16. We know that CSKA is the favourite, but they have not been playing well this season and this allows us to be a bit optimistic."
Trajan Langdon - CSKA MoscowAfter losing the previous two games, CSKA Moscow righted the ship in Week 4 by defending its home floor against the still winless Union Olimpija 79-69. The Russian champs improved to 2-2 in Group C behind 19 points from Trajan Langdon, who took sole possession of 10th place on the Euroleague’s all-time scoring list. CSKA visits Caja Laboral next week, while Olimpija seeks its first win when it hosts Lottomatica Roma. CSKA used a strong performance on both ends of the court to open an 18-point lead in the opening moments of the second quarter and then used its veteran savvy to hold off Olimpija’s repeated attempts at a comeback. Ramunas Siskauskas added 18 points and Viktor Khryapa filled in the playmaking hole left by the missing J.R. Holden, dishing out 8 assists in addition to scoring 10 points. Matt Walsh once again led Olimpija with 21 points while Saso Ozbolt and Edin Bavcic added 13 and 11, respectively, in the losing effort.

CSKA started the scoring with a three-point play from Dimitry Sokolov, but Bavcic used a screen to get a clean layup to quickly answer for Union Olimpija. Khryapa dished a nice assist to Zoran Planinic for an easy score inside and the CSKA guard added 2 more on a turnaround in the lane next trip down. Walsh and Langdon traded deep jumpers before Ozbolt swished another from midrange for Olimpija. Siskauskas and Ozbolt exchanged triples as both team lit it up from the field. Siskauskas scored inside and then drilled a three to give CSKA a 17-12 lead. CSKA turned up its defense and opened up an 11-point lead as Langdon nailed a three, Sokolov made 1 of 2 from the free throw line and Langdon swished a baseline jumper. Walsh made 2 foul shots to break the Olimpija dry spell, but Khryapa made a short jumper and Anton Ponkrashov nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give CSKA a 30-15 lead after 10 minutes.

Both teams came out cold in the second quarter till Langdon drilled a three-pointer with a defender in his face to push the hosts’ advantage to 18. The CSKA defense continued to suffocate the Olimpija big men as Langdon drew a charge against Uros Slokar. Walsh finally scored a three-pointer to get Olimpija on the board. Sani Becirovic added a layup in transition and Slokar hit 2 free throws off another CSKA turnover to pull Olimpija to within 10 points. Siskauskas fed Ivan Radenovic for a layup, but then the CSKA star picked up his third foul and had to go to the bench. Khryapa got out on the break for a one-handed dunk, but Olimpija responded and cut the deficit to 7. Ozbolt sparked the run by driving into a crowded lane for a tough bank shot and Walsh capped the spurt with a three-pointer moments later. Sokolov was the recipient of a dunk after some good ball movement from his team and CSKA managed to reestablish its double digit lead at 44-33 going into the half on 2 free throws from Andrey Vorontsevich.

Saso Ozbolt - Union OlimpijaOzbolt drilled a three-pointer to open the third quarter and Becirovic added a layup and a free throw to cut the deficit to 5 points as Olimpija tightened its defense and CSKA struggled to get into its offensive game. Langdon responded by moving inside for a layup, and, after consecutive giveaways by Walsh, Ponkrashov scored a field goal to give CSKA some breathing room. Ozbolt fed a pass to Slokar for a 2 points, but Siskaukas came back on the court to notched his 10th point on a layup, forcing coach Olimpija head coach Jure Zdovc to call for time with the score at 50-41. Becirovic hit from near, but Siskauskas drew a foul against Dusan Djordjevic while taking a triple and hit all 3 foul shots. Slokar went 1 for 2 from the line, but Langdon drained a three-pointer that made it 56-44. Bavcic hit back from long range, but Langdon stepped up and added 2 more from the foul line. Ozbolt hit another three, Khryapa answered with a dunk and Slokar made a jumper as the teams traded blows. CSKA went into the final period holding a 64-54 lead.

Siskauskas and Bavcic matched each other with three-pointers to begin the fourth quarter. Nikita Kurbanov threw down a dunk off an assist from Khryapa and Ponkrashov gave CSKA a 71-57 bulge on a layup moments later. Walsh finally managed to score for Olimpija, but CSKA could smell the win and would not let the challengers maintain any consistency on offense. Khryapa put the nail in Olimpija’s coffin with a huge three-pointer with five to play. Vidmar scored a basket-plus-foul and Walsh chipped in 2 free throws moments later to get the lead down to 75-64. Siskauskas answered with a layup, but Vidmar scored once again inside. Walsh added a point from the line to claw to within 10 points late, but it was CSKA’s night to shout victory.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
CSKA Moscow
"In the first quarter we were very focused and played the kind of basketball that I would like to see throughout all 40 minutes, not only 10. Only our leaders, Langdon, Siskauskas and Khryapa, played stable and look good so far. Our young players, unfortunately, are not stable enough yet. After leading by 15 in the first period, one should try to develop a bigger advantage, not to let the opponents get closer like we did. Only Kurbanov and Ponkrashov, who did not play in the first half, helped the veterans due to their fresh legs and aggressive play. We are developing, but, unfortunately, not as fast as we would like. We showed good quality basketball during some fragments. Khryapa made a lot of turnovers again, but that's because he is a sharp player. Viktor feels bad about that, we've been talking a lot. We are trying to reduce the number of long passes in team schemes. I still trust Viktor and I consider him a leader of the team. Do not forget that he suffered an injury in the summer, and is still getting back into shape."
ZDOVC, JURE
Union Olimpija
"CSKA deserved to win this game. They played better, harder and smarter than us. And we started the game very soft. We tried to concentrate in the paint, but got the three-pointers immediately. In fact they finished the game in the first quarter. Then we played better and better, but not smart enough. We made too many mistakes and CSKA punished us for every one."
