THE TAKE

The 10th meeting in three seasons between Prokom Trefl and Efes Pilsen will end their Euroleague seasons on Wednesday in Sopot, Poland but is nonetheless intriguing for the speed in which this rivalry has been built. Neither team had faced the other ever before two seasons ago, but the last time they played, Prokom won for the first time after eight losses. That victory was the first by a Polish team in Top 16 history and also derailed Efes's plans of challenging for the quarterfinal playoffs. Now, they meet again, both eliminated with 1-4 records in Group F. The winner will finish third, and neither wants to finish behind the other. When they met in Istanbul last month, Prokom beat Efes 67-71 in overtime. This time around, Efes is coming off an 82-78 home win against Winterthur FCB in which Marcus Haislip (14.5 ppg., 6.8 rpg., 1.8 bpg.) had 25 points and 11 rebounds. Haislip leads the Top 16 in rebounds and blocked shots, highlighting a deep Efes frontcourt that also features rebound ace Kerem Gonlum (5.4 ppg., 4.2 rpg.), low post master Niksa Prkacin (6.7 ppg., 3.7 rpg.) and mobile big man Ermal Kuqo (8.8 ppg.). Both Gonlum and Haislip will have the tough mission to guard Michael Andersen (7.1 ppg., 3.6 rpg.), Filip Dylewicz (4.1 ppg.) and former Efes center Huseyin Besok (9.7 ppg., 41.7% 3FG, 4.5 rpg.). Meanwhile, Kuqo and Prkacin will test their defensive skills against experienced big men Tomas Masiulis (4.4 ppg., 4 rpg.) or Adam Wojcik (6.8 ppg.). The point guard battle will also be interesting, as Cuneyt Erden (4.9 ppg., 42.3% 3FG) and Fikret Can Akin (1.2 apg.) have been sharing the playmaker duties for Efes lately. Both players will have a tough matchup against Rashid Atkins (8.2 ppg., 45.5% 3FG, 2.6 apg.), who had 16 points against Efes in Istanbul, and Tomas Pacesas. Drew Nicholas (14.2 ppg., 40% 3FG, 3.7 apg.) stays as the main scoring threat for Efes, even when he gets plenty help at both wings from Antonio Granger (5.7 ppg., 40% 3FG). After coming out of nowhere to help beat Barcelona, teenage forward Baris Hersek (2.7 ppg.) might see extended playing time for Efes, too. Prokom has its own battery of shooters featuring Christian Dalmau (10.5 ppg., 2.2 apg.), Donatas Slanina (10.7 ppg., 88.9% FT) or Jasmin Hukic (6.7 ppg.). Above all, expect a defensive, balanced game in which each team will try to finish the Euroleague season on an up note.

Quotes Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
"We have to do everything to win this game and thank our fans for their great support in the whole Euroleague season. We have won in Istanbul and we want to repeat it at home. I think it will be possible if we play the same level as we did in Turkey. I think we have had a good season in the Euroleage. We are in the Top 16, where we have just won one game and played even games against Barcelona and Efes. I hope we will end this season with a victory."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
“It's just a kind of prestige match for each of us. We've played each other many times not only this season but in the last few years. Both teams know each other well enough. The one who is better on the day of the match will be close to winning the game. As I have said before and after the game against Winterthur Barcelona, we are still trying to adjust ourselves to a new playing format. We will be working on this new format against Prokom Trefl, too.”

"It will be a game between two teams who are without chances to get to the playoffs, but even though that's true, I expect a hard game. Both teams want to finish this Euroleague season well. I hope we will win. We play at home and we were better than Efes in the first game in the Top 168. We have to play good defense and stop their fast attack. These things will be the most importnat if we think to end this season with victory."
HAISLIP, MARCUS
Efes Pilsen
“It's not good for us to fail earlier than the expectations. Sometimes small mistakes are enough for you to lose your direction. We are deeply disappointed with what happened in the last couple of weeks. It's not easy to concentrate when you have no target to reach. But we always play to win and it will be the same against Prokom Trefl.”
Antonio Granger - Efes Pilsen A 10th game in three seasons between them saw Efes Pilsen reestablish its winning ways against Prokom with a 64-72 road win to close out the Top 16 and the Euroleague season for both teams. Efes raised its record to 2-4 and took third place in Group F with the victory. Prokom finished last at 1-5, but had broken its eight-game losing streak against Efes earlier with the only Top 16 victory ever by a Polish team. After being injured most of the season, Antonio Granger had his best game of the Top 16 for Efes with 23 points. Ermal Kuqo added 13 and Drew Nicholas 10. Jasmin Hukic popped for 15 points and Donatas Slanina 14 for Prokom.

Kuqo got Efes going on the right foot with a pair of quick jumpers to which Granger added a layup for a 0-6 start. Slanina lit up Prokom's side of the scoreboard with a three-pointer, while Besok scored the hosts' next 5 points, but Efes stayed ahead by going to its big men, Kuqo and Marcus Haislip. After Granger and Slanina traded triples, Kuqo boosted his point total to 9 already as Efes went ahead 11-16. Granger soon added his second strike from the arc, while Haislip detonated a dunk with a free throw as bonus to make it 13-22. Slanina and Michael Andersen got 5 points back for Prokom, but Niksa Prkacin finished the quarter with a bucket that left Efes holding an 18-24 edge.

Donatas Slanina - Prokom TreflPrkacin opened the second quarter with another basket to which Erden Cuneyt added free throws for the first double-digit lead, 18-28. Andersen and Slanina, from downtown, cut the difference in half, but Granger kept scoring to lift it back up again to 11 points, 23-34, for the visitors. After Jasmin Hukic broke a scoreless minute for Prokom, Granger was back with a new three-pointer at 25-37. The teams were content to trade baskets over the last few minutes of the half until Kerem Gonlum's slam dunk led them to the lockers with Efes still clearly in charge at 31-45.

Granger added to the Efes lead after the break before Rashid Atkins, Andersen and Adam Wojcik scored the next 8 points to pull Prokom within 39-47. A lull in the scoring ended with Nicholas landing a shot from the arc to reestablish a double-digit lead, 39-50. Slaninas and Atkins brought it back down to 43-50 before Kuqo, Baris Hersek and Nicholas ended the quarter with a 0-9 barrage that had the guests back in the driver's seat, up 43-59 after 30 minutes.

Ermal Kuqo - Efes PilsenThe Sopot fans saw a shooting contest as Christian Dalmay and Hukic of Prokom hit 3 triples between them while Granger and Hersek each hit his own for Efes to start the final quarter. That left a 52-65 scoreboard that the hosts kept firing away to reduce. The difference fell to 59-67. Almost 3 scoreless minutes followed until Hukic blasted a triple and buouyed Prokom's hopes at 62-67, but Granger matched him to end the threat as Efes left Poland with third place in Group F.

Head Coaches

KIJEWSKI, EUGENIUSZ
Prokom Trefl Sopot
“We were close to winning. In the last quarter, we cut the gap and had chances to take a lead, but Dylewicz missed an open shot and we could forget about wining. We had both good and bad moments tonight. Generally I'm satisfied of our performance in the Euroleague. It was better season than a year ago. We have won one game in the Top 16, though we had a very strong group. We have realized our goals that were given to us by our sponsors.”
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
“We controlled the game from the beginning till the end. One time Prokom cut the gap to 5 points, but we quickly responded with a triple and we did not let the hosts come back to game. I'm worried about Erden, who is injured and has problems with a knee. I'm pretty satisfied with our Euroleague season.”

Players

ATKINS, RASHID
Prokom Trefl Sopot
“We missed many easy shots. Too easy we let the guests take an advantage. We could not stop their fast breaks. We were struggling today. Now we have to forget about it and concentrate on the Polish league. We will have difficult matches in the next weeks. This Euroleague season was not so good. I'm not fully satisfied. However I think if we played in another group, we could have won more than one game.”
NICHOLAS, DREW
Efes Pilsen
“From the beginning the game was under our control. In the first minutes, we scored some easy points and then we were able to control the tempo of the game. This season was not successful. Efes is a good club that should be in the last eight.”
