THE TAKE

First place in Group A and a pass to the Top 16 are in play when Olympiacos Piraeus visits Unicaja on Wednesday in a game between two hot, if injury-plagued, teams. Olympiacos (5-1) finally took over exclusive hold of first placelast week and with this win can not only guarantee the Top 16, but position itself to win the group. At the same time, Unicaja (4-3) has won convincingly of late, in the Euroleague and domestically. Indeed, Unicaja's solid road win to ruin Pini Gershon's return to the Maccabi Electra bench put everyone on notice again about how dangerous Aito Garcia Reneses's team can be, even with players missing. What's more, Unicaja can have some of those players back for Wednesday's showdown, as signature guards Berni Rodriguez and Carlos Cabezas were practicing again on Monday and might both play. Meanwhile, Olympiacos has been hit with injuries to key rotation players Panagiotis Vassilopoulos and Zoran Erceg, who normally allow head coach Panagiotis Giannakis to play big or small lineups when necessary. Covering their minutes will now fall to Josh Childress, who will likely see defense both quick and physical from Jiri Welsch and Carlos Jimenez, respectively. Reds center Giannis Bourousis has battled flu this weekend, but will be ready - and needed - to bang with both Boniface Ndong and Robert Archibald in the paint. The perimeter features more interesting matchups, with Euroleague assists leader Omar Cook of Unicaja against scoring machine Lynn Greer and all-everything bench star Theodoros Papaloukas of Olympiacos likely to butt heads with Thomas Kelati, a shooter and defender who has starred for the hosts lately. If Cabezas and Rodriguez are truly ready to play again, the home crowd in Malaga will be even more pumped up for what should be a heady clash of styles between two deans of European coaching in midseason.

GAME QUOTES

Unicaja
  • Guard Omar Cook has dished at least 5 assists in each of his last three games and now leads the Euroleague with 5.5 assists per game this season.
  • Center Boniface NDong has scored in double figures in all six games so far this season. Last year, he reached double figures only six times in 19 appearances.
  • Center Robert Archibald recorded season highs of 15 points and 7 rebounds in the Week 2 meeting against Olympiacos.
  • Guard Thomas Kelati made a season-high 5 three-pointers against Olympiacos earlier this season. Kelati leads the Euroleague this season with 18 three-pointers made.
Olympiacos
  • Guard Yotam Halperin needs just 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Center Nikola Vujcic needs 10 more points to reach the 2,000-point plateau. Only four players have accomplished that feat to date – Marcus Brown, Luis Scola, J.R. Holden and Jaka Lakovic.
  • Center Sofoklis Schortsanitis has averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 fouls drawn in just 22 minutes per game against Unicaja in his Euroleague career.
  • Big man Ioannis Bourousis recorded season highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds as Olympiacos defeated Unicaja 83-72 in Week 2.
  • Head coach Panagiotis Giannakis and counterpart Aito Garcia Reneses will meet each other for third time in the last four months. They were opponents in the Olympic Tournament in Beijing, where Spain beat Greece and in the first leg of the Euroleague regular season, with Olympiacos downing Unicaja Malaga.
  • Olympiacos and Unicaja played an unforgettable Euroleague match in Malaga on January, 24, 1996. The Reds survived in overtime, 76-77, with David Rivers netting 23 points, while Nacho Rodriguez posted 20 points. During the last time out Milan Tomic, who is now assistant coach with Olympiacos, was involved in a fight with a Spanish TV cameraman and was taken to a local police station.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"The game against Olympiacos will be very interesting and very difficult, because we play against the most powerful team, theoretically, in our group. We also have the difficulty of waiting to see how well our injured players will be on their return, although logically we can't expect them to be at their best. The fact of players returning from injury usually carries with it the problem of those who were playing all along often lose a bit of form because they are thinking that others can play now, but we hope that won't be the case and that each will think solely about doing his maximum for the team."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We are facing a very good team that likes to run the court and put great pressure on its opponents defensively. The control of the game rhythm in combination with avoiding turnovers and nervousness are the key points that can help us accomplish our goal. The recent injuries of two important players like Panagiotis Vasilopoulos and Zoran Erceg reduce our possibilities, but with the highest concentration possible, we can get what we want from this game."

Players

RODRIGUEZ, BERNI
Unicaja
"As it stands now, I can dress tomorrow and be available to the coach. With luck, I'll play my first minutes of the season. The truth is I am very excited and I can't wait. My ankle doesn't hurt at all now. I have to keep getting in shape, because this is kind of my personal preseason, and little by little I need to get up to game rhythm. To come back for this game against Olympiacos is great, too, especially since our team is playing well, we have a streak going and this game can be a beautiful one. We will have our chances to win against Olympiacos because our numbers playing at home go in our favor, as does our play this season."
BOUROUSIS, IOANNIS
Olympiacos
"Unicaja Malaga is an excellent team that is in perfect shape right now. That means we have to give our best performance yet in order to leave Spain with a great result. About our injuries, I can't remember a season that we didn't have problems to solve all the time. Meanwhile, our opponents have faced significant problems, too, which they managed to overcome by playing at the highest level. That is exactly what we have to do in Malaga. We have to play as a team and show our best selves to beat such a good team on the road."
Thomas Kelati - UnicajaDespite trailing for three quarters of a defensive war, Unicaja forged a three-way tie for first place in Group A when it outlasted visiting Olympiacos 60-56 before 10,000 happy fans in Malaga, Spain on Wednesday. Unicaja took its first lead of the game on the last play of the third quarter but had to overcome several more ties, the last at 54-54 with under 4 minutes left, after which the hosts held Olympiacos to just 2 points. The victory meant that both teams are now 5-2 and tied for first place with Cibona, which won earlier in the evening, while Olympiacos missed a chance to clinch a Top 16 spot. Thomas Kelati was the only player for the winners to reach double digits in scoring, with 16 points, including insurance free throws with 18 seconds left. Unicaja got a huge lift from Carlos Cabezas as he returned from a recent injury to score 9 points in 12 minutes. Olympiacos, which enjoyed a couple of double-digit leads with stifling defense before halftime, got 12 points each from Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Georgios Printezis, while Ioannis Bourousis added 10.

Georgios Printezis flew to the rim to dunk a miss by Greer for Olympiacos before Cook fed Archibald for a fastbreak dunk to tie 2-2. Greer saved a possession late with an acrobatic layup and Vujacic assisted a cutting Teodosic as the guests went up 2-7. Unicaja went back inside to Archibald, whose next basket was matched quickly by Childress. Kelati's stop-and-pop three-pointer pleased the crowd, but Printezis joined the Olympiacos parade ot the basket. Welsch's inventive drive and Cook's mid-range jumper forged an 11-11 tie, but Childress assisted a layup by Vujcic, who then blocked Welsch at the other end. Schortsanitis entered and immediately upped the Olympiacos lead to 11-15. A pinball-like series of blocks and steals at both ends ended with Papaloukas scoring on the break, but Joseph Gomis answered for Unicaja. And when Bourousis went for an acrobatic three-point tip-in-plus-free throw, Cook found Kelati in the corner to beat the buzzer and trim the Olympiacos lead to 17-20 after 10 minutes.

Georgios Printezis - OlympiacosA quiet minute to start the second quarter ended with a noisy Schortsianits stealing at one end and scoring at the other for the Reds. Paul Shirley responded with a triple to keep Unicaja within 19-22. With baskets hard to come by, Bourousis assisted a layup by Schortsianitis, who soon got to the line and made both chances for the biggest lead yet, 19-26. The Olympiacos defense was completely shutting down the hosts now, while Papaloukas waltzed inside to feed Bourousis and force a Unicaja timeout. Greer added a free throw for a double-digit lead, 19-29, as Unicaja's offensive problems approached crisis proportions despite Haislip returning after two games missed with injury and quickly drawing two fouls. After Printezis drove for a layup, Unicaja was desperate for someone to step up, and that someone was Carlos Cabezas, also back from injury, who drilled a triple from the wing. Defense betrayed the hosts, however, as Papaloukas scored and assisted Printezis. Cabezas inspired the crowd with another triple, but Olympiacos remained in control at 28-35.

Kelati lifted the crowd's spirits with a jumper to open the second half. After Schortsianitis again made scoring look easy inside, Kelati buried a triple to give Unicaja new momentum. Cook next fed Shirley for a layup to draw the hosts within 35-39, but Childress skied for an offensive rebound that he turned into a three-point play for Olympiacos. Carlos Jimenez answered for Unicaja this time, hitting long from the corner to make it a two-point game again, 38-40. Another mix of blocks and turnovers stalled the scoring for more than 2 minutes until Boniface Ndong hooked in a shot to tie at 40-40 after 26 minutes. Vujcic hit his first complete pair of free throws all night to put Olympiacos back in front, but Ndong hooked anew for another tie. Printezis returned with a quick turnaround bank shot, but Ndong blocked and Cabezas went coast to coast to make it 44-44. Unicaja finally seized its first lead of the game as Welsch's turnaround in the lane made it a 46-44 scoreboard after 30 minutes.

Although Ndong denied him at the rim to start the final quarter, Childress put back the rebound for a new tie, 46-46. Cabezas stirred the fans again by hitting a short jumper and the extra free throw for Unicaja's first lead of the game, 49-46. When Welsch fed Ndong for an open fastbreak dunk, the turnaround was a fact. Now it was the Reds who couldn't score, as Cook fed Shirley in the post to make it 53-46. Olympiacos needed a timeout, after which Schortsianitis entered and got to the line, where he ended his team's four-minute scoring drought. Archibald hit 1 of 2 free throws at 54-48, but an offensive rebound led to a three-point basket-plus-free throw by Bourousis. Another in a series of second-chance possessions let Papaloukas bury the game-tying triple at 54-54 with under 4 minutes remaining. Archibald got a free throw out of his next battle with Schortsianitis, and that held up until Welsch added another to make it 56-54 with 2 minutes left. Bourousis forged yet another tie by putting back a Childress miss, setting up a thriller ending. Archibald now put back a miss by Kelati, and that held up as a 58-56 lead going into the final minute. After a timeout, Olympiacos missed a pair of shots on the same possession, and then had to foul. Kelati nailed both his free throws with 17.9 seconds left, good for a four-point lead, 60-56. Olympiacos tried for a two-pointer that Greer missed and Unicaja ran out the clock to join the first-place tie in Group A.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Unicaja
"If there's something that made me mad about this game, it's that we started at a slow rhythm that favored Olympiacos. They are masters at walking the ball up the floor, and we stayed in that dynamic both on defense and offense. In the second half, though, it was the opposite. The rhythm was our rhythm, we were running and rebounding, and that changed a game that was very difficult for us. Schortsanitis played a great game and hurt us a lot, but we had Cabezas and Haislip back, and they helped us a lot. The best thing is that winning today gives us a great chance to qualify for the Top 16."
GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"It's a pleasure to be here in Malaga. You can tell that these fans love there team, and when that happens, I have a lot of respect for them. The game has been very interesting. We came out very focused, but after the half, we committed various errors and let Unicaja get closer. In the second half, they pressured us and the details made the difference. We learned a lot. We have young players and this was a lesson for the future."

Players

ARCHIBALD, ROBERT
Unicaja
"I am satisfied, because this victory has been important for us to qualify for the next phase with confidence, and to have confidence against the big teams. We tried to play at a higher rhythm, have better pressure on defense and better fastbreaks, and we did so above all in the second half, when we played much better. Schortsanitis is very strong and moves very well. He knows how to win position down low and is dangerous and difficult to defend."
