THE TAKE

The Top 16 aspirations of historic teams from two European capitals clash on Thursday in Rome, Italy, where Lottomatica hosts Cibona with their survival in Group B at stake. Cibona (6-7) need only to win in order to advance to the Top 16, and may do so from as high as third place, depending on other results. Cibona can also advance in defeat, if it loses by less than 14 points and Unicaja downs Partizan. In that case, Cibona would be fifth in a three-way tie with Roma and Partizan. Roma (5-8) must win by at least 14 points and haveĀ Unicaja beat Partizan to finish fifth and move automatically to the next stage due to a three-way tie between Roma, Cibona and Partizan. If Roma doesn't win by at least 14, it has no chance to finish among the best five in the group. Both Roma, if wins by fewer than 14 points, and Cibona, if it loses, could also be in the hunt for the best sixth-place finish - the last ticket to the Top 16, since Eldo Napoli (6-8, -61) lost on Wednesday. The last time these two teams met, Chris Warren scored 22 and Brent Wright erupted for 17 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks to lead Cibona to a 91-84 overtime home win. Wright (12.2 ppg., 7.7 rpg.) has struggled a bit lately, particularly on the road, where he has shot 1-for-10 from the field in his last two games. Starting center Marton Bader and reserves Luksa Andric and Jurica Zuza will all need to do their part to help Wright and create an effective frontline against their Roma counterparts, led by Ognjen Askrabic (8.1 ppg., 5.2 rpg.), Loukas Mavrokefalides and Luca Garri. Dejan Bodiroga (14 ppg., 2.7 apg.) remains the focal point of the Roma attack, but the scoring is now divided among guards Mire Chatman (10.4 ppg., 2.6 spg.), David Hawkins (14.4 ppg., 2.8 spg.) and sweet-shooting Alex Righetti (8.1 ppg.). Cibona counters with playmaker Davor Kus (13.9 ppg., 3.1 apg.), Andrew Wisniewski (12 ppg.) and Warren (13.9 ppg., 5 rpg.). There will be a lot of pressure on the visiting guard trio, who needs to get Wright and Bader involved while going against the team that leads the league in steals (15.5 spg.). Psychologically, the 14-point cushion could hurt Cibona, which will not only need to surive in order to make the Top 16, but could boost its confidence going forward with a first road win of the season. Something similar could be said for Roma, which could cap a big comeback to make the next round with a lot of momentum. All of which makes for a sure thriller in the Italian capital on Thursday.

Quotes Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Our chances of qualifying to the Top 16 not only depend on what we do against Cibona but on the other results in our group. It's going to be a very difficult game but we believe that we can do it. Cibona will also be fighting for a place in the next round, so it's going to be a battle. The important thing for us is to play well, to give a good image in our last group game and then wait and see what happens. My team has been able to rest after a difficult week in which we had three games on the road and now we are ready for this crucial game."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"I can see that my players are really optimistic, but I would like to congratulate them on the six victories we have achieved until now. I think not many people expected that we were going to have six wins and a chance to go directly through to the Top 16 with the sixth one. The game in Rome is one of those games that make basketball great: it is a pure pleasure to play such games. Lottomatica, compared to our game in Zagreb, has Askrabic, but I think Cibona also has not shown our maximum yet. So, both teams have room for improvement: it is just a question of who will use the momentum on Thursday. Our goal is to play our best and then we can hope that good things happen. I think there is not a single team in Europe at the moment that could say, 'We are traveling to Rome and we are going to win there for sure'."

GARRI, LUCA

"We know that we have to beat Cibona by at least a 14-point margin and hope that Unicaja wins in Belgrade against Partizan in order to qualify for the Top 16. Cibona will make life difficult for us because they also need a win in order to progress to the next round. It does put a lot of pressure on us, but then again, considering our poor start to the campaign in this competition, in the past month we have been accustomed to dealing with this kind of pressure. We know we have to play a great game against Cibona."
KUS, DAVOR
Cibona
"It looks like six wins will not be enough to go through to the Top 16 this year. The good thing is that we have our destiny in our hands, so if we win, no one can take it away from us: we go into the Top 16. Lottomatica played really aggressive in the first game in Zagreb and I think it will be even more obvious in Rome. Coach Repesa knows us very well, but we also know him, so there will probably not be any surprises. We just have to give everything we have on the court and hope it will be enough for success."
Mire Chatman - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica Roma advanced to the Top 16! Roma will continue fighting for Euroleague glory by thrashing Cibona 81-58 in the Italian capital on Thursday night. Roma needed to win by at least 14 points and wait for Unicaja get a road win in Belgrade to force a three-way tie for the fifth place with Cibona and Partizan, all with a 6-8 record. According to the first tie-break procedures, victories obtained in the games played only between all teams tied, Roma (2-2, +11) was fifth, Partizan (2-2, -3) sixth and Cibona (2-2, -8) seventh and therefore out of the Top 16. Mire Chatman led the winners with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. David Hawkins added 17 points while Dejan Bodiroga and Loukas Mavrokefalidis each had 11 for Roma. Brent Wright had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Cibona. Chris Warren and Andrew Wisniewski each added 11 while Davor Kus tallied 10 for the guests. Roma used an 11-0 run to get a 66-43 margin after three quarters and kept a safe margin to do its job in order to qualify. Everybody had to wait in front of the TV until Unicaja downed Partizan 90-94 in overtime to seal its ticket to the next round.

Both teams had a nervour start as Warren picked up an early offensive foul for Cibona and Ognjen Askrabic missed both free throws after getting fouled by Kus. Hawkins changed things by burying a triple to start the scoreboard, then Bodiroga assisted Alessandro Tonolli for a layup. Marton Bader finally got Cibona on the board with a strong layup, but Chatman drove easily to make it 7-2. Warren joined the scoring with a free throw and a triple that made it 7-6 before Bodiroga replied with a one-handed layup and Chatman scored again to make it 11-6 up after 5 minutes. Kus drove for an easy layup and then Luksa Andric scored won low as Cibona cut the difference to 13-10. Askrabic missed another pair of free throws but made amends by stepping out to nail a three-pointer. When Bodiroga copied him, Roma was running away at 19-10. Kus answerd for Cibona from the arc, while Wisniewski and Wright each made 1 of 2 free throws. Askrabic then assisted Luca Garri's two-handed dunk and Hawkins made both his free throws as Roma led 23-17 after one quarter.

Chatman started the second quarter strong a three-point play and a steal which made Cibona call timeout. Warren beat the shot clock with a tough jumper but a layup by Alex Righetti and a fast break basket off a steal by Chatman made it an 11-point game, 30-19. Even when Marton Bader dunked it, Hawkins improved it with a layup-plus-foul for a 33-21 Roma margin. Four more points by Hawkins allowed Roma to reach the desired 14-point margin, 37-23. Cibona kept looking for points around the basket, but Hawkins dunked it off a steal while Bodiroga made free throws for a 41-23 Roma lead after 17 minutes. Krasic scored in the lane and Wisniewski followed with a layup. Askrabic added another two before Chatman found Bodiroga for a 44-27 score.Marin Rozic made free throws but Hawkins - who else? - answered from downtown to make it 47-29. Free throws by Wisniewski and an easy basket by Wright brought Cibona within 47-33 at halftime.

Andrew Wisniewski - CibonaCibona kept struggling to score after the break, as Roma was virtually everywhere in defense. Meanwhile, Alessandro Tonolli and Chatman nailed consecutive bombs from downtown to boost Roma's lead to 53-33. Cibona was not done, however, as Wisniewski joined the three-point festival before Wright went in for a layup to get the guests going. By the time Warren stepped up with a fast break layup and Wright added a free throw, Cibona was within 53-41, after a 0-8 run. Hawkins rescued Cibona with a jumper and soon added free throws for a 55-41 score after 26 minutes. Kus fed Marijan Mance down low for a layup but Righetti answered with a three-pointer to give Roma a 58-43 lead. Even when Askrabic picked up his fourth foul, Luca Garri stepped up with a tip-in. Chatman shined with a three-pointer while Righetti added his own shot from downtown to cap a 11-0 run which gave the hosts a 66-43 lead after three quarters.

Krasic tried to ignit the Cibona comeback with a jump shot and Kus fired in a three-pointer to get the guests within 67-48. Roma did not lose control, however, as Mavrokefalides hit a jumper but Wisniweski bettered it with a layup-plus-foul to get Cibona even closer, 69-51, with 7 minutes to go. Chatman copied him in the other end, forcing Cibona to call timeout at 72-51. Cibone kept struggling in offense, even missing free throws. Roma did not do much better now, but a hook shot by Mavrokefalidis gave the hosts a safe 76-52 lead with 4 minutes remaining. Mavrokefalidis followed free throws with a layup, and even when Wright cut the deficit to 80-56, time was running out for Cibona. Roma let the clock run down, drawing cheers from the fans at PalaLottomatica as as they clinched an 81-58 triumph. The margin of victory was enough for Roma to reach the Top 16, but on the other hand did not allow Cibona to stay in the competition.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"My players have given their hearts tonight on the court. We fully merited this win. We had never faced such a difficult situation as this one, where we had to win by at least 14 points. I am saddened for Cibona because it is my home, but this is life. To have reached the Top 16 gives us great satisfaction and a big morale boost for our campaign. I have to congratulate Unicaja Malaga for their win. I suffered watching the final minutes of their game, but in the end they got a very good win in Belgrade and more importantly for us, the result we needed."
ANZULOVIC, DRAZEN
Cibona
"My team struggled mentally tonight. When you have 25 turnovers and you haven't got one single player who played well, you cannot expect to have a good result. I think the fact that we have won six games in the competition is a good result for my team. The regret is that we had a chance to go to the Top 16 if only we had played much better. I hope this defeat will in some way motivate my players. We are first in the Adriatic league and we have the Croatian competition. I congratulated Jasmin, he has a better team than us and I am happy that at least his team has gone through. I am very surprised that Unicaja won, even though they have one of the best teams. On a hot court in Belgrade, Partizan is always favorite so well done to Malaga."

Players

CHATMAN, MIRE
Lottomatica Roma
"I knew I had to be aggressive for my team tonight and I am very happy to have contributed to our victory with 19 points. It feels good for me personally to have helped this team reach the Top 16. I came to Roma midway through the season when things weren't going that well for the team. But we picked ourselves up and we have achieved our aim. Now we want to try to do our best in our next European games. We know it's going to be difficult because in comparison to other teams we are smaller, but we just have to stay aggressive and use our speed."
KUS, DAVOR
Cibona
"We have played the worst game of the season tonight and we don't deserve to be in the Top 16. We knew before the game that it would be a very difficult game, but we didn't approach it well. We knew that Roma can play good basketball, but we were surprised by how badly we played. Now we must look ahead, we have next weekend a cup game and we have another chance to make amends for our fans."
