THE TAKE

Maccabi Elite will host its final game of the Top 16 on Thursday when Dejan Bodiroga and Lottomatica Roma come to town for their last Euroleague appearance this season. The game will have no effect on the standings as Maccabi (3-2) has already clinched a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs, where it will face CSKA Moscow in another chapter of their ongoing rivavly. Roma (1-4) cannot qualify for the next stage but will try to finish third in the group with a victory. The teams have met three times already this season, with Maccabi winning twice, including a 69-71 victory in their first Top 16 game last month in the Italian capital. Maccabi could have a depleted squad for the game, as guard Will Bynum may be out for personal reasons while all-Euroleague center Nikola Vujcic has a thigh injury and is in doubt. That doesn't mean that Maccabi will be any less dangerous, as a number of players will be eager to use extra minutes to prove themselves to coach Neven Spahija ahead of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Roma is led by the legendary Bodiroga (13.6 ppg.), who always seems to rise to the occasion when visiting Tel Aviv. The backcourt of Mire Chatman (10.9 ppg., 2.6 apg., 2.5 spg.) and David Hawkins (13.6 ppg., 2.4 spg.) thrive in the open style of play they can expect against Maccabi. For Maccabi, which is 8-1 at home this season, Tal Burstein (8.3 ppg., 48.1% 3FG) and Simas Jasaitas (10.2 ppg.) have both been in fine form lately. Each of the encounters between these teams this season have been hard-fought and exciting affairs and this one should be no different. Maccabi rookie Lior Eliyahu (11.9 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) and Bodiroga can be expected to provide some highlights as both teams look to finish the Top 16 in style.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"Everybody knows the score tomorrow doesn't matter for both teams, because we already qualified to the next round and Roma has no chance, but that doesn't mean we don't want to win. We need to stay in shape for the next games, so we must play a good game. We can't underestimate this game, because that will hurt our preparations for CSKA. We are Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv and our goal is always to win, in any game. We want to improve the small things because that will help us in the future. Will Bynum will be missed so Yotam Halperin will get a chance. I believe he's playing with much more confidence lately."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"It is a pity that we are not going to Tel Aviv for our last Top 16 game with the qualification at stake. Maccabi are already through to the quarterfinals and we will try to honor the competition and give a good image in our last Euroleague game this season. The team bounced back from our elimination from the Euroleague with a crucial domestic win against Montespaschi Siena, and that was important. To have reached the Top 16 was our aim and what we wanted this season, so we must be optimistic. We know Maccabi well, having already played against them several times this season. We beat Maccabi earlier this season but it is going to be a difficult game in Tel Aviv."

Players

HALPERIN, YOTAM
Maccabi Elite
"I grew up in Maccabi, and we learn from a very early age to never lose hunger and always to win in any game. The fact that the result won't influence the standings doesn't matter. Maccabi always wants to win, especially at Nokia Arena. Our wonderful fans deserve to see us win and that's what we'll try to do tomorrow. We'll try to use this game to improve what we work on towards the quarterfinals against CSKA. It's a good chance to do it, and the fact we won't play under big pressure will help."
BODIROGA, DEJAN
Lottomatica Roma
"We are satisfied with what we have done this season in the Euroleague. To have reached the Top 16 was an achievement for us. We have played against top teams and this has been a good experience for Roma. We hope that against Maccabi we can remain in the game just as we did against Tau and maybe end our Euroleague adventure this season with a good result."
Derrick Sharp - Maccabi Elite Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv topped Lottomatica Roma 79-72 on Thursday night at Nokia Arena to finish the Top 16 in style ahead of its Quarterfinal Playoffs matchup with defending champion CSKA Moscow. Inspired play from reserve big man Jamie Arnold led the hosts to their third win over Roma this season as the Israeli champs finished Group D with a 4-1 record. Roma dropped its fifth in a row to end its Euroleague campaign with a 1-5 mark in the Top 16. Arnold finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds, Yotam Halperin added 14 points and 4 assists, Nikola Vujcic scored 13 and Derrick Sharp 11. Roma, playing without its usual starting backcourt of Mire Chatman and David Hawkins, enjoyed a big night from Alex Righetti, who posted a Euroleague career-high 25 points – including 5 three-pointers – before fouling out with 2 minutes remaining. Dejan Bodiroga, who received plenty of applause from the Maccabi fans, finished with 14. The visitors kept the game close throughout the first half, leading 12-19 after 10 minutes and with Maccabi up just 36-35 at halftime. But Arnold got some help from Goran Jeretin during a 13-3 third-quarter run to put Maccabi comfortably in front. Righetti and Roma fought hard down the stretch, but Halperin stepped up with a clutch triple with 35 seconds left to seal the win.

Bodiroga got things started for Roma with a basket on the offensive glass, but Halperin, starting as part of a new-look backcourt for Maccabi, evened the score from the line. The hosts tried to force the tempo, but Lottomatica's effective zone and the visitors' calculated attack slowed down the game. Baskets by Jacopo Giachetti and then Righetti in transition put Roma up 2-6. Righetti went on to drill a pair of threes that increased the lead to 7. Maccabi's points all came from the line until Halperin hit a pull-up jumper after 7+ minutes to make it 10-14. Bodiroga split through Halperin and Sharp for a bucket and a foul. Arnold's mid-range jumper was matched by Luca Garri inside. Goran Jeretin coughed up the ball, but Roma failed to take advantage as the first period ended with the visitors up 12-19.

Jacopo Giachetti - Lottomatica RomaRoberto Gabini opened the second period with a bank shot and Daniele Cinciarini followed with a triple to put Roma up 12. Sharp answered from downtown and Arnold stepped up on defense by swatting Giachetti to get the fans going. Tal Burstein buried a jumper, but Gabini beat the shot clock on the other end to keep his team in control. Vujcic and Lior Eliyahu each added two from the line and Burstein fed Vujcic underneath to close the gap to 3. Righetti remained hot with a long-range jumper and a triple, but Sharp hit from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions to bring Maccabi within 29-31. After a timeout, Bodiroga drained a jumper over Eliyahu, but Halperin kept Maccabi in the picture. Vujcic made it a one-point game from the line, but Giachetti made a pair of free throws at the other end. Eliyahu again cut the cap to 1 and Halperin gave Maccabi its first lead with a fine penetration and that's how it remained at the break, with the hosts ahead 36-35.

Halperin fed Eliyahu for a slam to get Maccabi headed in the right direction at the start of the second half. Baskets by Sharp and Vujcic followed as the hosts took a 42-35 lead. Righetti remained the main offensive weapon for Roma and his fourth three-pointer of the nigh gave the visitors hope. However Halperin came right back with a three as Tel Avuv threatened to break the game open. Vujcic put Maccabi up 9 and then Jeretin stepped up, sandwiching a layup and a triple around a Righetti layup for a 54-42 lead. Jeretin added one more free throw and Arnold converted a circus shot in the paint to cap a 13-3 run and give Maccabi a 15-point advantage. Free throws by Alessandro Tonolli and Jon Stefansson for Roma and Arnold for Maccabi saw the third quarter draw to a close with the hosts ahead 60-47.

Lior Elihayu - Maccabi EliteOgnjen Askrabic picked up a loose ball in the paint for an easy basket, but Arnold remained solid at the other end with a pair of baskets. Giachetti hit from downtown and after a Burstein jumper, Bodiroga came through with a three. Righetti's fifth triple of the night gave him a career-high in points and brought Roma within 66-58. After a Maccabi timeout, Roma forced a turnover and Righetti dropped in a layup in transition. Yaniv Green scored his first points of the game from the line and after a rare Righetti miss from outside, Jeretin's two free throws put Maccabi ahead by 10 again. More free throws, this time from Burstein, seemed to put the game out of reach with less than three minutes to play, prompting the Maccabi fans to chant “Bodiroga” in honor of the legendary Serbian, who may have played his last game at Nokia Arena. Roma made one last effort to get back and after a timeout, Stefansson earned a goal-tending call and Righetti scored off a steal. But Righetti picked up his fifth foul trying to stop Arnold at the other end and with him gone, Roma was in trouble. Still Stefansson found a way to cut the gap to 4, but Halperin hit a big triple with 35 seconds left to seal the win.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Maccabi Elite
"I'd like to congratulate my team for one more win. It was very important for us to win the game. Vujcic's return is very important for us. They shot very well for three points, and we made many turnovers, and it didn't give us a chance to run better and play more for the crowd. We knew that when they start to play without Hawkins and Chatman it's very difficult for them to play for 40 minutes against us. We won the second place before the end of the Top16 and this is a good result for us. It's a realistic result because Tau is a better team than us."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
“Congratulations to Maccabi for the win. They deserve it 100% and I with them good luck in the quarterfinals. I am satisfied with how we played. In the second and third quarters, we let them play their game and you can't beat Maccabi at home when you let them play like that. We can't compare tonight's game with any other because it was like a friendly, since Maccabi already qualified and we are thinking about our next domestic game.”

Players

ELIYAHU, LIOR
Maccabi Elite
“As far as we're concerned, even games that have no real value are important for our confidence. CSKA will be a completely different story. We need to change pace. We have players with amazing abilities and every one of them needs to give more in order to win in the next stage.”
BODIROGA, DEJAN
Lottomatica Roma
"The cheers from the fans touched me. It was very exciting to hear it, especially from the fans of Maccabi that know basketball and I know them for many years. After so many years and so many games. I still don't know if it was my last game here."
