THE TAKE

A visitor in dire need of a Group C victory faces a host who rarely loses at home when Benetton Basket welcomes Fenerbahce Ulker to Treviso, Italy on Wednesday at 20:45 CET. Benetton (1-1) has been almost unbeatable recently in PalaVerde, where it has won its last eight Euroleague games. Its last home loss came almost a year ago, on November 30, 2005, when Tau Ceramica won in Treviso. Benetton (1-1) beat Zalgiris Kaunas in Treviso to start this season before losing against Winterthur FCB last week. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce Ulker (0-2) is still looking for its first win after back-to-back losses against Aris TT Bank and Pau-Orthez, so it comes as no surprise that this is already a do-or-die game for the guests. Fenerbahce's main concern will be stopping Marcus Goree, the ninth-best scorer in the competition, who has been leading Benetton yet again this season. Goree leads a solid backcourt featuring Angelo Gigli, versatile forward Spencer Nelson and center Joey Beard, who will test his rebounding skills against the best specialist in Euroleague basketball history. Once again, Mirsad Turkcan is the top rebounder of the competition despite playing in a froncourt with players ready to power the boards such as Kaspars Kambala, Ira Clark or Oguz Savas. Benetton will be without Richie Frahm, so Terrell Lyday, Nikos Zisis and Matteo Soragna will have an extended role on offense. Zisis and Lyday are set to share most of the minutes at both guard spots, with Matt Santangelo ready to come off the bench. Both players will face a solid backcourt in which Will Solomon and Ibrahim Kutluay - who has been unstoppable so far - will play a major role. Slasher Omer Onan and top gun Damir Mrsic round out a deep Fenerbahce backcourt. Above all, Fenebahce will try to slow down the tempo and try to look for double team situations in the low post to give Kutluay more space in offense. As always, Benetton will play aggressive defense and its trademark run-and-gun offense. Expect nothing but a huge showdown, as the winner will take a crucial step in Group C.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"It's important to get back on the floor right after a loss with a good attitude and that's what we need to do Wednesday against Fenerbach Ulker. Despite the standings, they are an extremely competitive and experienced team, we must be focused, especially on defense and on the boards. We can't let them play their basketball. Winning at home is really important if you want to continue this great adventure as long as possible.”
ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"There's nothing much to say about Benetton Treviso, because everybody knows them very well. They have a good team, tradition in the Euroleague, a good gym and good basketball fans who know basketball well enough. I think we will play our hardest game yet. We hope to reduce our mistakes to the minimum, play as hard as we can and hold them off for 40 minutes."

Players

SORAGNA, MATTEO
Benetton Basket
"If you look at their roster, you realize that they are a really experienced team. They will try to play aggressive defense, so we have to be ready for a true battle to win that game. Even if we are missing one of our key players, we have to make up for by being focused on our goals from the start. If we get a good start, it will be much easier to win and take another step forward in the standings".
ONAN, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Benetton Treviso is one of the regular contenders in the Euroleague. For that reason, to play against a traditional Euroleague team in front of its own fans is not easy for us or for any team in this competition. We had a bad start to the season and are still searching for a win to feel better. This is not what we are and we just need an explosion to find ourselves. We know that we will have a very hard game in Treviso, but we also know that we will fight to win this game until the last minute."
Nikos Zisis - Benetton Treviso Benetton Treviso kept its homecourt safe again by taking care of a Group C showdown by rolling past Fenerbahce Ulker 93-83 on Wednesday. Thanks to a balanced game on all counts, Benetton raised its record to 2-1 while keeping Fenerbahce from its first Euroleague victory for a third consecutive week. With six players scoring in double digits and five dishing 3 or more assists, Benetton's was an all-inclusive victory. Marcus Goree and Nikos Zisis scored 17 points each, while Marco Mordente added 16, Spencer Nelson 13, Angelo Gigli and Matteo Soragna 11 each. Spencer added 10 rebounds, Goree 7 and Zisis 7 assists. Fenerbahce got 25 points out of Kaspars Kambala and 18 from Willie Solomon, but suffered from a 25-8 disadvantage in assists.

Kambala got Fenerbahce going first by forcing his way to the basket. Soon, after a three-pointer from Kutluay put Fenerbahce up 0-5, Benetton answered with quick buckets in the paint from Beard and Goree. Both teams kept going inside as Goree scored again and Kambala kept troubling the hosts, drawing consecutive fouls and coolly sinking free throws to make it 8-10. Matt Santangelo cut to the hoop to continue a series of ties. Kambala scored from the foul line again, Nelson dunked, Terrell Lyday made free throws, Omer Onan drove, Solomon hit a jumper and Zisis a layup until it was 18-18. That, however, is when Benetton let loose with a 5-0 spurt sparked by Mordente's first triple. When Spencer added a layup and his own shot from the arc, it was 28-20. Mordente would hit a second bomb, but Rasim Basak ended the quarter the same way to keep Fenerbahce as close as 31-27 after 10 minutes.

Kaspars Kambala - Fenerbahce UlkerWhen Damir Mrsic started the second quarter with a three-pointer, the visitors were within 31-30. Nelson dunked on the break, while Mordente launched his third strike from the arc and Zisis his first to keep Fenerbahce down until Gigli arrived with free throws to make it 41-32 for Benetton. That 8-0 run forced a Fenerbahce timeout, after which Ira Clark dunked and buried a catch-and-shoot three-pointer to bring Fenerbahce within 6 points at 43-37. Zisis and Soragna, who drew Kutluay's third foul, restored a nine-point cushion at 46-37 for Benetton, but Solomon soon cut it by a three-pointer and Onan hit a layup to make it a four-point game, 48-44. Zizis was now the answer man for Benetton, with a three-pionter that Soragna copied to forge a double-digit difference at 54-44. Goree closed the half with 4 points in the final minute to put Benetton fully in charge at 58-44.

The third quarter saw both teams struggled to find the basket until Mrsic broke the ice with a corner triple and Onan followed with a fastbreak basket that cut the difference to single digits, 58-49. Spencer came back on with immediate impact, rebounding and scoring on the resulting attack. Kambala caught fire again, however, dunking twice to force a Benetton timeout as the lead was melting like ice to 60-55. After Zizis and Solomon traded 2 points each, Mordente got the Treviso crowd involved with his fourth triple of the night. Kambala kept Fenerbahce within 6 points with free throws, while Gigli triple was answered with a spectacular dunk from young pivot Semih Erden. Gilgi stayed hot as he drilled a mid-range jumper and slammed to make it 72-63. Kambala's free throw and a Solomon triple kept Fenerbahce hoping until Soragna hooked in a buzzer-beater to give Benetton extra breathing room at 74-67 after 30 minutes.

Oguz Savas tried to ignite a comeback for Aris with a power play to start the final quarter, and when Erdin drilled a three to beat the shot clock, it was a whole new ball game at 74-72. Goree stepped up and saved Benetton with free throws and a jumper, but Kambala answered with a layup. The tension was high before Goree all but settled matters with a triple that supplied a new nine-point edge, 83-74 with 6 minutes left. A series of free throws followed that only served to bring Fenerbahce a couple points closer, at 85-78, after which a steal by Mordente sent Soragna for an easy layup. Fenerbahce's full court press did not keep Goree from showing the way for the hosts to a 89-81 scoreboard with 2 minuts left. Benetton allowed no easy shots now, and in so doing, cruised to its second Group C victory.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"We managed to play our style of game, look for good solutions on offense and get everybody involved, that’s what we have done. Angelo Gigli is getting better every day, he works very hard every day, he’s got high motivation. He’s got good coaches who improve him technically and physically. He’s doing the work and I am happy about that."
ORS, AYDIN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Congratulations to Benetton and coach Blatt. We tried every kind of defense possible against their offense we could not seem to find the answer and when you concede 58 points in one half, that is way too much. We used Kambala very well, which enabled us to score 44 points in the half, which is quite good. In the second half we defended more physically and it worked better but the 58 points in the first half were too much."
