THE TAKE

Unics Kazan and EWE Baskets Oldendburg meet Tuesday at the Basket Hall in a duel that has them both still looking at the Last 16, but from opposite standpoints. With Unics leading Group A at 3-1 after its victory at Le Mans last week and EWE Baskets down 1-3 after losing at Banvit BK, the home team knows a victory sends the club into the Last 16, while EWE needs a victory to stay alive. Kazan’s big trio was in fine form lat week as big man Maciej Lampe made 11 of 15 shots for 23 points, Terrell Lyday followed with 19 points and 6 assists and Marko Popovic had 17 and 7. The three were also in excellent form when Unics routed Oldenburg 72-89 on opening night. One of head coach Evgeny Pashutin’s main weapons is depth in the middle, with Vladimir Veremeenko, Slavko Vranes and Hasan Rizvic teaming with Lampe and to provide scoring, rebounding and blocks. Offensive balance is more of an issue for Oldenburg in respect to last week’s loss, as center Aron Baynes and guard Rickey Paulding scored 21 points each, but no other player had even half that amount. Newly-signed point guard Eddie Gill will take the Oldenburg reins and try to spark the attack this week. For EWE Baskets to contend with Unics’s potent frontcourt, head coach Predrag Krunic will need center Oliver Stevic to rebound from an off night against Banvit, and a stronger performance from multi talented forward Mindaugas Lukauskis, who was limited to 7 points in 40 minutes last week. He won’t have it easy against Kelly McCarty, who offers Unics plenty of punch at the forward position. On the perimeter, Popovic’s range is always a threat for Unics, and guard Louis Campbell will have to keep him in check if Oldenburg wants to keep its Last 16 chances intact.

Terrell Lyday - UNICSUnics Kazan advanced to the Eurocup Last 16 on Tuesday by downing EWE Baskets Oldenburg 88-64 in Group A. A 13-1 run bridging the first two quarters changed the momentum, giving a 30-19 advantage to the home team and Kazan was able to extend it to 43-29 late in the second quarter. Terrell Lyday made it 58-42 and a late 6-0 spurt put the hosts in a security zone on 64-46. Lyday led the way for the home team with 25 points as Unics improved to 4-1. Maciej Lampe amassed a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds, Kelly McCarty added 12 points and Igor Zamanskiy had 10. Chris McNaughton contributed 11 points for EWE Baskets and Oliver Stevic posted 10 with 9 rebounds. Oldenburg dropped to 1-4 and was mathematically eliminated from Last 16 contention.

Stevic and Aron Bynes combined for 7 points to give an early 3-7 advantage to the visitors, before a put-back from Lampe tied the score at 7-7. Louis Campbell hit a mid-range jumper to make it 9-13. Lyday pushed Unics ahead 14-13 with 5 points in a row. McNaughton tied things again at 17-17 before McCarty completed a three-point-play for a 24-19 scored at the end of the first quarter. Lyday remained on fire early in the second and helped by Zamankiy, Kazan raised the difference for the first time to double digits, 30-19. Rickey Paulding and Zakhar Pashutin traded baskets before Lyday and Hasan Rizvic increased the margin. Lampe further fueled Unics in the paint, and Lyday from beyond the arc to go to 40-27. Vladimir Veremeenko bagged a layup close to the halftime buzzer, but Baynes tried to keep EWE Baskets in the picture with back-to back basket to get within 47-36 at the intermission.

Mindaugas Lukauskis and Rizvic answered each other from mid range early in the second half. McCarty hit a three to up the lead to 52-40 and then Lyday confirmed his magic night for a 58-42 lead. Lukauskis did not give up and his dunk narrowed the gap to 12, but a 6-0 partial fueled by Lyday and Rizvic made it 64-48 for Unics and McCarty fixed the scoring at 66-49 after 10 minutes. A Ricky Minard layup increased the margin to over 20 points. Oldenburg newcomer Eddie Gill scored a layup, but Unics remained in control and Victor Zvarykin’s dunk made it 80-59 before Zamanskiy fixed the final 88-64 with a dunk at the buzzer.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics
"We prepared seriously for the match against EWE Baskets. Our idea was to make special emphasis with our defense against the main scorers of our opponents, such as Paulding and Lukauskis. One of our key players, Marco Popovic, had been injured seriously the previous match we played in the Russian League. We missed Popovic very much, and the rest of the players had to share his part to make up for his absence on the court. As a result, the team came together and we have found our team chemistry."
KRUNIC, PREDRAG
EWE Baskets
"I congratulate Unics on its deserved victory. They were better today. They played better offensively and defensively, while we suffered problems, especially in the first half. Lyday was unstoppable and scored many points. We didn't cope with him. In second half we felt better, but didn't manage to score on a number of open shots. We knew that it's not easy to play on this top level. To defeat such a good team as Unics we had to play safe offense and play aggressively on defense. I confess that we failed to do both. That's why we lost."

Players

McCARTY, KELLY
Unics
"We lost Popovic before the game, and that great loss has united all the players and made us show our sports character in the game. We are pleased we have won today."
