THE TAKE

Union Olimpija will make a last-ditch try to save its Euroleague season against an opponent, Unicaja, thinking almost in the same terms as these Group B teams face off on Wednesday at Tivoli Arena in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Olimpija (2-8) is in last place in Group B and must win in order to bridge the two-win gap that separates it from four teams tied for fourth place. One of those four teams is Unicaja (4-6), which cannot afford to lose to the last-place team of the group if it hopes to move to the next round. The Spanish Leagu champions held on for a 62-55 win when these teams met earlier this season at Malaga, as swingman Jiri Welsch led the way with 16 points against his old team. Center Daniel Santiago added 10 points and 9 rebounds in that game and will be key to Unicaja's hopes on Wednesday. Welsch, who was leading his team with 15.3 points per game after the first four games of the season, hasn't scored in double figures since and is averaging just 7 points in his last four games. Welsch is one of the main players that Unicaja will need to get going. Olimpija captain Marko Milic scored a season-low 6 points against Unicaja, but has been red-hot lately, averaging 17.8 points on 65.3% two-point shooting and 8.2 rebounds in his last five games. Unicaja (71.3 ppg.) and Olimpija (72.8 ppg.) are among the lowest scoring teams in the league. Unicaja's weakness is turnovers: its 18.7 giveaways per game being the most in the Euroleague. Olimpija is worst in the league in defensive rebounding (19.4 drpg.), something that Santiago (11.2 ppg., 4.8 rpg.) and Florent Pietrus will try to take advantage of. Berni Rodriguez (13.1 ppg., 3.1 apg.) is Unicaja's top scorer, with Carlos Cabezas (10.2 ppg.) the team's top perimeter threat. Milic (14.7 ppg.) shares the scoring burden with point guard Teemu Rannikko (13.6 ppg.), while guard Ender Arslan (9.5 ppg.), swingman Manuchar Markoishvili (9.4 ppg.) and big Ivica Jurkovic (9.1 ppg.) are all effective in their roles. Many of the matchups this game has to offer pit players with similar skills against one another, but one position where that's not the case is center, where the 2.16-meter Santiago boasts a significant height advantage over the Olimpija big men. At 2.10 meters, Olimpija's Hasan Rizvic will get the first crack at stopping the Unicaja big man. Olimpija, having proven numerous times that team spirit is the most valuable tool when hunting for wins, will look to show that once more in what promises to be a hard-fought Group B encounter in the Slovenian capital.

Quotes Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"A quality team that already beat us once this season is coming to Ljubljana. In that first game, especially in the second half, we found a successful formula. Against such a team, you can only come out good if you fight physically and don't let yourself be run over. Unicaja has begun 2007 well, beating Cibona and winning by a lot against Estudiantes in the Spanish League, but it's difficult to say which of us is favorite in Wednesday's game. Unicaja has more quality and more players available, while we play before our home crowd and on a court where it's not so easy to beat us. We'll have problems under the glass, so we'll need Marko Milic to help us in the battle against the big men of Unicaja."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"We have to keep progressing. We know we are playing on a difficult court against a team that is athletic, aggressive and, despite having won only two games so far, never gives up fighting in any game. We are aware of the importance of this game. We have to be fully concentrated and very attentive to the nuances of play because this is a game, we know, that contains a lot of our possibilities to take a big step toward qualification for the next round."

Players

MARKOISHVILI, MANUCHAR
Union Olimpija
"Unicaja has a good team with good players from everywhere, but mostly Spain and Argentina. Our biggest weapon is Tivoli Arena and our fans. We'll have to fight for every centimeter of the court, and with a collective and aggressive defense try to surprise our opponents. We are well award that we'll have to show another side of ourselves as compared to recent games if we want to win."
WELSCH, JIRI
Unicaja
"We are in a situation in which we cannot permit ourselves another loss. Obviously, we need to win if we wish to keep intact our options of qualifying for the Top 16. We are ready to face this game. We have to keep our concentration all 40 minutes. In our first game with Olimpija, we played very well the first half but lost some of our game in the second and were involved in a close finish. To win on the road, as well, we have to play good defense and for that reason we need to concentrate and work hard on the preparation of this game."
Ender Arslan - Union Olimpija Proving that it had never given up hope, last-place Union Olimpija of Group B gave its fans an unforgettable show when it blew out visiting Unicaja 87-59 on Wednesday. Olimpija started with a 12-0 run and never looked back as Marko Milic first and Teemu Rannikko later boosted the hosts to the win. Olimpija is now 3-8 in the standings in last place, but is suddenly only a victory away from sixth place. Unicaja dropped to 4-7, and either Partizan or Cibona will have the same record after they play on Thursday. Milic led the winners with 19 points, Rannikko and Ender Arslan posted 16 apiece and Ivica Jurkovic nailed 11 for the winners. For Unicaja, only Pepe Sanchez and Kostas Vasiliadis reached double figures with 13 points each. Union Olimpija dominated in rebounding by a 37-24 total and in assists by 15-2, while Unicaja made only 2 of 18 three-point tries.

The scoring started with a free throw by Manuchar Markoishvili, as Olimpija's defense was really aggressive from the tipoff. Unicaja struggled for decent shots as Milic finished off a fastbreak and hit more free throws to make it 5-0. As they couldn't pass into the paint, the guests had to shoot from outside and missed, while Milic hit another basket to boost the lead to 9-0. Between Markoishvili and Milic alone the score escalated to 12-0. Daniel Santiago finally scored for Unicaja with a nice move inside, which would turn out to be his sole basket of the game. Sanchez's offensive rebound allowed the guests to make it 14-4, but Milic was still on fire and soon had 9 points himself. Unicaja's defense got tighter now and Olimpija found it harder and harder to score as 2 free throws by Vasiliadis made it 18-11 after 10 minutes.

Pepe Sanchez - UnicajaAfter 2 scoreless minutes into the second quarter, Domen Lorbek finally made it 20-11 for Olimpija, which already enjoyed an 18-7 rebounding advantage. Unicaja was having little options to fight back. With Milic back on court now, Olimpija ran ahead 24-11 before Sanchez again broke the spell for his team. Carlos Cabezas joined in and when Unicaja started to defend better, those two managed to trim the deficit to 24-17. Lorbek reacted for the hosts, blasting a three-pointer, but Sanchez replied in the same way for a 27-22 scoreboard. The half was over, however, for Unicaja, while Olimpija kept playing witha 10-0 run in which Jurkovic scored the last 8 points on a triple, a three-point basket-plus-free throw and a buzzer-beating dunk that put the hosts in charge for good at 37-22.

Free throws by Berni Rodriguez opened the scoring in the second half for Unicaja and Sanchez joined him with a layup that forced an Olimpija timeout at 37-26. Again, the hosts had a rescuer, this time Rannikko, who connected for 8 straight points, including two triples, to recover a 45-27 lead. It was now Milic's turn for 4 straight points highlighted by a spactacular alley-oop from Rannikko that brought the house down at 49-28. Free throws by Santiago were overshadowed by Rannikko's newest triple, and he soon added 3 free throws after Sanchez's technical foul to make it 55-30. Unicaja's 1-for-12 three-point shooting until then said a lot as Olimpija cruised to a 66-38 advantage after three quarters.

The last quarter started with Unicaja trying to fix some problems, but Olimpija replied with aggressiveness as Hazan Rizvic slammed in traffic for a 71-45 scoreboard. The fouls of Unicaja allowed the hosts easy points from the line and let the guests try newly-signed forward Marko Tusek. However, Olimpija's Dejan Hohler welcomed him with a new triple as the difference went over the 30 points, 77-45. It was party time in Ljubljana after that as young Kamil Pietras scored several points to the delight of Olimpija fans who had needed a win.

Head Coaches

OKORN, GASPER
Union Olimpija
"Games like this are rare. Of course, I have to say that this game was our best performance of the entire season. The key for our success was the inside game. We dominated the paint under our board. I can only congratulate my players and thank the fans for an unforgettable night at the Tivoli."
SCARIOLO, SERGIO
Unicaja
"I am really unhappy and also surprised with this performance that my players showed me tonight. I had been telling them these days that the game was really important, but it was obvious that they didn't understand me. Against a team that fights until the last second we cannot play like this, even more after the streak of good results that we had in the last weeks."

Players

RANNIKKO, TEEMU
Union Olimpija
"Before the game we said we had to play aggressive for 40 minutes and to be careful in the third quarter because it is normally our worst. We made it, each player gave its best on court and this win demonstrates that we are still there for the Top 16."
MILIC, MARKO
Union Olimpija
"We have not surrendered yet. As long as we have minimal options to reach the Top 16, we will do everything in our hands to achieve that. We have shown today that we can also beat the biggest and richest teams in Europe."
