The Take

Fenerbahce Ulker will continue its fighting for a spot in the Top 16 from Group C when it faces Zalgiris in Kaunas, Lithuania, on Thursday. Fenerbahce (3-7) rejoined the Top 16 race with a big win against Benetton last week, while Zalgiris (1-9) is on an eight-game losing streak and has virtually no chanceof qualifying for the Top 16, but will try to please its many fans with a big home win. Zalgiris faces severe injury problems as playmakers Marko Popovic (15.1 ppg., 4.9 apg.) and Mantas Kalnietis (3.4 ppg.) sat out in a Baltic League game this weekend. Popovic is doubtful for this game, but Kalnietis has returned to practice and could play. Kirk Penney (7.6 ppg., 43.8% 3FG) is also recovered and will be ready to play. Zalgiris officially announced that head coach Rimantas Grigas will stay on for the remainder of the season and inked Darius Maskoliunas as assistant coach. Maskoliunas helped Zalgiris to win the Euroleague title as a player in 1999. Due to the circumstances, Vidas Ginevicius (4 ppg., 85.7% 2FG) will play most of the minutes at the point guard spot, while Penney, Marcelinho Machado (7.5 ppg.) and Jonas Maciulis (11.9 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) will have extended roles at both wings. Ginevicius will have the tough mission to slow Will Solomon, while Machado and Penney will test their shooting skills against Ibrahim Kutluay (12.5 ppg.) and Damir Mrsic (10.7 ppg., 41% 3FG). Maciulis will test his all-around skills against Rasim Basak (2.8 ppg.) and Eddie Basdem (5.6 ppg.). Mirsad Turkcan (8.7 ppg., 9.6 rpg.), who was sidelined against Benetton Treviso last week, is once again questionable for the game against Zalgiris. If he doesn't play, Kaspars Kambala (15.4 ppg.), Ira Joe Clark (3.2 rpg.) and Oguz Savas (3.3 ppg.) will see extended playing time. Kambala will have a tough test against Tanoka Beard (14.4 ppg., 9.4 rpg.), while Clark will have a big showdown against Paulius Jankunas (10.2 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) and Hanno Mottola (13.4 ppg., 57.9% 3FG), who could take advantage of their range and speed. Fenerbahce has all the pressure in this game, as Zalgiris has minimum chances to advance. Expect an intense, tough game in Kaunas with both teams fighting for different goals.

Quotes Head Coaches

“Fenerbahce has strong players at every position. They have a very aggressive and athletic center Kaspars Kambala. He can box out his defenders and score easy baskets. Together with Turkcan, they are a big threat in the paint. Ulker also has sharpshooters Mrsic, Kutluay and Solomon, so I would say they have no weak positions. In addition, they have strong second unit, too. However, this team depends on outside shooting a lot. When they hit perimeter shots, they are almost unbeatable. We saw it in the game against Benetton, when they played without Turkcan but managed to win. I don’t know if Turkcan will play against us, but we prepare ourselves to play against him. Our point guard Popovic is still injured, but Kalnietis and Maciulis started practicing. If they will be able to play against Ulker, I have more options as a coach.”
Fenerbahce Ulker
“This is the second and maybe the most critical step for us to reach our goal of the Top 16. We climbed the first one by beating Benetton last week, but to give a meaning that win, we have to keep on winning. I like the way my players played defensively against Benetton. If we stay aggressive for the whole game, we can get what we want. I’m really trusting my players that they will do their best. If we consider the place and the power of Zalgiris regarding to the standings, that will be a big mistake. And we don’t want to make another mistake.”

“Fenerbahce Ulker has only three victories in the Euroleague so far, but it’s a very strong team. Their power lies in outside shooting. Players like Solomon, Kutluay and Mrsic are always dangerous from the outside. On the other hand, with big guys Kambala and Turkcan in the paint, Ulker is very well balanced team. Anyway, I believe our coaches will find their weak spots and we will be able to exploit them. The most important thing to do is to avoid the slow start that we had in our first game against Ulker. They hit some difficult three-pointers in the beginning and gained some confidence, while we couldn’t find our game. This time it should be different.”
Fenerbahce Ulker
“We are really too far from the target that we aimed at the beginning of the season. But we are not the one to sit and cry for it. We've put the mistakes behind and are looking forward. The Benetton win is the start of our mission for the comeback. We have the power to beat any team in our group. But we can only do it if we unify and play as a team. We can not overlook Zalgiris by taking their record into account. There’s no bad team in the Euroleague at all. We have to play as tough as we can defensively to keep dreaming of for the win and the Top 16.”
Will Solomon - Fenerbahce Ulker Fenerbahce Ulker yanked itself back into the Top 16 race in Group C with a 70-83 road win at last-place Zalgiris, eliminating Lithuania's sole Euroleague team from continuing beyond the regular season. Fenerbahce rallied behind Will Solomon's second-half scoring splurge to break open what had been a close game at intermission and cruise to victory. Fenerbahce raised its record to 4-7, within one win of fifth-place Aris, although having lost twice to the Greek team, would need to pass it in the win column. Solomon led the winners with 19 points, all but 2 of them in the second half. Kaspars Kambala poured in 18, while Damir Mrsic and Eddie Basen put up 10 each. Jonas Maciulis paced Zalgiris with 21 points. Tanoka Beard registered a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Mantas Kalnietis scored 10 for the hosts.

The scoring started with a basket on penetration by Maciulis that Clark copied him on the other end for Fenerbahce. Maciulis then drove by Ibrahim Kutluay and hammered two-handed dunk while Beard added mid-range jumper off the glass. Clark connected from the downtown and then Kaspars Kambala gave Ulker its first lead, 6-7. Maciulis was still on fire and soon had 6 points himself. Paulius Jankunas added a triple as Zalgiris regained the lead at 11-9. Beard and Kambala exchanged baskets, but Damir Mrsic and Semih Erden combined for Fenerbahce's last 6 points of the quarter, lifting the visitors ahead by 15-19.

Zalgiris started second quarter with aggressive man-to-man defense and it paid off with a steal by Vidas Ginevicius that led to a fadeaway jumper from Jankunas. Eddie Basden had painful collision with Maciulis but it didn't stoped him from nice driving basket that initiated a 2-8 run that vaulted Fenerbahce to a double-digit lead, 17-27. Zalgiris took a timeout and returned more aggresive and fast as Marcelinho Machado made pair of free throws and Mantas Kalnietis brought the hosts back within 21-27 with high-flying dunk off his own steal. After Erden rejected his shot inside, Hanno Mottola' picked up back-to-back fouls in 15 seconds, while Will Solomon of Fenerbahce hit his first basket of the game. Zalgiris steadied, however, as Beard had 5 points on a pair of baskets, one of which came with a free throw, while Maciulis downed a jumper off the dribble. Zalgiris ran another nice play when Maciulis fed Kalnietis, reducing the gap to 30-35. After Mrsic missed free throws, Maciulis made his at 32-35, but Kambala broke the spell for Fenerbahce with a layup in close. Zalgiris got its triple now, with Kirk Penney coming off a screen to tie. Clark tried to keep Fenerbahce ahead with free throws but the last shot of the half was Beard's layup to tie 39-39 at the break.

Jonas Maciulis - Zalgiris KaunasZalgiris started the second half with 3 consecutive turnovers before Machado charged up the crowd with triple and Maciulis added a layup. It was a wake-up call for Solomon, who put Fenerbahce on his back with 8 points. Red-hot Maciulis made free throws but Solomon did him one better with another shot from downtwon. Kalnietis moved fast with the ball and found Beard wide open inside for another basket, but then the points dried up for the hosts during 2 minutes. Fenerbahce, meanwhile, answered with 6 points behind Kambala and Solomon. After a Zalgiris timeout, Mottola rained a shot from the the arc, but Fenerbahce countered by pushing the ball inside to Kambala, who forced a foul on Beard and made both free throws. Kalnietis sparked late Zalgiris comeback with an assist to Beard and a nice coast-to-coast layup that got the hosts within 52-57 after 30 minutes.

Fenerbahce looked to its captain to put the game away early in the final quarter, and Ibrahim Kutluay obliged by pouring in his only 8 points of the game consecutively. Zalgiris, however, went scoreless for more than 3 minutes until Maciulis downed a fastbreak dunk and a triple to keep hope alive. Those hopes faded as Solomon punished the Zalgiris perimeter defense with a jumper and Basdem copied him to make it 64-77. After Kalnietis put back an offenseive rebound and Machado made free throws, Zalgiris got as close as 69-77. Beard drew Kambala's fourth foul and made 1 of 2 free throws, but even as time was running out on a Zalgiris comeback attempt, Mrsic and Solomon made sure with a triple each to seal a solid road victory for Fenerbahce.

Head Coaches

“I want to congratulate our opponents who played very good. It’s sad that we lost. We tried really hard, but we lost. We made too many mistakes. Mantas Kalnietis just recovered from surgery and hasn’t returned to shape. He wanted to help his team very much, but committed 7 turnovers. Tanoka had a good game. He grabbed 13 rebounds against Kambala. It’s a great job. The same cannot be said about Penney and Mottola. They were blank and not effective. Machado defended Kutluay really well, but when he was benched and replaced by Penney, Kutluay started to hit the shots.”
Fenerbahce Ulker
"It was a very important game for us. The victory gave us the chance to fight for another round and make it for the Top 16 as the best sixth team. In the first half we couldn't concentrate and our defense was poor. Our offense was hasty. In the second half we improved our defense and made well prepared shots. It led us to victory. I have to give credit to Zalgiris' players. Despite the fact that they will not qualify to the Top 16 they played from the heart and were close to victory. It‘s a real pleasure to play here in Lithuania where basketball fans create a fantastic atmosphere."

“The main reason for the loss was our huge number of mistakes. We committed way too many turnovers and took too many hasty shots. In the start, when we had a lead, we started to play at a fast pace instead of smart ball distribution. It lead to turnovers and I made three consecutive turnovers at this moment. After good start we gave up control of the game and later on it was too hard to take it back. I can not blame a particular player for this loss. We all take responsibility for it.”
“Our defense didn’t work well tonight. We let them make too many open shots. Sometimes we helped each other on defense, but sometimes not, and that left holes in our defense. We prepared for this game very hard. Coaches told us how to run the defense against Ulker, but it’s sad not every player on our team followed those instructions. After the game, coach pointed that some of us looked like playing basketball for the very first time. I think he was right.”
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Zalgiris came out well and played for the fans. They stayed in the game for the whole game. We stuck with that, but at the end we came out more aggressive and knocked down some shots. In the beginning I wasn‘t very noticeable but later we came together and I hit some shots. Everybody were helping each other, every one stepped up. I have to credit my teammates."
