THE TAKE

Italian champion Benetton looks to get ahead in Group C when it hosts co-leader Winterthur FCB at Palaverde in Treviso, Italy on Thursday. Benetton (5-3) seems to have found its form lately, winning three of its last four games, including two on the road, to improve to 5-3 and take sole possession of third place in the group. However, Benetton was upset by lowly Eldo Napoli in its last home game. Last week Benetton scored a big 76-86 win at Zalgiris Kaunas as Nikos Zisis scored 16 points and dished 11 assists and Angelo Gigli came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points to help make up for the absence of Spencer Nelson, who is recovered from injury and playing again. Barcelona (7-1) shares the group lead with Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow. Last week, Barcelona stormed Pau-Orthez 93-74 as center Mario Kasun has posted a career-best 29 points, plus 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Barcelona topped Benetton 82-69 when they met earlier in the season as Euroleague scoring leader Jaun Carlos Navarro fired in 20 points. Kasun's play last week kept Denis Marconato on the bench for 40 minutes for the first time this season. That is unlikely to transpire again as Marconato, who shares the all-time lead in Euroleague games played with Luis Scola with 129, visits his boyhood club. Aside from one season on loan, Marconato had spent his entire career in Treviso before joining Barcelona last season. Marconato is the Euroleague all-time blocked shots leader as well and his career numbers see him second in rebounds and fourth in two-point shooting (62.7%). Another visitor somewhat familiar with the baskets in Treviso is Italian national team guard Gianluca Basile (9.5 ppg., 45.9% 3FG). Basile's shooting is one reason Winterthur leads the league in three-point accuracy (42.9%). Navarro (20.5 ppg., 48.9% 3FG) is the other, while Jaka Lakovic (11.1 ppg., 3.6 apg.) cannot be overlooked. They will challenge the Benetton backcourt of Zisis (12.3 ppg., 5.9 apg.), the league-leader in assists, Terrel Lyday (9.4 ppg., 2.1 spg.) and Bryant Smith, all of whom are very good defenders. Benetton center Joey Beard will be the team's first line of defense against Kasun and Marconato, with Marcus Goree (14.4 ppg., 6.9 rpg.), Spencer Nelson (12.8 ppg., 8.2 rpg.) and Gigli doing their part as well. If Kasun is not dominating in the paint, Barca can turn to an array of big men including Michalis Kakiouzis, Fran Vazquez and Jordi Trias. The game will no doubt start on a high as the Benetton loyals welcome Marconato, and with the quality players on both teams, there's every reason that it will end that way, too.

Quotes Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"Barcelona and Benetton will play a very interesting game with great tradition on both sides. They are obviously a very strong team with high-quality players. They are at the top of the standings, but having seen that our group is so competitive and open to every kind of result, I expect a very tough game in which either team can win. Barcelona is strong both inside and ouside, having many different solutions with Navarro, Basile, Lakovic on one side, Marconato, Kasun, Kakiouzis on the other. They have quality all over the court, but we want to play at our best and try to get this win."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"This is a very important game for us, because it could bring us a spot in the Top 16 if we can beat Benetton. The Italian team has a lot of different options in their offense. They play with many systems and that is a real problem regarding game preparation. They are used to making many one-to-one plays and we need to play good defense, not allowing them to take any lead on the scoreboard. Anyway, we should be able to deal with this game and close the year in a good manner in the Euroleague."

Players

MORDENTE, MARCO
Benetton Basket
"We want to play at our best against Barcelona, because we need to take revenge after the loss at their place, and then because a win would mean an important step forward in the standings. The psychological impact of this game will be key, since we will have to impose our pace from the beginning and play with great intensity. I think we play a good game if we manage to keep the control of the rhythm on both sides of the floor. It's going to be really important the support of our fans, too. They can push us with their excitement."
UKIC, ROKO
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"Benetton is a difficult team when you have to attack them, because they are used to playing with some defenses that aren't easy to understand, so you don't know the best way to face it. We were able to beat them in Barcelona and our duty is to do the same now in Treviso. Their frontcourt players tend to go outside and take many shots. This situation makes them a dangerous team, because sometimes they run plays with all five players looking for an outside shot."
Soragna and Goree - Benetton Treviso A midseason thriller ended 2006 on a high note in Group C as Benetton outlasted visiting Winterthur FC Barcelona 68-67 in Treviso, Italy on Thursday. Marco Mordente's single free throw with 1.67 seconds on the clock won it for Benetton, whose record improved to 6-3, good for a hold on third place, while Barcelona fell to 7-2 and second place. Jaka Lakovic had hit 2 free throws to tie at 67-67 with 6 seconds left before Mordente drove to force the foul that let him win it at the line. He missed his second try so as to run out the clock. Nikos Zisis led the way for the winners with 21 points, while Mordente added 17 and Marcus Goree had 16 plus 11 boards. For Barcelona, Gianluca Basile lit it up with 19 points, 14 of them in the first 14 minutes, while Jaka Lakovic added 13 and Mario Kasun 10. The game was the comeback for Barcelona center Denis Marconato to his old home, his first time in Treviso as a visitors after having spent 12 years with Benetton. The game was preceded by a long standing ovation for Marconato, a fan favorite in his hometown.

Fran Vazquez started the show by scoring for Barcelona. A jumper from Goree kept the crowd cheering through a fastbreak dunk from Bryant Smith that was matched by a steal and reverse layup by Basile at 4-4. The extremely high tempo meant turnovers were numerous. Basile was hot shooting, but Zisis regained the lead for Benetton with a basket-plus-free throw. Back on Italian soil, there was no stopping Basile who scored, dished to Juan Carlos Navarro and dunked on the break for a 9-12 Barcelona lead after 8 minutes. A Mordente put-back was quickly erased by a triple from Lakovic, and then another three from Basile gave Barcelona an 11-18 margin. Matteo Soragna seized the moment at the end of the quarter by nailing a half-court buzzer-beater - his only points of the game - to make it 14-18 after 10 minutes.

Lyday agreed that the show must go on and fired in a three to start the second quarter by pulling Benetton within 17-18. The intensity went up again as the game got more physical as Basile's three-pointer off the glass gave Barcelona a five-point edge. Goree was on hand to net the jumper that kept Benetton in touch at 21-24. Otherwise, the hosts were struggling offensively while Basile and Lakovic used ball movement to draw fouls the helped boost the lead to 21-27. Goree responded with a dunk and a ferocious block, while Mordente popped a jumper to end a 5-0 Benetton blast at 26-27. Barcelona called timeout to talk it over, but afterwards, Mordente's acrobatic drive gave Benetton the lead, while Zizis and Goree boosted it to 32-27, much to the delight of the crowd. Roko-Len Ukic eventually stopped a three-minute Barcelona scoring drought. Zizis thought he had the last word of the half with a basket-plus-free throw, but Navarro saved a downtown bomb for the buzzer to make the score 37-34 at the break.

Gianluca Basile - Winterthur FCBGoree got his name on the score sheet again right after halftime. Marconato's first bucket all night was followed by a three from Navarro that tied the game, 39-39. The game dropped into a low tempo that strangely suited Benetton as it regained the lead at 43-39 thanks to Mordente and Lyday. A jumper from Zizis was then met by a three from Lakovic, who continued with a free throw and an inside basket to put Barcelona ahead 45-46. Benetton needed the timeout now. Lakovic was making Lyday work a lot and commit fouls, but his misses at the free throw line let Benetton keep close. The score stalled in the last couple of minutes of the third period, which ended 45-47 and promised a very exciting finish.

Goree again broke the ice to start the fourth quarter, showing the way for Zizis to put Benetton in front, 49-47. Barcelona kept misfiring from the foul line, Lakovic this time missing both. Zizis made 2 himself, and when Mordente fired in a corner triple, it was 55-47 and Barcelona stopped the game to talk it over. The crowd was on its feet, but Barcelona was not done yet as Basile made the three that silenced the crowd, making it 58-52 with 6 minutes, 20 seconds left. Mario Kasun put back a rebound that Mordente matched with a baseline drive. Zizis was in the zone now, and connected again beyond the arc as Goree was the boss on defense. Still, a fastbreak and free throws from Kasun and Ukic reduced the gap to 4 points, 63-59. Everything remained to play for as the game entered the last 2:20. Kasun got Barcelona even closer with a lovely hook. Then, Spencer Nelson split a pair of free throws while Lakovic sank both of his for a one-point game. Goree quickly drilled a jumper to keep Barcelona from getting a shot at the lead as Benetton led 66-63 with 20 seconds left. A parade of fouls to test free-throw shooting skills started. Basile swished a pair, while Mordente made 1 of 2 with 11 seconds left. Next, Mordente fouled Lakovic, who coolly tied it up, 67-67. With the last possession, Zizis ran the court and passed to Mordente, who faked and drew a foul on Kasun with under 2 seconds left. Cheers from the crowd welcomed the go-ahead free throw, and then Mordente missed the second on purpose to run the clock out, sealing a major victory to close 2006 in Treviso.

Head Coaches

BLATT, DAVID
Benetton Basket
"Now I am happy. Part of winning is knowing how to lose and part of losing is knowing how to come back and win and I thought we showed that tonight. There is no substitutes for the power of mind and the power of heart. If you are ready and willing, then nothing is impossible. We had a great game from Mordente and Goree and it is not that the others didn’t play well, they did their job. I think it is a huge win. We put ourselves in a good position to qualify."
IVANOVIC, DUSKO
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"It happens since the beginning of the season, we have problems in rebounding and it should not happen because we have some big guys. I am convinced we’ll find Benetton again on our way in the Top 16 but hopefully it will not be the same group."

Players

MORDENTE, MARCO
Benetton Basket
"The last action is a usual one. We needed only one point so you just miss the second to run the clock down. I don’t think this win means we can get to the Final Four. We beat Zalgiris but then we lost in the league. We are a bit inconsistent, we have to stay humble."
BASILE, GIANLUCA
Winterthur FC Barcelona
"I am used to how difficult it is to play here, I have played here so many times. We missed a lot of free throws, which has been the key but we believed we could do it until the end. That’s a shame. We wanted the win to make sure we stayed first and got the qualification, now there are still a lot of games to play, we’ll just see how it goes."
