THE TAKE

Panathinaikos will welcome three of its former heroes now wearing different colors when the Greens host Lottomatica Roma at OAKA on Thursday in a Group G clash. Roma guard Sani Becirovic, head coach Nando Gentile and general manager Dejan Bodiroga all won the Euroleague with Panathinaikos under current head coach Zeljko Obradovic and alongside team captain Fragiskos Alvertis. Despite the pleasant memories, the Roma trio arrives for business. Lottomatica dropped its first two games of the Top 16 and needs a big road win to return to the hunt for a ticket to the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Meanwhile Panathinaikos has been one of the most impressive teams in the Top 16 so far, winning both its game by double figures. The Greek champs’ deep rotation has created headaches for opponents and it could be more of the same. The Panathinaikos backcourt of Sarunas Jasikevicius and Drew Nicholas – who are coming of their best efforts of the season last week at Unicaja – as well as Dimitris Diamantidis, Vassilis Spanoulis and Dusan Kecman is both deeper and more experienced that Roma’s rotation of Becirovic, Ibby Jaaber, Brandon Jennings and Jacopo Giachetti, even though Becirovic’s will surely have a few tips for his new teammates on how to stop his former ones. At small forward, Panathinaikos’s Stratos Perperoglou will go up against Rodrigo de la Duente and Luigi Datome. Roma will turn to Andre Hutson, Primoz Brezec and Angelo Gigli to stop the likes of Nikola Pekovic, Mike Batiste, Antonis Fotsis and Kostas Tsartsaris in the paint. The hosts’ defense has been unforgiving lately, allowing an average of 61.7 points per game in its last three games. And Roma, which has dropped four straight Euroleague games, has seen its scoring and shooting tail off considerably since the start of the Top 16. All signs would point to an easy win for Obradovic’s men, however Roma won’t go down easily, especially in a city where so many of its central figures have enjoyed so much past success. In addition to having Becirovic lead the attack and converting more often on offense, Roma will need to establish more of an inside presence at both ends of the floor to have a realistic chance at the upset. The key for the hosts is to continue to play well-balanced in both minutes and production, riding the hot hands to victory.

GAME NOTES

Panathinaikos
  • Forward Antonis Fotsis is 2 three-pointers away from 100 for his Euroleague career.
  • Guard Sarunas Jasikevicius is 7 assists away from becoming just the fourth player to reach the 500-assist mark in the Euroleague this decade. He is also just 2 steals shy of the 100-steal plateau.
  • Saras was a teammate of Roma forward Rodrigo de la Fuente and general manager Dejan Bodiroga at FC Barcelona when it won the 2003 Euroleague.
  • Guard Drew Nicholas was a teammate of Roma forward Andre Hutson last season at Efes Pilsen.
  • Saras and Nicholas both recorded season highs in points to lead Panathinaikos to victory last week at Unicaja. Nicholas led the way with 19 points and Jasikevicius scored 18.
Lottomatica Roma
  • Guard Sani Becirovic needs 3 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague Basketball career.
  • Becirovic spent the past two seasons at Panathinaikos, helping the club win two Greek championships, two Greek Cups and the 2007 Euroleague. He played alongside nine of the Greens’ current players.
  • Guard Ibby Jaaber has recorded at least 1 steal in each of his last eight Euroleague games.
  • Head coach Nando Gentile spent three seasons as a player at Panathinaikos under its current head coach, Zeljko Obradovic, between 1998 and 2001. Gentile helped the club with three Greek league championships and the 2000 Euroleague. He played alongside two of Panathinaikos’s current players: Fragiskos Alvertis and Antonis Fotsis.
  • Lottomatica general manager Dejan Bodiroga spent some of the prime years of his playing career at Panathinaikos. He played for the Greens under coach Obradovic from 1998 through 2002 and helped the club with three Greek league championships and two Euroleague crowns, including in 2002 when he was named Final Four MVP.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"The Euroleague Top 16 continues with another strong game against a very capable opponent. Despite their two losses in the second phase of the competition, Lottomatica Roma is a very respectful team with great personalities and a deep bench, while the fact that they will come here to fight for their first win makes them really dangerous. Our practices have become much better, we count two wins so far, but our players must keep up the hard work and get ready for another big match. I think controlling the rhythm of the game and the rebounds, while reducing our turnovers could be some of the key points. Meanwhile, I expect from our fans to fill the Olympic Indoor Hall and realize that nothing is over yet in Group G and all the teams that are going to face Panathinaikos will be extremely motivated."
GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"We face a very tough game against a team that has won, while we lost the two previous games. If we want to continue in the Top 16, we must play a perfect game. We will try to do our best. We will fight as we did with Unicaja and Partizan. The court is really tough, fans can influence the game, but we will try. We have no pressure, as we have nothing to lose really, because the club's first goal was to reach the Top 16."

Players

FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Panathinaikos
"Reaching the end of the first round of the Top 16, the most important thing is that Panathinaikos has started to find its shape and to play according to its skills. We won the first two games, but still we have a lot of things to do and it is not the right time to think it is over. The playoffs are four games away and we have to play with high concentration and desire to improve our winning streak in the Top 16. Especially now that we know how hungry Lottomatica Roma will be after two losses in a row. They will play their last card and definitely we shouldn't allow them to feel comfortable in our home court. The initial goal was to keep our home unbeaten, so now that we have managed to accomplish a big win over Unicaja Malaga in Spain, we have to be even more determined in the upcoming game."
BECIROVIC, SANI
Lottomatica Roma
"Personally it will be great to come back to Athens because I will meet my friends and my former teammates, but on the other side we know we play with one of the best teams in Europe, on a court where it is really difficult to win. We have to put a great defense and we must not allow them to shoot. They like playing aggressive and controlling the rhythm. We can’t afford too many turnovers, otherwise they easily get an advantage. This is our last chance in Euroleague, we must give 150 percent."
Antonis Fotsis - PanathinaikosPanathinaikos marched to its third victory in as many Top 16 games by routing Lottomatica Roma 92-67 at OAKA in what was a homecoming for some of the Greens’ favorite sons. Before the game, Panathinaikos honored Roma guard Sani Becirovic, head coach Nando Gendile and general manager Dejan Bodiroga, who all captured Euroleague titles with the Greens, but Panathinaikos had no mercy once the game got underway. Eleven different players scored between 5 and 11 points as part of a well-balanced team-effort that left Roma no chance. Roma led by 3 after 10 minutes, but the hosts controlled the middle two-periods 44-22 to take control. Panathinaikos now leads Group G, while Roma fell to last place at 0-3. The two teams meet again in the Italian capital in two weeks. Vassilis Spanoulis and Drew Nicholas led the winners with 11 points each, Mika Batiste added 10 and Antonis Fotsis, Sarunas Jasikevicius and Nikoa Katzivrettas all scored 9. Saras also dished 5 assists. Andre Hutson, Rodrigo De la Fuente and Brandon Jennings had 11 apiece in defeat while Ibby Jaaber contributed 10.

Rodrigo De La Fuente - Lottomatica RomaThe hosts got on the scoreboard first behind a jumper by Dimitris Diamantidis. However, soon Lottomatica Roma capitalized on a couple of Panathinaikos turnovers to rush ahead 2-4. Drew Nicholas responded with a smooth triple, but Hutson followed with a layup before Nikola Pekovic sank a pair of free throws to put the hosts in front, 7-6. Fotsis stripped Becirovic and punished Roma on the fast break, but Hutson was effective in the paint and with 3 points from the charity stripe tied the game at 11. Panathinaikos was unable to contain Jaaber, who knocked down jumpers from inside and beyond the arc to give Roma a 13-16 advantage. Coach Zeljko Obradovic inserted Batiste, who immediately made his presence felt in the paint, but Roma’s Luigi Datome unleashed a triple from downtown, good for a 17-21 lead. Despite a three-pointer by Dusan Kecman and the boisterous crowd, Roma remained in charge, mainly thanks to its ability to score in transition, and held a 22-25 edge after 10 minutes of up-tempo basketball.

Primoz Brezec opened the second quarter with a basket, but Diamantidis and Jasikevicius unleashed three-pointers to quickly regain the lead for the Greens. After a two-minute span full of missed slam dunks and three-point bricks by both teams, Jaaber made a free-throws to end the drought. Once again though, the tandem of Diamantidis and Jasikevicius stepped up to boost the margin to 32-28. Suddenly Roma looked rather nervous at the offensive end, failing to score some easy baskets, but it managed to stay close on Panathinaikos’s heels behind its energetic defense that produced back-to-back steals –10 after 16 minutes of play. Out of a Panathinaikos timeout, Diamantidis threw a laser pass to Batiste, then Stratos Perperoglou found Fotsis who slammed it home and finally Nicholas buried a triple from deep to extend the lead to 42-34. Nonetheless, Roberto Gabini scored a wild triple too and with the clock ticking down, Rodrigo De La Fuente closed the gap to 44-39 at halftime.

Dimitrios Diamantidis - PanathinaikosPanathinaikos came out for the second half determined to clamp down on defense and break the game open. Behind free throws by Pekovic and a put back layup by Fotsis, the hosts stretched the lead to 52-43. Roma missed 6 shots in one possession and coach Gentile was forced to call timeout in order to regroup his forces. However, Perperoglou thought otherwise and drove to the basket to finish with a thunderous one-handed dunk that forged a double-digit advantage. Rookie Jennings failed to hit an open triple and at the other end Spanoulis knocked down 3 free throws as Panathinaikos pulled away 57-43. When Becirovic made 2 free throws with 2:01 remaining in the third quarter, they were Roma’s first points after six barren minutes and the lead had soared to 61-45. And as though this wasn’t enough, Hatzivrettas’s triple and Spanoulis’s jumper sandwiched De La Fuente’s lay-up to give the Greens a 66-47 cushion with one period left.

De La Fuente connected on a three-pointer early in the final quarter, only to be bettered by Hatzivrettas and Perperoglou who each made a triple to build a 74-54 margin. An airball by Datome and the subsequent triple by Hatzivrettas indicated that the Greens were no match for Roma. Jennings buried a three-pointer and Datome scored off an offensive rebound in an attempt to trim the lead. However, despite the fact that Panathinaikos stepped off the gas in the final minutes, the hosts marched to a well-deserved 92-67 victory, with Kecman putting his stamp with a highlight reel buzzer-beating triple.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was another good performance for my team, even though we committed many turnovers early in the game. In the second half we played some excellent defense and we played smartly in the offensive end. Things are getting better for us. I want to congratulate the fans for the amazing atmosphere they created and the players for the way they played tonight. There are three games left, so we have to realize that nothing is over yet. We must stay focused. As far as Diamantidis is concerned, we’ll know tomorrow about the seriousness of his injury."
GENTILE, NANDO
Lottomatica Roma
"I want to thank the club and the fans for the warm welcome. It’s always a great emotion to come back here and see all these people and fans. They offered me a lot. I spent three wonderful years in Athens, we won many trophies and I will always remember my stay here. Regarding the game, in the first half, we tried to give Panathinaikos a hard time, but they put pressure on us and it was very difficult for my team to respond. Panathinaikos has great players, the team has been built to win the Euroleague trophy and I wish them good luck. It is with no doubt one of the favourites to qualify to the Final Four."

Players

FOTSIS, ANTONIS
Panathinaikos
"We performed great in the second half, as we stepped up a gear, we pressed our opponent and managed to score some easy points in transition. We finished the game with a very satisfying point-difference. As time goes by, we should be playing better and better. The games are getting tougher as the season progresses. It seems that we are in great shape and hopefully we’ll get even better in the next games. We are delighted that we are still unbeaten in this phase. We all knew that we had a great team, despite some bad performances. Working hard has helped us improve our game."
BECIROVIC, SANI
Lottomatica Roma
"Everything that was going on tonight with the fans and their welcome confused me a bit and did not allow me to give my best performance. Anyhow, Panathinaikos showed that it is in really good shape at the moment. They are playing at the level everyone is expecting them to. They are not giving their opponents the chance to score easily against them. It’s very hard to fight them especially here at OAKA, where once again the atmosphere was excellent. I want to thank everybody for the welcome, as it is a proof that I helped the team during the two seasons that I played here. Again, to return to the game, we let them dominate the boards and we gave them too many open shots."
