THE TAKE

The fact that Kinder Bologna arrives to Game 4 of the Euroleague Finals on Thursday with a chance to become continental champions 40 minutes later may not surprise fans who have followed Ettore Messina and his resilient players all season. From its 33-game winning streak in mid-winter to its historic comeback in the semifinals to sweep its nemesis Paf Bologna from the playoffs, Kinder has made a habit of playing spectacularly when it counts most. At the same time, anyone who gives up on Tau Ceramica - even after it lost at home 60-80 in Game 3 - must have a short memory. Dusko Ivanovic and his players have made a habit of killing giants all spring, and showed in their Game 1 upset in Bologna that they are even capable of staring down a roster as loaded with talent as Kinder's. "The series is not over yet," was the first thing Dusko Ivanovic said after Game 3. And he's right, of course. Game 4 is coming on wheels, and if Tau has its way, this won't be the last great battle of the Euroleague season.

The comfortable margin by which Kinder won Game 3 on the road is something of a psychological fire that both teams must handle with care. The Tau players will want to smother that fire, first in their own minds and then at the start of Game 4. The Kinder players will want to forget it completely, because flying too high after a 20-point victory will only blur their view of a Game 4 confrontation in which their opponents will likely be more aggressive than ever. The mental factors at play were on the lips of everyone on Wednesday, the off-day between the two games.

"The most important thing is our mentality," Kinder coach Ettore Messina said. "The other important thing is that we keep a doubt in Tau's mind that it can win. That is more important than making 10 baskets in a row for us. We have to think that what happened for us in Bologna - a mental turnaround in 24 hours - can happen for Tau, too."

One of the most important components of Game 3 was Kinder's ability to play from behind. It was down on the scoreboard, its anchor in the paint, Rashard Griffith, was benched with fouls, and few of its shots were falling in the first quarter. Those factors might have combined to sow doubt in other teams, but Kinder took the opposite route, building on its defense to gain back a mental advantage. As Kinder's confidence grew, Tau's unravelled, and in a 10-minute stretch without a field goal that lasted almost until halftime, the dynamic of the game changed completely.

"I don't think it was the pressure (that got to us)," Ivanovic said in a Euroleague.net chat on Wednesday morning. "I think we have a team with enough experience to play that type of game. We began well, with lots of intensity, but then we let down our guard defensively and committed a lot of turnovers. We gave Kinder confidence that way."

The pressure that remains on Tau now is not fear of losing, not even in front of its adoring home crowd, but the pressure which Kinder's basketball prowess brought to bear on Tuesday. Tau found an answer to Kinder's fullcourt pressure, as Saulius Stombergas brought the ball up court, but then encountered a halfcourt defense that forced turnovers and bad shots. It is extremely rare that a team shoots a better percentage of two-point shots and outrebounds its opponent by 10 but manages to lose by 20 points. It was Tau's shooting hand outside the lane that trembled, as evidenced by a 1-for-14 night beyond the three-point arc and 15-for-24 at the foulline. "In the second and third game our shooters didn't play as well as they can, obviously," Ivanovic noted in the chat. "First, Kinder puts a lot of defensive pressure on them. Second, our movements on offense were slow and they didn't make the moves to free themselves. And third, because our ball movement was very slow."

Precisely while Kinder was struggling to get in the game, it was working to improve its own ball movement, first by bringing back Griffith with two fouls to pass out of the low post, and second by using power forward Matjaz Smodis in the high post to swing the ball from side to side. Emanuel Ginobili scored so much because he received the ball with his defender in motion, permitting him the extra step he needed to get to the hoop. Once he had his inside game going, his outside shot took care of itself.

"I have been an up and down player all season, and that's why my performance Tuesday made me happy," Ginobili said. "I am the kind of player who needs to make a couple shots and then I start to feel good about taking more. Tuesday was one of those days when all my shots fell. I made some difficult baskets, and maybe I should have passed to someone, but I had a lot of confidence in my shot. Maybe tomorrow night it will be different, but maybe Griffith and Smodis will have more space if Tau puts more pressure on me."

Right now, the difference between the two teams is in the subtext of Ginobili's comment. Kinder believes that ANY one of its players can step up and make the crucial difference. That's the belief that Tau must make its own for Game 4, or else.

"We're a little disappointed. We thought we could win Game 3. I don't think it was the pressure (that got to us). I think we have a team with enough experience to play that type of game. We began well, with lots of intensity, but then we let down our guard defensively and committed a lot of turnovers. We gave Kinder confidence that way. But I think that it's good to play again tomorrow, because we have a lot of desire to play the next one. It's the best way to get our motivation back."
MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"We have to think that what happened for us in Bologna - a mental turnaround in 24 hours - can happen for Tau, too. I am very enthusiastic about the way Smodis and Rigaudeau are playing. Smodis added quality with his shots and passes, helping to move the ball, and Rigaudeau transmitted security on offense and defense. Generally, we are recovering the quality of our play. I don't understand precisely our rebounding problems. maybe it's that Rashard hasn't played much, or that Tau just has got better position. Maybe Rashard was surprised not to be double-teamed, and was looking for solutions to that, but I think that in Game 4 he will be an important factor. We feel close to winning the series after Game 3, and we have learned this year that the most important thing is our mentality. The other important thing is that we keep a doubt in Tau's mind that it can win. That is more important than making 10 baskets in a row for us."

"I think mostly just have to play our way. We've been allowing Kinder to get everything too easily. We haven't played the way we were playing to get to this point in the season. We just have to go out and play a little tougher. It's a combination of things, offense and defense, but with a team like Kinder, if you allow them to play free, they have so much talent that anyone one of them can hurt you, because any one of them can score. On offense, we were kind of static, with a lot of guys standing in one position. Hopefully, we can move the ball around quicker. But in general, we just have to insist on playing our kind of basketball, not theirs"
GINOBILI, EMANUEL
Kinder Bologna
"Yesterday, we showed that we are team that needs to run and move the ball quickly from side to side so we can move the defense and penetrate. It's not important if we are missing a player, because there is always another player willing to step up, like Frosini on defense and Smodis opening the floor with his three-pointers in the clutch. I needed in Game 3 to play my game. I drove to the rim to find my baskets. I found them and that changed my game mentally. Then it was one of those days when all my shots fell. I made some difficult shots, and maybe I should have passed to someone, but I had a lot of confidence in my shot. Maybe tomorrow night it will be different, but maybe Griffith and Smodis will have more space if Tau puts more pressure on me."
RIGAUDEAU, ANTOINE
Kinder Bologna
"In this team, everybody does what's necessary for the team. It's not important that I score every night, but my job is to keep the group together and to understand the pace of the game. We have some difficulty with Tau in rebounding. They have big, physical inside players. We have to box out better tomorrow night. But probably our younger players have to understand what exactly it means to box out. I don't think that Tau can change something in their system now. I don't think they will be able to do that. We have to play tough defense on the perimeter, rebound better and hope that Rashard gives us more inside points. In that way, we'll make it a close game at the end, and one player's creativity will decide the game."
ABBIO, ALESSANDRO
Kinder Bologna
"We were fortunate to stay close with Tau at the beginning of Game 3, when they played with enthusiasm. Then our inside-outside play became very important, and even if Rashard had foul trouble, our tough defense was there. We didn't give up easy shots, nor penetration. Our coach asked us to play better one-on-one defense and we did that. Now, we have to expect a reaction from Tau like our own reaction after Game 1, not so much in in strategy, but in aggressiveness and enthusiasm and in the crowd participation."
Elmer Bennett - Tau Ceramica - Euroleague 2000-01 Keep the champagne on ice, because the Euroleague Finals are going to Game 5! Tau Ceramica, the giant-killers of the postseason, remain alive and kicking after blowing by Kinder Bologna 96-79 in Game 4 on Thursday to even this best-of-five series at 2-2. Fired up by their 9,500 fans at Fernando Buesa Arena, Tau showed the same character and resourcefulness that got them this far, and came up with answers for everything Kinder threw at them. Elmer Bennett (19 points, 8 assists) directed the orchestra, but Victor Alexander (18 points) and Mindaugas Timinskas (18 points) came up with huge games on offense as Tau's point total soared as if Kinder's famous defense didn't exist. Besides helping Tau's exterior game recover completely, Timinskas also threw down the dunk of the season in the second quarter. It was that kind of night for Tau. As such, the heroes of Vitoria, Spain extended the Euroleague Finals to the very limit, Game 5 next Thursday, May 10, in Bologna, Italy. You wanted spectacular basketball? Well, you've got it like never before in the Euroleague Finals.

For Kinder, Game 4 was a comedown despite the best performance yet by center Rashard Griffith, who finished with a team-high 18 points and 6 rebounds while shooting 9 for 11 from the field (82 percent). Game 3 hero Emanuel Ginobili and Alessandro Abbio added 15 each for Kinder, but the team's problems on defense were such that coach Ettore Messina finally put on a zone for most of the second half. It slowed the rhythm that Bennett had forced, but ultimately it did not stop Tau, whose shooters rediscovered their range and hit 9 of 18 three-pointers.

Manu Ginobili - Kinder Bologna - Euroleague 2000-01The stars came to with their game faces on from the opening tipoff. The first quarter offered a basketball show second to none no matter where on the court you looked. For Tau, Bennett drove everywhere in high gear, dished to a trio of three-point shooters - Laurent Foirest, Mindaugas Timinskas and Saulius Stombergas - whose accuracy in the opening minutes already outdid Tau's 1-for-14 three-point performance in Game 3. Victor Alexander and Fabricio Oberto had their hands full underneath, however, where Rashard Griffith made all five of his shots. Helping him was Ginobili, with a pair of his trademark acrobatic drives, but together they could only manage to hold Tau to a 10-10 tie before the hometeam started feeling real good. The three-pointers by Timinskas and Stombergas were followed by two baseline jumpers from Alexander, a jumper by Bennett and two free throws by Alexander pushed Tau ahead by 24-17 after a quarter.

The best was yet to come for the home fans as Tau locked down Kinder and opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run. Alexander had the first two baskets, Stombergas a fastbreak, and Timinskas drilled his second three-pointer. The lead hit 33-17 before Kinder could react with its first basket in more than four minutes, a pull-up jumper by Ginobili. Then David Anderson hit from the baseline, Antoine Rigaudeau made one from the lane, Griffith dunked and Rigaudeau popped Kinder's first three-pointer from the corner. Like that, the lead was down to 35-28, and no one of the 9,500 fans at Fernando Buesa Arena needed to be reminded of how lethal Kinder can be no matter what the scoreboard might say. But as quickly as Kinder bit, Tau bit back in a 9-3 closing run that featured almost without doubt the best individual play of the whole European season.

Mindaugas Timinskas - Tau Ceramica - Euroleague 2000-01Timinskas, a defender first and outside shooter second, suddenly got a head of steam on a drive down the lane, and the result was an absolutely explosive dunk detonated on the head of Andersen. The dunk brought the entire arena to its feet, including the 500 or so Kinder fans who had to witness it. Timinskis ended up standing over Anderson, who was called for a foul, and making the free throw. As the foul shot fell in, Griffith was called for fouling Scola, who made one free throw for a four-point possession that gave Tau a 43-31 halftime lead. By that point, Alexander had 12 points and Timinskas 11 to offset 14 by Griffith. What's more, Tau played the whole half with just 2 turnovers, 12 fewer than it had in Game 3. Whether or not Kinder was the same team as in Game 3 was arguable, but Tau certainly was not. It was clear already that Dusko Ivanovic's troops were not about to give an inch more to Kinder.

The magic continued for Tau after halftime with an 8-0 run that drove up that lead to 51-31. It took a Ginobili three-pointer to stop the bleeding for Kinder, who also went into a zone defense to slow Tau. Three minutes and a 9-2 run later, Kinder was back in it, and when Griffith backed down Alexander for two points, the lead had been cut to single digits, 56-47. But Tau had the answers again this time, as Foirest rained a three-pointer from the corner, Bennett drove for a layup, Luis Scola dunked and Bennett hit another three. The lead was back to more than 15, 66-50, and with yet another three, this one by Stombergas, Tau reached the end of three quarters with a 69-54 lead. Nobody was forgetting Kinder's miraculous comeback from 18 down in the fourth quarter against Paf in the previous round, but with the way Tau was playing, nobody in Vitoria was too worried, either.

"It's true that I've won all the finals I've coached in and that someday I'll have to lose one. But it's also true that I've won all those finals on the road. For the fifth game, I expect that there will be fewer points than tonight. It will be a more intense, tougher and more physical gmae. Kinder will play with more physical contact and more attention to the passing lanes. If we maintain our intensity as we had it today, and our mentality, I am completely convinced that we can win."
MESSINA, ETTORE
Kinder Bologna
"I'm a little disappointed because we haven't played well. With this defense we played tonight, you can't win a European title. We've given up 96 points, the most we've given up all season. We werre systematically out of position the whole game. At one point, with the zone defense, we got within 9 points, but two stupid mistakes allowed them to score two three-pointers from the wings. As for the difference in all these games, I would say in the first two games, it was the absence of Griffith and his return. Here in the third and fourth games, maybe it had to do with the long break before these games. If, after we won the Italian Cup, someone would have offered us 1-1 in Vitoria, I would have accepted that. But I don't think the homecourt will be the main factor now. It's been shown all season that that's not the case."

"This is an incredibly interesting series, two very good teams facing each other, but each team winning by a lot. Maybe when one team breaks that balance, it makes it easier to take advantage. As for my dunk, I think somebody helped me to get up there. I didn't think that would happen when I started the play. We haven't had any lapses during this game. We played all 40 minutes at the same level. That was the key. In Game 5, the crowd in Bologna that is crazy to win will have a big effect."

"Tau had a lot of trust and confidence after scoring their three-pointers at the end of the first half. We never had a consistent reaction to them. Our real problem was our defense, not just on the perimeter, but everywhere on the court. Tau played as we expected them too, with a lot of energy and fast pace and we never had an effective defense against their transition. Now both teams have a week to reflect on it, but I think we just need a different approach and to play our defense in Bologna in order to win."
SMODIS, MATJAZ

"After our victory in the Italian Cup, our goal was to come here and win one game, so we've got that. We probably didn't find enough motivation tonight to put the series away."
ABBIO, ALESSANDRO

"We have one game left in our place and we are going to defend to the death. Today, Tau has surprised us with the aggressiveness of all its players, above all Bennett. I don't know hwy the first four games have been so unusual. but today the team that dominated the game mentally has won."
BONORA, DAVIDE
Kinder Bologna
"Tau shot a better percentage and we were impressed by their tough defense. It was a photocopy of our win in Game 2. And thanks to their defense, Tau was able to run and play a lot more freely on offense. We tried to solve our problems just with offense, and not with defense."
