THE TAKE

Tau Ceramica aims to make its fourth consecutive Final Four appearance when it challenges Serbian champion Partizan Igokea for a ticket to Madrid in the teams’ best-of-three Quarterfinal Playoffs series that begins on Tuesday at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Tau boats one of the most experienced teams in the quarterfinals, but the young and confident team from Belgrade has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, most recently knocking out defending champion Panathinaikos in the Top 16 finale. Despite battling injuries all season long, Tau has remained an efficient basketball machine and has gone on to lead all Euroleague teams in points per game (84 ppg.). Head coach Neven Spahija’s side also won more games (5) than any other in the Top 16 this season. Now the squad is fully healthy for the playoffs, although the return of forward James Singleton from a lengthy injury layoff coincided with the expiration of Gabe Muoneke’s short-term deal and management has allowed the latter forward to leave. Meanwhile Partizan is riding high having won four in a row to advance from the Top 16 in dramatic fashion plus a series of strong domestic results to put head coach Dusko Vujosevic’s men in a proper mindset. In addition to the team’s on-court leader, Euroleague Basketball’s MVP for March Milt Palacio, and dominant inside force Nikola Pekovic, veteran swingman Dusan Kecman, power forward Novica Velickovic have also played major roles in the team’s success. Tau’s attack is led by scoring machine Igor Rakocevic, with center Tiago Splitter controlling the paint. Zoran Planinic and All-Euroleague second team selection Pablo Prigioni run the offense and power forward Mirza Teletovic has enjoyed a breakout campaign. Throughout the season the key to stopping partisan had been stopping Pekovic – the team is 0-4 when he scores fewer than 8 points – however the constantly growing confidence and improving play of the squad as a whole increases the difficulty of that task. Nevertheless Tau will use Splitter and Will McDonald in an effort to push Pekovic into foul trouble or simply to wear him down, while the backcourt of Prigioni, Rakocevic and Planinic will target Palacio. Another key matchup could be at small forward, where Partizan’s young, but talented Milenko Tepic will encounter Pete Mickeal, Simas Jasaitis and Sergi Vidal. Two X-factors for the visitors in Game 1 could be shooting specialist Uros Tripkovic or. 2.29-meter shot-blocker Slavko Vranes. Tau’s home-court advantage could be the difference as it has only lost one Euroleague home game in the past three-and-a-half years, however Partizan’s spirited players have shown all season that they won’t be intimidated and promise to make this series a thrilling basketball matchup where anything can happen.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"The team is in good form as we showed in the last two domestic games against Unicaja and Gran Canaria. Everyone is healthy and I think we will able to count on all our players. We want to win the game, and we have prepared ourselves for this challenge. We will face a tough team that could be seen as the biggest surprise of the Top 16. They are a very good team. Tthey are young but that doesn't mean they are inexperienced. They are coached by Vujosevic, who has been able to work with the same group of players for a long time, they know the system perfectly and that makes them a team that has very good chemistry. In addition, they have nothing to lose, so they will be pretty dangerous. The pressure is on us, but we will try to overcome it playing seriously in order to give a win to our fans."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"We already made a huge success but this is now and our ambitions are even bigger. It is sure that we are ready to give our best in the quaterfinals games. Tau is an extremely strong team which is really dangerous at home. That is the reason why Tau is favorite in the series. But we made several surprises so far. I personally expect from my players not to be satisfied with this success, but to put a higher new target on sight and to modulate their ambitions with the new goal."

"I feel good, a bit better every day. I could join back team practices, so I hope I will keep improving in the practices before the game. I missed last game against Gran Canaria but I will be ready to play on Tuesday. I'm eager to play and I will do my best to achieve it. Winning the first game is quite important, because their home court is one of the hottest in the competition and a win in game one would give us some extra confidence and we could take that game more relaxed. The team is thinking of this game for a long time, it even hurt us because we lost concentration in domestic competition but now the time has come and we are eager to play and win. They got a balanced team, with young and talented players that are making a very good basketball, so it will be tough to beat them. Palacio and Pekovic are doing a very good job this season, we must prevent them from feeeling comfortable, because if they do feel that way, they can win a game on their own."
VELICKOVIC, NOVICA
Partizan Igokea
"Tau Ceramica is an extremely balanced team with two great players at each position. They left injuries behind. The major part of the team are dangerous scorers with lot of points in their hands. They have good fastbreak and excellent rebounding. But even the best teams have a weakness. It is going to be too hard with two or three games but I believe we can win at the end."
Zoran Planinic - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica moved within one win of its fourth straight trip to the Final Four when it topped Partizan Igokea 74-66 in Game 1 of the teams' best-of-three Euroleague Basketball Quarterfinal Playoffs on Tuesday night at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, Spain. Zoran Planinic scored 18 to lead Tau to its eighth straight home win. Tau can clinch a ticket to the Final Four in Madrid on Thursday if it beats Partizan in Game 2 in Belgrade. The visitors challenged from the very start and led 31-33 at halftime. However a big third quarter from Planinic and free throws from Tiago Splitter soon restored Tau’s lead. Partizan never quit and closed the gap to just 5 points with three minutes remaining, but after a Tau timeout, Igor Rakocevic drilled a clutch triple and Partizan never recovered. Rakocevic finished with 15 points and Splitter and Will McDonald posted 8 each. Dusan Kecman paced Partizan with 13, Nikola Pekovic added 12 and Novica Velickovic and Milt Palacio scored 10 points apiece.

Tau stormed the court playing tough defense that prevented Partizan from scoring for a full two minutes. Meanwhile, McDonald and Planinic made easy layups off offensive rebounds to put Tau ahead 4-0. Partizan did not panic and managed to tie a minute later on a basket-plus-free throw by Kecman. The pace slowed a bit as both squads struggled to score, before Rakocevic, who collected 4 points in a row, returned the lead to Tau. Planinic followed him with a triple that extended the margin to 11-6 midway through the first quarter. Partizan reacted quickly, choosing to feed Slavko Vranes in the paint and looking for penetration from its perimeter players. Tau couldn’t adjust in time, as Pekovic capped a 2-8 run with his first basket, good for the first Partizan lead, 13-14 after 9 minutes. Planinic hit a layup entering the last minute, as the third foul on Tripkovic, while a technical foul on Partizan head coach Dusan Vujosevic allowed Tau to raise 3 more points from the free throw line before Palacio's buzzer-beater two-pointer left an 18-16 scoreboard after 10 minutes.

Nikola Pekovic - Partizan IgokeaPekovic needed little time in the second quarter to tie the game again and force Splitter's second foul. James Singleton answered with a monster two-handed dunk, but Pekovic kept rocking inside and drew Splitter's third foul, sending him to the bench. Differences stayed at a minimum, with both teams responding to any move by the other. The lead changed on every offense, making for a great show. A layup by McDonald gave Tau a small margin, 28-25, after 17 minutes, but Partizan answered quickly with a three-pointer by Tepic. Another shot from downtown was made by Singleton, but Velickovic answered with his own. The shooting spree left a 31-31 tie two minutes before halftime. The game turned into a defensive battle at that point, with every player giving his best and saving no energies. No one scored until Milenko Tepic took advantage of a mismatch to nail a short jumper with 10 seconds left, letting Partizan take a 31-33 edge at halftime.

Planinic hit a three on the first Tau attack, but Partizan reacted quickly as Tepic scored a free throw followed by a triple by Velickovic to keep a small advantage. The home team found Pete Mickeal, who managed to tie the game with 4 points in a row, but the joy didn’t last for long as Velickovic hit a layup right after that to preserve Partizan’s lead. Then it was Planinic’s turn. The guard hit a three-pointer and a jumper in the corner to lead a 7-0 run that stunned Partizan and forced an urgent time out with Tau up 45-40 midway through the period. The stoppage didn’t fix anything for the guests at first as Planinic increased the gap with another triple. But Partizan hadn’t given up. Uros Trikpovic showed up for his first triple and Palacio scored a layup to cut the gap to 48-45. The difference remained steady until Partizan committed a pair of turnovers entering the last minute that gave Tau some room. Splitter made 4 free throws to give the hosts a promising lead and, after Tripkovic hit a triple from the corner, Splitter scored again from the line to close the third period with a 56-50 Tau edge.

Igor Rakocevic - Tau CeramicaPartizan started the last period playing with Tepic at point guard and having one main target on offense: to feed Pekovic in the low-post against Singleton. Pekovic drew two fouls and scored a pair of free throws, but Tau found Splitter and Pablo Prigioni on offense to stay ahead, 63-54, after a three-pointer by the playmaker with seven minutes to go. Kecman came to the rescue with a huge three, but the worst news for the guest came with the fourth foul of Pekovic, which forced Vujosevic to replace him with Vranes with six minutes to play. Rakocevic made it an 8-point game with a short jumper, but problems came for Tau as well and it was quick; Splitter and McDonald committed their respective four fouls in less than 20 seconds, putting Tau back in deep trouble midway through the last quarter. Rakocevic showed up again to give the hosts a double-digit margin from the free-throw line, enough to prevent Partizan from rallying. But Pekovic was patient, and found the right moment to take advantage of Tau’s foul trouble and get his team within 67-62 with three minutes remaining. Tau head coach Neven Spahija called for a timeout after which Rakocevic found the perfect screen to hit a key three-pointer that put a lot of pressure on the guests. Velickovic reduced the margin with a nice basket off the glass and Pekovic came up big on defense to prevent Splitter from scoring twice. Partizan didn’t take advantage of that, however, as it missed consecutive offenses and allowed Tau reach the last minute-and-a-half leading 72-64. Although Kecman scored from the free throw line, it was Rakocevic who killed Partizan’s hopes with a layup to secure the home win.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"We managed to win by the biggest margin of the four Quarterfinal Playoff games played tonight, and we did it by just 8 points. That shows that the playoffs are quite tough. Every team is powerful and tough to beat. We played with personality, and even when he didn't shoot well tonight, we overcame that with very good defense. We had several players shooting under their level, but we got a deep roster and Zoran Planinic played really well tonight for the entire game."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"First of all, I want to congratulate Tau for its first win in the series. One of the keys was that Tau was able to stop our inside game, while Zoran Planinic, Pablo Prigioni and Igor Rakocevic hit critical three-pointers in key moments of the game. You need to play 40 minutes of basketball to compete at this level and you cannot waste a single minute. You must play well every second and try to make things happen."

Players

PRIGIONI, PABLO
Tau Ceramica
"We played great defense tonight and that allowed us to win despite a bad shooting night. Zoran Planinic had an excellent game tonight, he kept the team on his shoulders for the opening three quarters. I don’t want to think a lot about the next game, we must recover as fast as we can. Sometimes it is not good to play a game in your mind before doing it on the court, so I want to focus only in recovering and rest for the game on Thursday."
PLANINIC, ZORAN
Tau Ceramica
"They play really tough basketball, their head coach is the real star of this team because he makes them play with a lot of discipline. I like to play this kind of games, the important ones. I hope we can be able to finish the series in Belgrade, although we know that it will be tougher than it was today."
KECMAN, DUSAN
Partizan Igokea
"We missed a big chance to win in Vitoria tonight. We didn’t play the way we should to be able to win. Tau hit some key shots in crucial moments and we couldn’t answer properly. We missed some shots and committed key turnovers that made the way easier for Tau in the key moments. I think we must play faster to get some easy points, we must try to run the break in order to give Tau trouble. We couldn’t do it today, we run the court just a few times tonight."
