THE TAKE

AXA FC Barcelona will look to avenge its opening night loss when it hosts Partizan Igokea on Thursday night. Partizan center Nikola Pekovic opened the season with a bang, scoring a career-high 29 points on 13-of-14 shooting to win Week 1 MVP honors and, more importantly, give the Serbian champs an 81-78 victory over Barca. Partizan used its momentum to start the season 3-2, but has since dropped back-to-back games to fall to fifth place in Group C. Meanwhile Barcelona has won three straight and is unbeaten at home this season. At 5-2, Barca is tied for second place in the group. Naturally, much of the hosts’ focus going into the game will be on how to stop Pekovic. The rising star has remained a prime force, though his numbers have dipped in road games. Pekovic has posted just only 10 points on 33.3% shooting in his last two games away from home. Meanwhile Barca center Mario Kasun has been coming into his own and has averaged 16 points on 70.6% shooting over the last two games. That battle in the paint could serve as the key event in this contest. Partizan’s success has naturally been fueled by its big when, who have the club ranked second in the league in rebounding. However the guards have not produced accordingly, as Partizan is last in the Euroleague in three-point shooting percentage and steals. Interestingly, Barcelona has similar issues, though not as extreme, as it ranks in the top third of the league in rebounding, but in the bottom third in three-point shooting. Barca’s top performer this season has been guard Jaka Lakovic, who teams with Pepe Sanchez, Gianluca Basile and swingman Alex Acker to form a deep and versatile backcourt, that will attack Partizan’s guard corps led by Milt Palacio, Milenko Tepic and Dusan Kecman. Nearly as deep at the forward spots, Jordi Trias, Fran Vazquez and Ersan Ilyasova challenge Partizan forwards Cedomir Vitkovac and Novica Velickovic, while Denis Marconato offers experience behind Kasun against Pekovic. The shooting skills of Uros Tripkovic could be a wildcard for Partizan if Barca double teams Pekovic inside. Barcelona remains the favorite at home, where it has won eight straight games, but Pekovic has already shown that Partizan has the talent to score the upset. It will be interesting to see how this game develops after the way their first encounter went, in what could turn out to be a classic showdown.

Quotes Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"Back in the first game, we could see Partizan is a strong team that can beat anyone. Moreover, this is a very important game for them in order to go on fighting for the Top 16. We know for sure their inside game can hurt us a lot, so we need to play more aggressive than we were in Belgrade, where we were unable to stop Nikola Perovic. But let me say that he’s not the only problem regarding Partizan. Palacio played a very good game as well. I want my players to be concentrated from the first play of the game in order to get a win that is very important for us."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"There were many who saw Barcelona as a winner before our first game in Belgrade that we won. Now it is the same situation. This is the fact we are going to play that road game unloaded. If we open the game brave and patient, I am sure we will be able to make a surprise. Barcelona is an excellent team, well balanced at each position. Our hope is that Milton Palacio will be ready to play after he suffered a light injury last weekend. I believe Palacio together with Bozic, Tepic, Tripkovic and Kecman could be counterweight to the Barcelona guards."

Players

MONCASI, ALBERT
AXA FC Barcelona
"For us, it is a very important goal winning all the games we play at home. We have showed that is a very difficult task for any team beating us when we play here and we have to keep this situation. Personally, I have good memories about the game in Belgrade despite us losing, because it was the first one I played a good amount of minutes with the team. I hope to go on being a help for the team every time the coach will trust me."
BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan Igokea
"We were lucky to face Barcelona in the beginning of the season when they were not in shape. Things are different today. Barcelona has played extremely good in the last weeks and we are expecting real terrible game there. One thing is for sure: We shall play with heart and high energy like we always do. If we manage to limit their guards, we could make the surprise that we want."
Roger Grimau - AXA FC Barcelona AXA FC Barcelona improved to 6-2 in Group C and took a major step to reach the Top 16 by thrashing Partizan Igokea 95-69 at home on Thursday night. Barcelona ties with archrivals Real Madrid for the second spot in Group C, just one win away from the overall leader Panathinaikos, first at 7-1. Meanwhile, Partizan dropped to 3-5 and ties with Chorale Roanne for the decisive fifth spot in Group C. Both teams face each other in Belgrade, Serbia next week. Roger Grimau paced the winners with 19 points on 4-for-5 two-pointers, 2-for-3 triples and 5-for-5 free throws. Gianluca Basile and Fran Vazquez each added 15 points, Jaka Lakovic had 14 while Mario Kasun got 13 for Barcelona. Uros Tripkovic had 16 points for Partizan while Novica Velickovic added 13 for the guests, whose superstar Nikola Pekovic was limited to 7 points due to severe foul troubles. Pekovic picked up 2 quick fouls and Barcelona got the lead for good with a fluid offense in which Kasun played a major role. Barcelona led 28-14 after 10 minutes and even when Tripkovic singlehandedly brought Partizan within 36-30, Basile and Grimau helped the hosts to boost their margin to 47-36 at halftime. An unstoppable Grimau and a 10-meter bomb by Basile gave Barcelona a 65-51 after 30 minutes and Partizan did not recover in the fourth quarter.

Milt Palacio got Partizan going with a fallaway jumper that Trias matched with an uncontested dunk, as both teams tried to adjust their offenses in the early going. Barcelona missed 5 consecutive shots until Kasun fed Lakovic for a backdoor layup, as Partizan struggled to find easy shots. Kasun shined with a jump hook and soon added a put-back dunk for a 8-2 Barcelona lead after 4 minutes. Tripkovic fired in a fadeaway jumper but Pekovic soon picked up his second foul. Kasun made a free throw and by the time Basile buried a five-meter shot, Barcelona has an 11-4 lead. Dusan Kecman found his first point with a bomb from downtown but a red hot Kasun dunked in transition and added the free throw that came with it. Partizan kept finding it hard to score with Pekovic on the bench now. Grimau beat the guests' zone defense with a corner triple to boost Barcelona's lead to double digits, 17-7. Velickovic made free throws but Grimau and Lakovic kept the hosts way ahead, 21-11. Grimau stroke again from downtown but Dejan Borovnjak matched with a layup-plus-foul. Vazquez took over with back-to-back monster dunks for a 28-14 Barcelona lead after 10 minutes.

Uros Tripkovic - Partizan IgokeaKasun kept pacing Barcelona with another close basket but Tripkovic answered from downtown to give Partizan some hope at 30-17. It didn't last long, however, as Ersan Ilyasova stepped up with a long two-pointer and even when Velickovic answered in the other end, Kasun had a key three-point play on Pekovic's third foul. Velickovic kept pacing Partizan with a triple and Cedomir Vitkovac added a driving layup - and the free throw that came with it for a 35-25 Partizan deficit. Palacio also scored in a 1-11 run that Milenko Tepic capped with a bomb from downtown to make it a six-point game, 36-30. Barcelona had struggled against the guests' zone defense until Basile buried a seven-meter triple. Grimau added free throws while Tripkovic sank his second three-pointer. Lakovic immediately answered from downtown for a 44-33 Barcelona margin. Basile made a free throw and Grimau added a big basket but Tripkovic - who else? - fired in another triple to fix the halftime score at 47-36. Partizan committed 10 first-half turnover against Barcelona's 4.

Slavko Vranes found his first points on a put-back basket that Alex Acker erased with a baseline jumper. Partizan, still without Pekovic, managed to stay in the game, as Velickovic hit a free throw and Basile added a fallaway jumper. Basile hit a big three-pointer and soon added a reverse layup to keep the hosts out of trouble, 53-41. Lakovic finished a four-chance Barcelona offense with a six-meter shot to make Partizan call a much-needed timeout at 55-42. Kecman stepped up with a driving layup and Tripkovic copued him soon after that to get Partizan within 55-47. Barcelona did not panic, however, as Grimau shined with an electric driving layup in Pekovic's fourth foul. Borovnjak tried to change things with free throws but Barcelona had already found answers to the guests' zone defense. Marconato scored inside and soon added a jumper for a 62-51 lead. The guests kept trying outside shots without much success, while Basile beat the buzzer with a 10-meter bomb that boosted the hosts' margin to 65-51 after 30 minutes.

Pekovic had his first points right at the start of the fourth quarter but Vazquez provided a highlight with a power dunk and soon added free throws for a 69-53 Barcelona lead. Partizan needed a major comeback now and Pekovic tried to ignit one with free throws, but Barcelona had already slowed down its offense with Pepe Sanchez running the show. Basile buried an unbelievable shot and Grimau shined again with a huge driving basket. Vazquez had a high-flying block against Pekovic but Palacio still got Partizan within 73-58 with 7 minutes to go. Barcelona kept following its game plan, as an unstoppable Grimau made free throws while Sanchez followed a three-point play with more foul shots to break the game for good, 80-60. Everything was said and done up to that point, as Barcelona keeps fighting to win Group C and even when Pekovic kept scoring, Partizan has a big showdown against Roanne next week.

Head Coaches

IVANOVIC, DUSKO
AXA FC Barcelona
"We placed a good game, with the game-plan executed well. The idea was to stop Pekovic, who had done a lot of damage to us in Belgrade, and also to stop their transition game. We achieved both objectives, but the game wasn’t as easy as it looks from the final score. Partizan is a solid team that had problems due to Palacio’s injury and yet they hung in there 30 minutes, although in the end our quality gave us a ample margin. I hope Partizan qualifies for the Top 16 because they deserve it. Our game is getting better and better, although there is always room for improvement. For example, tonight we scored 95 points, our most this season in the Euroleague, but a lot of those baskets were fastbreaks. In the halfcourt game, we still have problems."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan Igokea
"Barcelona is a better team than us and I want to congratulate them on a deserved victory, but I have to say we made it easy on them with our high number of turnovers, 21. My team has made too many errors. It’s true that in every game we gain experience, but that school is expensive. But in the end, I am happy to have gone 1-1 against Barcelona."

Players

GRIMAU, ROGER
AXA FC Barcelona
"I am very happy with our game, with the victory and with one step more we made towards the second round. I feel we are improving game to game, and that is most important. With six victories, we are close to qualifying for the next round, so now the objective is to achieve mathematical qualification and then get better during some games without pressure on the result. As for my career high scoring in a Euroleague game. It’s nothing more than a nice detail within the good game played by the whole team."
BOZIC, PETAR
Partizan Igokea
"We are sad because of the bad image we showed in the last quarter. When we were within 10 points, we just lacked a couple of good plays to get closer. But it was precisely in those moments that we made childish errors that permitted Barcelona to take off on the scoreboard again. Nikola Pekovic was on the court for very few minutes, and without him, our best player, it was an impossible mission."
