THE TAKE

Montepaschi Siena and Skipper Bologna fight for a spot in the Euroleague Final when they face each other in the first semifinal in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday at 18:10 CET. Montepaschi and Skipper have already faced off four times this season - twice in the Euroleague and twice in the Italian League - with each side winning two times. Both teams have shown mental toughness, as Montepaschi made it to the Final Four by beating Barcelona in Barcelona on a last-second free throw by David Vanterpool, and Skipper knocked off Efes Pilsen in Bologna then Pau-Orthez in Pau on two Milos Vujanic freebies. Both teams get it done with their ability to get out on the fast break and play stifling defense and they are both playing their best basketball of the year. Montepaschi proved that it's on fire by destroying Benetton in the Italian League two days before leaving for Tel Aviv. Skipper, meanwhile, is insisting that it is the underdog in this Final Four and it is facing adversity after losing its center Tomas Van Den Spiegel, who injured his foot in his first game back after missing nearly a month with a muscular problem.

The rivalry between Montepaschi and Skipper has been intense. Skipper won a back and forth battle in Bologna, while Montepaschi's defense strangled the life out of Skipper offense in Siena. Skipper won the first match in Bologna, 95-86, pulling away in the final minutes behind the clutch shooting of Matjaz Smodis and Vujanic. Carlos Delfino was also excellent for Skipper, racking up 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Skipper held Montepaschi's point guard, Vrbica Stefanov, to just 4 points in 25 minutes and won the rebounding war 42-40 thanks to Van Den Spiegel's 11 boards in 18 minutes.

The second time that the teams faced off, Montepaschi's defense stopped Skipper down the stretch and they pulled away to a hard-fought 76-69 win. David Andersen's defense around the basket was key for Montepaschi and the Australian big man, who played with Kinder Bologna in the 2002 Final Four in Bologna, scored 15 points with 6 assists. Vanterpool overpowered Skipper's guards to the tune of 23 points, 4 assists and 3 steals, while Giacomo Galanda stepped up against his former teammates with 11 points and 9 rebounds. Curiously, Skipper again managed to hold down Stefanov, as the Montepaschi point man scored just 2 points in 21 minutes. Milos Vujanic was Skipper's top scorer with 19 points and Matjaz Smodis added 15. The rivalry has even resulted in some very physical play, as both teams have players who won't back down when challenged. A confrontation between Matjaz Smodis and Bootsy Thornton occurred when the teams faced off in Bologna during the regular season and when the teams met in Siena each side was called for a flagrant foul in the fourth quarter.

Montepaschi arrived in Tel Aviv by winning four of its last five Top 16 games and knocking off the last two Euroleague champions, Barcelona and Panathinaikos, as well as last year's finalist, Benetton, over a three-week period. Montepaschi was practically reborn during the Top 16. After finishing the regular season at 7-7 in Group B, they improved in almost every category during the Top 16. Montepaschi scored 83 points per game during the Top 16, after scoring 77.4 points per night during the regular season. Their three-point average went from 39% to 43% (the best among the Final Four teams), they averaged nearly four more rebounds per game in the Top 16 and their free throw percentage has jumped from 67.3% to 74.8%.

Montepaschi's main advantage will be in the front court, where it has four interchangale power players - Giacomo Galanda, Roberto Chiacig, David Andersen and Mikalis Kakiouzis. Galanda and Chiacig are both former Skipper players and they will be extra motivated to beat their former club. Andersen, meanwhile, had one of his best games of the year against Skipper and he will be matched up at the power forward spot against his former Kinder Bolonga teammate, Matjaz Smodis, with whom he played in the 2002 Final Four in Bologna. Montepaschi's depends on its backcourt of Stefanov, Thornton and Vanterpool. Stefanov is the pure point guard who led the Top 16 in steals and is an expert at penetrating and finding teammates. Thornton and Vanterpool are both versatile, physical guards. They both do a great job rebounding and getting out on the fast break and their defensive pressure can choke the life out of opposing guards.

Skipper's advantage lies in its backcourt, where it has a-five man rotation. The starters are Gianluca Basile, Milos Vujanic and Carlos Delfino, while Gianmarco Pozzecco and AJ Guyton come off the bench and give an offensive spark. Basile and Vujanic have made the shots that landed Skipper in Tel Aviv. Skipper emerged out of Group B in third place with an 8-6 record and then won its last three games of the Top 16. Basile made the triple with five seconds left to knock off Efes Pilsen in Bologna and Vujanic's two free throws with three seconds remaining beat Pau-Orthez on the final game of the Top 16. Skipper was the second highest scoring team over the course of the Euroleague season behind only Maccabi, but coach Repesa insists that his team has made great improvements defensively as well. In fact, Skipper's defense improved from 83.8 to 76.2 points per game after the regular season.

The defensive leader is undoubtably Delfino, the athletic Argentine swing man who is capable of defending against three different positions. Pozzecco and Guyton are relied on for their instant offense. Poz, as he is known in Bologna, looks to push the ball at every opportunity and can put points on the board as quickly as any player in the Euroleague. Guyton is an excellent shooter and extremely dangerous when he looks to drive to the basket. Skipper will be shorthanded in the paint without Van Den Spiegel, but it is relying on the experience and toughness of Smodis while hoping that Mottola can find his offensive game and stay away from foul trouble. Skipper will also look to its young center Erazem Lorbek for some key minutes against Montepaschi's big front line, especially if Smodis and Mottola pick up early fouls.

These teams know each other very well from their four meetings this season and there will be no technical surprises. Both sides will be looking to get out on the fast break and control the rebounding war. The key questions will be whether Skipper can contain Montepaschi's big men and whether the Skipper guards can control the pace of the game. If Skipper falls behind, will Pozzecco and Guyton be ready with a hot shooting hand off the bench? These questions will be answered at 18:10 on Thursday night!

Quotes Head Coaches

RECALCATI, CARLO
Montepaschi Siena
"This practice is to prepare the game. It's a tactical practice. We arrive here in good shape. We will focus on preparing our defense. Over the course of the season we constructed a set of schemes, now we will mold them to fit this game."

Players

STEFANOV, VRBICA
Montepaschi Siena
"First of all, Skipper is a really good team, as they have shown in the Italian League and the Euroleague, and we expect a very tough game which will be decided in the final minutes. Our game will have to be based on good outside defense, but we also have to be smart in the offensive end. We also have to stop Skipper's fastbreaks, I think this is important."
ANDERSEN, DAVID
Montepaschi Siena
"It's a tough game. We have had hard battles against them. It is going to be a pretty hard game all 40 minutes long, and the pressure will be on for both teams. We have to control the transition points, play really hard defense, especially on the pick-and-rolls, and above all, play our style of basketball. We are in good shape."
KAKIOUZIS, MICHAILIS
Montepaschi Siena
"Well, it will be a difficult game for both sides, but I have to talk for my team. It's going to be really hard. Skipper arrives here in good shape, but we also do, so I think it will be tough for all. Nobody gave us a chance when the season started and now here we are, in the Final Four. We are playing better and better these last weeks so I can say we have a chance."
CHIACIG, ROBERTO
Montepaschi Siena
"It will be a difficult game, with two teams that will face each other to get to the final. It is going to be tough, and concentration is one of the keys. Both teams know each other very well, and the winner will be the one who makes the right decisions and stays more focused throughout the game. Skipper is used to playing fast, so it is important to stop their open-court game."
VUKCEVIC, DUSAN
Montepaschi Siena
"We feel ready to play. We've prepared all season for this situation. This final day before the game does not change much. What we need now is concentration from everybody here. I'm expecting everything to go as normal. That would be the best. No surprises."
GALANDA, GIACOMO
Montepaschi Siena
"It is always a pleasure to play these kinds of games. We will try not to feel the pressure. In my opinion we are very similar teams, us andSkipper. It's true that I have a lot of experience in the Euroleague but it's my first Final Four and it will be so nice to play here."
ZUKAUSKAS, MINDAUGAS
Montepaschi Siena
"These are two teams that have no secrets for each other. We will play open basketball. We have nothing to hide. Their power mainly resides at the three-point line, so if we manage to stop them there I think we can win. It looks like we are playing good basketball lately, let's hope we do it two more times this season. I feel well and I will be ready to play at 100 percent."
VUJANIC, MILOS
Skipper Bologna
"I'm only thinking about the game. I would play right now if we could. We know them well and there's nothing left to prepare. Tonight I'll probably just watch some basketball....that's the best thing to do at this point."
SMODIS, MATJAZ
Skipper Bologna
"I want to rest, eat well and try not to be disturbed by the security and the media. The last time I played in a Final Four [with Kinder Bologna in 2002] we were the favorites and there was extra pressure. This time is totally different. Now the pressure is on them. We've just got to stay together. We have nothing to lose."
MOTTOLA, HANNO
Skipper Bologna
"We know Montepaschi very well. They are in very good shape right now. We depend on ourselves, and we are prepared for the game. It will be a tough game, and the team that will manage to stay in focus for 40 minutes will go to the finals. I think the chances are 50-50".
BASILE, GIANLUCA
Skipper Bologna
"At this point it's the basic things that we're focused on. The last practice before the game was bland. We will do what we have prepared to do, there's nothing new to prepare. We know what to do on the court and we're not so concerned with new strategic issues."
VAN DEN SPIEGEL, TOMAS
Skipper Bologna
"This is not the time for physical strain or anything new. It's mental at this point. The last time that we were here [in Tel Aviv] we played a good game, so hopefully that will carry over. But we're playing Siena, not Maccabi, and they played well here too."
LORBEK, ERAZEM
Skipper Bologna
"Montepaschi Siena is a really good team, we have faced them four times this year and we have split wins, so we will see what happens tomorrow here in Tel Aviv. We have to give our best effort to win the game, and we will have to play hard defense to avoid fastbreak points. We will also try to run the court and make the difference that way. Personally, I will try to give my best, every minute I will be on court will be great. I am excited to be here."
MANCINELLI, STEFANO
Skipper Bologna
"It will be a different game from those we play in Italy or in the Euroleague regular season. We are a younger team but to me Siena is the clear favorite to win the semifinal. We also have experienced players in Pozzecco and Basile and I think that we play our normal game. What I mean is that I disagree with those who say that we only have power from long range. We try to be balanced."
GUYTON, ARTHUR JAMES
Skipper Bologna
"We know we can play with them. So now it's about being rested physically and mentally. You focus on the people that you've got to guard and who will guard you. I think that I'll go against Thornton and Vanterpool. I match up with those guys pretty well physically. Now it's about being ready to do battle."
After fighting off one comeback attempt after another, Skipper Bologna outlasted Montepaschi Siena 102-103 after overtime in their semifinal on Thursday in Tel Aviv to take a ticket to the Euroleague title game on Saturday. Carlos Delfino's free throw with 11.6 seconds left in overtime broke yet another tie and sent Skipper to its first European final ever. Lead changes and ties marked much of the fourth quarter and overtime, but it was appropriate that Delfino finished it, as he led Skipper with 27 points in 41 minutes on the floor. He had another protagonist to contend with, Mikalis Kakiouzis of Montepaschi, whose three-point sent the game to overtime 90-90. Each had big help. Matjaz Smodis scored 14 points, Hanno Mottola 12, J.A. Guyton 11 and Gianmarco Pozzecco 10 for Skipper, who won despite a 42-31 rebounding disadvantage. Bootsy Thornton led Montepaschi with 26 points, while Kakiouzis had 23, David Andersen 17, Vrbica Stefanov 14, David Vanterpool and Mindaugas Zukauskas 10 each.

Skipper coach Jasmin Repesa surprised everyone at the beginning of the game by inserting young center Erazem Lorbek in the starting lineup. While Lorbek battled on the boards, Delfino started the hostilities with a four-meter jumper for Skipper, but Zukauskas immediately answered in the other end and a Stefanov three-pointer gave Montepaschi a 2-5 lead. Stefanov continued to attack, scoring a fastbreak layup, but Basile followed with a three-pointer from the top of the arc to tie the game at 7-7. Skipper began to struggle against Montepaschi's aggressive man-to-man defense and Siena capitalized with a 7-0 run keyed by two more Stefanov baskets and a triple by Zukauskas to boost Montepaschi's lead to 14-7. Skipper did not give up, as a layup by Lorbek ignited a 0-10 run in which Delfino had 5 points and Matjaz Smodis hit a shot from downtown, enough for the Bologna team to regain the lead at 14-17. Skipper would not fall behind for the remainder of the quarter. Vanterpool quickly struck back with a triple, but Skipper controlled rhythm, playing the up-tempo style thats suits it best. Even with that, Vanterpool and Kakiouzis, who had come off the bench, combined 6 points in the final 2 minutes to bring Montepaschi within 20-21, before Vujanic made a coast-to-coast layup for a 20-23 Skipper lead after 10 minutes.

Stefano Mancinelli extended Skipper's lead to 20-25 with a fast break dunk to open the second quarter. The game turned into a defensive battle, with the teams missing six consecutive shots and playing disruptive defense. Montepaschi coach Carlo Recalcati called timeout, as Siena had made 9 of 22 shots at that point of the game. The timeout temporarily worked, as 2 foul shots and a corner three-pointer by Kakiouzis were enough to tie the game again at 27-27. The teams exchanged baskets, and even when Montepaschi had some second-chance points, they failed to regain the lead due to A.J. Guyton's 5 quick points. Vanterpool drilled 2 from the line to make it a one-point game at 33-34 midway through the second, as both teams tried small lineups in a prime time tactical battle. Skipper played with 4 guards and Tomas Van Den Spiegel as its only center. It functioned for a while, as Mancinelli and Basile combined 4 of 4 free throws for 33-38 Bologna lead. Siena dominated the boards, but could not find the way to the basket, as 4 consecutive points by a hyperactive Gianmarco Pozzecco and a bomb from downtown by Delfino gave Skipper a double-digit lead at 36-47, after a 0-9 run. Andersen drilled a four-meter jumper in the final seconds of the half to cut Skipper's lead to 38-47 at halftime, as 9 different players had scored for Bologna.

Montepaschi needed a quick comeback to avoid further trouble, and started the second half using Vanterpool as point forward and displaying a more physical man-to-man defense. Thornton and Vujanic exchanged threes in the early going, as Skipper entered the foul bonus too early. Nothing seemed to work for Montepaschi, however, as its scoring rhythm was low, while a floating layup by Vujanic and an uncontested dunk by Thomas Van Den Spiegel extended Bologna's lead to 41-54 after 23 minutes. Zukauskas stepped up with a three-point play, but Skipper carried on finding easy point in the paint. Vanterpool picked up his fourth foul soon after that and had to be replaced by playmaker Stefanov, who already had 3 fouls, too. Montepaschi had more troubles near the basket, however, as Smodis and Mottola scored back-to-back baskets in the low post to push the lead to 48-60. Skipper tried a small lineup in the final minutes of the third quarter, with Stefano Mancinelli at power forward, while Siena switched to zone defense. It worked, as a big basket by Stefanov and a three-point play off a steal by Kakiouzis made it a five-point game at 57-62. Skipper called timeout but kept its small lineup, as Montepaschi carried on rallying. Kakiouzis was Siena's go-to guy, scoring twice near the basket to bring Montepaschi within 62-64 entering the fourth, after a 14-4 final run.

The fourth period started with both teams scoring at full speed, as Guyton and Stefanov exchanged bombs from downtown. Thornton scored consecutive layups to let Montepaschi tie the game at 69-69, but Guyton scored his second three in 2 minutes, and Delfino followed it with one three-pointer of his own to give Skipper some fresh air against Siena's zone. Andersen kept Siena in the game with 2 mid-range shots and a turnaround jumper, but even with that, a two-pointer by Smodis made Skipper keep a slim lead at 75-77. The game was full of intensity in both ends of the court. Kakiouzis hustled like a titan to make a layup, while a tip-in by Vanterpool made Montepaschi regain tje lead at 79-77, its first one since the opening quarter. Even when both teams were playing hard defense, their offensive concentration was even higher. A free throw by Delfino tied the game again at 81-81 with under 3 minutes to go, and Mottola stepped up with a key three-pointer, forcing Montepaschi to call timeout with 2:19 to go. Vanterpool found Andersen for and easy basket, but Delfino drilled an open three-pointer on the other end, extending Skipper's lead to 83-87. Montepaschi set up a play for a three-point attempt by Kakiouzis, which he missed, but Montepaschi managed to regain possession with 1:02 to go. Andersen managed to make it a two-point game at 85-87 with 45 seconds remaining, but Mottola drew a foul and drilled both free throws to let Skipper keep a safe margin at 85-89. The game seemed to turn into a carousel of free throws, in which Thornton made 2 with 24.9 seconds to go, but Vujanic missed 1 of 2, making it a one-possesion game. Montepaschi managed to find Kakiouzis in the right corner, drilling a big three-pointer with 11.2 seconds to go, while Basile, Skipper's go-to guy in these kind of situations, missed the final shot in regulation, as the game went to overtime, 90-90.

Both teams failed to score early in the extra period in a game full of excitement, until Smodis drew Vanterpool's fifth foul and made 2 attempts from the line for a 90-92 Skipper lead. Bologna's defense excelled in overtime, forcing Montepaschi to committ a 24-second violation. Pozzecco and Thornton stepped up for their respective teams, scoring 4 points apiece for a 94-96 score, and Kakiouzis, once again, got a key three-point play to give Montepaschi its first lead in overtime, 97-96, with 2 minutes to go. Both teams missed consectuive possessions until Pozzecco found Smodis in open court for a basket-and -foul, which Thornton answered in the other end with yet another three-point play, the third in less than 2 minutes, enough to give Montepaschi a 100-99 lead with 1:19 to go. Skipper needed a go-to guy and Delfino, its best player tonight, drilled a three-pointer from the top of arch to make Bologna regain the lead at 100-102, as the sellout crowd could not believe their eyes. Thornton drew a foul on Smodis with 17.5 seconds remaining, tying the game at 102-102, but Kakiouzis fouled Delfino to give his team the final possesion. Delfino missed his first attempt, but made the second, enough to seal the win, as Dusan Vukcevic missed Montepaschi's last shot of the game. Vujanic missed two free throws with 0.9 seconds to go, the second one on purpose to put the victory on ice, helping Skipper to win one of the best games in European basketball history!

Head Coaches

RECALCATI, CARLO
Montepaschi Siena
"It was a great game. The two teams played in different games in different times of the game. We shot better in the first minutes but after that we played without the right balance in offense and at the same time allowed them what they like best: to play in the open court. The second half of the game was different. We improved defense and didn't let them so many open shots. We recovered and the game advanced point by point. I think it was great that the game ended with an overtime. We knew that Mottola was also a good three-point shooter, but they all played a good game."
REPESA, JASMIN
Skipper Bologna
"We made big mistakes at the beginning and allowed them to shoot triples. However we did the same in the following minutes and the score had many ups and downs. My team doesn't have enough experience. It is the youngest team in the Euroleague and 11 of my players had never played a Final Four before and the next thing youknow is that we are in the final. I already said that being here was the evidence of the great job we did in the season and it was a great game for my team to get more experience and get one step further. We knew we had to play concentrated and without pressure."

"It was probably my best game of the season, but I would trade that for a win. We couldn't get over the hump. We were two baskets away from getting a clear win, even with our foul trouble, Bootsy [Thornton] stepped up and played a great game and [Michalis] Kakiouzis had a good game, hustling for every ball. We let them have too many open looks to the basket. We needed to be more aggressive, but we cannot go back in time to make up for our mistakes."
KAKIOUZIS, MICHAILIS
Montepaschi Siena
"I am truly disappointed, we had a chance to win in the final shot and we missed it. Everybody is disappointed. We managed to stay in the game despite our foul troubles, even without Stefanov and Vanterpool, but that doesn't prevent me for being disappointed."
STEFANOV, VRBICA
Montepaschi Siena
"They got too many open shots, especially three-pointers. We had a good chance to win the game and we tried to give 100 percent, but we couldn't win the game. We will try to win the third and fourth game to give our fans something in return."
BASILE, GIANLUCA
Skipper Bologna
"They suffered from our pick-and-roll. Pozzecco and Vujanic were very effective. Then they played a strong zone and came back from 10 down. But in the end, the difference was we stayed calm and even though we made some errors, like giving up the three-pointer at the end of regulation, we were still good because we were covered with several players playing their game."
VUJANIC, MILOS
Skipper Bologna
"We proved again, it doesn't matter what people say. People have never respected us, but we still win. We'll see on Sunday. If we play Maccabi, I think it could be good for us, because they have pressure on them."
VAN DEN SPIEGEL, TOMAS
Skipper Bologna
"I told the coach I could play just this morning at shootaround. He asked me if I could, and I said I could help the team with energy, even if just for a few minutes. There's only one Final Four and it might have been the only chance for me to play in such a big game."
MOTTOLA, HANNO
Skipper Bologna
"Both teams had foul trouble tonight and it hurt both of us. We had some open looks. Our main goal going into the game was to stop their fastbreak. We didn't do it tongiht, but the fact that we still won is very encouraging. It wasn't a pretty game, but we just wanted it a little more".
GUYTON, ARTHUR JAMES
Skipper Bologna
"When you shoot well you play well and that is what happened here tonight. It was a one-on-one game in the score. I felt they were going back in the game, they were playing really calm and it was tough. I felt myself I had to take a couple of shots. I don't prefer any team in the final as they are both close to the NBA level, but it would be sweet to beat Maccabi on their floor."
DELFINO, CARLOS
Skipper Bologna
"The second half was real hard. However, we played well and despite our inexperience we played with confidence. I don't want to think about my performance to earn the MVP, the important thing is that Fortitudo came here as the underdog and now we are in the final. I'd love to play Maccabi in the final, we'd like to beat them at home in this great environment."
