THE TAKE

The top team in Group E visits the bottom on Thursday when winless Aris TT Bank hosts undefeated Tau Ceramica. But despite their recent records, the momentum could be going the other way. Aris is coming off an uplifting Greek League win over Panathinaikos, while Tau is suffering from injuries and coming off a Spanish League loss to the last placed team. Tau will be without forward Pete Mickeal against Aris and leading scorer Igor Rakocevic is a question mark after suffering a calf injury over the weekend. The game figures to be an intense one, since a win for Aris will completely shake up the standings. However a win for Tau should pave the way for head coach Neven Spahija’s crew, which will then play its next two games at home, to coast to the Quarterfinal Playoffs, while Aris, which then would be 0-3 with two home losses, would be practically out of chances. Aris’s star player has been power forward Jeremiah Massey, who leads his team in scoring, rebounds and blocked shots. Bracey Wright is the team’s top perimeter threat and point guard Darius Washington gradually become a more dominant piece in the team puzzle. Meanwhile Tau leans on center Tiago Splitter inside, while Zoran Planinic and point guard Pablo Prigioni shoulder more responsibility when Rakocevic is out. Aris will need some physical play out of starting center Hanno Mottola and backup Lazaros Agadakos to fend off Splitter and Will McDonald, while Massey will try to cause trouble in the paint at the other end facing Mirza Teletovic and Gabe Muoneke. Teletovic’s three-point shooting could create a quandary for Aris, since having Massey go outside cancels his defensive help and shot-blocking ability, but head coach Gordon Herbert surely won’t want him alone in the pain against Splitter due to fear of foul trouble. Two solutions could be sixth man Reyshawn Terry or Vladimer Boisa, however only Massey proves able to stick Splitter without complications. The Aris perimeter attack features fine outside shooters and good athletes in Washington, Wright and Dimitris Tsaldaris plus the experience of veteran Georgios Kalaitzis. Planinic and Prigioni are aided by small forwards Simas Jasaitis and Sergi Vidal. Rakocevic’s ability figures to be a key factor in the game. If he can’t go or is limited, Aris will have a clear point of attack, since Tau lacks a quality second stringer to go behind Prigioni and Planinic. However if he is 100%, Tau becomes the favorite to continue its recent good form and to prove that its last Spanish League result was an aberration.

Quotes Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Tau is a very tough opponent. After losing both our last Euroleague games, the upcoming game is considered as a do-or-die situation for Aris. That’s probably true but we don’t feel any pressure. We just beat Panathinaikos at home ending a negative losing series and showing that our team spirit works again. There are still chances to advance to the next round winning the rest of our games. However, we must take one at a time and now everybody should be focused on Tau. I hope that our fans will be next to my players and celebrate our first win at home in the Top 16."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"Honestly speaking, I think that what we did in Madrid against Estudiantes was a shame, both for my players and for me. This team needs and can make a better job in defense. When we are under pressure, the team reacts better. We average almost 90 points per game in the last month, so I think we are in a good moment. We must act with more responsibility, motivation and concentration. Aris is a very good team, who comes off a big win over Panathinaikos, so their morale should be quite high. Their most dangerous player are Washington, Wright and Massey, who take 60% of the shots."

KALAITZIS, GEORGIOS

"Tau is definitely among the best and toughest team in the Euroleague. It would be a great challenge for us after beating Panathinaikos at home last Sunday. To be honest, everyone should be ready to fight at any moment of the game in order to grab this win against a team like Tau. They are very physical and tough in defense and they run the court offensively very well executing accurately their drills. Undoubtedly, we still have chances to make it to the playoffs, especially if we beat Tau at home in front of a full Alexandreio."
Tiago Splitter - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica took a crucial step towards a Quarterfinal Playoffs qualification in Group E by thrashing Aris TT Bank 69-87 in Thessaloniki, Greece on Thursday. Tau now leads Group E with a perfect 3-0 record and, along with Montepaschi Siena in Group D, is one of just two undefeated teams halfway through the Top 16. Aris, meanwhile, dropped to 0-3 and needs a mejor turnaround to keep its playoff options alive. Sergi Vidal and Tiago Splitter paced the winners each with 16 points. Will McDonald barely missed a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds while Mirza Teletovic added 10 points for Tau. Bracey Wright had 24 points for Aris, Jeremiah Massey added 12 and 8 rebounds while Darius Washington got 10 for the hosts. A three-point play by Splitter gave Tau a 14-18 edge after 10 minutes. Tau improved its defense, while a 2-15 run that Gabe Mouneke capped with a triple broke the game open, 18-33, midway through the second quarter. Tau boosted its margin to 27-45 at halftime and kept a safe lead all the way until the final buzzer.

Both teams started the game in low gear, failing to find their offensive rhythm. Finally, Vidal found McDonald for a one-handed dunk that got the scoreboard rolling after 2 minutes. Aris responded with a reverse layup from Massey. He was bettered by Planinic, who scored first on the break and then from the arc to give the guests a 5-7 lead. While Aris kept struggling offensively, scoring mostly free throws, McDonald was a cut above his opponents in the paint and contributed 4 points and one assist to keep Tau ahead, 11-13. Wright loaded his pistol and knocked down his second consecutive triple to give the yellow hordes in the stands a reason to erupt. However, Tiago Splitter came from the bench to convert a three-point play and help Tau burst ahead 14-18 after 10 minutes of play.

Reyshawn Terry - Aris TT BankMassey opened the second quarter with a basket, but Aris was unable to turn the tide in its favor. With the score at 16-19, the Aris bench was given a technical foul and Tau used a 0-8 run in which Vidal scored 6 points to break the game open. Darius Washington cut the lead to 18-27, yet Tau was in total control of the match now. Simas Jasaitis and Gabe Muoneke caught fire and knocked down a barrage of three-pointers, as the guests' lead soared to 19-36. Aris was lackluster at both ends of the floor and neither a Dimitris Tsaldaris triple nor Wright's attempts could rejuvenate the hosts. A three-pointer by Tau floor general Pablo Prigioni widened the gap to 26-43. It was a clear indication of Tau's first-half domination, as the guests headed to the locker room with a resounding 27-45 halftime lead.

Tau launched the second half in style, with McDonald extending the advantage to the 20-point region. Wright provided a much needed spark with consecutive points from the free-throw line, but Tau was too good to let its opponents ruin its night. Soon, back-to-back triples by Teletovic pushed the guests' margin to 35-53. It was obvious at this point that unless the hosts could provide a much stronger defensive effort, they would not come back. This did not happen though. Reyshawn Terry, Massey, Wright and Washington carried Aris offensively, contributing the team's next 13 points, however on the other end Tau kept scoring at will. As a result, with Planinic and Prigioni running the show - they already had dished a total of 10 assists between them, six more than the whole Aris team - the guests breezed to a 48-66 lead with one quarter remaining.

Gabe Muoneke - Tau CeramicaNothing changed dramatically in the fourth quarter, as Tau found a new go-to guy in Splitter, who produced in the paint and allowed the guests to remain in charge. A pair of free throws by Vladimer Boisa trimmed the lead to 54-70, yet Splitter proved downright dominant, combining physical superiority with great skills. First he found Vidal in what was a perfect execution of the so-called triangle offense, then he scored a basket and finally added one more assist to his stat sheet, as Group E leader Tau galloped to an easy 69-87 away win.

Head Coaches

HERBERT, GORDON
Aris TT Bank
"Tau is the best team that has played here. We committed many turnovers, especially in the second quarter, something that teams like Tau always take advantage of. One important parameter of our play was the fact that we showed no team spirit, as it is evident in the limited number of assists – only 7. It's a pity because I thought that we could have won tonight."
SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"We did a good job and I would like to congratulate my players. It's always difficult to beat Aris here in Thessalonki, let alone with such a wide margin. As far as our future is concerned, I don't like planning too far ahead."

Players

KALAITZIS, GEORGIOS
Aris TT Bank
"We could have won the match tonight if we had played as a team, however this could never be the case given the way we played tonight. We wasted our energy after the 15th minute. It seems that our win against Panathinaikos got us carried away."
MCDONALD, WILL
Tau Ceramica
"We were well prepared in terms of tactics. Our target was to not let Massey be the focal point on Aris's offense. Tonight, we took an important step towards qualifying to the next stage, but we are determined to continue playing at full speed."
