THE TAKE

Lietuvos Rytas looks to become the first Group A team to clinch a spot in the elimination rounds when it hosts Brose Baskets Bamberg at Siemens Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania. L. Rytas leads the group with a 5-2 record, while Bamberg is tied for fifth at 2-5. Before topping AEK Athens last week, Brose Baskets' lone victory came at L. Rytas's expense, 78-77 in Week 3. De Juan Collins ran wild in that game, posting 20 points and 10 assists in a matchup of teams that were Top 16 opponents in the Euroleague last season. Collins has been the key to Brose Baskets's wins this season, posting 19 points against AEK last week. He is averaging 15.1 points and 5 assists so far. However Bamberg has averaged only 71 points per game this season – among the lowest in the competition. It is a threat on the offensive glass, hauling in a ULEB Cup second-best 12.9 offensive rebounds per game. It's biggest weakness is the fact that the team commits 16.1 turnovers per game with Collins, who is fifth in the league in assists, also fifth in turnovers (3.3 Topg). Brose Baskets has remained competitive through aggressive defense that results in 24.1 fouls per game. After Collins, the team's top threats are big men Zelly Wesson (13.4 ppg., 7 rpg.) and Darren Fenn. L. Rytas passes for 16.3 assists per game – second in the ULEB Cup – and averages 84 points per game. It is an efficient attack, making 56.8% of two-point shots. Playmaker Roberts Stelmahers (3.3 apg.) and forward J.P. Batista lead the team with 11.3 points per game each, while scorer Andrius Slezas (10.9 ppg., 42.9 3FG) and swingman Andre Emmett (10.4 ppg.) round out a balanced attack. Big men Matt Nielsen (8.4 ppg., 5.4 rpg.) and Eureljus Zukauskas will need to play big inside to shut down Bamberg's interior attack. As the regular season draws to a close, you can count on both teams giving their best as the Lithuanian champs look to clinch a spot in the next round and Brose Baskets tries to keep its slim chances alive.

Matthew Nielsen - Lietuvos Rytas Group A leader Lietuvos Rytas took the honor of joining the first qualifiers to the ULEB Cup eighthfinals round when it downed visiting Brose Baskets Bamberg 81-62 at home in Vilnius, Lithuania on Tuesday. L. Rytas raised its record to 6-2 and improved on the likelihood that it can hold onto first place through the end of the regular season. Bamberg stays in last place after falling to 2-6. Injury-plagued L. Rytas blew open a game that had been tied at halftime with a 24-7 third quarter, including a 14-0 run that made clear its own qualification and Bamberg's near elimination. Marijonas Petravicius led the winners with 12 points, most in the first half. Joao Batista added 11, Janis Blums and Arturas Jomantas 10 each. Matt Nielsen just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds for the winners, who owned the backboards with a 40-24 rebounding advantage. Bamberg got 18 points from De Juan Collins, 11 from Darren Fenn and 10 from Robert Garrett.

L. Rytas, playing without injured starters Roberts Stelmahers and Eurelijus Zukauskas, went up 4-0 on an early layup by Matthew Nielsen but saw K'Zell Wesson and Collins push in difficult shots to tie 4-4. Petravicius answered with 5 straight points to put the hosts ahead 9-6. Brose Baskets stayed close as Collins nailed a pair of jumpers, but otherwise couldn't convert their chances to go ahead. Tomas Delininkaitis finally made a free throw to end 2 minutes of silence and make the score 12-10. Bamberg took advantage of the hosts' sluggishness as fresh-off-the-bench Darren Fenn landed a three-pointer that sent the visitors ahead for the first time, 17-18. L. Rytas woke up then and intensified its defense, and even regained a 21-18 lead, but veteran Robert Garret squeezed in a three-pointer and Collins made free throws as Bamberg led 21-23 after 10 minutes. Fenn got the second quarter going with a mid-range jumper that Delininkaitis answered with free throws. L. Rytas switched to full court pressure on defense, which worked as Bamberg scored only 2 points in the first 3 minutes of the second quarter. L. Rytas couldn't score either, however, and finally Garrett broke the ice with a mid-range jumper that increased the visitors' lead to 23-27. Andrius Slezas boosted the hosts with a triple and L. Rytas got back in the driver's seat at 29-28 after 17 minutes. Bamberg replied immediately as Collins and Fenn scored 5 free throws to end the first half with the scoreboard dead even at 34-34.

Darren Fenn - Brose BasketsPetravicius looked persistant on the offensive boards as he started the third quarter with a difficult put-back. Collins was walked off the court looking injured, but Bamberg found the answer in Garret, who hit a cozy turnaround jumper to tie 36-36. After Petravicius and Jomantas dropped 4 free throws, the hosts looked to have seized control of the game. The feeling was strenghtened on another L. Rytas attack as Jomantas penetrated for a bucket-plus-free throw. A pair of timeouts didn't help Bamberg as Delininkaitis, Nielsen and Jomantas pushed the lead to double digits and completed a crushing 14-0 run with L. Rytas in control at 50-36. Collins came back and ended Bamberg's 7 minutes of scoring silence with free throws, but Jomantas continued to shine. This time he fed Mindaugas Lukauskis for a fantastic basket-plus-free throw that boosted the margin to 53-38. Free throws by Collins were again surpassed by a Titus Ivory three-pointer, leaving a decisive 58-41 score after three quarters. There was not much to decide though, as the fourth quarter seemed only a formality. L. Rytas kept its rhythm and boosted the margin even more when Slezas landed a triple to restore a 20-point advantage, 61-41. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way, but Bamberg could find no way to initiate a run and cut the lead. L. Rytas was moving to the next round and Bamberg had to pray its slim chances remained.

Head Coaches

SAGADIN, ZMAGOSLAV
Lietuvos Rytas
"I'm happy that we won this game. We played great defense and it is very important that we won by not so few points because we may need an extra advantage in the point-differential when fighting for a better final place in the group. The most important part of the game was the third quarter when we played great defensively. We kept our lead and won. We were very nervous today because Stelmahers and Zukauskas are injured and Emmett is gone too and I see only seven or eight players in the gym during practice sessions. We showed that we can win even without great shooting. Jomantas is doing better and better every day. He's giving this enormous agrresiveness to the team. The rest of the team followed him in defense and we were able to destroy Brose in the third quarter."
BAUERMANN, DIRK
Brose Baskets
"Congratulations to coach Sagadin. I thought that in the first half we executed our gameplan well and controlled the tempo of the game. But Lietuvos Rytas got off to a better start after halftime. They put more defensive pressure on us, they moved the ball better and we missed a lot of easy shots. Right now our team simply doesn't do a good job fighting back. We've had the problem in the past of losing our focus, concentration and quality for a whole quarter. As we saw, it happened in the third quarter of this game and it cost us a game. I wish Lietuvos Rytas the best luck in the rest of the competition. I'm pretty sure they're gonna go pretty far because they are a very good team with a great coach. In the first game, our crowd enabled us to play better defense. We played much better in defense in Germany."

Players

PETRAVICIUS, MARIUS
Lietuvos Rytas
"Our opponents' shooting was awful, not like in the first game in Bamberg which we lost. Besides, we intensified our defense after halftime and started to dominate the boards. Maybe Brose gave up too early. The game in Germany was totally different, they simply shot a lot better that time."
JOMANTAS, ARTURAS
Lietuvos Rytas
"I think the key to the victory was our defense. It was great, especially after halftime. I think my game was average. May it be that I was the one who initiated the big run in the third quarter, may it be I scored 10 points, got 8 rebounds and drew 9 fouls but I am only a part of the team. I only work for the team. Nobody cares about individual stats if a team can't reach a victory."
