THE TAKE

Panathinaikos puts its 12-game home-court Euroleague winning streak on the line when it hosts Fenernahce Ulker on Thursday at the Athens Indoor Olympic Hall. The game is important for both sides. The reigning Euroleague champ can seal first place in Group C and a top seed in the Top 16 draw with a win or a Real Madrid loss in another Thursday game. Meanwhile Fenerbahce Ulker can clinch a spot in the Top 16 with a victory or with a loss by either Partizan Belgrade or Cibona Zagreb. The high-scoring Greens put on a rare defensive showing, holding the Turkish champs to a season-low in points scored in a 64-83 road win when the teams met earlier this season in Istanbul. Sarunas Jasikevicius paced Panathinaikos with 19 points that night. With the exception of veteran center Dejan Tomasevic, who is out for at least two months after back surgery, the Greens have a full roster ready to go, which could spell trouble for the short-handed visitors. The participation of Fenerbahce power forward Mirsad Turkcan, Euroleague Basketball’s all-time leading rebounder and the leading rebounder this season, is in question due to an ankle injury. Turkcan could have a big role in this game since Panathinaikos is among the worst rebounding teams in the competition. Center Semih Erden is also sidelined for Fener, though Oguz Savas and Damir Mrsic are back and ready to play. The key for Fenerbahce is star guard Willie Solomon, who is third in the Euroleague in both scoring ans assists, averaging career-highs in both. But Solomon could have a rough time against Panathinaikos’s super deep backcourt, featuring no less than five senior guards, including three-time Euroleague Best Defender award winner Dimitrios Diamantidis. Meanwhile Jasikevicius and big man Mike Batiste are the only players averaging double figures in points for the Panathinaikos attack that averages 82 points per game. The hot hand has recntly been with Kostas Tsartsaris, who is averaging 19.5 points over the past two games after posting 5.9 points per game in the first 10 games this season. Fener’s best hopes are for Turkcan and the team’s young big men to dominate the glass, while Solomon has a flawless performance to stun the champs. Otherwise the clearly favored Greens figure to reall off another home win as they aim for a spot at the Final Four in Madrid to defend their title.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"Our last home game in the regular season is very important for us, since we want to beat Fenerbahce Ulker to assure the first place of Group C. This is our last performance in OAKA before the Top 16 and definitely we want to perform well and please our fans, who have been very supportive. We saw our opponents on video and with no doubt they will be very motivated to beat us, especially after their recent victory in the Turkish derby over Efes Pilsen. So, we have to play very seriously and with high concentration to add one more victory and stay atop of Group C one day before the end."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"This is going to be another big challenge against the greatest team in the Euroleague. There’s nothing much to say about Panathinaikos except that they are not just the leaders of our group, but the most powerful candidate for the title. Last week, we didn’t have the desire to win the game against Brose Baskets. We could qualify to the Top 16 easily if we were able to beat them. But we still have the chance to do it so. We need more desire to win and to recover the loss against Brose Baskets. Of course, we will try to win against Panathinaikos to take the ticket. But we will have our chances still in our hands if we lose, too."

TSARTSARIS, KOSTAS
Panathinaikos
"Fenerbahce Ulker is a very capable team. We watched their previous games and we know how good their psychology is after the domination over Efes Pilsen in the Turkish League. A win over Fenerbahce Ulker assures the first place mathematically and this is a high motivation for Panathinaikos. We still suffer from injuries, but as many big guys are left, all of us will fight to cover our teammates' absences. Furthermore, we are used to difficulties and I remind you that during the previous season we always had problems with the big guys and finally won all three titles. What I want to say is that we never stop fighting to fulfill our high goals and move step by step towards them."
ONAN, OMER
Fenerbahce Ulker
"I believe that there’s no such team that can’t be beaten in Euroleague competition. But of course, if there’s a team that is the hardest one to beat it is Panathinaikos for sure. They built up their own tradition in the previous years under the great coach Zeljko Obradovic and are still running fast. We are just at the first steps of the road, which they moved many years ago. But we are on the right path, too. We are a young, but talented team, which can make the surprise that we missed in Istanbul. And we will try to do it with all our aim."
Sarunas Jasikevicius - Panathinaikos Panathinaikos became the Group C champion by thrashing Fenerbahce Ulker 88-68 at the Athens Indoor Olympic Arena on Thursday. Panathinaikos improved to 12-1, kept the best record in the competition and enters the Top 16 draw as one of the top-seeded teams. Meanwhile, Fenerbahce dropped to 6-7, but had already qualified for the Top 16 on Wednesday, when Cibona’s loss meant sent the Turkish champs through. Sarunas Jasikevicius paced the winners with 23 points, Vassilis Spanoulis added 12 and Mike Batiste grabbed 11 rebounds for the Greens. Tarence Kinsey led Fenerbahce with 20 points and Gasper Vidmar and James White added 12 each for Fenerbahce, which played without rebounding ace Mirsad Turkcan and whose superstar Willie Solomon was limited to just 5 points. Panathinaikos led 16-15 after 10 minutes but an outstanding Jasikevicius helped the Greens to a 42-29 halftime lead. Nothing changed after the break, as outstanding ball circulation allowed Panathinaikos to boost its margin to 70-47 after 30 minutes, enough to seal the outcome long before the final buzzer.

In front of a boisterous crowd, both teams came out flat committing back-to-back turnovers. After two scoreless minutes, Omer Onan fired in a triple from the corner to get the scoreboard rolling. Andrija Zizic responded with a layup, only to be followed by Vidmar’s three-point play that made it 2-6. Panathinaikos was clearly out of rhythm offensively, until Nikos Hatzivrettas came up big with 4 quick points to tie the game at 9-9. The hosts did not capitalize on their opponents struggles at the free-throw line, so when Solomon unleashed a three-ball, Fenerbahce regained the lead. However, Batiste saved the last word for himself, as he muscled his way for a basket and the free-throw that came with it to put the Greens in front 16-15 after 10 minutes.

Gasper Vidmar - Fenerbahce UlkerThe second quarter got underway with Jasikevicius providing the brains and Demos Dikoudis scoring, so it wasn’t long before Panathinaikos built a double-digit lead. A pair of Jasikevicius free throws capped a decisive 9-0 run that boosted the margin to 32-19, while at the other end Fenerbahce was struggling against the zone-defense – scoring only with free throws and missing numerous open shots. Eventually, after almost seven minutes and a couple of timeouts by Fener head coach Bogdan Tanjevic, White found his way to the basket. However Panathinaikos was now in high gear offensively. As a result, the momentum of the game did not shift and the hosts widened the gap to 42-29 at intermission.

Early on in the second half, Kinsey picked up the scoring slack, but so did Jasikevicius. He drilled a triple and then after Kinsey was given a technical foul, Saras knocked down 2 free throws and a long jumper to extend the lead to 49-33. Fragiskos Alvertis came off the bench to up the ante with back-to-back three-pointers, which widened the lead to 59-39 and brought the crowd to its feet. With admiral Jasikevicius navigating the ship, the Greens were unstoppable offensively. Soon a corner triple by the Lithuanian master put any hopes of a Fenerbahce comeback out of reach, as Panathinaikos rushed to a 70-47 lead with one period remaining.

Kinsey opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play to show that he was not willing to go down without a fight. However, as indicated by the subsequent jaw-dropping fast-break passing play by Panathinaikos’s backcourt players that led to an uncontested Spanoulis layup, the hosts were too confident to be stunned by any late heroics now. Even though down the stretch White threw down a thunderous dunk and Omer Asik rejected Dikoudis’s dunk attempt, there was no turning back as Panathinaikos cruised to the win.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"It was a very important game for us. I am very satisfied with the way we played tonight and for having secured the first place in our regular season group. We played good defense and managed to stop their key players, such as Willie Solomon. Our problem was that the tempo of the game was very slow in the first half, so we decided to play with 3 guards in order to play faster. Congratulations to my players for everything they have done so far and thanks to the fans for once again creating a great atmosphere to play in."
TANJEVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Tonight I did not expect to be beaten this easily. I thought it was going to be a much closer game, not one that would finish with a 20-point margin. We played defense for only two quarters, unlike our opponents who were effective throughout the game. We will try to win the next game against Partizan and manage to finish fourth in our regular season group. We will also wait for our injured players to come back to play better basketball. Finally, I want to add that the fans were fantastic tonight."

Players

HATZIVRETTAS, NIKOS
Panathinaikos
"It was a crucial game for us, because the win gave us the first place in this group. We achieved one of the goals that we set at the start of the season. We should keep going and get ready for the Top 16. We played very well tonight, even though we came out flat early in the game. However, minute after minute, we improved our performance and overall I hope that we pleased our fans."
WHITE, JAMES
Fenerbahce Ulker
"Panathinaikos is a very good team, so coming in to the game we knew that it was going to be difficult playing them at home. They are one of the best teams in Europe. We tried our best, but things didn’t turn out right in the beginning so everything went downhill. One of the problems tonight was that we missed a lot of open shots and we committed many turnovers. I think that we played good enough defense in the first half, but it just didn't pay off in offense. I played OK, but I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted to due to foul trouble."
