THE TAKE

Olympiacos will look to remain tied for the top spot in Top 16 Group E when it hosts Asseco Prokom at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Thursday night. Olympiacos is tied with Tau Ceramcia and Armani Jeans Milano at 2-1 in the group as it tries to secure a berth in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Tau and Armani Jeans square off in Italy on Wednesday. Meanwhile the Polish champs are without a Top 16 win and would see their playoff hopes vanish with another loss. Prokom’s hopes are already small after suffering a 68-93 loss at the hands of the Reds two weeks ago. Veteran center Nikola Vujcic was at his best that game with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in just 22 minutes to pace the Olympiacos attack. This game will be a homecoming of sorts for Prokom forward Qyntel Woods, who made his European debut last season for Olympiacos. The visitors, who are winless on the road this season, come into the game knowing that they must improve their interior defense to have any prayer of winning. Last time Olympiacos shot 26 for 32 from the paint for the game and outrebounded Prokom 20-39. Vujcic leads a deep frontline for head coach Panagiotis Giannakis that also features Ioannis Bourousis, Sofoklis Schortsanitis and Zoran Erceg plus forwards Panos Vasilopoulos and Georgios Printezis. Prokom will try to answer with Pat Burke and Adam Hrycaniuk at center and Woods, Ronnie Burrell, Filip Dylewicz and Koko Archibong at forward. The Reds have a deeper backcourt with Yotam Halperin, Lynn Greer, Jannero Pargo, Theo Papaloukas and Milos Teodosic, compared to Prokom’s trio David Logan, Dan Ewing and Tyrone Brazelton. Sharp shooter Przemyslaw Zamojski is instant offense for head coach Tomas Pacesas and could be the x-factor. Olympiacos is the overwhelming favorite to win the game, however if the Reds come in overconfident, they could open up a door for a Prokom surprise. Olympiacos is coming off defeat in the Greek Cup final and has a Greek League game against archrival Panathinaikos set for this weekend, so it is not implausible to think the Reds’ focus could eb elsewhere. Still Burke and co. must be tough inside and the guards will need to have great shooting nights for the visitors to have a chance.

GAME NOTES

Olympiacos
  • Guard Theo Papaloukas leads the Euroleague with 5.1 assists per game. He has recorded at least 4 assists in 14 consecutive Euroleague games dating back to last season’s Euroleague championship game.
  • Papaloukas has not missed a two-point shot in his last nine games! He has converted 22 consecutive two-point shots since mid-November. The veteran point guard has made 34 of 40 two-point shots in 13 games this season.
  • Center Nikola Vujcic recorded the first triple-double of Euroleague Basketball history against Prokom in the 2005-06 season opener. Vujcic, then with Maccabi Tel Aviv, recorded 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in guiding his team to a 95-68 win. He was named MVP for the week after that performance.
  • Vujcic scored a season-high 21 points against Prokom in the game two weeks ago. Vujcic also dished 4 assists and has had at least 4 assists in all three Top 16 games so far.
  • Guard Lynn Greer spent the 2003-04 season playing in Poland for Slask Wroclaw, with whom he led the Euroleague in scoring with 25.1 points per game as well as the Polish League with 20.4 points per game. Greer also helped Wroclaw win the 2004 Polish Cup and played in the 2004 Polish All-Star Game, where he was named MVP.
  • Olympiacos and Prokom have played one against the other in every Euroleague season since 2004-05. So far they have played four times in the regular season and this is the first season they meet each other in the Euroleague Top 16.
Asseco Prokom
  • Center Pat Burke was held to a season-low 2 points the last time these two teams met two weeks ago. That ended a streak of five straight games in double figures in points.
  • Forward Qyntel Woods will visit his former home this week. Woods made his Euroleague debut last season with Olympiacos and played under its head coach Panagiotis Giannakis and alongside six of its current players.
  • Guard David Logan has recorded at least 1 steal in 12 straight games this season. Logan has scored in double figures and drilled at least 1 three-pointer in eight straight games.
  • Asseco Prokom has lost 11 consecutive Euroleague road games dating back to November 2007 when it beat Virtus Bologna 75-87 in Italy. Not a single player that scored in that game is on Prokom’s current roster. The first of those 11 loses came at Olympiacos, 109-65, when Qyntel Woods had 22 for the Reds.

Quotes Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"The upcoming game against Prokom is totally different than the recent one in Poland. That's because the data is much different now than two weeks before. We face every game with the same seriousness and respect to the opponents. All of them have high motivation when they face Olympiacos, so we have to be serious and concentrated to accomplish one more win in the Top 16. This is the best way to be better day by day."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Our last game against Olympiacos taught us a lot. My players could only admire such players like Vujcic, Price, Papaloukas and others. I hope that this time we will show much better defense and more creativity in offense than two weeks ago."

Players

GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"Our recent win in Poland annihilated their hopes to make the play offs and that makes them dangerous since they are coming without pressure. When you face teams that have nothing to lose, you need extra attention. They are a team with good players that can hurt you if you allow it. Meanwhile, we have to adjust in every circumstance and leave the Greek Cup Final against Panathinaikos behind us. Only Prokom is in our minds."
DYLEWICZ, FILIP
Asseco Prokom
"I was an optimist before the last game against Olympiacos but the team from Greece proved that it can think seriously about the Final Four this season. I was really impressed by their performance but - playing basketball many years - I know that you have always a chance to win the game, even against the strongest opponent. I can promise that we will keep on fighting to the end of the game."
Nikola Vujcic - OlympiacosHolding onto its share of first place in Group E, Olympiacos pulled away in the second half to beat Asseco Prokom 84-71 for its third straight victory on Thursday at Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece. Olympiacos improved to 3-1 and remains tied for the top in Group E alongside Tau Ceramica. The Reds host Armani Jeans Milano (2-2) next week before facing Tau in the Top 16 finale, which will decide the group winner and homecourt advantage for the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Prokom was strong for 20 minutes and trailed by just a point at the break, but the Reds overpowered the Polish champs in the second half and sent Prokom to its 11th consecutive defeat. Nikola Vujcic paced the Olympiacos attack with 20 points on 10-for-13 shooting. Georgios Printezis added 14 points, while Ioannis Bourousis posted 13 and 11 rebounds to help the Reds outrebound their opponents 42-29. Theo Papaloukas scored 13 points and dished 6 assists. Davin Logan led Prokom with 24 points, while former Olympiacos forward Qyntel Woods, who was given a warm applause by the home crowd, had 12 points, the same as teammate Dan Ewing, in defeat.

David Logan - Asseco ProkomPat Burke scored with a nice post move to open the game for Prokom, but Olympiacos fed the ball inside too, with Vujcic connecting for three straight baskets to help Olympiacos to a 9-4 lead. The hosts were now playing with increased confidence as Printezis nailed a thee-pointer and ran the floor to cap a 12-0 run with a slam that made it 14-4. Logan found the opportunity to finish a fastbreak with a slam dunk to cut the difference to 16-8 and later on fired in a triple for 18-11. Vujcic was unstoppable, though, reaching double figures after 7 minutes of play to make it 20-11. Filip Dylewicz and Woods trimmed the difference further, to 20-15. Logan kept on connecting for Prokom with another 4 points of his own that brought the guests even closer, 20-19. Woods ended the action-packed quarter with a nice tip-in to beat the buzzer at 23-21, but still in favor of Olympiacos.

Papaloukas chipped in a three-pointer for 26-21 to start the second quarter, but Prokom found the answers and soon tied at 26-26 thanks to a triple by Woods. The visitors' perimeter players chose to give Papaloukas the opportunity to shoot from behind the arc and Papaloukas did not miss, finding the target twice in the row to push Olympiacos ahead by 34-26. The Olympiacos captain was not finished, either, as he now slammed to make it 36-26. But neither was Prokom done. Logan added another three-pointer, Ronnie Burrell a difficult corner jumper and a tip-in, while Adam Hrycaniuk scored with a layup to bring Prokom within a basket, 36-34. The guests lost the chance to take the lead, however, when Woods missed a three-pointer. Vujcic responded with his seventh basket in as many attempts and Printezis added a triple to make it 43-36. Prokom wouldn't back down, and found the way to 6 consecutive points as Logan nailed an off-balance three-pointer and Burrell finished a nice layup-plus-free throw to leave Olympiacos with a mimumum lead, 43-42, at the break.

Theo Papaloukas - OlympiacosA magnificent assist by Vujcic resulted in a basket-plus-free throw by Printezis to start the second half at 46-42. Yotam Halperin punished Prokom's zone defense with a three-pointer from the corner to make it 49-42. Burke was the first Prokom shooter to connect after halftime, but it was obvious that Olympiacos was dictating the tempo; Halperin added another triple, this time from the opposite corner, while Vujcic sent in a hook shot for a 52-44 scoreboard. Ewing landed a difficult three-pointer, but Printezis immediately increased the margin to 58-47. Olympiacos continued to find open shots from the weak side as Janero Pargo made a shot from behind the arc at 63-51. Dylewicz scored on an offensive rebound, but Vujcic, Bouroussis and Michalis Pelekanos combined to post the Reds' biggest lead so far, 70-55, after 30 minutes.

Ewing dunked for Prokom to start the fourth quarter, but Pargo drilled another three-pointer in response. Hrycaniuk, Logan and Woods were not ready to surrender, though; they combined for 7 unanswered points to cut the difference to 73-64 as Prokom seemed now to find offensive solutions with ease. Milos Teodosic stepped up for Olympiacos with a timely three-pointer to curb the visitors' enthusiasm at 76-64. Logan answered from downtown on the shot-clock buzzer, while Woods trimmed it more, to 76-70, with 4 minutes, 30 seconds left. To stop that challenge, Bouroussis bore offensive responsibility for Olympiacos to down consecutive baskets, returning the lead to double digits, 80-70. A couple of defensive minutes followed Vujcic put back an offensive rebound to end all suspense as Olympiacos won 84-71 and stayed in first place.

Head Coaches

GIANNAKIS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"We were focused in the third quarter, controlled the game and sealed a win that will help us to improve our status in the Euroleague competition. It's not fair to judge us according to one shot, one turnover or one bad result. We have to study further any game. We are working hard in that area and by the time we reach that point we will be really effective and results will come. So far, we are where our fans want us to be, fighting for a spot in the Euroleague quarterfinals and at top place in the Greek League."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Asseco Prokom
"Congratulations to Olympiacos for its win. We managed to hold them from running away soon. I am happy we made a good comeback and trimmed the margin to six points. However, at that point, we missed some crucial rebounds and that was the factor that decided the game."

Players

GREER, LYNN
Olympiacos
"We had control of the game, but never really ran away. We built a safe difference and then made some mistakes that allowed Prokom to cut it. It was a game that we had to win and we just did that. We are now preparing for the game against Panathinaikos in the Greek League."
WOODS, QYNTEL
Asseco Prokom
"It's nice to come back to Athens and play in front of Olympiacos's fans. I felt really excited with their warm applause and I will always remember them for their great support. I think that we had the opportunity to stress Olympiacos more down the stretch, but lost a bunch of defensive rebounds that gave the hosts second chances. I think we are improving as a team. I wish Olympiacos the best."
