THE TAKE

Two perennial Final Four hopefuls will start their seasons on Wednesday when Tau Ceramica hosts Climamio Bologna. Climamio reached the Euroleague Final in 2004, while Tau Ceramica made it to the title game last season. Both teams lost to back-to-back Euroleague champs Maccabi in the Final. Both teams had their moments last season, but it was Tau which had the last laugh. Climamio started the season on fire and raced through the regular season with a 12-2 record, but a lost to Tau in the first game of the Top 16 would haunt the Italian champs, as they missed the quarterfinals on a tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Tau, which started the season 6-8 and needed a tiebreaker just to reach the Top 16, put together a five-game winning streak at the best of times to advance into the quarterfinals, where it swept Benetton, and then into the Final Four, where it upset CSKA, before falling to Maccabi in the title game. There are numerous returnees on both sides this season who will face off in the season-opener. Kornel David, who had 22 points and 8 rebounds in defeat in the second of last year's meetings, still mans the paint for Tau, while forward Sergi Vidal, who came of the bench for 14 points and 9 boards in the first game can expect a bigger role this year. And you can't overlook first team all-Euroleague performer Luis Scola. Bologna still has big center Dalibor Bagaric, 2004-05 Euroleague Rising Star award winer Erazem Lorbek, forward Stefano Mancinelli and homegrown talent Marco Belinelli. However, it's the teams' newcomers that will be watched closely and could make the biggest difference on opening night. Predrag Drobnjak returns to Europe after a four-year NBA career to start at center for Tau, Casey Jacobsen makes his European debut after three NBA seasons and playmaker Roko-Leni Ukic spurned has also joined the team. Bologna has added guard Sani Becirovic, who resurrected his career last season after injuries nearly ended it, playmaker Nate Green, and Euroleague-winning forward Nestoras Kommatos among others to an already talented roster. Teamwork and chemistry will be the keys for both teams on opening night as the coaches try to piece together the right combination for success. While that happens, be sure not to miss the key match-ups inside as Lorbek looks to prove himself against Scola and Drobnjak.

THE STAKES

It's now or never for Caja Laboral, playing at home against the reigning champs. Panathinaikos will be anxious to keep its momentum and make it to the Final Four without having to play a Game 4 in Vitoria that could even the series.

INJURIES

Caja Laboral leading scorer Teletovic is expected to play despite missing the fourth quarter of Game 2 with a sore back. Panathinaikos made the trip without Stratos Perperoglou, who has flu, and without Aleks Maric, who is out for the series.

THE TAKE

The Panathinaikos offense has generated easy points in the paint despite the presence of Caja Laboral shot blocker Stanko Barac. If that continues unchecked, the devoted fans in Vitoria may have little to cheer about. If Teletovic returns on form, however, his three-point shooting at home this season (66%) is so remarkable as to give Caja Laboral a good chance in any close game.

Game notes, FC Barcelona Regal

Game notes, Panathinaikos
  • Regal FC Barcelona’s seven-game winning streak is the longest active streak in the Euroleague.
  • Barcelona has won six consecutive Euroleague home games at Palau Blaugrana.
  • Terence Morris needs 2 more blocked shots to reach the 100-block mark. He is ninth on the career list and will tie former Maccabi Tel Aviv big man Maceo Baston for eighth when he rejects his 100th shot.
  • Juan Carlos Navarro needs 3 steals to catch Zalgiris scorer Marcus Brown for 10th place on the Euroleague Basketball alltime steals charts. Navarro currently has 181 career steals.
  • Navarro was the Top 16’s leading scorer with 20 points per game.
  • Navarro has made at least 1 three-pointer in each of his last eight Euroleague games played.
  • Jaka Lakovic needs 8 more steals to become the eighth player in Euroleague Basketball history to record 200 steals.
  • Lakovic is set to make his 199th career Euroleague appearance, which will tie him with injured teammate Gianluca Basile for the third most games played in competition history.
  • Lakovic played for Panathinaikos from 2002 through 2006, winning four straight Greek League titles and three Greek cups with the Greens. He was coached by Zlejko Obradovic and played alongside current Panathinaikos players Mika Batiste, Kostas Tsartsaris, Antonis Fotsis and Dimitris Diamantidis during his time there.
  • Joseph Ingles and Panathinaikos center Aleks Maric are teammates on the Australian national team. They both played important roles for the Boomers at the FIBA World Championships last summer.
  • Barcelona leads the Euroleague in two-point shooting accuracy this season at 58.4%.
  • Dimitris Diamantidis leads the Turkish Airlines Euroleague in assists this season with an average of 5.9 per game.
  • Diamantidis needs 1 more assist to become the seventh player in Euroleague Basketball history with 500 career assists.
  • Diamantidis needs 13 more assists to achieve one of the top 10 single-season marks in that category in Euroleague history. Diamantidis has 94 assists this season. Milos Teodosic in 2009-10 with Olympiacos and DeJuan Collins in 2007-08 with Zalgiris are currently tied for ninth place.
  • Head coach Zeljko Obradovic has used 10 different players in the starting lineup this season. Not one Panathinaikos player has started every game.
  • Panathinaikos has made (296) and attempted (387) more free throws than any other Euroleague team this season.
  • Mike Batiste needs 33 more points to reach the 2,000-point plateau for his Euroleague career. He would be the ninth player to achieve that mark.
  • Romain Sato played briefly for FC Barcelona at the end of the 2005-06 season. He was a teammate there of current Barca players Juan Carlos Navarro, Roger Grimau, Victor Sada and Gianluca Basile. Barcelona head coach Xavi Pascual was an assistant coach on that team.
  • Drew Nicholas scored a season-high 18 points in the Top 16 finale against Unicaja.
  • Nicholas was a college teammate of Regal FC Barcelona big man Terence Morris for two seasons between 1999 and 2001 at the University of Maryland. They helped the Terrapins reach the 2001 NCAA Final Four.
  • Antonis Fotsis needs 5 more steals to reach 100 for his Euroleague career.
  • Milenko Tepic and Regal FC Barcelona center Kosta Perovic were teammates during the 2006-07 season at Partizan Belgrade, where they won the Serbian and Adriatic League titles. They are also teammates on the Serbian national team, with whom they won silver medals at EuroBasket 2009 and appeared at the 2010 FIBA World Championships.
  • Panathinaikos edged Barcelona 67-66 in the 1996 Euroleague title game in Paris to win its first European championship.

Two proud runners-up from the last two Euroleague seasons went toe-to-toe like heavyweights before Tau Ceramica pulled out a 77-69 Group A home win over Climamio Bologna on Wednesday in Vitoria, Spain. Tau dominated for most of the game, but needed an 8-0 finishing run to break two late ties and make off with the victory. Luis Scola led the winners with 18 points that included 10 of 10 free throws. Serkan Erdogan added 17 points while Kornel David posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for Tau. Sani Becirovic led the way for Climamio with 14 points and shot his team into the game later. Dalibor Bagaric added 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting, Marco Belinelli 11 and Travis Watson 10. Tau led 61-48 late in the third quarter, but Becirovic had 10 points in an 8-21 run which tied the game at 69-69 with under 3 minutes to go. A mid-range jumper by David and back-to-back triples by Casey Jacobsen and Sergi Vidal sealed the first win for the current Euroleague runner-ups.

After one minute of silence in the memory of legendary coach Aleksander Gomelsky, Bagaric opened fire for Climamio with a layup on his first attempt. Both teams showed up very focused and concentrated in offense, which led to a 7-6 lead for the hosts after only 2 minutes. Bagaric, with 8 early points, kept Climamio in the game and prevented Tau from escaping as the hosts prevailed by a single point, 11-10, midway through the first period. Back-to-back baskets by David and Scola opened a small margin for Tau, but Climamio managed to exploit the hosts' defensive gaps to come within 17-15 after 8 minutes. Tau kept pushing inside, using David as its main weapon, to reach the end of the quarter with a short lead of 22-18.

Climamio ran into its first big problem when Travis Watson committed his third foul just as the second period started, forcing coach Jasmin Repesa to take Bagaric off the bench to replace him. Tiago Splitter's free throws were the only thing that changed the scoreboard, which saw no more action in the first 2 minutes. Although the hosts were not very accurate from the field, their dominion under the boards allowed them to keep Climamio behind by 27-23 after 14 minutes. Climamio increased its intensity on defense and used fullcourt pressure that put Tau in some trouble, but the main problem for the visitors was still there: rebounding, especially on defense. Thanks to second-chance points, Tau held a 36-31 advantage 2 minutes before halftime, as Climamio insisted from the three-point line without success. Even after a flagrant foul called on Vidal, Climamio was unable to reduce the gap and Tau took the first half by 38-32.

Erdogan decided to step forward and lead Tau, scoring all his team's points in first 4 minutes after halftime. All told, Erdogan nailed 11 points in a row, including a three-pointer and 6 of 8 free throws, as Tau's margin reached double digits for the first time, 48-38. Mancinelli reduced that gap almost immediately with a layup as Erazem Lorbek headed to the bench due to his fourth foul midway through the third quarter. Differences remained as Climamio switched its defense to zone, but nothing worked for the visitors, whose shooters kept struggling. Finally, Belinelli nailed Climamio's second three-pointer of the night, after 28 minutes, but Tau didn't need more than feeding Scola and Splitter inside to get a solid 61-50 edge at the end of the third period.

Climamio didn't panic and, using Watson at center and Kommatos playing the power forward, came within 61-57 on a three pointer by Garris and back-to-back baskets by Becirovic and Watson. Tau coach Pedro Martinez tried a timeout, but Becirovic insisted from the three-point line and reduced the gap even more, to 63-60 with 6 minutes to go. After his next free throw, Erdogan and Belinelli exchanged jumpers to put up a 65-63 score after 35 minutes. The fight got even hotter after back-to-back baskets by Becirovic. Belinelli finally tied, 67-67 with 3 minutes remaining, prompting another Tau timeout. Scola drew Lorbek's fifith foul and hit both free throws to break the tie, but Kiwane Garris reestablished it with 2:19 to play on a jumper. David kept Climamio from the lead with a short shot, then the killer came, a corner three-pointer by Casey Jacobsen that made it 74-69 for Tau entering in the last minute. Climamio would not score again, while Vidal banked in a triple, proving it was Tau's night for a 77-69 win.

    Head Coaches

    MARTINEZ, PEDRO
    Tau Ceramica
"We had the game controlled, we were about to break it in the thrid period but we played without rhythm in the last quarter. We didn't play fastbreak, while Climamio scored several quality baskets because they have players able to do that like Belinelli. We lost strength in offense, and as worse we played in offense, the worse we played defense. However, I think we deserved the win so we have to be happy. Climamio is a tough team, they fight every minute of the game as they showed tonight, never giving up. We must play more consistently. We struggled a lot because they stole us several offensive rebounds. It's early in the season and both teams showed that they have to improve a lot yet. I'm sure that Climamio will improve a lot too when we have to visit them at Bologna."
    REPESA, JASMIN
    Climamio Bologna
"Congratulations for Tau Ceramica. They deserved to win this game because they played better. For my team, I can tell only one thing. It's 17% for three-point shooting, 61% for free throws and nine rebounds more for Vitoria, so that's why we didn't deserve to win tonight. I'm only satisfied of the last quarter, we played defense, we reacted. It's difficult to explain how we made only 2 teams fouls in the last three minutes, in a very close game, allowing then to get easy shots and easy baskets. It's only the first game for us and for sure we will improve our game offensively and deffensively. "

    Players

    JACOBSEN, CASEY
    Tau Ceramica
"It was my first game in the Euroleague and as you can imagine it was a bunch of new feelings for me. My teammates already told me about Euroleague games, I knew it were more intense and more physical than any other game we played until now, and they were right."
    BECIROVIC, SANI
    Climamio Bologna
"I don't feel good because we had a chance to win and we didn't make it. We gave them a gift when we let them score easily; Scola sank two free throws and Jacobsen made a three-pointer as we didn't find the right solution in offense. But on the other hand we have to think that we are new, young, not an experienced team and that we have to learn from this to improve. I don't know what happened in rebounding. It was one of the reasons we lost tonight, that's clear, but we have excellent rebounders. Obviously it was not our night. I think that our low percent in three-point shooting was more our fault. Tau is playing really aggressive defense, but tonight I don't know how many open shots we got and we missed all of them."
