THE TAKE

Climamio will look to put its struggles on the road in Group A behind it on Wednesday when it hosts surprising GHP Bamberg in Bologna, Italy. Climamio (1-2), which lost both its games away from Bologna so far, got its only victory when it crushed AEK Athens by 33 points at home in Week 2. Key big man Erazem Lorbek had his best game yet last week, with 19 points, but Climamio still lost, 94-84 at Benetton. Teenage guard Marco Belinelli is Climamio's top scorer with 14 points per game, but he is just one of numerous scoring threats on the team. Coach Jasmin Repesa has 10 players averaging more than 10 minutes per game and seven of them are averaging at least 9 points per game. Thus far, Climamio has taken good care of the ball, committing only 9.3 turnovers per game – second fewest in the league – but is among the worst rebounding teams, with 26.7 boards per outing. After losing on opening night at Benetton, Bamberg (2-1) has reeled off a pair of wins and established itself as a legitimate contender for a spot in the Top 16. A huge reason for the team's success has been the play of power forward Spencer Nelson, who leads his team in scoring with 15.7 ppg. and is second in the league in rebounding with 11.3 per game. Nelson is a threat whenever and wherever he has the ball, as he has proven with his 3.7 assists per game and 5-of-9 three-point shooting. Guard Demond Mallett (13 ppg.) has scored in double figures in every game this season and rookie forward Tim Begley (11 ppg.) provides shooting punch off the bench. Lorbek, last season's Euroleague Rising Star award winner, and Nelson, this year's hottest newcomer, will square off in another match-up of premier power forwards in Group A. But both teams will need more players to step up for a win. Veteran playmaker Derrick Phelps and foul-prone center Chris Ensminger are likely candidates for Bamberg, while Bologna guards Sani Becirovic, Kiwane Garris and Nate Green could put the hosts over the hump. Climamio has the crowd and a little pressure to get its second victory, while Bamberg needs only to play and try to spring another surprise in Group A.

Climamio treated itself to another easy Group A home ride by rolling past visiting GHP Bamberg 94–64 in Bologna, Italy on Wednesday. The victory helped Climaio tie Bamberg, both teams with 2-2 records in Group A. A perfect shooting night from Kiwane Garris paced the hosts, as he used 6-for-6 shooting to score 16 points, the same as Marco Belinelli off the bench. Nate Green added 13 points, Rodolfo Rombaldoni and Dalibor Bagaric 11 each for the winners. Spencer Nelson was again the leading scorer for Bamberg with 18 points, while Tim Begley and Robert Garrett added 12 each. Climamio's offense dominated from the start, running and passing its way to a 10-point gap after just 5 minutes. Nelson couldn't support the entire offensive weight for Bamberg as Climamio kept getting stronger on its way to a high lead of 37 points in the final quarter.

Spencer Nelson found the first point of the game for Bamberg, but the guests proved no further danger. Climamio used layups by Garris and assists from Nate Green, one for an amazing dunk by Mancinelli, to explode in front, 9-1. Nelson responded with 5 points in a row to get the guests within 11-6 after 4 minutes, but Garris immediately answered with a three-pointer, soon copied by Mancinelli, to open up a double-digit lead, 17-7. Bamberg coach Dirk Bauermann called on reserves Chris Ensminger, Tim Begley and Robert Garrett, but Dalibor Bagaric towered inside for 4 points that pushed the lead to 21-9. On the other end, struck from beyond the arc, but that just meant a double response from Climamio, threes from Mancinelli and Lorbek that made it 29-15. Bamberg kept playing until Garrett ended the first quarter from downtown, limiting the difference to 29-20.

The second quarter saw Belinelli enter for the hosts and immediately trade a three-pointer with Begley before Travis Watson took over with blocks, rebounds and assists. His intensity ignited an 11-0 run for the hosts, capped by another three from Belinelli, good for a 20-point lead, 43-23, after 14 minutes. Nelson broke Bamberg's silence with a driving layup while Rodolfo Rombaldoni rewarded Climamio's ball movement with a corner triple. Circulating the ball is how the hosts made Bamberg's defense pay as Belinelli found his third three-pointer without a miss and Lorbek canned an open jumper to make it 52-31. Despite the gap, Bamberg reacted down the stretch when Begley fired from downtown and Ensminger added an easy layup to fix a 53-36 score at halftime.

Just as they had the first half, Garris and Green took over the second right away, combining for 12 early points as Climamio's advantage ballooned to 65-38 after 23 minutes. Demond Mallet made his first shot all night, a symptom of Bamberg's problems. The visitors' defense had it even harder, however, as Garris scored on an easy drive and Bagaric with a baseline move that put 72-45 on the scoreboard. Mallet's jumper and foul shot, followed by Begley's basket, trimmed the difference to 76-52. Climamio just kept feeding Bagaric, who drew fouls and assisted Green for the basked that made it 79-52 after 30 minutes.

Belinelli ran the court to score for Climamio's new maximum lead, 85-52, early in the final quarter. He soon added a hang-in-the-air jump shot before leaving to a standing ovation from the crowd. It was party time at PalaDozza, as the fans welcomed the Euroleague debut of another teenager, Davide Bruttini, with 6 minutes to play. Sani Becirovic scored his first points after 7 assists on a layup and Rombaldoni hit a triple to make it 92-55 with 3 minutes left. This 37-point advantage would remain the maximum of the night as Bamberg scored triples with Begley and Garrett to keep the final difference at 30 points, 94–64, another blowout home victory for Climamio.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Climamio Bologna
"We played well and lived a peaceful night. Approach, concentration and attitude have been right. We did all we needed, we just need time and patience to improve further. However, I noticed improvement in the transition play. We need more intelligence to face tough defense. We know what Becirovic and Garris can give more to the team. They just need continuity."
BAUERMANN, DIRK
GHP Bamberg
"It's been a tough lesson for us, probably we weren’t ready. But probably nobody would have won tonight against a great team like Climamio. They played great, tough, with a great intensity both on offense and defense. They executed well, did an extra pass when requested and acted like a true team, with 11 players who know their role and nobody playing more than 22 minutes. We tried to enlarge the court as much as possible, above all when we saw Bagaric matched with Nelson. But we didn’t score from outside and they ran away. Merely, they’re just too athletic for us, every player with a step faster than mine."

Players

WATSON, TRAVIS
Climamio Bologna
"I try to do my best in the playing time I receive. I’m working hard during practices and coach believes in me. As such I’m trying to widen my offensive options. This is my first year in Euroleague and I discovered a lot of good teams. That’s why it’s so difficult to win on the road."
GARRETT, ROBERT
GHP Bamberg
"We didn’t start ready to play this kind of game. We have to realize the Euroleague is not like the German League, the intensity and the rhythm is a lot higher. If you want to play a balanced game, you have to match the opponent’s intensity and tonight we didn’t. They played an unbelievable first quarter, to which we couldn't respond. Definitely, you can lose but not the way we did tonight."
