THE TAKE

First place in Group C will be on the line Wednesday when Panathinaikos hosts Real Madrid in Athens in agame where both teams will be far from full strength. Former Panathinaikos coach Bozidar Maljkovic, who was on the bench for the first European title ever won by the Greens, will lead the visitors this time. Panathinaikos (5-1) has been hurt by injuries lately and will have to overcome them now against an opponent who likes to play physical basketball. Panathinaikos will be without center Patrick Femerling and forward Fragiskos Alvertis, the latter having undergone an operation this week, while veteran big man Dejan Tomasevic remains highly questionable. Last week the trio's absence had little effect on the Greens, who defeated Pau-Orthez by 15 on the road in France. Michael Batiste scored a season-high 25 points to lead Panathinaikos, Kostas Tsartsaris logged 10 points in 33 minutes and teenager Dusan Sakota added 7 in 15 minutes. Madrid (5-1) will be without its co-leading scorer, guard Igor Rakocevic, and top rebounder, Felipe Reyes (9.5 ppg., 8 rpg.). Rakocevic had a season-best 22 points in last week's victory over Montepaschi Siena, but finished the game with a torn muscle in his leg, while Reyes twisted an ankle in Madrid's weekend Spanish League home loss to Winerthur FC Barcelona. Panathinaikos has won its last 13 Euroleague games at home dating back to last season's opener versus CSKA Moscow. Batiste (13.1 ppg.) and Tsartsaris (7.1 ppg.) have played extended minutes the last few weeks to help the team through its injury woes. This week Panathinaikos coach Zeljko Obradovic will them to step up against Madrid's remaining big men, Axel Herville (11.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg.) and shot-blocking center Venson Hamilton (4.6 rpg 1.5 bpg.). Without Rakocevic (13.8 ppg.), Louis Bullock (13.8 ppg.) will be the boss in the Madrid backcourt against a trio of Panathinaikos aces. Jaka Lakovic (13.2 ppg.) is coming off his worst game of the season, just 3 points against Pau-Orthez, which only means he is likely to explode. Sixth man Vasilis Spanoulis (16.1 ppg, 3.3 apg.) can impact the game the second he enters the court and Dimitrios Diamantidis (11.3 ppg.) is merely considered the best defensive player in the Euroleague. Helping to try to counter those three will be Moustapha Sonko, who should start alongside Bullock and who brings experience, know-how and sure ballhandling. Without Alvertis on the floor, Madrid may also have an advantage at small forward, where Mickael Gelabale (9.8 ppg.) tends to shine in big games and young Marko Tomas has been improving lately. Panathinaikos has the Euroleague's second-best attack, with 83 points per game, while Madrid owns the top defense, giving up only 62.2 points on average. With so many players hurt, those statistics might mislead a bit, but it is safe to say that this game could come down to the home team's guards against the visiting team's big men. Whichever of those two is able to assert its advantage - or whichever or their counterpars limits them best - will likely tilt this superpower battle in on direction or the other.

Despite injury that left its frontcourt nearly empty, Panathinaikos lived up to its billing as a long-term favorite with an 87-71 victory over visiting Real Madrid, its co-leader in Group C until this game. Panathinaikos improved to 6-1 despite missing two injured centers, Dejan Tomsevic and Patrick Femerling, as well as forward and captain Fragiskos Alvertis. Madrid, also weakened by injuries to starters Igor Rakocevic and Felipe Reyes, fell to 5-2 and a second-place tie with CSKA Moscow. The Panathinaikos backcourt ruled as Jaka Lakovic led five scorers in double figures with 18 points. Mike Batiste followed with 17 and 11 rebounds. Nikos Hatzivrettas and Dimitris Diamantidis added 16 each and Vassilis Spanoulis 11. Madrid got 27 points from Louis Bullock and 13 from Marko Tomas. The visitors were in the game for 30 minutes, and actually led near the end of the third quarter, but a 19-6 Panathinaikos run to start the final quarter sealed the outcome and the owner of the top spot in Group C halfway through the regular season.

Former Panathinaikos coach Bozidar Maljkovic was given a warm welcome by the fans. However, on the court both teams got down to battle as defenses took over early. Bullock scored in transition to give Madrid a 4-6 lead after 3 minutes. Panathinaikos answered back with a hook by Batiste and then took the lead behind a long jumper by Chatzivrettas, 8-6. The guests found a go-to guy in Tomas who hit back-to-back jumpers, but the Panathinaikos backcourt was in great shape. Lakovic poured in 5 points and Diamantidis drove to put the hosts up 18-13 after 8 minutes. Bullock flashed his way into the basket with a spectacular crossover, but Diamantidis was unstoppable driving to the hoop for a 20-15 Panathinaikos lead after one quarter.

Diamantidis kept at by converting a three-point play to open the second quarter. What followed was a barrage of triples. Tomas nailed one, but Vassilis Spanoulis teamed with Lakovic for a 9-2 run to push the margin into double digits, 32-22. Moustapha Sonko stepped up to bury consecutive triples that pulled Madrid within 32-28. Then it was time for Diamantidis to return and show who was in charge. He first fed Batiste for a slam dunk on the break and then scored himself to broaden the gap to 36-28. After a timeout, Madrid resumes bombing from the arc. Bullock and Sonko drilled a couple of triples in the final minute and then Mickael Gelabale added free throws to keep the difference down to 37-36 at halftime.

The second half commenced with Madrid charging at full speed. Bullock hit a jumper, igniting a 0-6 run that put the guests in front, 37-42. Diamantidis took over once again, however. He first connected from downtown, then rejected Bullock's shot and finally finished the fastbreak with authority to tie 42-42. Panathinaikos turned it on now, as Konstantinos Tsartsaris and Lakovic scored from the three-point line to retake a 49-47 lead. Chatzivrettas added his own triple shot to boost the margin to 53-49, but a a flagrant foul on Panathinaikos and Gelabale's alley-oop dunk put Madrid in front again, 53-54. Batiste responded with some power moves to take back a 59-57 Panathinaikos edge after three quarters.

Early in the final quarter, the hosts really turned it on, tightening their defense and hitting open shots. A three-pointer by Dimitris Papanikolaou capped a 12-2 burst that pushed the margin to 71-59 and sent the noise level off the meter. Madrid attempted to turn it around, but a Spanoulis triple on the break boosted the lead to 78-63 with less than 4 minutes to go. Behind free throws by Tomas and Bullock, the guests managed to trim the lead to 78-67, but in the next possession, Lakovic put any hopes of a comeback out of reach by connecting from downtown. Nothing changed in the closing seconds and Panathinaikos cruised to a commanding victory, 87-71 that keeps them leaders in Group C.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Panathinaikos
"First of all, I would like to congratulate the fans, as they gave us a lot of energy. Thanks to them we managed to be so effective on the defensive end. Our defense allowed us to score a lot of points on the break, while on the set game we made wise choices and hit the open shots."
MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Real Madrid
"The majority of our players are very young and only Bullock and Sonko are experienced. Hence, the fact that we were forced to play without Rakocevic and Reyes was a major drawback. Moreover, we were tired, as we had little time to rest after Sunday's game against archrivals Barcelona. However, Panathinaikos deserved to win and I believe that if they stay healthy, Panathinaikos can actually win the coveted Euroleague trophy."

Players

LAKOVIC, JAKA
Panathinaikos
"It was a great game because we played in front of thousands of fans. I really enjoyed it. In general, we followed the instructions of our coach and we won. It's as simple as that. Besides, in my opinion we were the better team tonight."
