THE TAKE

The last two Euroleague runners-up will go head-to-head on Thursday in Group A when Climamio hosts visiting Tau Ceramica in Bologna, Italy. Climamio lost to Maccabi in Tel Aviv in the 2004 final, while Tau fell to the same side a year later in the championship game in Moscow. Tau (5-2) hopes to bounce back from last week's road loss against Strasbourg, while Climamio (4-3) is unbeaten at home after three games it has won by an average of 24.7 points. Tau won 77-69 when they last met on opening night, but Climamio will be primed for a chance to match the guests in the standings. Small forward Sergi Vidal (5.5 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) returns to the Tau lineup after missing the last three games. He joins a solid rotation at both wings, while helping Pablo Prigioni (5.8 ppg., 6.5 apg.) with the point guard duties since Roko-Leni Ukic remains sidelined. Prigioni averaged 9 assists in the last three Euroleague games and leads the competition in this category. It certainly helps that he can feed a battery of long-range shooters featuring Casey Jacobsen (6 ppg.), Travis Hansen (9.1 ppg.) and Serkan Erdogan (14.8 ppg.). Climamio has its own star guards in Sani Becirovic (10.1 ppg., 2.6 apg.), Nate Green (7.7 ppg.) and Kiwane Garris (10.4 ppg.), who will try to rev up the temp for Climamio and put pressure on Prigioni. Climamio has its own crew of young yet ready forwards, including Marco Belinelli (14.8 ppg., 58.6% 3FG) and Stefano Mancinelli (5.8 ppg., 46.1% 3FG), who were with the team when Tau knocked Climamio out of last year's Top 16. The key could be to slow Tau superstar Luis Scola (16.7 ppg., 6.8 rpg.), who led all scorers in their previous matchup, with 18 points. Scola can change every game with his short jumpers, intensity and post skills. He has a perfect complement in Kornel David (10 ppg., 94.7% FT), a physical center who can take the mid-range jumper and challenge everyone on defense. Predrag Drobnjak (6 ppg.) and Tiago Splitter (8 ppg., 4.4 rpg.) will also play a big role to round out one of the most talented frontcourts around. Scola will not have it easy against Travis Watson (8 ppg., 5.1 rpg.), a physical power forward ready to take the big challenge. Erazem Lorbek (9.1 ppg., 45.4% 3FG) provides unlimited range, Tomas Ress (2.8 ppg.) can give Climamio a boost off the bench, while center Dalibor Bagaric (8.5 ppg., 60% FG) is a crucial player in this game due to his size and strength, perfect to go against Drobnjak or Splitter. Expect nothing but an intense, outstanding game which could play an important part of the final Group A outcome.

Climamio Bologna ended 2005 by making the Group A race even tighter as it downed one of the co-leaders heading into the week, Tau Ceramica, by a blowout score of 86-66 on Wednesday. Climamio's home victory meant that those two teams are tied with 5-3 records, while Benetton and Zalgiris go for their sixth each on Thursday. Dalibor Bagaric paced the winners with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds as Climamio won the battle on the boards by 39-25. Marco Belinelli led Climamio with 17 points, while Tomas Ress added 11. Tau Ceramica got 17 points from Travis Hansen, 15 from Luis Scola and 10 from Tiago Splitter. Tau led by a point at halftime, but Climamio exploded with a 26-12 third quarter in which Belinelli took a role and never looked back on the way to the victory.

Climamio stepped on court with a lightning start as Stefano Mancinelli scored quickly and Bagaric closed an early 9-0 run for the hosts. Scola couldn’t give a response, missing from the floor and foul line. After not scoring for 3 minutes, Tau coach Velimir Perasovic got a timeout, but Ress came out of it to hit free throws for an 11-0 score. Serkan Erdogan came in and assisted Hansen for Tau's first bucket. On defense, Hansen had a tremendous block on Ress but Tau didn’t gain ground during a three-minute Climamio drought. Bagaric's jumper sent Climamio up by 11 again, 15-4. Hansen managed a triple for Tau, but Sani Becirovic fed Bagaric to make it 18-8. Scola came allive now with back-back-to-back baskets against the Climamio defense to bring Tau within 18-14. Erazem Lorbek's foul shots ended the quarter with Climamio leading 20-14.

Travis Watson and Scola exchanged baskets to open the second quarter, then Hansen landed an open triple that brought Tau closer, 22-19. That gap remained for 3 minutes as Scola replied to Belinelli and Casey Jacobsen to Becirovic. Tau didn’t exploit a flagrant foul and Nate Green drove the lane twice to widen the difference to 30-25 on free throws. Atmosphere got red-hot when Belinelli stole for a fastbreak dunk and a 33-26 score, just before Green got hit with a technical foul. Hansen scored 4 straight free throws and Pablo Prigioni a couple more to bring Tau within a point, 33-32. The Paladozza crowd was now a key element as Garris’s layup put the hosts up 35-32. Tau grabbed consecutive offensive boards, however, and on last play found Hansen for the go-ahead triple to a 35-36 halftime lead.

Climamio took over in the third quarter as it allowed Tau just two baskets in first 6 minutes, 20 seconds. Kiwame Garris and Belinelli sparked a 6-0 run to a 41-36 lead. Tau's Predrag Drobnjak found a bucket but Bagaric reappeared with an assist and a dunk-plus-free throw to fuel another 7-0 run that Belinelli capped with a triple, giving Climamio a double-digit lead, 48-38. After Tau had called timeout, Mancinelli scored from inside. Scola broke Tau's latest scoring silence but Bagaric and Watson found points at the other end, making it 54-40. Tau revived with a 0-6 run to get within 54-46. Watson and Rodolfo Rombaldoni immediately replied, however, with the latter beating the third-quarter buzzer with a triple that left the hosts sitting pretty, ahead 61-48 after 30 minutes.

Ress was Climamio's man in the early fourth period. His back-to-back baskets – a drive and a jumper - shot the hosts ahead by 15 points, 65-50. He then added a dunk-with-free throw. Sergi Vidal found a fastbreak basket to keep Tau breathing but Becirovic nailed his first three-pointer for a new high lead, 70-53. Becirovic was now inspired and his pick-and-roll play with Watson sent the center to dunk and shoot a free throw, too. Down by 20 points, 73-53, Kornel David found his first jumper of the whole night and Prigioni added a triple but when Hansen fouled out, Tau lost all comeback hopes. A Bagaric dunk and Belinelli’s triple cued the closing credits on an impressive 86-66 victory that left these two teams tied heading into 2006.

Head Coaches

REPESA, JASMIN
Climamio Bologna
"We all wanted to give basketball fans a great game. I think it's for that that we were nervous in the second quarter. During the halftime, we found concentration again in order to play our way. We did it and played the best 20 minutes of the season. Getting the concentration back is not easy and is much more difficult for a young team like Fortitudo. We found it and that has big value for us. It doesn't matter about the opponent, the crowd, the refs or whatever – the only goal is to make the result. I think we came out stronger from this win. It could be an important investment for our future."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Tau Ceramica
"The game changed in the third quarter, when we were up by one but didn’t manage to improve. Climamio went out of the lockers with great enthusiasm, the opposite of us. They played good defense and we started to think about our mistakes. That's not the way to play here. We had poor performance from our shooters too, and this has been a key. Erdogan and David? Climamio did a good defensive job on them, even though Erdogan had chances to score. However, he didn't shoot or just missed. As a team, we didn't find any solution for these players."

Players

BAGARIC, DALIBOR
Climamio Bologna
"It hasn't been our best game but a good game for sure. A good game for me, the team and the fans. We managed to play the right way, using entry passes. With then we found important buckets. I'm honored by Larry Bird's compliment and this win makes me happier. We are a true team, but I'm not the leader. I'm just a player who want to play at his best."
SCOLA, LUIS
Tau Ceramica
"The third quarter has been a real disaster in all aspects. They played good defense but we didn't do anything of what we wanted to do. Bagaric played a great game but we don't have excuses for such a poor performance from our team. We wanted to win and stayed in touch just for 20 minutes, not 40. We won by 8 in Vitoria, they rolled us by 20 here: this could be important for the standings. Of course, we hope not."
