THE TAKE

Red-hot DKV Joventut will look to continue its recent stellar form when it hosts Lottomatica Roma on Thursday in a Group B encounter in Badalona, Spain. Rudy Fernandez led a late Joventut charge to overtake Maccabi Tel Aviv last week for the clubs third straight win and fifth in six games. That win saw Joventut (7-4) earn sole possession of second place in the group and more importantly clinch a spot in the Top 16 in the club's Euroleague debut. Roma (4-7) has also been on solid form, winning two in a row for the first time all season before suffering a 10-point loss to undefeated group leader Panathinaikos last week. Lottomatica roared back from a double-digit halftime deficit and hung on for a 71-69 home win when these team faced off in November. Alex Righetti was the big gun for Roma with 16 points, including a three-pointer with 50 seconds left that sealed the outcome. This game features somethng of a passing of the Euroleague torch, with rising star Fernandez (16.8 ppg., 47.5% 3FG) leading Joventut against one of the game's all-time greats, Dejan Bodiroga (13.8 ppg.) of Roma. An interesting matchup also looms in the paint, where the likes of centers Robert Archibald (9.1 ppg., 4.9 rpg.), Andy Betts (8.2 ppg., 1.2 bpg.) and Roberto Dueñas and power forward Charles Gaines (9.1 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) square off with Loukas Mavrokefalides (7.8 ppg.), Ognjen Askrabic (7.8 ppg., 5.1 rpg., 2 spg.), Luca Garri and Alessandeo Tonolli, not to mention Bodiroga. On the perimeter, Joventut is paced by veteran point guard Elmer Bennett (9.7 ppg., 3.4 apg.), Paco Vazquez and Marcelinho Huertas, plus Lubos Barton (10.9 ppg.) at small forward. Teenage sensation Ricky Rubio (3.5 apg.), who leads the league with 4.3 steals per game, is just returning to practice from sickness that forced him miss recent games, so his status is uncertain for Thursday. If he doesn't play, Joventut may also miss Rubio's ball-handling skill against the team with the most steals in the competition – 16.4 per game. Mire Chatman (9.4 ppg., 2.6 apg.) and David Hawkins (13.1 ppg., 2.9 spg.) are the defensive hounds for Lottomatica, while Righetti (8.8 ppg.) brings his fine shooting off the bench. These two confident teams should produce an exciting game, with all eyes on Fernandez and Bodiroga as the Spanish world champion looks to measure his game against the standard of European greats.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"On Thursday we play at home against Lottomatica, and it's always to our advantage to play in Badalona. They have an advantage as compared to our first game with them, when Ilievski played well against us even though they had already decided to change him. What I mean is their team's situation in that game was a little strange, and now it's much more stable. It's clear that you always must go out to win each game, regardless of what it gets you in the standings, because you never know what's going to happen in the Top 16 draw according to your position, so we know we must always go out on the floor to win. Yesterday was the first day that Ricky Rubio came back to practice after being sick with flu and missing the last two games. We hope to have all our players in good shape to play Thursday."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"In order to reach the Top 16, we have to get at least one win away from home. So far we have failed, but we now have two games on the road and we have to try and win both. If we lose our next two games, we really don't deserve to be in the Top 16, as simple as that. Joventut has a very long roster and that is the main worry going into Thursday's game. Of course, there's Rudy Fernandez to keep a close eye on: he is a very good player and could create some problems for us. My players are training well and no-one is injured."

Players

DUEÑAS, ROBERTO
DKV Joventut
"Lottomatica has a roster with very good players. They beat Maccabi and they beat us on their own court, in quite a tight game that we were not able to win. They are coming to Badalona with a lot of ambition and aspirations to qualify for the second round. On our side, we want to win to finish with the best possible position in the standings. Lottomatica is a team with a lot of versatile players, a tough team, but we are playing well at home."
HAWKINS, DAVID
Lottomatica Roma
"In our first game against Joventut, they didn't have their full roster because Lubos Barton was injured and Rudy Fernandez didn't play much as he was also struggling with injury. On Thursday, we face a strong Joventut side and in order to win we will have to be concentrated, especially on the small details in a game, such as free throws and turnovers. Joventut plays very well at home and we must expect an aggressive opponent. We know the importance of this game. One of our goals since we started the
season was to go as far as possible in this competition. We have three games left and we are going to have to win them all in order to be safe. The team pretty much knows that we cannot fail against Joventut."
Mire Chatman - Lottomatica Roma Lottomatica Roma scored a clutch road win to stay in the hunt for a spot in the Top 16, beating DKV Joventut 72-83 in Badalona, Spain. The Roma backcourt of Mire Chatman and David Hawkins were too much for the hosts to stop. Roma dominated practically throughout the 40 minutes, as Joventut only managed to jump ahead by one minute at the start of the third quarter with a 43-42. After that, Hawkins and Chatman fired in points to restore the Lottomatica cushion for good. The win lifts Roma to a 5-7 record, tied for fourth place with Unicaja, Cibona and Partizan in Group B. Joventut drops to 7-5 and is tied for second place with Maccabi Elite. Hawkins led the way for Lottomatica with 25 points, Chatman added 18 and Dejan Bodiroga 13 – 5 of them in the two final plays. For Joventut, Charles Gaines had 19 points and Lubos Barton had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Loukas Mavrokefalidis hit a turnaround jumper and Alessandro Tonolli soon fed Bodiroga for a 0-4 Lottomatica start. Bodiroga found another quick basket and Rudy Fernandez could only score for Joventut from the free throw line, 1-6. Barton blasted a three from the corner to make it 6-8, but Hawkins replied with a three-point play to maintain a 6-11 Roma edge. Robert Archibald and Charles Gaines added three fast points for the hosts, but Bodiroga was stellar on offense. Two more free throws by Hawkins made it 9-17 but Dmitry Flis did the same. Lottomatica grew the lead to 11-20. Chatman put the first double-digit lead of the night for the guests  with a free throw for 11-21, but Marcelinho Huertas had an easy layup for the hosts after a fastbreak to make it 16-23. There was only time for a Luca Garri  layup that closed the first period with a 16-25 Roma lead.

Ognjen Askrabic with a three and Garri with a dunk helped the guests start the second quarter with a 0-5 run, but Barton again broke the spell for Joventut with  his own three, 19-30. However, Chatman replied with a three-point play to maintain Roma at a healthy 19-33 as defenses ruled and baskets were scarce.  Rudy awakened the stands with his triple, and when the Joventut press defense started working, Barton and Ferran Laviña made two consecutive baskets as  the hosts trimmed the deficit down to 27-33. Roma reacted thanks to Chatman and Hawkins, and then Alex Righetti had a three-point play to keep the guests  comfortably ahead, 33-40. In the last play of the first half, a Huertas turnover allowed Askrabic to score for a 36-42 Lottomatica edge at the break.

Rudy Fernandez - DKV JoventutElmer Bennett opened the third quarter with a triple to Joventut fans' delight, and Archibald added a free throw for 40-42. The run escalated to a 7-0 as  Barton allowed Joventut to jump ahead for the first time, 43-42. Hawkins broke the drought for Roma with a three and Chatman had 5 straight points of his own to make it 46-53. Barton tipped in his sixth offensive rebound, maintaining Joventut at a safe distance, but Chatman was on fire and  always found the right space to drill baskets. Gaines moved inside for his bucket but Roma played with patience in offense and Garri was left open for a  triple that made it 50-58 in minute 28. Joventut was confused in defense and that was used by Hawkins to continue Roma's momentum and forcing a new timeout  for the hosts. In the last play of the quarter, Barton found another offensive rebound to make it 52-61 after 30 minutes.

Hawkins continued with his offensive festival to open the last quarter, but Gaines slammed on the other side to re-vindicate Joventut's options. Both teams  were nervous now and missed baskets. Hawkins nailed a free throw for the guests and Rudy replied with a long jumper for a 56-64 score. But Lottomatica  resisted each strike of the hosts with a Bodiroga that showed his classy experience with an inmense jumper from the side to maintain the lead of the guests  over the 10 points, 57-68 in minute 36. Joventut had several chances to turn the game to its favor but 18 turnovers up to that point didn't help. It was  Gaines who had 4 straight points including a three-point play to make it 62-68. However Bodiroga stepped up again with a triple to put things back in  place and Chatman blasted another for 64-74, smashing all the hopes of the fans in Badalona. Gaines was the only solid option in offense for Joventut as he  slammed again, but Righetti went to the corner for a triple that made it 69-81 to break the game open.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"We weren't aggressive at the beginning and we were too slow. They imposed their rhythm and set the pace of the game against us. They played a good game, they won and we have to accept that. We missed too many free throws and they had some openshots. Hawkins really hurt us tonight, he is a player who is very tough to guard."
REPESA, JASMIN
Lottomatica Roma
"Congratulations to my team. We rebounded well against a team with solid centers and we controlled the game from the beginning. We still have two tough games ahead of us against Unicaja and Cibona. We want to make the top 16. We were better tonight against a team which plays one of the fanciest games in Europe."

Players

FERNANDEZ, RUDY
DKV Joventut
"We wanted to secure the second place of our group tonight but it was not possible. This makes the situation a bit more complicated. We have to play like we did before this game and try to forget this loss. Every game is a different story."
