Red-hot DKV Joventut will look to continue its recent stellar form when it hosts Lottomatica Roma on Thursday in a Group B encounter in Badalona, Spain. Rudy Fernandez led a late Joventut charge to overtake Maccabi Tel Aviv last week for the clubs third straight win and fifth in six games. That win saw Joventut (7-4) earn sole possession of second place in the group and more importantly clinch a spot in the Top 16 in the club's Euroleague debut. Roma (4-7) has also been on solid form, winning two in a row for the first time all season before suffering a 10-point loss to undefeated group leader Panathinaikos last week. Lottomatica roared back from a double-digit halftime deficit and hung on for a 71-69 home win when these team faced off in November. Alex Righetti was the big gun for Roma with 16 points, including a three-pointer with 50 seconds left that sealed the outcome. This game features somethng of a passing of the Euroleague torch, with rising star Fernandez (16.8 ppg., 47.5% 3FG) leading Joventut against one of the game's all-time greats, Dejan Bodiroga (13.8 ppg.) of Roma. An interesting matchup also looms in the paint, where the likes of centers Robert Archibald (9.1 ppg., 4.9 rpg.), Andy Betts (8.2 ppg., 1.2 bpg.) and Roberto Dueñas and power forward Charles Gaines (9.1 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) square off with Loukas Mavrokefalides (7.8 ppg.), Ognjen Askrabic (7.8 ppg., 5.1 rpg., 2 spg.), Luca Garri and Alessandeo Tonolli, not to mention Bodiroga. On the perimeter, Joventut is paced by veteran point guard Elmer Bennett (9.7 ppg., 3.4 apg.), Paco Vazquez and Marcelinho Huertas, plus Lubos Barton (10.9 ppg.) at small forward. Teenage sensation Ricky Rubio (3.5 apg.), who leads the league with 4.3 steals per game, is just returning to practice from sickness that forced him miss recent games, so his status is uncertain for Thursday. If he doesn't play, Joventut may also miss Rubio's ball-handling skill against the team with the most steals in the competition – 16.4 per game. Mire Chatman (9.4 ppg., 2.6 apg.) and David Hawkins (13.1 ppg., 2.9 spg.) are the defensive hounds for Lottomatica, while Righetti (8.8 ppg.) brings his fine shooting off the bench. These two confident teams should produce an exciting game, with all eyes on Fernandez and Bodiroga as the Spanish world champion looks to measure his game against the standard of European greats.
