THE TAKE

With the chance to keep its Final Four dream alive, Olympiacos hosts DKV Joventut on Thursday night at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus, Greece with either team capable of finishing second in Group E and walking off with a spot in the Quarterfinal Playoffs. Only Olympicos (2-3) is in control of its own destiny, however. By winning on Thursday, the Reds will clinch second place and advance to the best-of-three quarterfinals with Tau Ceramica. Joventut (1-4) has it a lot more difficult: to advance, the Spanish team must whip Olympiacos by at least 35 points and hope CSKA defeates Partizan in Belgrade. In that case, Olympiacos, Joventut and Partizan would all finished tied 2-4 records, but Joventut would advance on the tiebreaker. If Joventut beats Olympiacos by 34 points or fewer, Partizan will advance, win or lose against CSKA. In their first Top 16 meeting, Joventut edged Olympiacos 58-56 last month in Spain as Rudy Fernandez scored 15 points. Teen sensation Ricky Rubio led the defensive charge that night with 7 steals that contributed to 27 Olympiacos turnovers, but he won't make the trip this week. Instead, Joventut welcomes back Lubos Barton, a key performer who was missing several games due to injury. This time, point guard Scoonie Penn (12.8 ppg., 3.2 apg.) and Olympiacos will look to protect the ball while picking up their scoring pace at home. Penn will go head-to-head with Elmer Bennett (8.2 ppg., 2.8 apg.) and Marcelinho Huertas in the game's key matchup as both teams will look to control the tempo. Joventut's depth will also be key, as the visitors need to storm Olympiacos from the opening tip to have any shot at the needed point-difference. On the offensive end, Fernandez (16.2 ppg.) will need to be at his best, but will get plenty help now from Barton, while Charles Gaines (10.1 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) and Joventut centers Robert Archibald (9.3 ppg.) and Andy Betts must handle the Olympiacos frontcourt corps of Andrija Zizic (12.4 ppg., 5.1 rpg.), Ioannis Burousis (8.8 ppg., 5.3 rpg.), Sofoklis Schortsianitis (7.5 ppg.) and Sam Hoskin. Forward Alex Acker (14.6 ppg., 5.8 rpg.) and swingman Panagiotis Vasilopoulos round out the Olypiacos starting five, and their ability to make things happen on the perimeter will also be key. Acker's rebounding from the wing will be key again for his team's hopes of success, as will the effectiveness of Schortsianitis inside. The fact that Joventut must win bu so many points could work in the Reds' favor, since anything short of a massive lead by halftime could demoralize the visitors and allow Olympiacos to control the second half. But the pressure will still be on Olympiacos to the end, because anything short of victory and passage to the playoffs will be deemed a massive failure in Piraeus.

Quotes Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"For the team of DKV Joventut, tomorrow's game is quite an easy game as they have nothing to lose. On the other hand, for us it is a very difficult and dangerous game. They are going to press and steal and run. We are better team than Badalona, but we have to show it. The advantage for DKV Joventut is that they don't have any kind of stress and at any time they can change the game. If we manage to play cleverly, without so many mistakes, we are going to take the thing that we want. The key of the game will be the mistakes."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"It's clear that we always have to come on court strong, but since that is not always a given, our intention is to go to Athens and play the best way possible. That is what we have to do first, regardless of whether the game has impact on the qualification or not."

Players

VASILOPOULOS, PANAGIOTIS
Olympiacos
"The game against DKV Joventut is like a final game to us. The team of DKV Joventut has young players, they run quickly and the most important thing is that they don't have anything to lose. They don't have any kind of stress. Stress for us is our biggest difficulty, but this is not going to be an alibi or an excuse. We are going to do our best. In my opinion, I believe that the fans of our team are going to help us, as they did in the same way for the game against Partizan. They know the way to make us better."
FERNANDEZ, RUDY
DKV Joventut
"We are facing a game on Thursday in which we'll try to capture again the good mental attitude that we had in recent games. We have to go try to win the game, and if we can play and incredible game and win it by 35 points, better."
Henry Domercant - Olympiacos The last Quarterfinal Playoffs spot in the Euroleague was colored red as Olympiacos stormed into the next round with a 81-65 victory over visiting DKV Joventut in Piraeus, Greece on Thursday. Olympiacos finished second in Group E with a 3-3 record and didn't need its tie-break advantage against Partizan, which lost at home to CSKA Moscow. The Reds now turn to face Tau Ceramica, which went undefeated in the Top 16, in a best-of-three playoff series that starts on April 3 in Vitoria, Spain. Game 2 will be in Piraeus two nights later, April 5, and the third game, if necessary, back in Vitoria on April 12. The winner of that quarterfinal playoff series will reach the Final Four in Athens from May 4 to 6. Wanting to make the Final Four in its own back yard has been a theme for Olympiacos all season. With victory required on Wednesday, the Reds shook off early challenges by Joventut to take double-digit leads for good with a 13-1 run on either side of halftime. Henry Domercant had 7 of those points and finished with a team-high 17 for the Reds. Andrija Zizic added 14, Alex Acker and Ioannis Bouroussis 12 each and Sam Hoskin 10 for the winners. For Joventut, Charles Gaines had 15 points and Marcelinho Huertas 12. Joventut played without season-long steals leader Ricky Rubio, who stayed home in Spain, while the team's top scorer, Rudy Fernandez, was injured in the second quarter but returned to action late in the game.

Ioannis Bouroussis grabbed a rebound on defense, went the other way and dropped a three-pointer to get Olympiacos started at 3-0. Andy Betts and Gaines soon found esay basket to put Joventut ahead, but soon Alex Acker nailed a jumper that put the Reds back in front, 5-4. Bouroussis remained a catalyst by dishing a couple of assists to Zizic, but Fernandez from the arc and Betts from inside tied the score again before Zizic broke it with a put-back at 11-9. The Reds stepped on pull the gas as Panagiotis Vassilopoulos dunked a fastbreak alley-oop pass from Scoonie Penn, who then drove for a basket at 15-9. Joventut was unbowed, quickly tying again on a free throw by Betts, a put-back by Gaines and a triple by Marcelinho Huertas. Acker and Sam Hoskin revived Olympiacos with shots inside, but Huertas proved he was hot by popping in consecutive jumpers at 21-19. Vassilopoulos took the last word of the quarter, inbounding on the side and taking the pass back to beat the buzzer with a dunkto leave the Reds up 26-21 after 10 minutes.

Charles Gaines - DKV JoventutRudy and Domercant exchanged triples to open the second quarter, but Olympiacos kept the momentum going. Vassilopoulos added his own shot from downtown to make it 32-14 and when Acker finished off an open-court layup, the Reds had an 8-0 run and their first double-digit lead. Joventut took a timeout and used a basket-plus-free throw by Gaines to climb back in the game, but at the same time lost Fernandez to an injury when Domercant bumped him in the jaw while going up for a jump shot. Nonenetheless, Lubos Barton, Gaines and Ferran Laviña strung together the next 6 points for Joventut, and the score was suddenly 35-33. Olympiacos needed the timeout, now. Zizic put an end to his team's scoring silence with a layup after an offensive rebound, but Laviña answered back at 37-35. The Reds kept seeking solutions and found one in Domercant, who buried a three-pointer and returned to hit from just inside the arc to beat the halftime buzzer as Olympiacos held the upper hand by 44-36 heading to the lockers.

Bouroussis hit a free throw and Domercant dunked to lift the Olympiacos lead into double digits again, 47-36, after the break. By the time Penn connected from behind the arc, Olympiacos had a 6-0 run and 50-36 lead, while Joventut had gone 4 minutes without scoring. Paco Vazquez finally broke through with a triple for the guests, but Christos Charissis and Domercant upped the difference to 54-39 with free throws. Olympiacos was content to exchange points for awhile, but when Laviña hit a triple to make it 56-46, the Reds took no chances. Hoskin and Acker combined on 6 points in less than a minute to ensure Olympiacos a 64-48 advantage after 30 minutes.

Ioannis Bourousis - OlympiacosBetts opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a hook shot that Bouroussis matched by beating the shot-clock-buzzer at 66-50. Vazquez gave the guests a quick lift with a rare four-point play as he made the free throw awarded as he also nailed a triple to make it 66-54. However, Acker and Hoskin nailed a basket each to make clear that Olympiacos remained the boss on the scoreboard at 70-54. The Olympiacos fans felt comfortable enough to start dancing in the aisles now, while Gaines found and Bouroussis traded points that made for a 74-56 score with 3 minutes left. The fact that it was 18 behind on the scoreboard and would have needed 35 more - a total difference of 53 - to qualify for the playoffs left Joventut with little inspiration. So the crowd enjoyed some fine dunks from Bouroussis and Gaines as their team eased into the quarterfinals and they sang about their dreams of making it all the way to the Final Four.

Head Coaches

GERSHON, PINI
Olympiacos
"It was a hard game. We played according our strategy; tried to avoid turnovers and force Badalona into poor percentage. I think that we did a good job as Badalona shot 37% from the field. We grabbed the rebounds and ran the court to find fastbreaks. We can play better, but I am satisfied with my players' will to reach the Final Four. It won't be easy. Tau is a great team, with much talent and experience. It might be good for us that in this series we will be the outsider and pressure will be on the other side."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
DKV Joventut
"It was a tough game. We knew that it was impossible for us to win it by 35 in order to qualify. Tonight, our class players didn't play well. Barton came back from his injury having been with us only for two practices. Rubio had to stay in Spain to take some exams at his school."

Players

DOMERCANT, HENRY
Olympiacos
"This is a great win, as we've now reached the quarterfinals. The good thing is that tonight, not only one or two, but many players played well. We will focus on the next games against Tau, because we must prove that we can knock them out. I believe that if we play the way we can, we could beat every team."
HUERTAS, MARCELINHO
DKV Joventut
"This was not the important game. The important game was the one we lost at home to Partizan. However, we had to play our best, not considering the fact that we did not have hopes to qualify. We played too bad in the Top 16. I wish we played as well as we did in the first round, but in the end we didn't. We now have to concentrate on the Spanish League in order to get the right to come back to the Euroleague next year."
