THE TAKE

Tau Ceramica will look to extend its Euroleague record 28-game home-court winning streak when it hosts Virtus VidiVicic Bologna on Thursday in Group A. Tau, which last lost a Euroleague game at Fernando Buesa Arena in January 2005, will try to bounce back after dropping its opener last week at Olympiacos Piraeus 95-90. Despite the loss, head coach Neven Spahija can take a number of positives from the loss. Not only did his team storm back from an 18-point halftime deficit to challenge for the win, but the passing game worked as five players dished at least 3 assists and Mirza Teletovic had his best Euroleague game to date, with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Meanwhile Virtus marked its return to the Euroleague with an 81-75 home win over Zalgiris Kaunas. Alan Anderson was the catalyst with 28 points off the bench. Anderson since traveled to America for the birth of his first son, but is expected in Spain for the game against Tau. On the other hand, Delonte Holland is back for head coach Stefano Pillastrini, who will need all the firepower he can muster against Tau's deep lineup. Rookie point guard Will Conroy and backup Fabio Di Bella will have their hands full with Tau's Pablo Prigioni, an All-Euroleague second teamer in each of the past two seasons. On the wings, Holland, Anderson, Dewarick Spencer and Federico Listini will battle Tau's Igor Rakocevic, Zoran Planinic and forward Pete Mickael. Teletovic, Tiago Splitter and Will McDonald make up the Tau frontline, which will be challenged by Roberto Chiacig, Guilherme Giovannoni, Andrea Crosariol and Luca Garri. Tau, which has now been to three consecutive Final Fours, has experience on its side, especially with the Bologna players stepping into the electric atmosphere in Vitoria. The teams have similar strengths and players that match up well on paper, which could make this game as much – if not more – about effort than it is about tactics. Some of the more promising individual battles pit Teletovic against Giovannoni, Splitter versus Chiacig, and Rakocevic with Spencer. Tau remains the favorite as always at home, especially since Spahija and his players know that an 0-2 start for a team that went 12-2 last season is unacceptable. But the Virtus guys know what a 2-0 start could do to their season too. It will be fun to watch and see who wants it more as the two talented teams give it their all on Thursday.

Quotes Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"After terrible first half in Athens, we worked better in the second but we know we still have to improve on defense, and that's what we tried to do in our last domestic game against Menorca. Now, we play our first game at home and we want to show that we are a much better team than we showed in the opener. Virtus is a very good team, with a lof of quality players. Although they went through some problems, they are really dangerous and we prepared all details about this game. They have unbelievable talent in the perimeter with players like Delonte Holland or Alan Anderson, but they also have a lot of experienced players in the paint, so I wouldn't say that there's a worse part or a weaker are of their roster. They are good enough to play this competition. We don't want to repeat the same mistakes we made in Athens. We will try to play much better defense and prevent Virtus from doing good on offense, so I don't expect a game with a lot of points."
PILLASTRINI, STEFANO
Virtus VidiVici
"As I said one week ago, we will try to enjoy this Euroleague experience as a big party. Now, against Tau Ceramica, we will have another chance to play with an open mind but without losing ambition, even though our group is probably the strongest. I don't know what to expect from the game, but I am serene and determined. We don't want to play a bad game. We will try to play like we did against Zalgiris at home but I hope my team will start in a better way than in recent games. We usually struggle at the beginning of games, something we cannot do in the home of Tau Ceramica. I am very curious about my team's competitiveness in this game."

Players

SPLITTER, TIAGO
Tau Ceramica
"They are a quality team, very talented, so I think they will put us in trouble for sure. We play this game after losing the opener in Athens, so we must improve and play much better basketball in our first game at home. They count on very dangerous players in the backcourt, but they also have inside players that can step back and hit from outside like Luca Garri or Giovanonni. We must be prepared and focused on all the players, not only on a couple of them. We didn't play a good defense in the first game against Olympiacos and that's something we must improve, as our coach has emphasized."
GIOVANNONI, GUILHERME
Virtus VidiVici
"We are ready to face Tau Vitoria in our first road game in Euroleague. We know they are a very strong team, with a lot of experienced players like Rakocevic and Prigioni. It is difficult to indicate the best player in the team, but for sure we will have to focus on my friend Tiago Splitter, in order to limit his play in the low-post and his agility for offensive rebounds. It's going to be a tough night. Tau usually play sat the highest level even though in this period they haven't looked yet to be in their best shape. We will have to concentrate as much as we can if we want to play a balanced game in their arena."
Tiago Splitter - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica demolished Virtus VidiVicic Bologna 98-71 in a lopsided encounter on Thursday night, extend its Euroleague record home-court winning streak to 29 at Fernando Buesa Arena. Igor Rakocevic led Tau with 23 points as the team raced out to an early lead and never looked back. Tau led 49-34 at halftime and continued to pour it on in the second half. The lead grew throughout the third quarter and peaked at 98-60 late in the game before Virtus made a late run to save face. Tau improved to 1-1 in Group A, trailing only CSKA Moscow in the standings. It travels to Poland next week to challenge Prokom Trefl Sopot. VidiVici fell to 1-1 and next heads to Greece to meet Olympiacos. Mirza Teletovic added 18 points and 9 rebounds, Tiago Splitter scored 14, Pablo Prigioni 13 and Will McDonald 10. Delonte Holland posted 27 points and 11 rebounds and Guilherme Giovanonni scored 13 for Virtus.

Despite an uptempo style of basketball, both teams remained scoreless for the first minute of the game until Roberto Chiacig hit a free throw, which was followed by a Giovanonni layup for a 0-3 Virtus lead. VidiVici head coach Stefano Pillastrini decided to use Federico Lestini as starter to guard Zoran Planinic, but had to change his mind after the Italian committed his second foul, which forced him to be replaced by Fabio Di Bella. A three-pointer by Teletovic gave Tau its first lead at 7-5 and the visitors switched to zone defense on the next play. Although Teletovic hit again in the paint, the hosts struggled to find the way to the basket against the zone. Teletovic hit again from downtown for a 12-7 edge midway though the first period, as VidiVici survived thanks to offensive rebounding and individual performances from players like Chiacig and Holland. A bomb from Sergi Vidal and a fastbreak layup by Rakocevic forced Pilastrini to call for his first timeout with VidiVici trailing 17-9 after six minutes, but nothing changed as Tau reached its first double-digit advantage after Splitter hit twice from the free throw line for a 22-12 edge. The visitors were unable to find their momentum, as only Chiacig threatened the Tau defense. Alan Anderson, who joined the team in Vitoria after going to the United States for his first son’s birth, added a free throw and Will Conroy hit a layup to get Vidivici closer, 26-19 at the end of the first period.

Delonte Holland - Virtus Vidivici BolognaRakocevic added a triple and Pete Mickeal scored inside as Tau started to pull away early in the second period, as the visitors found a single point from Anderson in the first three minutes of the second quarter. McDonald and Planinic extended the lead to 38-20 as the hosts used a full-court pressure that made Virtus go crazy for a while. Pillastrini stopped the game with a timeout, which calmed down his team for a while. Conroy scored a fastbreak layup after stealing the ball at midcourt, but he was quickly answered by a turnaround bank shot from Teletovic. Pablo Prigioni was the next to hit a triple, breaking the soft defense of VidiVici and raising the difference to 43-24 after 15 minutes. Andrea Crosariol scored 4 points in a row, including a one-handed dunk, to prevent the hosts from reaching the 20-point margin, but he found no help from his teammates until Giovanonni nailed a pair of triples to reduce deficit to 46-34 after 19 minutes. Tau head coach Neven Spahija called for a timeout to try to cut the comeback and Prigioni hit a buzzer-beating triple to allow Tau reach halftime with a comfortable margin at 49-34.

Tau needed only three minutes to reach the 20-point margin after intermission as Splitter and Teletovic combined for a 7-2 run. Pillastrini had to face an additional problem with the third foul of Crosariol, as the 22-year old center had to be replaced by Chiacig. Five points in a row by Rakocevic and a fastbreak layup by Planinic increased the lead to 65-40 midway through the third period, as VidiVici faded away step by step. Pillastrini’s timeout proved useless, as the hosts kept rocking and adding points with little effort. The visitors struggled on every attack, averaging a single point per minute in the quarter so far. Things got even worse for the visitors after Alan Anderson fouled out with three minutes remaining in the quarter and Tau leading by 25. The hosts didn’t relax though, as a three-point play by Splitter was followed by a corner triple by Rakocevic and a layup by Mickeal for a 33-point lead. A three-pointer by Holland and a fastbreak basket by Di Bella served as a make up for Virtus, but it was just an illusion as Rakocevic and McDonald responded in the last minute for a 78-47 lead after 30 minutes.

Sergi Vidal - Tau CeramicaSeeing that the outcome was in no-doubt, Spahija decided to give some minutes to Lucho Fernandez, who made his Euroleague debut at 32 after a long career in the Spanish lower divisions. It was time too for the comeback of Simas Jasaitis after missing the Euroleague opener in Athens due to an infection. Meanwhile, the game continued with one only issue to solve – the point difference. Both defenses relaxed a bit, especially on the visitors’ side, which allowed Tau to add easy points and boost the lead up to 37. Jasaitis hit a three pointer for a game-high 38 point-lead at 98-60 with two minutes remaining, as Spahija decided to put also youngster Ander Garcia on court for another Euroleague debut. Virtus took advantage of it to reduce the difference and an alley-oop by Crosariol and a triple by Holland reduced the gap to 98-65 entering in the last minute. A free throw by Luca Garri, followed by a triple by Lestini and a buzzer-beating layup by Conroy capped a 0-11 run to finish the game.

Head Coaches

SPAHIJA, NEVEN
Tau Ceramica
"First of all I would like to congratulate my team for the win, and at the same time I want to apologize to our fans for how we played the last quarter. This is not the way I want to play the game, but I was forced to make many changes because we have a short roster and we face Estudiantes on Saturday and we didn't want to take risks and prevent players from getting injured. I think we showed what we can do in the third quarter, we can run, we can play defense, but I think that we can play even better. It was a kind of practice for Jasaitis, I put him on court to allow him to have some minutes and recover the feelings."

Players

MICKEAL, PETE
Tau Ceramica
"I expected that they would play better tonight. We didn't play as good as we could in the first half, but we came out strong in the second. We wanted to make a good game, especially for our home fans. We tried hard to play a good game and I think we did a good job tonight."
GIOVANNONI, GUILHERME
Virtus VidiVici
"We didn't expect such a large defeat tonight. We already knew that Tau is a high-quality team, they are able to play really hard and make very good basketball, but we couldn't stop them. We entered in foul trouble very soon and we also missed Dewarick Spencer, who is a very important player for us, but all of this cannot be used as an excuse. We must look at the mistakes we committed and try to improve by learning from those mistakes."
