THE TAKE

Le Mans Sarthe Basket hosts Efes Pilsen on Thursday in a crucial Group A encounter. Le Mans has lost three in a row and five of its last six. The French champion now needs every win it can get to build on its 3-6 record and mount a run at a spot in the Top 16. Efes Pilsen power forward Marcus Haislip threw down an array of alley-oops and slams on his way to a career-high 33 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to win the Week 9 MVP award as Efes defeated RheinEnergie 91-76 in the last game before the winter break. That was the teams second win in a row as it improved to 5-4. Now coach Oktay Mahmuti will hope that the winter break has not affected his club's momentum. When these teams met in November, Kenny Gregory had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Le Mans to a big 53-64 win in Istanbul in the first-ever meeting between the sides. This game features an interesting big man reunion in the paint between Efes's Nikola Prkacin and Le Mans's Sandro Nicevic, teammates at Cibona Zagreb in the Euroleague's inaugural season back in 2000-01. Le Mans plays a fast game with a lot of ball movement, which is why it is second in the league in assists (16 apg.), but also commits 15.2 turnovers per game. Efes on the other hand, commits the fewest turnovers in the league, 11.2 per game. The Le Mans backcourt of Tyson Wheeler (3.6 apg.), Yannick Bokolo (3.2 apg.) and Pape-Philippe Amagou will look to apply added pressure on Efes guards Drew Nicholas (14.2 ppg., 3.3 apg.), Horace Jenkins (11.9 ppg.), and Cuneyt Erden to take the visitors out of their offensive rhythm. Small forwards Cenk Akyol (8 ppg.) and Mustafa Abi and big men Haislip (14.9 ppg., 6.9 rpg., 2.1 bpg.), Ermal Kuqo (9.7 ppg.), Kerem Gonlum and Prkacin make up a crowded, versatile frontcourt. Le Mans counters has a pair of explosive athletes at forward in Eric Campbell (13.6 ppg., 8 rpg.) and Gregory (16.2 ppg., 6 rpg.), while Nebojsa Bogavac (9.5 ppg.) is more of a factor on the offensive end. Nicevic (13.1 ppg., 5.9 rpg., 1.1 bpg.) is a major cog in the Le Mans attack from the high post. Le Mans dominated the glass (26-38) when it best Efes last time and it it likely that the play of the big men will determine the outcome once more. Look to the matchup of Haislip on Campbell to see if Le Mans's speed can win out over Efes's power.

Quotes Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"This match makes us bear in mind the hope for a qualification to the Top 16. After our two last defeats, against Bologna and Sopot, we must win against Efes Pilsen. We know that Efes is playing better and better in this competition, and that they'll come to take their revenge. This team is well balanced, with very good inside players, such as their post-up players Prkacin and Kuqo (not to forget Haislip and Gonlum), together with their excellent outside scorers -Akyol, Nikolas and Jenkins - thanks to whom they have the best three-point percentage in the Euroleague."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"Of course, it's a very important game for both sides. We are going to play for revenge against an opponent to whom we lost on our home court. We don't want to repeat the same mistakes that we made in Istanbul. We are aiming to win this very difficult game against Le Mans with a good performance. The most important thing is to win the game and that's what we are focused on."

ADJIWANOU, FREDERIC
Le Mans
"It is our first match in this 'ew year, 2007. We haven’t finished well in 2006, so now we’ve got to re-start on a good basis. We must prepare this match seriously, because we know that they will try to take their revenge. All we've got to do is play aggressively and be respectful of our coach's instructions."
ERDEN, CUNEYT
Efes Pilsen
"Le Mans won the first game we played in Abdi Ipekci with an outstanding performance. It was a surprising win, but I have to say honestly that they really deserved it. To characterize this loss as an accident, we must win the second leg on the road. It's going to be a very tough game for both sides. If we look at the game from our side, we will make another step toward the top three in our group if we win. From the other side, Le Mans has to win to keep alive its chances for the Top 16. I think they will be under pressure rather than us. We will try to be patient for the whole 40 minutes and try to play much better than we did in the first game."
Andrew Nicholas - Efes Pilsen A battle at the heart of the Group A race for survival went down to the last quarter on Thursday before visiting Efes Pilsen outlasted host Le Mans by 67-71. Efes lifted its record to 6-4 and retained its share of third place in Group A, while Le Mans dropped to 3-7 and sixth place. Horace Jenkins led the winners with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Drew Nicholas added 14 points by making 4 of 7 triples, while Ermal Kuqo also had 14 and Kerem Gonlum added 10. For the hosts, Kenny Gregory had 20 points, Eric Campbell added 14 and Nebojsa Bogavac had 11. The hosts resisted thanks to outstanding three-point shooting, but when the shots started to miss, Efes found enough of a solid lead to survive until the final buzzer.

After a slow start, Nicholas opened the scoring for Efes while Gregory replied with 4 straight points of his own for Le Mans. Jenkins and Campbell traded triples before Nicholas and Bogavac did the same as the score escalated to 10-10 on a layup by Kuqo. The shooting accuracy was off the charts now as Gregory climbed to 8 points himself and Le Mans was hitting 83% of its two-pointers. Efes was nearly as efficient, however, as Kuqo, Nicholas and Jenkins shared all their team's points as the visitors went ahead 14-16. Le Mans answered with a 6-0 run capped by Sandro Nicevic's bucket to take a 20-18 edge after 10 minutes.

Efes hit back with 4 unanswered points to start the second quarter by taking back the lead. Nicolas Batum dunked to revive Le Mans and soon Campbell was able to score to tie the score again at 24-24 after 15 minutes. Nicholas picked up the scoring pace with back-to-back triples for the visitors, although Campbell managed to squeeze his own shot from dowtown in between. Nicevic finished a frantic minute with a fast layup and Gregory added a new three-pointer to tie the score once more, 32-32. The hosts dominated the rebounds battle and excelled from the arc with only a miss in their 5 attempts until then, but Nicholas kep Efes right there. After an Efes timeout, Gonlum made it 34-34, taking the teams into the halftime break as close as when they started the game.

Nebojsa Bogavac - Le MansKuqo opened the second half for Efes with 4 consecutive points before Bogavac resumed Le Mans' three-point assault. Gregory lifted a layup to keep the hosts ahead at 39-38, but Jenkins soon fixed that situation with a triple. Gregory and Nicholas traded new triples after a Campbell dunk as Le Mans stayed in the driver's seat. Le Mans was still shooting great from the arc, as was Nicholas, hitting 4 of 5 triples to that point. Jenkins and Marcus Haislip boosted Efes with straight baskets, but the lead never was solid as Campbell soon made it a one-point game again. However, free throws from Gonlum and Jenkins earned Efes its biggest lead yet, 51-55 after 30 minutes.

The Efes run continued up into the final quarter as Profit blasted a three-pointer to make it 55-62. Alain Koffi looked for an inside basket as the hosts chose the worst moment to start missing from the arc. Koffi was the only scring resource for Le Mans now, and Efes looked inside for Kuqo to maintain a five-point cushion as the game hit minute 35. When Jenkins rose for another three-pointer, it looked as though the momentum belonged fully to Efes at 59-67. But that's when Le Mans reacted with a 6-0 run capped by Yannick Bokolo's triple that made it 65-67. The game was coming to a close and nerves got hold of both teams. After a few misses, Gonlum scored entering minute 39 to let Efes breathe at 65-69. A turnover by Prkacin allowed Gregory to keep Le Mans close at 67-69 entering the last minute. When Bogavac fouled Profit, he dropped both free throws for Efes, meaning that a last-ditch three-pointer by Bogavac would not have hurt even if it fell, which it did not.

Head Coaches

COLLET, VINCENT
Le Mans
"It was a great disappointment for us, but Efes played a great game. We suffered under the basket when they posted up with Kuqo and also they made great shots from Jenkins and Nicholas."
MAHMUTI, OKTAY
Efes Pilsen
"I want to thank the supporters who came, it was very important for us. It was a physical game, we had a problem with rebonds but we played good in offense. We controlled the game, especially in the second quarter. Every point was very important. Le Mans is a very athletic team. They played very aggressive. This game was more important because we lost at home against Le Mans, so no we're even."
JENKINS, HORACE
Efes Pilsen
"It was an important game for us. It was like a revenge to win this game. We played with patience. We are in the good way to be qualified for the next round."
