THE TAKE

Real Madrid will look to bounce back from a three-game Group C slide when it hosts Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday in Spain. Madrid (5-4) needs to put an end to its losing streak and, even though it lost at home to lower-ranked Pau-Orthez last week, will have every opportunity to do so against Partizan (2-7). When Madrid and Partizan last met, Luis Bullock led five players in double figures with a game-high 20 points as Madrid won 75-63 on the road in Belgrade. Center Kosta Perovic led Partizan with 13 points. Despite winning its second game of the season last week, at home against Montepaschi, Partizan is facing a severe shortage of perimeter players. After last week's win, Partizan released its second-best scorer, veteran shooter Nikola Loncar (10.5 ppg.) without much of an explanation. Shortly before that, point guard Gerald Brown was cut, but his announced replacement, Vonteego Cummings, has yet to be confirmed. With backup playmaker Boris Bakic on the injured list, Partizan is short on guards, to put it lightly. Rising star teenager Uros Tripkovic (7.5 ppg.), who had a season-high 18 last week against Montepaschi, will be a player to watch for the visitors. Of course, so will forward Dejan Milojevic (15.8 ppg., 10.1 rpg.) who has powered Partizan through many tough situations int he past. Milojevic had arguably his worst game of the season against Madrid in Belgrade, shooting 3 for 15 to finish with 11 points and 5 rebounds. He was held in check by Axel Hervelle (9.2 ppg.) with help from Felipe Reyes (9.6 ppg., 7.8 rpg.) and Venson Hamilton (4.3 ppg., 1.6 bpg.). Small forward Mickael Gelebale (9.2 ppg.) could also be in the defensive rotation against Milojevic, if a change is needed. Now that Belgrade centers Perovic (8.7 ppg.) and Nikola Pekovic (7.5 ppg., 4 rpg. in 16 min.) have become threats inside, Milojevic has more freedom than ever with his face to the basket. Madrid's advantage would come in the backcourt even if Partizan was at full strength. Few backcourts anywhere are capable of stopping starters Bullock (16.1 ppg., 2.1 spg.), fifth in the league in scoring, and Igor Rakocevic (14.1 ppg.), who is even higher-ranked on a per-minute basis. Madrid has kept its opponents in check by holding them to only 68.2 points per game - second fewest among Euroleague teams - but has only scored 70 itself. Partizan is the worst scoring team in the league at 66.1 points on average. The statistics and Partizan's lack of players give Madrid a real advantage - especially at home - to end its losing streak and solidify its Group C standing.

After almost three quarters of playing with fire, Real Madrid burst out for a mega-run that led to a deceptively easy-looking 85-68 victory over visiting Partizan in Group C on Wednesday. Madrid had trailed most of the game before a 24-1 blast started late in the third quarter changed everything. Madrid's record improved to 6-4 and it now shares third place with CSKA Moscow, a loser on the road to Unicaja on Wednesday. Partizan fell to 2-8 and fewer chances of surviving to make the Top 16. Igor Rakocevic came off the bench to lead Madrid with 23 points, most of those after halftime. Axel Hervelle added 15 points for the winners, Louis Bullock 12, Felipe Reyes and Mickael Gelabale 10 each. Partizan got 14 points from Uros Tripkovic, 13 from Kosta Perovic and 10 plus 11 rebounds from Dejan Milojevic. Partizan lived on three-pointers to stake first half leads as high as 12 points, but with its rally at the end, Madrid eventually evened the guests from downtown with 10 triples each.

Predgrag Suput got the guests going on the right foot with a triple in the opening minute, but soon Venson Hamilton was dunking to tie for Madrid, 3-3. Partizan worked inside to Perovic for a pair of baskets before Milojevic set up outside for his own three-point shot. By the time Perovic dunked for his third basket, Partizan had not only a 7-14 lead in 6 minutes but a whole lot of confidence. That momentum continued with two new players burying triples, Tripkovic and Petar Bozic, as the lead grew to 10-20. Perovic finished with a layup inside to give himself 8 points and Partizan a 12-22 advantage after 10 minutes.

After Luka Bogdanovic dunked to oen the second quarter, Madrid's response began with a shot from downtown by Axel Hervelle and a basket inside by Gelabale. By the time Rakocevic scored his first jumper, Madrid was within 21-25, but Tripkovic and Suput responded with a double shot from the arc to restore a double-digit lead of 21-31 midway through the quarter. A couple of scoreless minutes ended with Eduardo Hernandez-Sonseca, Gelabale and Rakocevic combining for 6 points that got the hosts back within 27-33. Milojevic erased half of that gain with a basket-plus-free throw but Hervelle struck again from the arc to match him. When Gelabale tossed in his own triple, it was 35-38, but Nicola Pekovic made free throws to keep Partizan in charge, 35-40, at the break.

Felipe Reyes got involved with 4 quick points in the third quarter that drew Madrid within a point before Hervelle tied 40-40 from the foul line. Bozic shot Partizan back ahead from downtown, but Rakocevic matched him, and soon Hervelle was making a layup and a triple to boost the hosts to a 48-43 advantage. Bogdanovic and Tripkovic answered strongly, with back-to-back bombs as Partizan's defense blanked Madrid during almost 4 minutes. With 4 points from Perovic and Pekovic in that span, Partizan was back up, 48-53. Bullock led an end-of-quarter charge with points of all kinds - a triple, a layup and free throws - but Rakocevic took the honors of putting Madrid in front, 60-58, after 30 minutes on a three-point basket-plus-free throw.

When Rakocevic then opened the final quarter with 3 more points from downtown, the momentum swung completely to Madrid. He was fouled on his next long-distance shot, made 3 free throws, then watched Bullock land a bomb from the arc. When Rakocevic's layup fell next, Madrid had an 18-0 run since late in the previous quarter and the scoreboard in control at 71-58. After a Partizan's first point of the quarter, a foul shot, Rakocevic continued with another three-pointer to which Hervelle added 3 points the hard way in the paint. That made it a 24-1 run and abundantly clear that Partizan's good showing for three quarters was not enough to stop the hosts on their own floor.

Head Coaches

MALJKOVIC, BOZIDAR
Real Madrid
"We had a slow start, just like it happened in some other games this season, especially in defense, allowing too many easy shots, without intensity. Partizan may be an unexperienced team but it is also very talented, and if you help them, they can surely beat you any night. Partizan has a lot of players with a brilliant future in front of them, but they paid for their unexperience and we improved in the third and especially in the fourth quarter. We played with another speed and we finished the game at the maximum level. Our calendar turns more difficult now, but our goal is to make it to the next round as soon as possible."
VUJOSEVIC, DUSKO
Partizan
"We played well for 28 minutes but a basketball game is 40 minutes long. We have shown we are a talented team, able to give Real Madrid some trouble in its own court, as they had to make an effort to win. We cannot play for three quarters and then disappear. We did a good job in the beginning, especially in offense and I am happy for that, but we cannot do what we did in the final period, because against a team like Real Madrid that means losing the game. This is group of talented, young players who help the team to be successful."

Players

GELABALE, MICKAEL
Real Madrid
"This win gets us closer to reach the Euroleague Top 16 and it was crucial for us to win tonight, especially since we lost against Pau-Orthez at home last week. We hope to make it to the next round as soon as possible and we are already thinking about our next Euroleague game in Istanbul against Ulker, in a very difficult court. If we want to win in there we have to be focused all game long. We had a slow start tonight and we managed to rally, but this may not happen all the time. We have to be focused and play all together."
TRIPKOVIC, UROS
Partizan
"We played well for three quarters and we have to be happy with our strong start in this game, but everything changed in the fourth quarter, in which all our previous work was in vain. YOu have to take into account that we have a lot of players in the beginning of our basketbal careers. We have to improve in all aspects of the game, especially in defense, as well as getting experience by playing all together."
